Millimeter-wave spectroscopy of the $^{13}$CH$_3$OD isotopic species of methyl alcohol

The dramatic increase in sensitivity, spectral coverage and resolution of radio astronomical facilities in recent years has opened new possibilities for observation of chemical differentiation and isotopic fractionation in protostellar sources to shed light on their spatial and temporal evolution. In warm interstellar environments, methanol is an abundant species, hence spectral data for its isotopic forms are of special interest. In the present work, the millimeter-wave spectrum of the $^{13}$CH$_3$OD isotopologue has been investigated over the region from 150$-$510 GHz to provide a set of transition frequencies for potential astronomical application. The focus is on two types of prominent $^{13}$CH$_3$OD spectral groupings, namely the $a$-type $^qR$-branch multiplets and the $b$-type $Q$-branches. Line positions are reported for the $^qR(J)$ clusters for $J = 3$ to 10 for the $v_{\rm t} = 0$ and 1 torsional states, and for a number of $v_{\rm t} = 0$ and 1 $^rQ(J)$ or $^pQ(J)$ line series up to $J = 25$. The frequencies have been fitted to a multi-parameter torsion-rotation Hamiltonian, and upper level excitation energies have been calculated from the resulting molecular constants.

Rotational spectroscopy of isotopic species of methyl mercaptan at millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths: CH$_3$$^{34}$SH

Methyl mercaptan (CH$_3$SH) is an important sulfur-bearing species in the interstellar medium, terrestrial environment, and potentially in planetary atmospheres. The aim of the present study is to provide accurate spectroscopic parameters for the most abundant minor isotopolog CH$_3$$^{34}$SH to support radio astronomical observations at millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths. The rotational spectrum of CH$_3$$^{34}$SH, which is complicated by the large-amplitude internal rotation of the CH$_3$ group versus the $^{34}$SH frame, was investigated in the 49$-$510 GHz and 1.1$-$1.5 THz frequency ranges in natural isotopic abundance. The analysis of the spectrum was performed up to the second excited torsional state, and the obtained data were modeled with the RAM36 program. A fit within experimental accuracy was obtained with a RAM Hamiltonian model that uses 72 parameters. Predictions based on this fit are used to search for CH$_3$$^{34}$SH with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) toward the hot molecular core Sgr B2(N2), but blends with emission lines of other species prevent its firm identification in this source.

Deuterated methanol toward NGC 7538-IRS1

We investigate the deuteration of methanol towards the high-mass star forming region NGC 7538-IRS1. We have carried out a multi-transition study of CH$_3$OH, $^{13}$CH$_3$OH and of the deuterated fllavors, CH$_2$DOH and CH$_3$OD, between 1.0--1.4 mm with the IRAM-30~m antenna. In total, 34 $^{13}$CH$_3$OH, 13 CH$_2$DOH lines and 20 CH$_3$OD lines spanning a wide range of upper-state energies (E$_{up}$) were detected. From the detected transitions, we estimate that the measured D/H does not exceed 1$\%$, with a measured CH$_2$DOH/CH$_3$OH and CH$_3$OD/CH$_3$OH of about (32$\pm$8)$\times$10$^{-4}$ and (10$\pm$4)$\times$10$^{-4}$, respectively. This finding is consistent with the hypothesis of a short-time scale formation during the pre-stellar phase. We find a relative abundance ratio CH$_2$DOH/CH$_3$OD of 3.2 $\pm$ 1.5. This result is consistent with a statistical deuteration. We cannot exclude H/D exchanges between water and methanol if water deuteration is of the order 0.1$\%$, as suggested by recent Herschel observations.

Millimeter Wave and Terahertz Spectra and Global Fit of Torsion-Rotation Transitions in the Ground, First and Second Excited Torsional States of 13CH3OH Methanol

Methanol is observed in a wide range of astrophysical sources throughout the universe, and comprehensive databases of the millimeter and THz spectra of CH3OH and its principal isotopologues represent important tools for the astronomical community. A previous combined analysis of microwave and millimeter wave spectra of 13CH3OH together with Fourier transform far-infrared spectra was limited to the first two torsional states, v_t = 0 and 1, for J values up to 20. The limits on frequency and quantum number coverage have recently been extended by new millimeter and THz measurements on several different spectrometers in the Cologne laboratory in the frequency windows 34-70 GHz, 75-120 GHz, 240-340 GHz, 360-450 GHz and 1.12-1.50 THz. With the new data, the global treatment has now been expanded to include the first three torsional states for J values up to 30. The current 13CH3OH data set contains about 2,300 microwave, millimeter-wave, sub-millimeter and THz lines and about 17,100 Fourier-transform far-infrared lines, representing the most recent available information in the quantum number ranges J </= 30, K </= 13 and v_t </= 2. The transitions have been successfully fitted to within the assigned measurement uncertainties of +/-50 kHz for most of the frequency-measured (i.e. MW, MMW, Sub-MMW, THz) lines and +/-6 MHz for the FIR lines. A convergent global fit was achieved using 103 adjustable parameters to reach an overall weighted standard deviation of 1.37. Our new C-13 methanol database is improved substantially compared to the existing one (Li-Hong Xu, F.J. Lovas, J. Phys. Chem. Ref. Data 26 (1997) 17-156), and will be available in the Cologne Database for Molecular Spectroscopy, CDMS (http://www.astro.unikoeln.de/cdms/). (Abbreviated)

Deuterated molecules in Orion KL from Herschel/HIFI

We present a comprehensive study of the deuterated molecules detected in the fullband HIFI survey of the Orion KL region. Ammonia, formaldehyde, and methanol and their singly deuterated isotopologues are each detected through numerous transitions in this survey with a wide range in optical depths and excitation conditions. In conjunction with a recent study of the abundance of HDO and H$_2$O in Orion KL, this study yields the best constraints on deuterium fractionation in an interstellar molecular cloud to date. As previous studies have found, both the Hot Core and Compact Ridge regions within Orion KL contain significant abundances of deuterated molecules, suggesting an origin in cold grain mantles. In the Hot Core, we find that ammonia is roughly a factor of 2 more fractionated than water. In the Compact Ridge, meanwhile, we find similar deuterium fractionation in water, formaldehyde, and methanol, with D/H ratios of (2---8) $\times$ $10^{-3}$. The [CH$_2$DOH]/[CH$_3$OD] ratio in the Compact Ridge is found to be $1.2 \pm 0.3$. The Hot Core generally has lower deuterium fractionation than the Compact Ridge, suggesting a slightly warmer origin, or a greater contribution from warm gas phase chemistry.

Methyl mercaptan (CH3SH) as a probe for $\mu$ variation

Torsion-rotation transitions in molecules exhibiting hindered internal rotation possess enhanced sensitivities to a variation of the proton-to-electron mass ratio. This enhancement occurs due to a cancellation of energies associated with the torsional and rotational degrees of freedom of the molecule. This effect occurs generally in every internal rotor molecule, but is exceptionally large in methanol. In this paper we calculate the sensitivity coefficients of methyl mercaptan, the thiol analogue of methanol. The obtained sensitivity coefficients in this molecule range from $K_\mu=-14.8$ to $+12.2$ for transitions with a lower-level excitation energy below 10\,cm$^{-1}$.

Sensitivity of Transitions in Internal Rotor Molecules to a Possible Variation of the Proton-to-Electron Mass Ratio

Recently, methanol was identified as a sensitive target system to probe variations of the proton-to-electron mass ratio $\mu$ [Jansen \emph{et al.} Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{106}, 100801 (2011)]. The high sensitivity of methanol originates from the interplay between overall rotation and hindered internal rotation of the molecule -- i.e. transitions that convert internal rotation energy into overall rotation energy, or vice versa, give rise to an enhancement of the sensitivity coefficient, $K_{\mu}$. As internal rotation is a common phenomenon in polyatomic molecules, it is likely that other molecules display similar or even larger effects. In this paper we generalize the concepts that form the foundation of the high sensitivity in methanol and use this to construct an approximate model which allows to estimate the sensitivities of transitions in internal rotor molecules with $C_{3v}$ symmetry, without performing a full calculation of energy levels. We find that a reliable estimate of transition sensitivities can be obtained from the three rotational constants ($A$, $B$, and $C$) and three torsional constants ($F$, $V_3$ and $\rho$). This model is verified by comparing obtained sensitivities for methanol, acetaldehyde, acetamide, methyl formate and acetic acid with a full analysis of the molecular Hamiltonian. From the molecules considered, methanol appears to be the most suitable candidate for laboratory and cosmological tests searching for a possible variation of $\mu$.
