Spark complexes on good effective orbifold atlases categorically

Good atlases are defined for effective orbifolds, and a spark complex is constructed on each good atlas. It is proved that this process is 2-functorial with compatible systems playing as morphisms between good atlases, and that the spark character 2-functor factors through this 2-functor.

Towards probabilistic partial metric spaces: Diagonals between distance distributions

The quantale of distance distributions is of fundamental importance for understanding probabilistic metric spaces as enriched categories. Motivated by the categorical interpretation of partial metric spaces, we are led to investigate the quantaloid of diagonals between distance distributions, which is expected to establish the categorical foundation of probabilistic partial metric spaces. Observing that the quantale of distance distributions w.r.t. an arbitrary continuous t-norm is non-divisible, we precisely characterize diagonals between distance distributions, and prove that one-step functions are the only distance distributions on which the set of diagonals coincides with the generated down set.

Fuzzy Galois connections on fuzzy sets

In fairly elementary terms this paper presents how the theory of preordered fuzzy sets, more precisely quantale-valued preorders on quantale-valued fuzzy sets, is established under the guidance of enriched category theory. Motivated by several key results from the theory of quantaloid-enriched categories, this paper develops all needed ingredients purely in order-theoretic languages for the readership of fuzzy set theorists, with particular attention paid to fuzzy Galois connections between preordered fuzzy sets.

Regularity vs. constructive complete (co)distributivity

It is well known that a relation $φ$ between sets is regular if, and only if, $\mathcal{K}φ$ is completely distributive (cd), where $\mathcal{K}φ$ is the complete lattice consisting of fixed points of the Kan adjunction induced by $φ$. For a small quantaloid $\mathcal{Q}$, we investigate the $\mathcal{Q}$-enriched version of this classical result, i.e., the regularity of $\mathcal{Q}$-distributors versus the constructive complete distributivity (ccd) of $\mathcal{Q}$-categories, and prove that "the dual of $\mathcal{K}φ$ is (ccd) $\implies$ $φ$ is regular $\implies$ $\mathcal{K}φ$ is (ccd)" for any $\mathcal{Q}$-distributor $φ$. Although the converse implications do not hold in general, in the case that $\mathcal{Q}$ is a commutative integral quantale, we show that these three statements are equivalent for any $φ$ if, and only if, $\mathcal{Q}$ is a Girard quantale.

Lax distributive laws for topology, II

For a small quantaloid $\mathcal{Q}$ we consider four fundamental 2-monads $\mathbb{T}$ on $\mathcal{Q}\text{-}{\bf Cat}$, given by the presheaf 2-monad $\mathbb{P}$ and the copresheaf 2-monad $\mathbb{P}^{\dagger}$, as well as by their two composite 2-monads, and establish that they all laxly distribute over $\mathbb{P}$. These four 2-monads therefore admit lax extensions to the category $\mathcal{Q}\text{-}{\bf Dist}$ of $\mathcal{Q}$-categories and their distributors. We characterize the corresponding $(\mathbb{T},\mathcal{Q})$-categories in each of the four cases, leading us to both known and novel categorical structures.

Fixed points of adjoint functors enriched in a quantaloid

Representation theorems are established for fixed points of adjoint functors between categories enriched in a small quantaloid. In a very general setting these results set up a common framework for representation theorems of concept lattices in formal concept analysis (FCA) and rough set theory (RST), which not only extend the realm of formal contexts to multi-typed and multi-valued ones, but also provide a general approach to construct various kinds of representation theorems. Besides incorporating several well-known representation theorems in FCA and RST as well as formulating new ones, it is shown that concept lattices in RST can always be represented as those in FCA through relative pseudo-complements of the given contexts, especially if the contexts are valued in a non-Girard quantaloid.

$\mathcal{Q}$-closure spaces

For a small quantaloid $\mathcal{Q}$, a $\mathcal{Q}$-closure space is a small category enriched in $\mathcal{Q}$ equipped with a closure operator on its presheaf category. We investigate $\mathcal{Q}$-closure spaces systematically with specific attention paid to their morphisms and, as preordered fuzzy sets are a special kind of quantaloid-enriched categories, in particular fuzzy closure spaces on fuzzy sets are introduced as an example. By constructing continuous relations that naturally generalize continuous maps, it is shown (in the generality of the $\mathcal{Q}$-version) that the category of closure spaces and closed continuous relations is equivalent to the category of complete lattices and $\sup$-preserving maps.

Chu connections and back diagonals between $\mathcal{Q}$-distributors

Chu connections and back diagonals are introduced as morphisms for distributors between categories enriched in a small quantaloid $\mathcal{Q}$. These notions, meaningful for closed bicategories, dualize the constructions of arrow categories and the Freyd completion of categories. It is shown that, for a small quantaloid $\mathcal{Q}$, the category of complete $\mathcal{Q}$-categories and left adjoints is a retract of the dual of the category of $\mathcal{Q}$-distributors and Chu connections, and it is dually equivalent to the category of $\mathcal{Q}$-distributors and back diagonals. As an application of Chu connections, a postulation of the intuitive idea of reduction of formal contexts in the theory of formal concept analysis is presented, and a characterization of reducts of formal contexts is obtained.

Topological categories, quantaloids and Isbell adjunctions

In fairly elementary terms this paper presents, and expands upon, a recent result by Garner by which the notion of topologicity of a concrete functor is subsumed under the concept of total cocompleteness of enriched category theory. Motivated by some key results of the 1970s, the paper develops all needed ingredients from the theory of quantaloids in order to place essential results of categorical topology into the context of quantaloid-enriched category theory, a field that previously drew its motivation and applications from other domains, such as quantum logic and sheaf theory.

Adjunctions in Quantaloid-enriched Categories

This dissertation is devoted to a study of adjunctions concerning categories enriched over a quantaloid Q (or Q-categories for short), with the following types of adjunctions involved: (1) adjoint functors between Q-categories; (2) adjoint distributors between Q-categories; (3) adjoint functors between categories consisting of Q-categories. For a small quantaloid Q and a distributor between Q-categories, two adjunctions between the Q-categories of contravariant and covariant presheaves are presented. These adjunctions respectively extend the fundamental construction of Isbell adjunctions and Kan extensions in category theory, so, they will be called the Isbell adjunction and Kan adjunction, respectively. The functoriality of these constructions is the central topic of this dissertation. In order to achieve this, infomorphisms between distributors are introduced to organize distributors (as objects) into a category. Then we proceed as follows: first, the Isbell adjunction and Kan adjunction associated with each distributor between Q-categories give rise to two monads, which are respectively (covariant) functorial and contravariant functorial from the category of distributors and infomorphisms to the category of Q-closure spaces; second, it is shown that the assignments of a distributor to the fixed points of the two monads are respectively (covariant) functorial and contravariant functorial from the category of distributors and infomorphisms to that of skeletal complete Q-categories and left adjoint functors. As consequences of the functoriality of the above processes, three factorizations of the free cocompletion functor of Q-categories are presented. Finally, as applications, the theory of formal concept analysis and that of rough sets are extended to theories based on fuzzy relations between fuzzy sets.

Categories enriched over a quantaloid: Isbell adjunctions and Kan adjunctions

Each distributor between categories enriched over a small quantaloid Q gives rise to two adjunctions between the categories of contravariant and covariant presheaves, and hence to two monads. These two adjunctions are respectively generalizations of Isbell adjunctions and Kan extensions in category theory. It is proved that these two processes are functorial with infomorphisms playing as morphisms between distributors; and that the free cocompletion functor of Q-categories factors through both of these functors.
