DeepInteraction: 3D Object Detection via Modality Interaction

Existing top-performance 3D object detectors typically rely on the multi-modal fusion strategy. This design is however fundamentally restricted due to overlooking the modality-specific useful information and finally hampering the model performance. To address this limitation, in this work we introduce a novel modality interaction strategy where individual per-modality representations are learned and maintained throughout for enabling their unique characteristics to be exploited during object detection. To realize this proposed strategy, we design a DeepInteraction architecture characterized by a multi-modal representational interaction encoder and a multi-modal predictive interaction decoder. Experiments on the large-scale nuScenes dataset show that our proposed method surpasses all prior arts often by a large margin. Crucially, our method is ranked at the first position at the highly competitive nuScenes object detection leaderboard.

Swimming of the midge larva: principles and tricks of locomotion at intermediate Reynolds number

At the millimeter scale and in the intermediate Reynolds number (Re) regime, the midge and mosquito larvae can reach swimming speeds of more than one body length per cycle performing a "figure-of-8" gait, in which their elongated bodies periodically bend nearly into circles and then fully unfold. To elucidate the propulsion mechanism of this cycle of motion, we conducted a 3D numerical study which investigates the hydrodynamics of undergoing the prescribed kinematics. Novel propulsion mechanisms, such as modulating the body deformation rate to dynamically increase the maximum net propulsion force, using asymmetric kinematics to generate torque and the appropriate rotation, and controlling the radius of the curled body to manipulate the moment of inertia. The figure-of-8 gait is found to achieve propulsion at a wide range of Re, but is most effective at intermediate Re. The results were further validated experimentally, via the development of a soft millimeter-sized robot that can reach comparable speeds using the figure-of-8 gait.

Accelerating Score-based Generative Models with Preconditioned Diffusion Sampling

Score-based generative models (SGMs) have recently emerged as a promising class of generative models. However, a fundamental limitation is that their inference is very slow due to a need for many (e.g., 2000) iterations of sequential computations. An intuitive acceleration method is to reduce the sampling iterations which however causes severe performance degradation. We investigate this problem by viewing the diffusion sampling process as a Metropolis adjusted Langevin algorithm, which helps reveal the underlying cause to be ill-conditioned curvature. Under this insight, we propose a model-agnostic preconditioned diffusion sampling (PDS) method that leverages matrix preconditioning to alleviate the aforementioned problem. Crucially, PDS is proven theoretically to converge to the original target distribution of a SGM, no need for retraining. Extensive experiments on three image datasets with a variety of resolutions and diversity validate that PDS consistently accelerates off-the-shelf SGMs whilst maintaining the synthesis quality. In particular, PDS can accelerate by up to 29x on more challenging high resolution (1024x1024) image generation.

MSV Challenge 2022: NPU-HC Speaker Verification System for Low-resource Indian Languages

This report describes the NPU-HC speaker verification system submitted to the O-COCOSDA Multi-lingual Speaker Verification (MSV) Challenge 2022, which focuses on developing speaker verification systems for low-resource Asian languages. We participate in the I-MSV track, which aims to develop speaker verification systems for various Indian languages. In this challenge, we first explore different neural network frameworks for low-resource speaker verification. Then we leverage vanilla fine-tuning and weight transfer fine-tuning to transfer the out-domain pre-trained models to the in-domain Indian dataset. Specifically, the weight transfer fine-tuning aims to constrain the distance of the weights between the pre-trained model and the fine-tuned model, which takes advantage of the previously acquired discriminative ability from the large-scale out-domain datasets and avoids catastrophic forgetting and overfitting at the same time. Finally, score fusion is adopted to further improve performance. Together with the above contributions, we obtain 0.223% EER on the public evaluation set, ranking 2nd place on the leaderboard. On the private evaluation set, the EER of our submitted system is 2.123% and 0.630% for the constrained and unconstrained sub-tasks of the I-MSV track, leading to the 1st and 3rd place in the ranking, respectively.

Automated Generating Natural Language Requirements based on Domain Ontology

Software requirements specification is undoubtedly critical for the whole software life-cycle. Nowadays, writing software requirements specifications primarily depends on human work. Although massive studies have been proposed to fasten the process via proposing advanced elicitation and analysis techniques, it is still a time-consuming and error-prone task that needs to take domain knowledge and business information into consideration. In this paper, we propose an approach, named ReqGen, which can provide recommendations by automatically generating natural language requirements specifications based on certain given keywords. Specifically, ReqGen consists of three critical steps. First, keywords-oriented knowledge is selected from domain ontology and is injected to the basic Unified pre-trained Language Model (UniLM) for domain fine-tuning. Second, a copy mechanism is integrated to ensure the occurrence of keywords in the generated statements. Finally, a requirement syntax constrained decoding is designed to close the semantic and syntax distance between the candidate and reference specifications. Experiments on two public datasets from different groups and domains show that ReqGen outperforms six popular natural language generation approaches with respect to the hard constraint of keywords(phrases) inclusion, BLEU, ROUGE and syntax compliance. We believe that ReqGen can promote the efficiency and intelligence of specifying software requirements.

Panoramic Video Salient Object Detection with Ambisonic Audio Guidance

Video salient object detection (VSOD), as a fundamental computer vision problem, has been extensively discussed in the last decade. However, all existing works focus on addressing the VSOD problem in 2D scenarios. With the rapid development of VR devices, panoramic videos have been a promising alternative to 2D videos to provide immersive feelings of the real world. In this paper, we aim to tackle the video salient object detection problem for panoramic videos, with their corresponding ambisonic audios. A multimodal fusion module equipped with two pseudo-siamese audio-visual context fusion (ACF) blocks is proposed to effectively conduct audio-visual interaction. The ACF block equipped with spherical positional encoding enables the fusion in the 3D context to capture the spatial correspondence between pixels and sound sources from the equirectangular frames and ambisonic audios. Experimental results verify the effectiveness of our proposed components and demonstrate that our method achieves state-of-the-art performance on the ASOD60K dataset.

Robust Time Series Chain Discovery with Incremental Nearest Neighbors

Time series motif discovery has been a fundamental task to identify meaningful repeated patterns in time series. Recently, time series chains were introduced as an expansion of time series motifs to identify the continuous evolving patterns in time series data. Informally, a time series chain (TSC) is a temporally ordered set of time series subsequences, in which every subsequence is similar to the one that precedes it, but the last and the first can be arbitrarily dissimilar. TSCs are shown to be able to reveal latent continuous evolving trends in the time series, and identify precursors of unusual events in complex systems. Despite its promising interpretability, unfortunately, we have observed that existing TSC definitions lack the ability to accurately cover the evolving part of a time series: the discovered chains can be easily cut by noise and can include non-evolving patterns, making them impractical in real-world applications. Inspired by a recent work that tracks how the nearest neighbor of a time series subsequence changes over time, we introduce a new TSC definition which is much more robust to noise in the data, in the sense that they can better locate the evolving patterns while excluding the non-evolving ones. We further propose two new quality metrics to rank the discovered chains. With extensive empirical evaluations, we demonstrate that the proposed TSC definition is significantly more robust to noise than the state of the art, and the top ranked chains discovered can reveal meaningful regularities in a variety of real world datasets.

First extraction of the proton mass radius and scattering length $\left|α_{ρ^0 p}\right| $ from $ρ^0$ photoproduction

As it involves the lightest physical states excited from the vacuum by the vector quark current, near-threshold $ρ^0$ photoproduction is considered a possible way to research the proton radius and the absolute value of the scattering lengths of the $ρ^0$--proton interaction. In this work, under the assumption of a scalar form factor of dipole form, the value of the proton mass radius is calculated as $0.85\pm 0.06 \text{ fm }$ by fitting the differential cross section of the $γp \rightarrow ρ^0 p$ reaction at near-threshold energy. For light vector meson photoproduction, because the exchange of a scalar quark--antiquark pair is not suppressed and should dominate the scalar gluon exchange, the radius we extract from $ρ^0$ photoproduction is likely to represent the quark radius of the proton. This fact may explain why the value obtained in this work is very near the proton charge radius. Moreover, the absolute value of the $ρ^0$--proton scattering length $|α_{ρ^0 p}|= 0.31 \pm 0.06 \text{ fm}$ is obtained for the first time within the vector meson dominance model. This result disobeys the rule that the absolute value of the vector meson and proton scattering length $|α_{V p}|$ increases with the meson's mass, which can be attributed to treating the $ρ^0$ meson as a point in the analysis. These results provide useful theoretical information for an in-depth understanding of proton structure and the proton--vector meson interaction.

TSUP Speaker Diarization System for Conversational Short-phrase Speaker Diarization Challenge

This paper describes the TSUP team's submission to the ISCSLP 2022 conversational short-phrase speaker diarization (CSSD) challenge which particularly focuses on short-phrase conversations with a new evaluation metric called conversational diarization error rate (CDER). In this challenge, we explore three kinds of typical speaker diarization systems, which are spectral clustering(SC) based diarization, target-speaker voice activity detection(TS-VAD) and end-to-end neural diarization(EEND) respectively. Our major findings are summarized as follows. First, the SC approach is more favored over the other two approaches under the new CDER metric. Second, tuning on hyperparameters is essential to CDER for all three types of speaker diarization systems. Specifically, CDER becomes smaller when the length of sub-segments setting longer. Finally, multi-system fusion through DOVER-LAP will worsen the CDER metric on the challenge data. Our submitted SC system eventually ranks the third place in the challenge.

Generative Model Watermarking Based on Human Visual System

Intellectual property protection of deep neural networks is receiving attention from more and more researchers, and the latest research applies model watermarking to generative models for image processing. However, the existing watermarking methods designed for generative models do not take into account the effects of different channels of sample images on watermarking. As a result, the watermarking performance is still limited. To tackle this problem, in this paper, we first analyze the effects of embedding watermark information on different channels. Then, based on the characteristics of human visual system (HVS), we introduce two HVS-based generative model watermarking methods, which are realized in RGB color space and YUV color space respectively. In RGB color space, the watermark is embedded into the R and B channels based on the fact that HVS is more sensitive to G channel. In YUV color space, the watermark is embedded into the DCT domain of U and V channels based on the fact that HVS is more sensitive to brightness changes. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed work, which improves the fidelity of the model to be protected and has good universality compared with previous methods.

Lattice-aligned gallium oxynitride nanolayer for GaN surface enhancement and function extension

Gallium nitride (GaN), as a promising alternative semiconductor to silicon, is of well-established use in photoelectronic and electronic technology. However, the vulnerable GaN surface has been a critical restriction that hinders the development of GaN-based devices, especially regarding device stability and reliability. Here, we overcome this challenge by converting the GaN surface into a gallium oxynitride (GaON) epitaxial nanolayer through an in-situ two-step "oxidation-reconfiguration" process. The oxygen plasma treatment overcomes the chemical inertness of the GaN surface, and the sequential thermal annealing manipulates the kinetic-thermodynamic reaction pathways to create a metastable GaON nanolayer with wurtzite lattice. This GaN-derived GaON nanolayer is a tailored structure for surface reinforcement and possesses several advantages, including wide bandgap, high thermodynamic stability, and large valence band offset with GaN substrate. These enhanced physical properties can be further leveraged to enable GaN-based applications in new scenarios, such as complementary logic integrated circuits, photoelectrochemical water splitting, and ultraviolet photoelectric conversion, making GaON a versatile functionality extender.

NWPU-ASLP System for the VoicePrivacy 2022 Challenge

This paper presents the NWPU-ASLP speaker anonymization system for VoicePrivacy 2022 Challenge. Our submission does not involve additional Automatic Speaker Verification (ASV) model or x-vector pool. Our system consists of four modules, including feature extractor, acoustic model, anonymization module, and neural vocoder. First, the feature extractor extracts the Phonetic Posteriorgram (PPG) and pitch from the input speech signal. Then, we reserve a pseudo speaker ID from a speaker look-up table (LUT), which is subsequently fed into a speaker encoder to generate the pseudo speaker embedding that is not corresponding to any real speaker. To ensure the pseudo speaker is distinguishable, we further average the randomly selected speaker embedding and weighted concatenate it with the pseudo speaker embedding to generate the anonymized speaker embedding. Finally, the acoustic model outputs the anonymized mel-spectrogram from the anonymized speaker embedding and a modified version of HifiGAN transforms the mel-spectrogram into the anonymized speech waveform. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed anonymization system.

Spatial-temporal Transformers for EEG Emotion Recognition

Electroencephalography (EEG) is a popular and effective tool for emotion recognition. However, the propagation mechanisms of EEG in the human brain and its intrinsic correlation with emotions are still obscure to researchers. This work proposes four variant transformer frameworks~(spatial attention, temporal attention, sequential spatial-temporal attention and simultaneous spatial-temporal attention) for EEG emotion recognition to explore the relationship between emotion and spatial-temporal EEG features. Specifically, spatial attention and temporal attention are to learn the topological structure information and time-varying EEG characteristics for emotion recognition respectively. Sequential spatial-temporal attention does the spatial attention within a one-second segment and temporal attention within one sample sequentially to explore the influence degree of emotional stimulation on EEG signals of diverse EEG electrodes in the same temporal segment. The simultaneous spatial-temporal attention, whose spatial and temporal attention are performed simultaneously, is used to model the relationship between different spatial features in different time segments. The experimental results demonstrate that simultaneous spatial-temporal attention leads to the best emotion recognition accuracy among the design choices, indicating modeling the correlation of spatial and temporal features of EEG signals is significant to emotion recognition.

Backend Ensemble for Speaker Verification and Spoofing Countermeasure

This paper describes the NPU system submitted to Spoofing Aware Speaker Verification Challenge 2022. We particularly focus on the \textit{backend ensemble} for speaker verification and spoofing countermeasure from three aspects. Firstly, besides simple concatenation, we propose circulant matrix transformation and stacking for speaker embeddings and countermeasure embeddings. With the stacking operation of newly-defined circulant embeddings, we almost explore all the possible interactions between speaker embeddings and countermeasure embeddings. Secondly, we attempt different convolution neural networks to selectively fuse the embeddings' salient regions into channels with convolution kernels. Finally, we design parallel attention in 1D convolution neural networks to learn the global correlation in channel dimensions as well as to learn the important parts in feature dimensions. Meanwhile, we embed squeeze-and-excitation attention in 2D convolutional neural networks to learn the global dependence among speaker embeddings and countermeasure embeddings. Experimental results demonstrate that all the above methods are effective. After fusion of four well-trained models enhanced by the mentioned methods, the best SASV-EER, SPF-EER and SV-EER we achieve are 0.559\%, 0.354\% and 0.857\% on the evaluation set respectively. Together with the above contributions, our submission system achieves the fifth place in this challenge.

Extraction-based Deep Learning Reconstruction of Interior Tomography

Interior tomography is a typical strategy for radiation dose reduction in computed tomography, where only a certain region-of-interest (ROI) is scanned. However, given the truncated projection data, ROI reconstruction by conventional analytical algorithms may suffer from severe cupping artifacts. In this paper, we proposed a new extraction-based deep learning method for the reconstruction of interior tomography. Our approach works in dual domains where a sinogram-domain network (SDNet) estimates the contribution of the exterior region to the truncated projection and an image-domain network (IDNet) further mitigates artifacts. Unlike the previous extrapolation-based methods, SDNet is intended to obtain a complete ROI-only sinogram via extraction instead of a fully non-truncated sinogram for both the ROI and exterior regions. Our experiments validated the proposed method and the results indicate that the proposed method can disclose more reliable structures. It achieved better image quality with better generalization performance than extrapolation-based methods.

Dynamic Graph Message Passing Networks for Visual Recognition

Modelling long-range dependencies is critical for scene understanding tasks in computer vision. Although convolution neural networks (CNNs) have excelled in many vision tasks, they are still limited in capturing long-range structured relationships as they typically consist of layers of local kernels. A fully-connected graph, such as the self-attention operation in Transformers, is beneficial for such modelling, however, its computational overhead is prohibitive. In this paper, we propose a dynamic graph message passing network, that significantly reduces the computational complexity compared to related works modelling a fully-connected graph. This is achieved by adaptively sampling nodes in the graph, conditioned on the input, for message passing. Based on the sampled nodes, we dynamically predict node-dependent filter weights and the affinity matrix for propagating information between them. This formulation allows us to design a self-attention module, and more importantly a new Transformer-based backbone network, that we use for both image classification pretraining, and for addressing various downstream tasks (object detection, instance and semantic segmentation). Using this model, we show significant improvements with respect to strong, state-of-the-art baselines on four different tasks. Our approach also outperforms fully-connected graphs while using substantially fewer floating-point operations and parameters. Code and models will be made publicly available at https://github.com/fudan-zvg/DGMN2

Model-Guided Multi-Contrast Deep Unfolding Network for MRI Super-resolution Reconstruction

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with high resolution (HR) provides more detailed information for accurate diagnosis and quantitative image analysis. Despite the significant advances, most existing super-resolution (SR) reconstruction network for medical images has two flaws: 1) All of them are designed in a black-box principle, thus lacking sufficient interpretability and further limiting their practical applications. Interpretable neural network models are of significant interest since they enhance the trustworthiness required in clinical practice when dealing with medical images. 2) most existing SR reconstruction approaches only use a single contrast or use a simple multi-contrast fusion mechanism, neglecting the complex relationships between different contrasts that are critical for SR improvement. To deal with these issues, in this paper, a novel Model-Guided interpretable Deep Unfolding Network (MGDUN) for medical image SR reconstruction is proposed. The Model-Guided image SR reconstruction approach solves manually designed objective functions to reconstruct HR MRI. We show how to unfold an iterative MGDUN algorithm into a novel model-guided deep unfolding network by taking the MRI observation matrix and explicit multi-contrast relationship matrix into account during the end-to-end optimization. Extensive experiments on the multi-contrast IXI dataset and BraTs 2019 dataset demonstrate the superiority of our proposed model.
