Magnetic-field-induced robust zero Hall plateau state in MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ Chern insulator

The intrinsic antiferromagnetic topological insulator MnBi2Te4 provides an ideal platform for exploring exotic topological quantum phenomena. Recently, the Chern insulator and axion insulator phases have been realized in few-layer MnBi2Te4 devices at low magnetic field regime. However, the fate of MnBi2Te4 in high magnetic field has never been explored in experiment. In this work, we report transport studies of exfoliated MnBi2Te4 flakes in pulsed magnetic fields up to 61.5 T. In the high-field limit, the Chern insulator phase with Chern number C = -1 evolves into a robust zero Hall resistance plateau state. Nonlocal transport measurements and theoretical calculations demonstrate that the charge transport in the zero Hall plateau state is conducted by two counter-propagating edge states that arise from the combined effects of Landau levels and large Zeeman effect in strong magnetic fields. Our result demonstrates the intricate interplay among intrinsic magnetic order, external magnetic field, and nontrivial band topology in MnBi2Te4.

TreeBERT: A Tree-Based Pre-Trained Model for Programming Language

Source code can be parsed into the abstract syntax tree (AST) based on defined syntax rules. However, in pre-training, little work has considered the incorporation of tree structure into the learning process. In this paper, we present TreeBERT, a tree-based pre-trained model for improving programming language-oriented generation tasks. To utilize tree structure, TreeBERT represents the AST corresponding to the code as a set of composition paths and introduces node position embedding. The model is trained by tree masked language modeling (TMLM) and node order prediction (NOP) with a hybrid objective. TMLM uses a novel masking strategy designed according to the tree's characteristics to help the model understand the AST and infer the missing semantics of the AST. With NOP, TreeBERT extracts the syntactical structure by learning the order constraints of nodes in AST. We pre-trained TreeBERT on datasets covering multiple programming languages. On code summarization and code documentation tasks, TreeBERT outperforms other pre-trained models and state-of-the-art models designed for these tasks. Furthermore, TreeBERT performs well when transferred to the pre-trained unseen programming language.

Energy distribution of solutions to defocusing semi-linear wave equation in higher dimensional space

The topic of this paper is a semi-linear, defocusing wave equation $u_{t t}-Δu=-|u|^{p-1} u$ in sub-conformal case in the higher dimensional space whose initial data are radical and come with a finite energy. We prove some decay estimates of the the solutions if initial data decay at a certain rate as the spatial variable tends to infinity. A combination of this property with a method of characteristic lines give a scattering result if the initial data satisfy $$E_κ\left(u_{0}, u_{1}\right)=\int_{\mathbb{R}^{d}}\left(|x|^κ+1\right)\left(\frac{1}{2}\left|\nabla u_{0}(x)\right|^{2}+\frac{1}{2}\left|u_{1}(x)\right|^{2}+\frac{1}{p+1}\left|u_{0}(x)\right|^{p+1}\right) d x<+\infty.$$ Here $κ=\frac{(2-d)p+(d+2)}{p+1}$.

Rethinking Graph Neural Architecture Search from Message-passing

Graph neural networks (GNNs) emerged recently as a standard toolkit for learning from data on graphs. Current GNN designing works depend on immense human expertise to explore different message-passing mechanisms, and require manual enumeration to determine the proper message-passing depth. Inspired by the strong searching capability of neural architecture search (NAS) in CNN, this paper proposes Graph Neural Architecture Search (GNAS) with novel-designed search space. The GNAS can automatically learn better architecture with the optimal depth of message passing on the graph. Specifically, we design Graph Neural Architecture Paradigm (GAP) with tree-topology computation procedure and two types of fine-grained atomic operations (feature filtering and neighbor aggregation) from message-passing mechanism to construct powerful graph network search space. Feature filtering performs adaptive feature selection, and neighbor aggregation captures structural information and calculates neighbors' statistics. Experiments show that our GNAS can search for better GNNs with multiple message-passing mechanisms and optimal message-passing depth. The searched network achieves remarkable improvement over state-of-the-art manual designed and search-based GNNs on five large-scale datasets at three classical graph tasks. Codes can be found at https://github.com/phython96/GNAS-MP.

Highly Efficient Ultrathin Light Emitting Diodes based on Perovskite Nanocrystals

Light-emitting diodes based on perovskite nanocrystals (PNCs-LEDs) have gained great interest for next-generation display and lighting technologies prized for their color purity, high brightness and luminous efficiency approaching the intrinsic limit imposed by extraction of electroluminescence from the device structure. Although the time is ripe for the development of effective light outcoupling strategies to further boost the device performance, this technologically relevant aspect of PNC-LEDs is still without a definitive solution. Here, following theoretical guidelines and without the integration of complex photonic structures, we realize stable PNC-LEDs with EQE as high as 29.2% (average EQE=24.7%), which substantially break the outcoupling limit of common PNC-LEDs and systematically surpass any previous perovskite-based device. Key to such unprecedented performance is channeling the recombination zone in PNC emissive layers as thin as 10 nm, which we achieve by finely balancing the electron and hole transport using CsPbBr3 PNCs resurfaced with a nickel oxide layer. The ultra-thin approach general and, in principle, applicable to other perovskite nanostructures for fabricating highly efficient, color tunable transparent LEDs ideal for unobtrusive screens and displays and is compatible with the integration of photonic components for further enhanced performance.

Artificial Lateral Line Based Relative State Estimation for Two Adjacent Robotic Fish

The lateral line enables fish to efficiently sense the surrounding environment, thus assisting flow-related fish behaviours. Inspired by this phenomenon, varieties of artificial lateral line systems (ALLSs) have been developed and applied to underwater robots. This article focuses on using the pressure sensor arrays based on ALLS-measured hydrodynamic pressure variations (HPVs) for estimating the relative state between two adjacent robotic fish with leader-follower formation. The relative states include the relative oscillating frequency, amplitude, and offset of the upstream robotic fish to the downstream robotic fish, the relative vertical distance, the relative yaw angle, the relative pitch angle, and the relative roll angle between the two adjacent robotic fish. Regression model between the ALLS-measured and the mentioned relative states is investigated, and regression model-based relative state estimation is conducted. Specifically, two criteria are proposed firstly to investigate not only the sensitivity of each pressure sensor to the variations of relative state but also the insufficiency and redundancy of the pressure sensors. And thus the pressure sensors used for regression analysis are determined. Then four typical regression methods, including random forest algorithm, support vector regression, back propagation neural network, and multiple linear regression method are used for establishing regression models between the ALLS-measured HPVs and the relative states. Then regression effects of the four methods are compared and discussed. Finally, random forest-based method, which has the best regression effect, is used to estimate relative yaw angle and oscillating amplitude using the ALLS-measured HPVs and exhibits excellent estimation performance. This work contributes to local relative estimation for a group of underwater robots, which has always been a challenge.

Correlation Decay up to Uniqueness in Spin Systems

We give a complete characterization of the two-state anti-ferromagnetic spin systems which are of strong spatial mixing on general graphs. We show that a two-state anti-ferromagnetic spin system is of strong spatial mixing on all graphs of maximum degree at most $Δ$ if and only if the system has a unique Gibbs measure on infinite regular trees of degree up to $Δ$, where $Δ$ can be either bounded or unbounded. As a consequence, there exists an FPTAS for the partition function of a two-state anti-ferromagnetic spin system on graphs of maximum degree at most $Δ$ when the uniqueness condition is satisfied on infinite regular trees of degree up to $Δ$. In particular, an FPTAS exists for arbitrary graphs if the uniqueness is satisfied on all infinite regular trees. This covers as special cases all previous algorithmic results for two-state anti-ferromagnetic systems on general-structure graphs. Combining with the FPRAS for two-state ferromagnetic spin systems of Jerrum-Sinclair and Goldberg-Jerrum-Paterson, and the hardness results of Sly-Sun and independently of Galanis-Stefankovic-Vigoda, this gives a complete classification, except at the phase transition boundary, of the approximability of all two-state spin systems, on either degree-bounded families of graphs or family of all graphs.

Energy Distribution of solutions to defocusing semi-linear wave equation in two dimensional space

We consider finite-energy solutions to the defocusing nonlinear wave equation in two dimensional space. We prove that almost all energy moves to the infinity at almost the light speed as time tends to infinity. In addition, the inward/outward part of energy gradually vanishes as time tends to positive/negative infinity. These behaviours resemble those of free waves. We also prove some decay estimates of the solutions if the initial data decay at a certain rate as the spatial variable tends to infinity. As an application, we prove a couple of scattering results for solutions whose initial data are in a weighted energy space. Our assumption on decay rate of initial data is weaker than previous known scattering results.

Comparing Representations in Tracking for Event Camera-based SLAM

This paper investigates two typical image-type representations for event camera-based tracking: time surface (TS) and event map (EM). Based on the original TS-based tracker, we make use of these two representations' complementary strengths to develop an enhanced version. The proposed tracker consists of a general strategy to evaluate the optimization problem's degeneracy online and then switch proper representations. Both TS and EM are motion- and scene-dependent, and thus it is important to figure out their limitations in tracking. We develop six tracker variations and conduct a thorough comparison of them on sequences covering various scenarios and motion complexities. We release our implementations and detailed results to benefit the research community on event cameras: https: //github.com/gogojjh/ESVO_extension.

Multi-Messenger Astrophysics with THESEUS in the 2030s

Multi-messenger astrophysics is becoming a major avenue to explore the Universe, with the potential to span a vast range of redshifts. The growing synergies between different probes is opening new frontiers, which promise profound insights into several aspects of fundamental physics and cosmology. In this context, THESEUS will play a central role during the 2030s in detecting and localizing the electromagnetic counterparts of gravitational wave and neutrino sources that the unprecedented sensitivity of next generation detectors will discover at much higher rates than the present. Here, we review the most important target signals from multi-messenger sources that THESEUS will be able to detect and characterize, discussing detection rate expectations and scientific impact.

Learning Better Representation for Tables by Self-Supervised Tasks

Table-to-text generation aims at automatically generating natural text to help people to conveniently obtain the important information in tables. Although neural models for table-to-text have achieved remarkable progress, some problems still overlooked. The first is that the values recorded in many tables are mostly numbers in practice. The existing approaches do not do special treatment for these, and still regard these as words in natural language text. Secondly, the target texts in training dataset may contain redundant information or facts do not exist in the input tables. These may give wrong supervision signals to some methods based on content selection and planning and auxiliary supervision. To solve these problems, we propose two self-supervised tasks, Number Ordering and Significance Ordering, to help to learn better table representation. The former works on the column dimension to help to incorporate the size property of numbers into table representation. The latter acts on row dimension and help to learn a significance-aware table representation. We test our methods on the widely used dataset ROTOWIRE which consists of NBA game statistic and related news. The experimental results demonstrate that the model trained together with these two self-supervised tasks can generate text that contains more salient and well-organized facts, even without modeling context selection and planning. And we achieve the state-of-the-art performance on automatic metrics.

Spatially-resolved insulator-metal transition for rewritable optical gratings

Doping is an effective way to tune the property of metal oxides1-5, for achieving functional oxide electronics6-8. Previously we developed a controllable hydrogen doping technology at ambient conditions by use of electron-proton synergistic doping strategy, which enables one to get rid of high-temperature/pressure treatments required by traditional technologies9. Here, based on this facile doping route, we achieve a visual and reversible insulator-metal transition (MIT) for tungsten trioxide (WO3) film. Its outstanding spatial selection is comparable to standard UV lithography, which shows the potential of becoming a viable way for rewritable WO3 grating device fabrication. Furthermore, the period of the obtained WO3 structural grating can also be easily changed for requirement by doping area selection. This advanced doping technology opens up alternative approaches for developing not only optical devices, but also rewritable ions devices and integrated circuits for various oxide electronics.

Non-intrusive reduced order modeling of parametric electromagnetic scattering problems through Gaussian process regression

This paper is concerned with the design of a non-intrusive model order reduction (MOR) for the system of parametric time-domain Maxwell equations. A time- and parameter-independent reduced basis (RB) is constructed by using a two-step proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) technique from a collection of full-order electromagnetic field solutions, which are generated via a discontinuous Galerkin time-domain (DGTD) solver. The mapping between the time/parameter values and the projection coefficients onto the RB space is approximated by a Gaussian process regression (GPR). Based on the data characteristics of electromagnetic field solutions, the singular value decomposition (SVD) is applied to extract the principal components of the training data of each projection coefficient, and the GPR models are trained for time- and parameter-modes respectively, by which the final global regression function can be represented as a linear combination of these time- and parameter-Gaussian processes. The extraction of the RB and the training of GPR surrogate models are both completed in the offline stage. Then the field solution at any new input time/parameter point can be directly recovered in the online stage as a linear combination of the RB with the regression outputs as the coefficients. In virtue of its non-intrusive nature, the proposed POD-GPR framework, which is equation-free, decouples the offline and online stages completely, and hence can predict the electromagnetic solution fields at unseen parameter locations quickly and effectively. The performance of our method is illustrated by a scattering problem of a multi-layer dielectric cylinder.

X-ray and GeV afterglows and sub-TeV emission of GRB 180720B

GRB 180720B, observed by {\it Fermi}-GBM, with redshift $z=0.653$, isotropic energy $E_{\rm iso}=5.92\times 10^{53}$ erg, and X-ray afterglow observed by the XRT onboard the Neil Gehrels Swift satellite, is here classified as a Binary-driven Hypernova I (BdHN I). BdHN I are long GRBs with a binary progenitor composed of a carbon-oxygen core (CO$_{\rm core}$) and a neutron star (NS) companion with orbital period $\sim 5$ min. The gravitational collapse of the CO$_{\rm core}$ generates a supernova (SN) and a new NS ($ν$NS) at its center. The SN hypercritical accretion onto the companion NS triggers its gravitational collapse forming a black hole (BH). An electrodynamical process near the BH horizon leads to the long-lasting GeV emission with power-law luminosity $L_{\rm GeV}\propto t^{-1.19\pm0.04}$, powered by the BH rotational energy. Correspondingly, we determine the BH mass and spin. The $ν$NS via its pulsar-like emission and fallback accretion injects energy into the magnetized SN ejecta generating synchrotron radiation. This explains the \textit{long-lasting} X-ray afterglow with power-law luminosity $L_X \propto t^{-1.48\pm 0.32}$, energized by the $ν$NS rotational energy. We apply this to GRB 180720B determining the $ν$NS magnetic field and spin. We also analyze the GRB 180720B emission observed by the High-Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.), at $100$-$440$ GeV energies, $10.1$-$12.1$ h after the Fermi-GBM trigger. We propose that this \textit{short-term} radiation of energy $2.4\times 10^{50}$ erg and duration $\sim 10^3$ s, is powered by a "glitch" event that suddenly injects relativistic electrons into the $ν$NS magnetosphere during its slowing down phase.

Dissecting the Energy Budget of a Gamma-Ray Burst Fireball

The jet composition and radiative efficiency of GRBs are poorly constrained from the data. If the jet composition is matter-dominated (i.e. a fireball), the GRB prompt emission spectra would include a dominant thermal component originating from the fireball photosphere, and a non-thermal component presumably originating from internal shocks whose radii are greater than the photosphere radius. We propose a method to directly dissect the GRB fireball energy budget into three components and measure their values by combining the prompt emission and early afterglow data. The measured parameters include the initial dimensionless specific enthalpy density ($η$), bulk Lorentz factors at the photosphere radius ($Γ_{\rm ph}$) and before fireball deceleration ($Γ_0$), the amount of mass loading ($M$), as well as the GRB radiative efficiency ($η_γ$). All the parameters can be derived from the data for a GRB with a dominant thermal spectral component, a deceleration bump feature in the early afterglow lightcurve, and a measured redshift. The results only weakly depend on the density $n$ of the interstellar medium when the composition ${\cal Y}$ parameter (typically unity) is specified.

Magnetic field-tuned quantum criticality in optimally electron-doped cuprate thin films

Antiferromagnetic (AF) spin fluctuations are commonly believed to play a key role in electron pairing of cuprate superconductors. In electron-doped cuprates, it is still in paradox about the interplay among different electronic states in quantum perturbations, especially between superconducting and magnetic states. Here, we report a systematic transport study on cation-optimized La2-xCexCuO4 (x = 0.10) thin films in high magnetic fields. We find an AF quantum phase transition near 60 T, where the Hall number jumps from nH =-x to nH = 1-x, resembling the change of nH at the AF boundary (xAF = 0.14) tuned by Ce doping. In the AF region a spin dependent state manifesting anomalous positive magnetoresistance is observed, which is closely related to superconductivity. Once the AF state is suppressed by magnetic field, a polarized ferromagnetic state is predicted, reminiscent of the recently reported ferromagnetic state at the quantum endpoint of the superconducting dome by Ce doping. The magnetic field that drives phase transitions in a similar but distinct manner to doping thereby provides a unique perspective to understand the quantum criticality of electron-doped cuprates.

Towards Energy Efficient Federated Learning over 5G+ Mobile Devices

The continuous convergence of machine learning algorithms, 5G and beyond (5G+) wireless communications, and artificial intelligence (AI) hardware implementation hastens the birth of federated learning (FL) over 5G+ mobile devices, which pushes AI functions to mobile devices and initiates a new era of on-device AI applications. Despite the remarkable progress made in FL, huge energy consumption is one of the most significant obstacles restricting the development of FL over battery-constrained 5G+ mobile devices. To address this issue, in this paper, we investigate how to develop energy efficient FL over 5G+ mobile devices by making a trade-off between energy consumption for "working" (i.e., local computing) and that for "talking" (i.e., wireless communications) in order to boost the overall energy efficiency. Specifically, we first examine energy consumption models for graphics processing unit (GPU) computation and wireless transmissions. Then, we overview the state of the art of integrating FL procedure with energy-efficient learning techniques (e.g., gradient sparsification, weight quantization, pruning, etc.). Finally, we present several potential future research directions for FL over 5G+ mobile devices from the perspective of energy efficiency.
