Integrated diffractive full-Stokes spectro-polarimetric imaging

Spectro-polarimetric imaging provides multidimensional optical information acquisition capabilities, offering significant potential for diverse applications. Current spectro-polarimetric imaging systems typically suffer from large physical footprints, high design complexity, elevated costs, or the drawback of requiring replacement of standard components with polarization optics. To address these issues, we propose an integrated diffractive full-Stokes spectro-polarimetric imaging framework that synergistically combines end-to-end designed diffractive polarization spectral element (DPSE) with SPMSA-Net to demonstrate high-performance spectro-polarimetric imaging. The DPSE modulates scene and generates modulated images carrying phase-encoding and polarization information. The modulated images are the input of the SPMSA-NET for the reconstruction of the spectro-polarimetric data cube. The framework achieves an average improvement of 0.78 dB in PSNR and 0.012 in SSIM over existing state-of-the-art algorithms. Based on this framework, our prototype system can simultaneously capture spectral information (400-700 nm) with 10 nm spectral resolution and full-Stokes parameters (S0,S1,S2,S3). Meanwhile, the system provides high spatial resolution of 2252*2252 pixels. Experimental results demonstrate that our system achieves high-fidelity spectral imaging (over 98.9% fidelity) and precise polarization characterization, with a compact architecture (modulation component of merely 2-mm thickness).

Broadband Near-Infrared Compressive Spectral Imaging System with Reflective Structure

Near-infrared (NIR) hyperspectral imaging has become a critical tool in modern analytical science. However, conventional NIR hyperspectral imaging systems face challenges including high cost, bulky instrumentation, and inefficient data collection. In this work, we demonstrate a broadband NIR compressive spectral imaging system that is capable of capturing hyperspectral data covering a broad spectral bandwidth ranging from 700 to 1600 nm. By segmenting wavelengths and designing specialized optical components, our design overcomes hardware spectral limitations to capture broadband data, while the reflective optical structure makes the system compact. This approach provides a novel technical solution for NIR hyperspectral imaging.

Spatial-enhanced Reflective Coded Aperture Snapshot Spectral Imaging

Coded aperture snapshot hyperspectral imaging (CASSI) system which captures 2-D spatial information and 1-D spectral information in just one or two shots has become a promising technology to capture hyperspectral image (HSI). However, previous CASSI have shortcomings such as poor spatial resolution and low light efficiency that hinder their further applications. In this paper, we propose a spatial-enhanced reflective coded aperture snapshot spectral imaging system (SE-RCASSI). The system achieves superior spatial results and high light efficiency because of its specially designed structure. Then, we propose Spatial-enhanced Network (SEnet) which takes full use of the prior information of grayscale image to boost the reconstruction quality and can serve as an image fusion framework to deploy different algorithms. Furthermore, we propose hybrid prior strategy (HPS) to effectively exploit the broad-scope prior of training set and narrow-scope prior of measurements, resulting in improved generalization and performance of the network. Finally, we fabricate the prototype of SE-RCASSI and conduct experiments in different environments. Both experimental results and numerical simulations show the outstanding performance of our method.

Integration of Communication and Computational Imaging

Communication enables the expansion of human visual perception beyond the limitations of time and distance, while computational imaging overcomes the constraints of depth and breadth. Although impressive achievements have been witnessed with the two types of technologies, the occlusive information flow between the two domains is a bottleneck hindering their ulterior progression. Herein, we propose a novel framework that integrates communication and computational imaging (ICCI) to break through the inherent isolation between communication and computational imaging for remote perception. By jointly considering the sensing and transmitting of remote visual information, the ICCI framework performs a full-link information transfer optimization, aiming to minimize information loss from the generation of the information source to the execution of the final vision tasks. We conduct numerical analysis and experiments to demonstrate the ICCI framework by integrating communication systems and snapshot compressive imaging systems. Compared with straightforward combination schemes, which sequentially execute sensing and transmitting, the ICCI scheme shows greater robustness against channel noise and impairments while achieving higher data compression. Moreover, an 80 km 27-band hyperspectral video perception with a rate of 30 fps is experimentally achieved. This new ICCI remote perception paradigm offers a highefficiency solution for various real-time computer vision tasks.

Theoretical and experimental study of attenuation in cancellous bone

Photoacoustic (PA) technology can provide information on both the physical structure and chemical composition of bone, showing great potential in bone assessment. However, due to the complex composition and porous structure of cancellous bone, the PA signals generated and propagated in cancellous bone are complex and difficult to be directly used in cancellous bone analysis. In this paper, a photoacoustic differential attenuation spectrum (PA-DAS) method is proposed. By eliminating the PA spectrum of the optical absorption sources, the propagation attenuation characteristics of cancellous bone are studied theoretically and experimentally. An analytical solution for the propagation attenuation of broadband ultrasound waves in cancellous bone is given by applying high-frequency and viscous corrections to Biot's theory. An experimental system of PA-DAS with an eccentric excitation differential detection system is established to obtain the PA-DAS of cancellous bone and its acoustic propagation characteristic on the rabbit osteoporosis model. The PA-DAS quantization parameter slope is further extracted to quantify the attenuation of high and low frequency components. The results show that the PA-DAS can distinguish osteoporotic bone from normal bone, enabling quantitative assessment of bone mineral density and the diagnosis of osteoporosis.

Semantic optical fiber communication system

The current optical communication systems minimize bit or symbol errors without considering the semantic meaning behind digital bits, thus transmitting a lot of unnecessary information. We propose and experimentally demonstrate a semantic optical fiber communication (SOFC) system. Instead of encoding information into bits for transmission, semantic information is extracted from the source using deep learning. The generated semantic symbols are then directly transmitted through an optical fiber. Compared with the bit-based structure, the SOFC system achieved higher information compression and a more stable performance, especially in the low received optical power regime, and enhanced the robustness against optical link impairments. This work introduces an intelligent optical communication system at the human analytical thinking level, which is a significant step toward a breakthrough in the current optical communication architecture.

Unresolved excess accumulation of myelin-derived cholesterol contributes to scar formation after spinal cord injury

Background: Spinal cord injury triggers complex pathological cascades, resulting in destructive tissue damage and incomplete tissue repair. Scar formation is generally considered as a barrier for regeneration in central nervous system (CNS), while the intrinsic mechanism of scar-forming after spinal cord injury has not been completed deciphered. Methods: We assessed cholesterol hemostasis in spinal cord lesions and injured peripheral nerves using confocal reflection microscopy and real-time PCR analyses. The involvement of the proteins, which were predicted to promote cholesterol efflux in spinal cord lesions, were assessed with Liver X receptor (LXR) agonist and Apolipoprotein E (APOE) deficiency. The role of reverse cholesterol transport (RCT) in cholesterol clearance was examined in APOE KO mice injured sciatic nerves and myelin-overloaded macrophages in vitro. Finally, we determined the consequence of excess cholesterol accumulation in CNS by transplantation of myelin into neonatal spinal cord lesions. Results: We found that excess cholesterol accumulates in phagocytes and is inefficiently removed in spinal cord lesions in young-adult mice. Interestingly, we observed that excessive cholesterol also accumulates in injured peripheral nerves, but is subsequently removed by RCT. Meanwhile, preventing RCT led to macrophage accumulation and fibrosis in injured peripheral nerves. Furthermore, the neonatal mouse spinal cord lesions are devoid of myelin-derived lipids, and able to heal without excess cholesterol accumulation. We found that transplantation of myelin into neonatal lesions disrupts healing with excessive cholesterol accumulation, persistent macrophage activation and fibrosis, indicating myelin-derived cholesterol plays a critical role in impaired wound healing.

Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound promotes mesenchymal stem cell transplantation-based articular cartilage regeneration via inhibiting the TNF signaling pathway

Background: Mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) transplantation therapy is highly investigated for the regenerative repair of cartilage defects. Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) has the potential to promote chondrogenic differentiation of MSCs. However, its underlying mechanism remains unclear. Here, we investigated the promoting effects and mechanisms underlying LIPUS stimulation on the chondrogenic differentiation of human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (hUC-MSCs) and further evaluated its regenerative application value in articular cartilage defects in rats. Methods: LIPUS was applied to stimulate cultured hUC-MSCs and C28/I2 cells in vitro. Immunofluorescence staining, qPCR analysis, and transcriptome sequencing were used to detect mature cartilage-related markers of gene and protein expression for a comprehensive evaluation of differentiation. Injured articular cartilage rat models were established for further hUC-MSC transplantation and LIPUS stimulation in vivo. Histopathology and H&E staining were used to evaluate the repair effects of the injured articular cartilage with LIPUS stimulation. Results: The results showed that LIPUS stimulation with specific parameters effectively promoted the expression of mature cartilage-related genes and proteins, inhibited TNF-{\alpha} gene expression in hUC-MSCs, and exhibited anti-inflammation in C28/I2 cells. In addition, the articular cartilage defects of rats were significantly repaired after hUC-MSC transplantation and LIPUS stimulation. Conclusions: Taken together, LIPUS stimulation could realize articular cartilage regeneration based on hUC-MSC transplantation due to the inhibition of the TNF signaling pathway, which is of clinical value for the relief of osteoarthritis.
