Majorana stellar representation for mixed-spin $(s,\frac{1}{2})$ systems

By describing the evolution of a quantum state with the trajectories of the Majorana stars on a Bloch sphere, Majorana's stellar representation provides an intuitive geometric perspective to comprehend a quantum system with high-dimensional Hilbert space. However, the problem of the representation of a two-spin coupling system on a Bloch sphere has not been solved satisfactorily yet. Here, we present a practical method to resolve the problem for the mixed-spin $(s, 1/2)$ system. The system can be decomposed into two spins: spin-$(s+1/2)$ and spin-$(s-1/2)$ at the coupling bases, which can be regarded as independent spins. Besides, we may write any pure state as a superposition of two orthonormal states with one spin-$(s+1/2)$ state and the other spin-$(s-1/2)$ state. Thus, the whole state can be regarded as a state of a pseudo spin-$1/2$. In this way, the mixed spin decomposes into three spins. Therefore, we can represent the state by $(2s+1)+(2s-1)+1=4s+1$ sets of stars on a Bloch sphere. Finally, to demonstrate our theory, we give some examples that indeed show laconic and symmetric patterns on the Bloch sphere, and unveil the properties of the high-spin system by analyzing the trajectories of the Majorana stars on a Bloch sphere.

Comparison of quantum kinetic theory and time-dependent Dirac equation approaches in vacuum pair production and the bound states resonance enhanced mechanism

A remarkable quantitative agreement is found between the non-Markovian quantum kinetic approach and the time-dependent Dirac equation approach for a large region of Keldysh parameter, in the investigation of electron-positron pair production in the electric fields which is spatially homogeneous and envelope pulse shaped. If a sub-critical bound potential is immersed in this background field, the TDDE results show that the creation probability will be enhanced by the bound states resonance by two orders of magnitude. We also establish a computing resources greatly saved TDDE formalism for spatially homogeneous field.

The Role of Interaction in the Pairing of Two Spin-orbit Coupled Fermions

We investigate the role of a repulsive s-wave interaction in the two-body problem in the presence of spin orbit couplings, motivated by current interests in exploring exotic superfluid phases in spin-orbit coupled Fermi gases. For weak spin orbit coupling where the density of states is not significantly altered, we analytically show that the high-energy states become more important in determining the binding energy when the interaction strength decreases. Consequently, tuning the interaction gives rise to a rich ground state behavior, including a zigzag of the ground state momentum or inducing transitions among the meta-stable states. By exactly solving the two-body problem for a spin-orbit coupled Fermi mixture, we demonstrate that our analysis can also apply to the case when the density of states is significantly modified by the spin-orbit coupling. Our findings pave the way for understanding and controlling the paring of fermions in the presence of spin orbit couplings.

Quantum information with conserved quantities

Conserved quantities are crucial in quantum physics. Here we discuss a general scenario of Hamiltonians. All the Hamiltonians within this scenario share a common conserved quantity form. For unitary parametrization processes, the characteristic operator of this scenario is analytically provided, as well as the corresponding quantum Fisher information (QFI). As the application of this scenario, we focus on two classes of Hamiltonians: su(2) category and canonical category. Several specific physical systems in these two categories are discussed in detail. Besides, we also calculate an alternative form of QFI in this scenario.

Pump Electron-Positron Pairs from Potential Well

In this paper we show that electron-positron pairs can be pumped inexhaustibly with a constant production rate from the one dimensional potential well with oscillating depth or width. Bound states embedded in the the Dirac sea can be pulled out and pushed to the positive continuum, and become scattering states. Pauli block, which dominant the saturation of pair creation in the static super-critical potential well, can be broken by the ejection of electrons. We find that the width oscillating mode is more efficient that the depth oscillating mode. In the adiabatic limit, pair number as a function of upper boundary of the oscillating, will reveal the diving of the bound states.

Characterization of symmetry-protected topological phases in polymerized models by trajectories of Majorana stars

By using Majorana's stellar representation, we give a clear geometrical interpretation of the topological phases of inversion-symmetric polymerized models by mapping the Bloch states of multi-band systems to Majorana stars on the Bloch sphere. While trajectories of Majorana stars of a filled Bloch band exhibit quite different geometrical structures for topologically trivial and nontrivial phases, we further demonstrate that these structures are uniquely determined by distributions of Majorana stars of two high-symmetrical momentum states, which have different parities for topologically different states.

Enhanced correlation of electron-positron pair in the two and three dimensions

Early-time electron-positron correlation in vacuum pair-production in an external field is investigated. The entangled electron and positron wave functions are obtained analytically in the configuration and momentum spaces. It is shown that, relative to that of the one-dimensional theory, two- and three-dimensional calculations yield enhanced spatial correlation and broadened momentum spectrum. In fact, at early times the electron and positron almost coincide spatially. The correlation also depends on the direction of the applied field. For the spatial correlation, the transverse correlation is stronger than the longitudinal one.

Quantum phase transition in a three-level atom-molecule system

We adopt a three-level bosonic model to investigate the quantum phase transition in an ultracold atom-molecule conversion system which includes one atomic mode and two molecular modes. Through thoroughly exploring the properties of energy level structure, fidelity, and adiabatical geometric phase, we confirm that the system exists a second-order phase transition from an atommolecule mixture phase to a pure molecule phase. We give the explicit expression of the critical point and obtain two scaling laws to characterize this transition. In particular we find that both the critical exponents and the behaviors of ground-state geometric phase change obviously in contrast to a similar two-level model. Our analytical calculations show that the ground-state geometric phase jumps from zero to ?pi/3 at the critical point. This discontinuous behavior has been checked by numerical simulations and it can be used to identify the phase transition in the system.

Manipulation of atom-to-molecule conversion in a magnetic lattice

The atom-to-molecule conversion by the technique of optical Feshbach resonance in a magnetic lattice is studied in the mean-field approximation. For the case of shallow lattice, we give the dependence of the atom-to-molecule conversion efficiency on the tunnelling strength and the atomic interaction by taking a double-well as an example. We find that one can obtain a high atom-to-molecule conversion by tuning the tunnelling and interaction strengths of the system. For the case of deep lattice, we show that the existence of lattice can improve the atom-to-molecule conversion for certain initial states.

Josephson dynamics of a spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensate in a double well potential

We investigate the quantum dynamics of an experimentally realized spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensate in a double well potential. The spin-orbit coupling can significantly enhance the atomic inter-well tunneling. We find the coexistence of internal and external Josephson effects in the system, which are moreover inherently coupled in a complicated form even in the absence of interatomic interactions. Moreover, we show that the spin-dependent tunneling between two wells can induce a net atomic spin current referred as spin Josephson effects. Such novel spin Josephson effects can be observable for realistically experimental conditions.

Nonlinear Ramsey interferometry with the Rosen-Zener pulses on a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate

We propose a feasible scheme to realize nonlinear Ramsey interferometry with a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate, where the nonlinearity arises from the interaction between coherent atoms. In our scheme, two Rosen-Zener pulses are separated by an intermediate holding period of variable duration and through varying the holding period we have observed nice Ramsey interference patterns in time domain. In contrast to the standard Ramsey fringes our nonlinear Ramsey patterns display diversiform structures ascribed to the interplay of the nonlinearity and asymmetry. In particular, we find that the frequency of the nonlinear Ramsey fringes exactly reflects the strength of nonlinearity as well as the asymmetry of system. Our finding suggests a potential application of the nonlinear Ramsey interferometry in calibrating the atomic parameters such as scattering length and energy spectrum.

Berry Phase in Atom-Molecule Conversion Systems and Fractional Monopole

We investigate the geometric phase or Berry phase of adiabatic quantum evolution in an atom-molecule conversion system, and find that the Berry phase in such system consists of two parts: the usual Berry connection term and a novel term from the nonlinearity brought forth by the atom-molecule conversion. The geometric phase can be viewed as the flux of the magnetic field of a monopole through the surface enclosed by a closed path in parameter space. The charge of the monopole, however, is found to be one third of the elementary charge of the usual quantized monopole.

Shapiro-like Resonance in Ultracold Molecule Production via an Oscillating Magnetic Field

We study the process of production of ultracold molecules from ultracold atoms using a sinusoidally oscillating magnetic field modulation. When the magnetic field is resonant roughly with the molecular binding energy, Shapiro-like resonances are observed. Their resonance profiles are well fitted by the Lorentzian functions. The line widths depend on both the amplitude and the duration of the applied modulations, and are found to be dramatically broadened by thermal dephasing effect. The resonance centers shift due to both many-body effect and finite temperature effect. Our theory is consistent with recent experiment (S. T. Thompson, E. Hodby, and C. E. Wieman, Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 190404 (2005)). Our model predicts a 1/3 ceiling for the molecular production yield in uncondensed ultracold atomic clouds for a long coupling time, while for the condensed atoms the optimal conversion yield could be beyond the limit.

The role of particle interactions in a many-body model of Feshbach molecular formation in bosonic systems

In this paper, we investigate the atom-molecule conversion dynamics of a generalized many-body model that includes the atom-atom, atom-molecule, and molecule-molecule interactions, emphasizing the efficiency of the Feshbach molecular formation. We show that the picture of two-body molecular production depicted by the Landau-Zener model is significantly altered: The energy levels are dramatically distorted and the conversion efficiency is suppressed by the particle interactions. According to the rule of constant action and with the help of phase-space analysis, we derive an analytical expression for the conversion efficiency in the adiabatic limit. It shows a ceiling for the conversion efficiency when the interaction strength is larger than a critical value. We further derive a closed equation for the conversion efficiency with the stationary phase approximation. In the sudden limit, the conversion efficiency is twice that predicted by the two-body Landau-Zener formula. Our analytical formula has been confirmed by numerical calculations.

Rosen-Zener interferometry with Ultracold Atoms

We propose a time-domain "interferometer" based on ultracold Bose atoms loaded on a double well potential. By the adiabatic Rosen-Zener process, the barrier between two wells is ramped down slowly, held for a while, then ramped back. Starting with a coherent state of double well system, the final occupations on one well show interesting interference fringes in the time-domain. The fringe pattern is sensitive to the initial state, the interatomic interaction, and the external forces such as gravity which can change the shape of the double well. In this sense, this interferometric scheme has the potentials for precision measurements with ultracold atoms. The underlying mechanism is revealed and possible applications are discussed.

Role of Particle Interactions in the Feshbach Conversion of Fermion Atoms to Bosonic Molecules

We investigate the Feshbach conversion of fermion atomic pairs to condensed boson molecules with a microscopic model that accounts the repulsive interactions among all the particles involved. We find that the conversion efficiency is enhanced by the interaction between boson molecules while suppressed by the interactions between fermion atoms and between atom and molecule. In certain cases, the combined effect of these interactions leads to a ceiling of less than 100% on the conversion efficiency even in the adiabatic limit. Our model predicts a non-monotonic dependence of the efficiency on mean atomic density. Our theory agrees well with recent experiments on $^6$Li and $^{40}$K.

Rosen-Zener Transition in a Nonlinear Two-Level System

We study Rosen-Zener transition (RZT) in a nonlinear two-level system in which the level energies depend on the occupation of the levels, representing a mean-field type of interaction between the particles. We find that the nonlinearity could affect the quantum transition dramatically. At certain nonlinearity the 100% population transfer between two levels is observed and found to be robust over a very wide range of external parameters. On the other hand, the quantum transition could be completely blocked by a strong nonlinearity. In the sudden and adiabatic limits we have derived analytical expressions for the transition probability. Numerical explorations are made for a wide range of parameters of the general case. Possible applications of our theory to Bose-Einstern Condensates (BECs) are discussed.

Adiabatic Fidelity for Atom-Molecule Conversion in a Nonlinear Three-Level Λ-system

We investigate the dynamics of the population transfer for atom-molecule three-level $Λ$-system on stimulated Raman adiabatic passage(STIRAP). We find that the adiabatic fidelity for the coherent population trapping(CPT) state or dark state, as the function of the adiabatic parameter, approaches to unit in a power law. The power exponent however is much less than the prediction of linear adiabatic theorem. We further discuss how to achieve higher adiabatic fidelity for the dark state through optimizing the external parameters of STIRAP. Our discussions are helpful to gain higher atom-molecule conversion yield in practical experiments.
