FSIM: Fluid Element Stacked Intelligent Metasurface for Multiuser Downlink Networks

A fluid element (FE)-aided stacked intelligent metasurface (FSIM) for multiple-input single-output (MISO) communication system is investigated, where a multi-antenna base station (BS) serves multiple single-antenna users through FSIM. Unlike conventional SIM with fixed meta-atom deployment, the architecture allows the meta-atoms in each layer to move within a predefined fluidic region to further increase the spatial diversity. By jointly optimizing the two-dimensional meta-atom positions, BS transmit beamforming, and FSIM phase-shifts, the cascaded BS-FSIM-user channels can be flexibly reconfigured to enhance the desired signals and suppress multiuser interference. The proposed sum-rate maximization problem is highly non-convex and nonlinear due to the coupled solutions of element position, beamforming, and phase-shift. To address this challenge, an alternating optimization (AO) algorithm is developed to iteratively update these variables. The beamforming and FSIM phase-shift subproblems are transformed into semi-definite programming problems and solved by using successive convex approximation (SCA), first-order Taylor approximation, and penalty-based rank-one relaxation, whilst the FE position subproblem is handled through a projected gradient-based update. Simulation results reveal that a compact FSIM with a small inter-layer thickness is preferable, as increasing the thickness weakens inter-layer coupling and degrades the achievable sum rate. Results also demonstrate that the proposed FSIM significantly outperforms conventional SIMs with fixed positions, patch-based structures, partial fluidity, restricted fluid regions, and existing flexible intelligent metasurfaces. Furthermore, the proposed AO-based algorithm achieves superior rate performance compared to sub-schemes, metaheuristic methods, and conventional beamforming benchmarks.

Energy Efficient Active Stacked Intelligent Metasurfaces

This paper investigates an energy-efficient active stacked intelligent metasurfaces (ASIM)-assisted downlink transmission framework, where a multi-antenna base station (BS) serves multiple users through a multi-layer metasurface architecture. Unlike conventional passive intelligent surfaces, the considered ASIM employs active amplification and multiple transmissive layers to enhance electromagnetic wave manipulation. We aim to maximize the system energy efficiency (EE) by jointly optimizing the BS beamforming and ASIM configurations under user quality-of-service and amplification constraints. The resulting problem is highly coupled and non-convex due to the cascaded near-field channel and multi-layer metasurface structure. To address this challenge, we first transform the original problem through Dinkelbach, Lagrangian dual, and quadratic transformations. An alternative optimization framework is then developed, where the BS beamforming subproblem is solved via successive convex approximation (SCA), while the ASIM configuration is optimized using Bayesian optimization based on a Gaussian process surrogate model. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed scheme significantly improves the achievable EE compared to conventional passive SIM and heuristic benchmark methods. Furthermore, the impacts of amplification capability, number of metasurface layers, and inter-layer spacing on system performance are investigated, providing useful design insights for future active metasurface-assisted wireless networks.

Aerial Multi-Functional RIS in Fluid Antennas-Aided Full-Duplex Networks: A Self-Optimized Hybrid Deep Reinforcement Learning Approach

To address high data traffic demands of sixth-generation (6G) networks, this paper proposes a novel architecture that integrates autonomous aerial vehicles (AAVs) and multi-functional reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (MF-RISs) as AM-RIS in fluid antenna (FA)-assisted full-duplex (FD) networks. The AM-RIS provides hybrid functionalities, including signal reflection, amplification, and energy harvesting (EH), potentially improving both signal coverage and sustainability. Meanwhile, FA facilitates fine-grained spatial adaptability at FD-enabled base station (BS), which complements residual self-interference (SI) suppression. We aim at maximizing the overall energy efficiency (EE) by jointly optimizing transmit DL beamforming at BS, UL user power, configuration of AM-RIS, and positions of the FA and AM-RIS. Owing to the hybrid continuous-discrete parameters and high dimensionality of the intractable problem, we have conceived a self-optimized multi-agent hybrid deep reinforcement learning (DRL) framework (SOHRL), which integrates multi-agent deep Q-networks (DQN) and multi-agent proximal policy optimization (PPO), respectively handling discrete and continuous actions. To enhance self-adaptability, an attention-driven state representation and meta-level hyperparameter optimization are incorporated, enabling multi-agents to autonomously adjust learning hyperparameters. Simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed AM-RIS-enabled FA-aided FD networks empowered by SOHRL algorithm. The results reveal that SOHRL outperforms benchmarks of the case without attention mechanism and conventional hybrid/multi-agent/standalone DRL. Moreover, AM-RIS in FD achieves the highest EE compared to half-duplex, conventional rigid antenna arrays, partial EH, and conventional RIS without amplification, highlighting its potential as a compelling solution for EE-aware wireless networks.

Parametrized Sharing for Multi-Agent Hybrid DRL for Multiple Multi-Functional RISs-Aided Downlink NOMA Networks

Multi-functional reconfigurable intelligent surface (MF-RIS) is conceived to address the communication efficiency thanks to its extended signal coverage from its active RIS capability and self-sustainability from energy harvesting (EH). We investigate the architecture of multi-MF-RISs to assist non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) downlink networks. We formulate an energy efficiency (EE) maximization problem by optimizing power allocation, transmit beamforming and MF-RIS configurations of amplitudes, phase-shifts and EH ratios, as well as the position of MF-RISs, while satisfying constraints of available power, user rate requirements, and self-sustainability property. We design a parametrized sharing scheme for multi-agent hybrid deep reinforcement learning (PMHRL), where the multi-agent proximal policy optimization (PPO) and deep-Q network (DQN) handle continuous and discrete variables, respectively. The simulation results have demonstrated that proposed PMHRL has the highest EE compared to other benchmarks, including cases without parametrized sharing, pure PPO and DQN. Moreover, the proposed multi-MF-RISs-aided downlink NOMA achieves the highest EE compared to scenarios of no-EH/amplification, traditional RISs, and deployment without RISs/MF-RISs under different multiple access.

6D Movable Metasurface (6DMM) in Downlink NOMA Transmissions

This letter proposes a novel six-dimensional movable metasurface (6DMM)-assisted downlink non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) system, in which a conventional base station (BS) equipped with fixed antennas serves multiple users with the assistance of a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) with six-dimensional spatial configurability. In contrast to traditional RIS with static surface, the proposed 6DMM architecture allows each element to dynamically adjust its position and orient the whole metasurface in yaw-pitch-roll axes, enabling both in spatial and electromagnetic controls. We formulate a sum-rate maximization problem that jointly optimizes the BS NOMA-based beamforming, phase-shifts, element positions, and rotation angles of metasurface under constraints of NOMA power levels, unit-modulus of phase-shifts, power budget, inter-element separation and boundaries of element position/orientation. Due to non-convexity and high-dimensionality, we employ a probabilistic cross-entropy optimization (CEO) scheme to iteratively refine the solution distribution based on maximizing likelihood and elite solution sampling. Simulation results show that the proposed CEO-based 6DMM-NOMA architecture achieves substantial rate performance gains compared to 6DMM sub-structures, conventional static RIS, and other multiple access mechanisms. It also highlights the effectiveness of CEO providing probabilistic optimization for solving high-dimensional scalable metasurface.

Liquid Intelligent Metasurface for Fluid Antennas-Assisted Networks

This paper proposes a novel liquid intelligent metasurface (LIM)-assisted downlink multi-user multiple-input single-output (MISO) system, wherein both the base station (BS) and the metasurface are respectively equipped with fluid antennas (FA) and liquid elements. Unlike conventional reconfigurable metasurface-assisted systems with static geometries, the proposed architecture enables joint electromagnetic and spatial reconfigurability by allowing both the FA-empowered BS (FAS) and LIM to dynamically adjust their small-scale positions in addition to beamforming and phase-shift controls. We formulate a sum-rate maximization problem that jointly optimizes the BS beamforming, LIM phase-shifts, and the positions of fluid antennas and liquid elements. The problem is highly non-convex due to coupling between variables, fractional expressions, unit-modulus constraints as well as spatial correlation functions. To address these challenges, we adopt alternating optimization and introduce auxiliary variables and employ Lagrangian dual and quadratic transformation, successive convex approximation (SCA) as well as the penalty convex-concave procedure (PCCP) to solve the respective subproblems. Simulation results have demonstrated that the proposed FAS-LIM architecture significantly outperforms benchmark methods employing conventional fixed metasurface and fixed antenna arrays in terms of various parameter settings.

Multi-Functional RIS-Enabled in SAGIN for IoT: A Hybrid Deep Reinforcement Learning Approach with Compressed Twin-Models

A space-air-ground integrated network (SAGIN) for Internet of Things (IoT) network architecture is investigated, empowered by multi-functional reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (MF-RIS) capable of simultaneously reflecting, amplifying, and harvesting wireless energy. The MF-RIS plays a pivotal role in addressing the energy shortages of low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites operating in the shadowed regions, while accounting for both communication and computing energy consumption across the SAGIN nodes. To maximize the long-term energy efficiency (EE) of IoT devices, we formulate a joint optimization problem over the MF-RIS parameters, including signal amplification, phase-shifts, energy harvesting ratio, and active element selection as well as the SAGIN parameters of beamforming vectors, high-altitude platform station (HAPS) deployment, IoT device association, and computing capability. The formulated problem is highly non-convex and non-linear and contains mixed discrete-continuous parameters. To tackle this, we conceive a compressed hybrid twin-model enhanced multi-agent deep reinforcement learning (CHIMERA) framework, which integrates semantic state-action compression and parametrized sharing under hybrid reinforcement learning to efficiently explore suitable complex actions. The simulation results have demonstrated that the proposed CHIMERA scheme substantially outperforms the conventional benchmarks, including fixed-configuration or non-harvesting MF-RIS, traditional RIS, and no-RIS cases, as well as centralized and multi-agent deep reinforcement learning baselines in terms of the highest EE. Moreover, the proposed SAGIN-MF-RIS architecture in IoT network achieves superior EE performance due to its complementary coverage, offering notable advantages over either standalone satellite, aerial, or ground-only deployments.

Joint Active and Passive Beamforming for Energy-Efficient STARS with Quantization and Element Selection in ISAC Systems

This paper investigates a simultaneously transmitting and reflecting reconfigurable intelligent surface (STARS)-aided integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) systems in support of full-space energy-efficient data transmissions and target sensing. We formulate an energy efficiency (EE) maximization problem that jointly optimizes a dual-functional radar-communication (DFRC)-empowered base station (BS), considering its ISAC-based active beamforming, along with the passive STARS beamforming configurations of amplitudes, phase shifts, quantization levels, and element selection. Furthermore, relaxed/independent/coupled STARS are considered to examine architectural flexibility. To tackle the non-convex and mixed-integer problem, we propose a joint active-passive beamforming, quantization and element selection (AQUES) scheme based on the alternating optimization: Lagrangian dual and Dinkelbach's transformation tackle fractional equations, whereas successive convex approximation (SCA) convexifies the non-solvable problem; Penalty dual decomposition (PDD) framework and penalty-based convex-concave programming (PCCP) procedure solve amplitude and phase-shifts with the equality constraint; Heuristic search iteratively decides the optimal quantization level; Integer relaxation deals with the discrete element selection variables. Simulation results demonstrate that STARS-ISAC with the proposed AQUES scheme significantly enhances EE while meeting communication rates and sensing quality requirements. The coupled STARS further highlights its superior EE performance over independent and relaxed STARS thanks to its reduced hardware complexity. Moreover, AQUES outperforms existing configurations and benchmark methods in the open literature across various network parameters and deployment scenarios.

Federated Deep Reinforcement Learning for Energy Efficient Multi-Functional RIS-Assisted Low-Earth Orbit Networks

In this paper, a novel network architecture that deploys the multi-functional reconfigurable intelligent surface (MF-RIS) in low-Earth orbit (LEO) is proposed. Unlike traditional RIS with only signal reflection capability, the MF-RIS can reflect, refract, and amplify signals, as well as harvest energy from wireless signals. Given the high energy demands in shadow regions where solar energy is unavailable, MF-RIS is deployed in LEO to enhance signal coverage and improve energy efficiency (EE). To address this, we formulate a long-term EE optimization problem by determining the optimal parameters for MF-RIS configurations, including amplification and phase-shifts, energy harvesting ratios, and LEO transmit beamforming. To address the complex non-convex and non-linear problem, a federated learning enhanced multi-agent deep deterministic policy gradient (FEMAD) scheme is designed. Multi-agent DDPG of each agent can provide the optimal action policy from its interaction to environments, whereas federated learning enables the hidden information exchange among multi-agents. In numerical results, we can observe significant EE improvements compared to the other benchmarks, including centralized deep reinforcement learning as well as distributed multi-agent deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG). Additionally, the proposed LEO-MF-RIS architecture has demonstrated its effectiveness, achieving the highest EE performance compared to the scenarios of fixed/no energy harvesting in MF-RIS, traditional reflection-only RIS, and deployment without RISs/MF-RISs.

RIS-Aided Fluid Antenna Array-Mounted UAV Networks

This paper investigates reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) downlink networks with fluid antennas (FA), where RIS enables non-line-of-sight (NLoS) transmissions. Moreover, the FA is equipped on the UAV offering dynamic antenna position adjustment, enhancing spatial diversity besides UAV deployment. We aim at total downlink rate maximization while ensuring minimum user rate requirement. We consider joint optimization of active UAV beamforming, passive RIS beamforming, UAV deployment and FA position adjustment. To address the complex problem, we propose beamfomring for RIS/UAV and FA-UAV deployment (BRAUD) scheme by employing alternative optimization, successive convex approximation (SCA) and sequential rank-one constraint relaxation (SROCR) method for the decomposed subproblems. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of RIS-FA-UAV, achieving the highest rate among existing architectures without FA/UAV/RIS deployment and without proper beamforming. Moreover, BRAUD achieves the highest rate among benchmarks of drop-rank method, heuristic optimizations and conventional zero-forcing beamforming as well as random method.

Energy Efficient Beamforming Training in Terahertz Communication Systems

Terahertz (THz) enables promising Tbps-level wireless transmission thanks to its prospect of ultra-huge spectrum utilization and narrow beamforming in the next sixth-generation (6G) communication system. Compared to millimeter wave (mmWave), THz intrinsically possesses compellingly severer molecular absorption and high pathloss serving confined coverage area. These defects should be well conquered under the employment of ultra-thin 3D beamforming with enormous deployed antennas with high beam gains. However, pencil-beams require substantially high overhead of time and power to train its optimal THz beamforming direction. We propose an energy efficient (EE) oriented THz beamforming (EETBF) scheme by separating the original complex problem into beamforming training (EETBF-BT) acquirement and learning-enabled training power assignment (EETBF-PA). The historical beam data is employed to update next beam selection policy. The performance results have demonstrated that the proposed EETBF outperforms the existing benchmarks leveraging full beam search, iterative search, linear/binary search as well as non-power-control based mechanism in open literature. Our proposed EETBF scheme results in the lowest training latency and power consumption, achieving the highest effective rate and EE performance.

Multi-Agent Deep Reinforcement Learning for Energy Efficient Multi-Hop STAR-RIS-Assisted Transmissions

Simultaneously transmitting and reflecting reconfigurable intelligent surface (STAR-RIS) provides a promising way to expand coverage in wireless communications. However, limitation of single STAR-RIS inspire us to integrate the concept of multi-hop transmissions, as focused on RIS in existing research. Therefore, we propose the novel architecture of multi-hop STAR-RISs to achieve a wider range of full-plane service coverage. In this paper, we intend to solve active beamforming of the base station and passive beamforming of STAR-RISs, aiming for maximizing the energy efficiency constrained by hardware limitation of STAR-RISs. Furthermore, we investigate the impact of the on-off state of STAR-RIS elements on energy efficiency. To tackle the complex problem, a Multi-Agent Global and locAl deep Reinforcement learning (MAGAR) algorithm is designed. The global agent elevates the collaboration among local agents, which focus on individual learning. In numerical results, we observe the significant improvement of MAGAR compared to the other benchmarks, including Q-learning, multi-agent deep Q network (DQN) with golbal reward, and multi-agent DQN with local rewards. Moreover, the proposed architecture of multi-hop STAR-RISs achieves the highest energy efficiency compared to mode switching based STAR-RISs, conventional RISs and deployment without RISs or STAR-RISs.

MARS: Message Passing for Antenna and RF Chain Selection for Hybrid Beamforming in MIMO Communication Systems

In this paper, we consider a prospective receiving hybrid beamforming structure consisting of several radio frequency (RF) chains and abundant antenna elements in multi-input multi-output (MIMO) systems. Due to conventional costly full connections, we design an enhanced partially connected beamformer employing a low-density parity-check (LDPC)-based structure. As a benefit of the LDPC-based structure, information can be exchanged among clustered RF/antenna groups, which results in a low computational complexity order. Advanced message passing (MP) capable of inferring and transferring information among different paths is designed to support the LDPC-based hybrid beamformer. We propose a message-passing enhanced antenna and RF chain selection (MARS) scheme for minimizing the operational power of antennas and RF chains of the receiver as well as hybrid beamforming. Furthermore, sequential and parallel MP schemes for MARS are designed, namely, MARS-S and MARS-P, respectively, to address the convergence speed issue. A heuristic genetic algorithm is designed for receiving hybrid beamforming, comprising gene generation initialization, elite selection, crossover, and mutation. Simulations validate the convergence of both the MARS-P and the MARS-S algorithms. Due to the asynchronous information transfer of MARS-P, it requires higher power than MARS-S, which strikes a compelling balance among power consumption, convergence, and computational complexity. It is also demonstrated that the proposed MARS scheme outperforms the existing benchmarks using the heuristic method of fully/partially connected architectures in the open literature by requiring the lowest power and realizing the highest energy efficiency.

Attention-Enhanced Deep Learning for Device-Free Through-the-Wall Presence Detection Using Indoor WiFi Systems

Accurate detection of human presence in indoor environments is important for various applications, such as energy management and security. In this paper, we propose a novel system for human presence detection using the channel state information (CSI) of WiFi signals. Our system named attention-enhanced deep learning for presence detection (ALPD) employs an attention mechanism to automatically select informative subcarriers from the CSI data and a bidirectional long short-term memory (LSTM) network to capture temporal dependencies in CSI. Additionally, we utilize a static feature to improve the accuracy of human presence detection in static states. We evaluate the proposed ALPD system by deploying a pair of WiFi access points (APs) for collecting CSI dataset, which is further compared with several benchmarks. The results demonstrate that our ALPD system outperforms the benchmarks in terms of accuracy, especially in the presence of interference. Moreover, bidirectional transmission data is beneficial to training improving stability and accuracy, as well as reducing the costs of data collection for training. To elaborate a little further, we have also evaluated the potential of ALPD for detecting more challenging human activities in multi-rooms. Overall, our proposed ALPD system shows promising results for human presence detection using WiFi CSI signals.

D-STAR: Dual Simultaneously Transmitting and Reflecting Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces for Joint Uplink/Downlink Transmission

The joint uplink/downlink (JUD) design of simultaneously transmitting and reflecting reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (STAR-RIS) is conceived in support of both uplink (UL) and downlink (DL) users. Furthermore, the dual STAR-RISs (D-STAR) concept is conceived as a promising architecture for 360-degree full-plane service coverage, including UL/DL users located between the base station (BS) and the D-STAR as well as beyond. The corresponding regions are termed as primary (P) and secondary (S) regions. Both BS/users exist in the P-region, but only users are located in the S-region. The primary STAR-RIS (STAR-P) plays an important role in terms of tackling the P-region inter-user interference, the self-interference (SI) from the BS and from the reflective as well as refractive UL users imposed on the DL receiver. By contrast, the secondary STAR-RIS (STAR-S) aims for mitigating the S-region interferences. The non-linear and non-convex rate-maximization problem formulated is solved by alternating optimization amongst the decomposed convex sub-problems of the BS beamformer, and the D-STAR amplitude as well as phase shift configurations. We also propose a D-STAR based active beamforming and passive STAR-RIS amplitude/phase (DBAP) optimization scheme to solve the respective sub-problems by Lagrange dual with Dinkelbach's transformation, alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) with successive convex approximation (SCA), and penalty convex-concave procedure (PCCP). Our simulation results reveal that the proposed D-STAR architecture outperforms the conventional single RIS, single STAR-RIS, and half-duplex networks. The proposed DBAP of D-STAR outperforms the state-of-the-art solutions found in the open literature for different numbers of quantization levels, geographic deployment, transmit power and for diverse numbers of transmit antennas, patch partitions as well as D-STAR elements.

Time-Selective RNN for Device-Free Multi-Room Human Presence Detection Using WiFi CSI

Device-free human presence detection is a crucial technology for various applications, including home automation, security, and healthcare. While camera-based systems have traditionally been used for this purpose, they raise privacy concerns. To address this issue, recent research has explored the use of wireless channel state information (CSI) extracted from commercial WiFi access points (APs) to provide detailed channel characteristics. In this paper, we propose a device-free human presence detection system for multi-room scenarios using a time-selective conditional dual feature extract recurrent network (TCD-FERN). Our system is designed to capture significant time features on current human features using a dynamic and static data preprocessing technique. We extract both moving and spatial features of people and differentiate between line-of-sight (LoS) and non-line-of-sight (NLoS) cases. Subcarrier fusion is carried out in order to provide more objective variation of each sample while reducing the computational complexity. A voting scheme is further adopted to mitigate the feature attenuation problem caused by room partitions, with around 3% improvement of human presence detection accuracy. Experimental results have revealed the significant improvement of leveraging subcarrier fusion, dual-feature recurrent network, time selection and condition mechanisms. Compared to the existing works in open literature, our proposed TCD-FERN system can achieve above 97% of human presence detection accuracy for multi-room scenarios with the adoption of fewer WiFi APs.

Robust Active and Passive Beamforming for RIS-Assisted Full-Duplex Systems under Imperfect CSI

The sixth-generation (6G) wireless technology recognizes the potential of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) as an effective technique for intelligently manipulating channel paths through reflection to serve desired users. Full-duplex (FD) systems, enabling simultaneous transmission and reception from a base station (BS), offer the theoretical advantage of doubled spectrum efficiency. However, the presence of strong self-interference (SI) in FD systems significantly degrades performance, which can be mitigated by leveraging the capabilities of RIS. Moreover, accurately obtaining channel state information (CSI) from RIS poses a critical challenge. Our objective is to maximize downlink (DL) user data rates while ensuring quality-of-service (QoS) for uplink (UL) users under imperfect CSI from reflected channels. To address this, we propose a robust active BS and passive RIS beamforming (RAPB) scheme for RIS-FD, accounting for both SI and imperfect CSI. RAPB incorporates distributionally robust design, conditional value-at-risk (CVaR), and penalty convex-concave programming (PCCP) techniques. Simulation results demonstrate the UL/DL rate improvement are achieved by considering different levels of imperfect CSI. The proposed RAPB schemes validate their effectiveness across different RIS deployments and RIS/BS configurations. Benefited from robust beamforming, RAPB outperforms the existing methods in terms of non-robustness, deployment without RIS, conventional approximation, and half-duplex systems.

WiRiS: Transformer for RIS-Assisted Device-Free Sensing for Joint People Counting and Localization using Wi-Fi CSI

Channel State Information (CSI) is widely adopted as a feature for indoor localization. Taking advantage of the abundant information from the CSI, people can be accurately sensed even without equipped devices. However, the positioning error increases severely in non-line-of-sight (NLoS) regions. Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has been introduced to improve signal coverage in NLoS areas, which can re-direct and enhance reflective signals with massive meta-material elements. In this paper, we have proposed a Transformer-based RIS-assisted device-free sensing for joint people counting and localization (WiRiS) system to precisely predict the number of people and their corresponding locations through configuring RIS. A series of predefined RIS beams is employed to create inputs of fingerprinting CSI features as sequence-to-sequence learning database for Transformer. We have evaluated the performance of proposed WiRiS system in both ray-tracing simulators and experiments. Both simulation and real-world experiments demonstrate that people counting accuracy exceeds 90\%, and the localization error can achieve the centimeter-level, which outperforms the existing benchmarks without employment of RIS.
