Long-time dynamics for time-nonlocal generalized Rayleigh-Stokes equations

In this paper, we consider an autonomous semi-dynamical system driven by semilinear time-nonlocal evolution equations, these type equations are used to describe the Rayleigh-Stokes problem for a non-Newtonain fluid to a generalized second grade fluid. We first investigate the global well-posedness of solutions consisting of global Lipschitz condition by a weighted space $\mathcal C$. Utilizing the topology convergence on compact subsets of $\mathcal C$, we construct a semi-dynamical system that satisfies the semi-group structure. It also is shown that this semi-dynamical system has an attracting set when the vector field function satisfies a dissipativity condition and a local Lipschitz condition. With the asymptotic compactness, we also establish the existence of generalized attractors in $\mathcal C_\alpha$ of subspace of $\mathcal C$ the weighted norm.

The Relic Condition: When Published Scholarship Becomes Material for Its Own Replacement

We extracted the scholarly reasoning systems of two internationally prominent humanities and social science scholars from their published corpora alone, converted those systems into structured inference-time constraints for a large language model, and tested whether the resulting scholar-bots could perform core academic functions at expert-assessed quality. The distillation pipeline used an eight-layer extraction method and a nine-module skill architecture grounded in local, closed-corpus analysis. The scholar-bots were then deployed across doctoral supervision, peer review, lecturing and panel-style academic exchange. Expert assessment involved three senior academics producing reports and appointment-level syntheses. Across the preserved expert record, all review and supervision reports judged the outputs benchmark-attaining, appointment-level recommendations placed both bots at or above Senior Lecturer level in the Australian university system, and recovered panel scores placed Scholar A between 7.9 and 8.9/10 and Scholar B between 8.5 and 8.9/10 under multi-turn debate conditions. A research-degree-student survey showed high performance ratings across information reliability, theoretical depth and logical rigor, with pronounced ceiling effects on a 7-point scale, despite all participants already being frontier-model users. We term this the Relic condition: when publication systems make stable reasoning architectures legible, extractable and cheaply deployable, the public record of intellectual labor becomes raw material for its own functional replacement. Because the technical threshold for this transition is already crossed at modest engineering effort, we argue that the window for protective frameworks covering disclosure, consent, compensation and deployment restriction is the present, while deployment remains optional rather than infrastructural.

A Tractable Unified Skew-t Distribution and Its Copula for Heterogeneous Asymmetries

Multivariate distributions that allow for asymmetry and heavy tails are important building blocks in many econometric and statistical models. The Unified Skew-t (UST) is a promising choice because it is both scalable and allows for a high level of flexibility in the asymmetry in the distribution. However, it suffers from parameter identification and computational hurdles that have to date inhibited its use for modeling data. In this paper we propose a new tractable variant of the unified skew-t (TrUST) distribution that addresses both challenges. Moreover, the copula of this distribution is shown to also be tractable, while allowing for greater heterogeneity in asymmetric dependence over variable pairs than the popular skew-t copula. We show how Bayesian posterior inference for both the distribution and its copula can be computed using an extended likelihood derived from a generative representation of the distribution. The efficacy of this Bayesian method, and the enhanced flexibility of both the TrUST distribution and its implicit copula, is first demonstrated using simulated data. Applications of the TrUST distribution to highly skewed regional Australian electricity prices, and the TrUST copula to intraday U.S. equity returns, demonstrate how our proposed distribution and its copula can provide substantial increases in accuracy over the popular skew-t and its copula in practice.

Impact of on-site potentials on $q$-breathers in nonlinear chains

On-site potentials are ubiquitous in physical systems and strongly influence their heat transport and energy localization. These potentials will inevitably affect the dynamical properties of $q$-breathers (QBs), defined as periodic orbits exponentially localized in normal mode space. By integrating on-site terms into the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou-$\beta$ system, this work utilizes numerical simulations and Floquet analysis to systematically explore the influence of on-site potentials on QB stability. For most QBs, except those at the phonon band edges, the instability is primarily governed by parametric resonance, and effectively described by coupled Mathieu equations. This approach provides a theoretical expression for the instability thresholds, which aligns well with numerical results. We demonstrate that the instability thresholds can be controlled through the strength of on-site potentials, and for a strong enough quadratic on-site potential, the QBs are always stable. Furthermore, the instability threshold is highly sensitive to the seed mode, in stark contrast to systems without on-site potentials. In addition, the instability phase diagrams exhibit joint interplay between different terms in the Hamiltonian, such as the quadratic on-site and quartic inter-site interaction terms, in regulating the QB dynamics. These findings offer valuable insights into QB stability and the manipulation of localized excitations in diverse physical systems with on-site potentials.

Querying structural and functional niches on spatial transcriptomics data

Cells in multicellular organisms coordinate to form structural and functional niches. With spatial transcriptomics (ST) enabling gene expression profiling in spatial contexts, it has been revealed that spatial niches serve as cohesive and recurrent units in physiological and pathological processes. These observations suggest universal tissue organization principles encoded by conserved niche patterns, and call for a query-based niche analytical paradigm beyond current computational tools. In this work, we defined the niche-query task, which is to identify similar niches across ST samples given a niche of interest (NOI). We further developed QueST, a specialized method for solving this task. QueST models each niche as a subgraph, uses contrastive learning to learn discriminative niche embeddings, and incorporates adversarial training to mitigate batch effects. In simulations and benchmark datasets, QueST outperformed existing methods repurposed for niche querying, accurately capturing niche structures in heterogeneous environments and demonstrating strong generalizability across diverse sequencing platforms. Applied to tertiary lymphoid structures in renal and lung cancers, QueST revealed functionally distinct niches associated with patient prognosis and uncovered conserved and divergent spatial architectures across cancer types. Applied to a combinatorial spatial perturbation dataset, QueST demonstrated a complete de novo discovery-oriented workflow, characterizing previously unresolved tumor nodules through querying. These results demonstrate that QueST enables systematic, quantitative profiling of spatial niches across samples, providing a powerful tool to dissect spatial tissue architecture in health and disease.

$q$-Breathers in the diatomic $\beta$-Fermi-Pasta-Ulam- Tsingou chains

$q$-Breathers (QBs) represent a quintessential phenomenon of energy localization, manifesting as stable periodic orbits exponentially localized in normal mode space. Their existence can hinder the thermalization process in nonlinear lattices. In this study, we employ the Newton's method to identify QB solutions in the diatomic Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou chains and perform a comprehensive analysis of their linear stability. We derive an analytical expression for the instability thresholds of low-frequency QBs, which converges to the known results of monoatomic chains as the bandgap approaches zero. The expression reveals an inverse square relationship between instability thresholds and system size, as well as a quadratic dependence on the mass difference, both of which have been corroborated through extensive numerical simulations. Our results demonstrate that the presence of a bandgap can markedly enhance QB stability, providing a novel theoretical foundation and practical framework for controlling energy transport between modes in complex lattice systems. These results not only expand the applicability of QBs but also offer significant implications for understanding the thermalization dynamics in complex lattice structures, with wide potential applications in related low-dimensional materials.

Improving Typhoon Predictions by Integrating Data-Driven Machine Learning Models with Physics Models Based on the Spectral Nudging and Data Assimilation

With the rapid development of data-driven machine learning (ML) models in meteorology, typhoon track forecasts have become increasingly accurate. However, current ML models still face challenges, such as underestimating typhoon intensity and lacking interpretability. To address these issues, this study establishes an ML-driven hybrid typhoon model, where forecast fields from the Pangu-Weather model are used to constrain the large-scale forecasts of the Weather Research and Forecasting model based on the spectral nudging method (Pangu_SP). The results show that forecasts from the Pangu_SP experiment obviously outperform those by using the Global Forecast System as the initial field (GFS_INIT) and from the Integrated Forecasting System of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF IFS) for the track forecast of Typhoon Doksuri (2023). The predicted typhoon cloud patterns from Pangu_SP are also more consistent with satellite observations. Additionally, the typhoon intensity forecasts from Pangu_SP are notably more accurate than those from the ECMWF IFS, demonstrating that the hybrid model effectively leverages the strengths of both ML and physical models. Furthermore, this study is the first to explore the significance of data assimilation in ML-driven hybrid dynamical systems. The findings reveal that after assimilating water vapor channels from the Advanced Geostationary Radiation Imager onboard Fengyun-4B, the errors in typhoon intensity forecasts are reduced.

Magnetism measurements of two-dimensional van der Waals antiferromagnet CrPS4 using dynamic cantilever magnetometry

Recent experimental and theoretical work has focused on two-dimensional van der Waals (2D vdW) magnets due to their potential applications in sensing and spintronics devises. In measurements of these emerging materials, conventional magnetometry often encounters challenges in characterizing the magnetic properties of small-sized vdW materials, especially for antiferromagnets with nearly compensated magnetic moments. Here, we investigate the magnetism of 2D antiferromagnet CrPS4 with a thickness of 8nm by using dynamic cantilever magnetometry (DCM). Through a combination of DCM experiment and the calculation based on a Stoner--Wohlfarth-type model, we unravel the magnetization states in 2D CrPS4 antiferromagnet. In the case of H parallel with c, a two-stage phase transition is observed. For H perpendicular to c, a hump in the effective magnetic restoring force is noted, which implies the presence of spin reorientation as temperature increases. These results demonstrate the benefits of DCM for studying magnetism of 2D magnets.

Polarization-Encoded Lenticular Nano-Printing with Single-Layer Metasurfaces

Metasurface-based nano-printing has enabled ultrahigh-resolution grayscale or color image display. However, the maximum number of independent nano-printing images allowed by one single-layer metasurface is still limited despite many multiplexing methods that have been proposed to increase the design degree of freedom. In this work, we substantially push the multiplexing limit of nano-printing by transforming images at different observation angles into mapping the corresponding images to different positions in the Fourier space, and simultaneously controlling the complex electric field across multiple polarization channels. Our proposed Polarization-Encoded Lenticular Nano-Printing (Pollen), aided by a modified evolutionary algorithm, allows the display of several images based on the viewing angle, similar to traditional lenticular printing but without requiring a lenticular layer. In addition, it extends the display capability to encompass multiple polarization states. Empowered by the ability to control the complex amplitude of three polarization channels, we numerically and experimentally demonstrate the generation of 13 distinguished gray-scale Chinese ink wash painting images, 49 binary patterns, and three sets of 3D nano-printing images, totaling 25 unique visuals. These results present the largest number of recorded images with ultra-high resolution to date. Our innovative Pollen technique is expected to benefit the development of modern optical applications, including but not limited to optical encryption, optical data storage, lightweight display, and augmented reality and virtual reality.

Large Skew-t Copula Models and Asymmetric Dependence in Intraday Equity Returns

Skew-t copula models are attractive for the modeling of financial data because they allow for asymmetric and extreme tail dependence. We show that the copula implicit in the skew-t distribution of Azzalini and Capitanio (2003) allows for a higher level of pairwise asymmetric dependence than two popular alternative skew-t copulas. Estimation of this copula in high dimensions is challenging, and we propose a fast and accurate Bayesian variational inference (VI) approach to do so. The method uses a generative representation of the skew-t distribution to define an augmented posterior that can be approximated accurately. A stochastic gradient ascent algorithm is used to solve the variational optimization. The methodology is used to estimate skew-t factor copula models with up to 15 factors for intraday returns from 2017 to 2021 on 93 U.S. equities. The copula captures substantial heterogeneity in asymmetric dependence over equity pairs, in addition to the variability in pairwise correlations. In a moving window study we show that the asymmetric dependencies also vary over time, and that intraday predictive densities from the skew-t copula are more accurate than those from benchmark copula models. Portfolio selection strategies based on the estimated pairwise asymmetric dependencies improve performance relative to the index.

Decoupled phase modulation for circularly polarized lights via chiral metasurface

Metasurfaces are believed as one of the best candidates in nano-optical devices, attributed to the key feasible modulation features of phase, polarization, and local field enhancement by structural designing. However, current methods of propagation- and geometric-phase modulation are interrelated between two eigen spin-states. This means that when the left-handed component phase of a beam is modulated by metasurfaces, its right-handed component phase will change accordingly, which limits the versatility of spin-decoupled applications. In this paper, we experimentally and numerically demonstrate a new phase modulation pathway based on chiral V-shaped holes, which enable fully decoupled one-handed phase modulation of the two eigen spin-states. Two enantiomers are proposed to realize decoupled functions for the two eign-states, e.g., the enantiomer can manipulate the left-handed component phase of a laser beam without changes of the right-handed component. This proposed method has significant meaning in metasurfaces, which can expand the methods of phase engineering.

Soliton resolution for the Harry Dym equation with weighted Sobolev initial data

The soliton resolution for the Harry Dym equation is established for initial conditions in weighted Sobolev space $H^{1,1}(\mathbb{R})$. Combining the nonlinear steepest descent method and $\bar{\partial}$-derivatives condition, we obtain that when $\frac{y}{t}<-\epsilon(\epsilon>0)$ the long time asymptotic expansion of the solution $q(x,t)$ in any fixed cone \begin{equation} C\left(y_{1}, y_{2}, v_{1}, v_{2}\right)=\left\{(y, t) \in R^{2} \mid y=y_{0}+v t, y_{0} \in\left[y_{1}, y_{2}\right], v \in\left[v_{1}, v_{2}\right]\right\} \end{equation} up to an residual error of order $\mathcal{O}(t^{-1})$. The expansion shows the long time asymptotic behavior can be described as an $N(I)$-soliton on discrete spectrum whose parameters are modulated by a sum of localized soliton-soliton interactions as one moves through the cone and the second term coming from soliton-radiation interactionson on continuous spectrum.

Efficient Interfacial Solar Steam Generator with Controlled Macromorphology Derived from Flour via "Dough Figurine" Technology

Solar-driven interface steam generator (SISG) is a most promising technology for seawater desalination and wastewater purification. A shape- and size-controlled, low-cost, eco-friendly solar-absorber material is urgently desired for practical application of SISG. Herein, we proposed a facile, sustainable and scalable approach to produce tailored SISG with controlled macromorphology derived from flour via "dough figurine" technology which is originated from the China Han Dynasty. Three kinds of self-floated flour-based absorbers i.e. near-cylindrical (integrated), near-spherical (loose packing) and powdery (dense packing) absorber used as SISGs were discussed, we found that the macromorphology significantly influences water transport and interfacial thermal management of SISG, the integrated absorber has an overwhelming advantage, which possesses a high evaporation efficiency 71.9% at normal solar illumination. The proposed "dough figurine" technology breaks the limitations of the inherent geometry of reported biomass based SISG, which provides an important guidance for SISG use in remote and impoverished areas.
