Tight lower bound for the spectral radius of connected graphs with given matching number

Let $\mathscr{G}_{n,k}$ denote the family of all connected graphs of order $n$ with matching number $k$. Liu, Lou, and Trevisan~(Linear Algebra Appl., 2026) posed the following problem: Determine the spectrally minimal graphs in $\mathscr{G}_{n,k}$. In this paper we prove that for every graph $G \in \mathscr{G}_{n,k}$, $ \rho(G) \ge \sqrt{\frac{n + 2k - 3}{k}}, $ and we completely characterize the extremal graphs when $k \mid (n-3)$. As applications, we establish $\rho(G) + k \ge 3\sqrt[3]{n/4}$ for $k \ge 2$, settling the asymptotic order of $\rho + k$ as $\Theta(n^{1/3})$ -- strictly smaller than the $\Theta(\sqrt{n})$ order suggested by the disproved Aouchiche--Hansen conjecture.

Reactive Planning based Control for Mobile Robots in Obstacle-Cluttered Environments

This paper addresses the motion control problem for mobile robots in obstacle-cluttered environments. The mobile robot has partial environment information only, and aims to move from an initial position to a target position without collisions. For this purpose, a reactive planning based control strategy (RPCS) is proposed. First, the initial and target positions are connected as a reference trajectory. Then, a reactive planning strategy (RPS) is developed to ensure the collision avoidance by modifying the reference trajectory locally based on the partial environment information. Next, an adaptive tracking control strategy (ATCS) is proposed to track the reference trajectory with potentially local modifications via the discretization techniques. Finally, the RPS and ATCS are combined to establish the RPCS, whose efficacy and advantages are illustrated by numerical examples.

MUVR: A Multi-Modal Untrimmed Video Retrieval Benchmark with Multi-Level Visual Correspondence

We propose the Multi-modal Untrimmed Video Retrieval task, along with a new benchmark (MUVR) to advance video retrieval for long-video platforms. MUVR aims to retrieve untrimmed videos containing relevant segments using multi-modal queries. It has the following features: 1) Practical retrieval paradigm: MUVR supports video-centric multi-modal queries, expressing fine-grained retrieval needs through long text descriptions, video tag prompts, and mask prompts. It adopts a one-to-many retrieval paradigm and focuses on untrimmed videos, tailored for long-video platform applications. 2) Multi-level visual correspondence: To cover common video categories (e.g., news, travel, dance) and precisely define retrieval matching criteria, we construct multi-level visual correspondence based on core video content (e.g., news events, travel locations, dance moves) which users are interested in and want to retrieve. It covers six levels: copy, event, scene, instance, action, and others. 3) Comprehensive evaluation criteria: We develop 3 versions of MUVR (i.e., Base, Filter, QA). MUVR-Base/Filter evaluates retrieval models, while MUVR-QA assesses MLLMs in a question-answering format. We also propose a Reranking Score to evaluate the reranking ability of MLLMs. MUVR consists of 53K untrimmed videos from the video platform Bilibili, with 1,050 multi-modal queries and 84K matches. Extensive evaluations of 3 state-of-the-art video retrieval models, 6 image-based VLMs, and 10 MLLMs are conducted. MUVR reveals the limitations of retrieval methods in processing untrimmed videos and multi-modal queries, as well as MLLMs in multi-video understanding and reranking. Our code and benchmark is available at https://github.com/debby-0527/MUVR.

Holographic interference surface: A proof of concept based on the principle of interferometry

Revolutionizing communication architectures to achieve a balance between enhanced performance and improved efficiency is becoming increasingly critical for wireless communications as the era of ultra-large-scale arrays approaches. In traditional communication architectures, radio frequency (RF) signals are typically converted to baseband for subsequent processing through operations such as filtering, analog-to-digital conversion and down-conversion, all of which depend on expensive and power-intensive RF chains. The increased hardware complexity and escalated power consumption resulting from this dependency significantly limit the practical deployment of ultra-large-scale arrays. To address these limitations, we propose a holographic communication system based on the principle of interferometry, designated as holographic interference surfaces (HIS). Utilizing the interference effect of electromagnetic waves, HIS estimates the channel state information (CSI) by dealing solely with power information, which enables the replacement of RF chains with power sensors and completes the signal processing in radio frequency. As proof-of-concept demonstrations, we implemented a prototype system based on principles of holographic interference. Experimental results align well with theoretical predictions, confirming the practical viability and effectiveness of the proposed HIS. This work provides a new paradigm for building a more cost-effective wireless communication architecture.

DISTRIBUTEDANN: Efficient Scaling of a Single DISKANN Graph Across Thousands of Computers

We present DISTRIBUTEDANN, a distributed vector search service that makes it possible to search over a single 50 billion vector graph index spread across over a thousand machines that offers 26ms median query latency and processes over 100,000 queries per second. This is 6x more efficient than existing partitioning and routing strategies that route the vector query to a subset of partitions in a scale out vector search system. DISTRIBUTEDANN is built using two well-understood components: a distributed key-value store and an in-memory ANN index. DISTRIBUTEDANN has replaced conventional scale-out architectures for serving the Bing search engine, and we share our experience from making this transition.

Wellposedness and averaging principle for conditional distribution dependent SDEs driven by standard Brownian motions and fractional Brownian motions

In this paper, we study a conditional distribution dependent stochastic differential equations driven by standard Brownian motion and fractional Brownian motion with Hurst exponent $H>\frac{1}{2}$ simultaneously. First, the existence and uniqueness of the equation is established by the fixed point theorem. Then, we show that the solutions of conditional distribution dependent stochastic differential equations can be approximated by the solutions of the associated averaged distribution dependent stochastic differential equations.

A classification of two-distance-transitive Cayley graphs over the generalized quaternion groups

A non-complete graph is \emph{$2$-distance-transitive} if, for $i=1,2$ and for any two vertex pairs $(u_1,v_1)$ and $(u_2,v_2)$ with the same distance $i$ in the graph, there exists an element of the graph automorphism group that maps $(u_1,v_1)$ to $(u_2,v_2)$. This is a generalization concept of the classical well-known distance-transitive graphs. In this paper, we completely determine the family of $2$-distance-transitive Cayley graphs over the generalized quaternion groups.

Recommendation System in Advertising and Streaming Media: Unsupervised Data Enhancement Sequence Suggestions

Sequential recommendation is an extensively explored approach to capturing users' evolving preferences based on past interactions, aimed at predicting their next likely choice. Despite significant advancements in this domain, including methods based on RNNs and self-attention, challenges like limited supervised signals and noisy data caused by unintentional clicks persist. To address these challenges, some studies have incorporated unsupervised learning by leveraging local item contexts within individual sequences. However, these methods often overlook the intricate associations between items across multiple sequences and are susceptible to noise in item co-occurrence patterns. In this context, we introduce a novel framework, Global Unsupervised Data-Augmentation (UDA4SR), which adopts a graph contrastive learning perspective to generate more robust item embeddings for sequential recommendation. Our approach begins by integrating Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) for data augmentation, which serves as the first step to enhance the diversity and richness of the training data. Then, we build a Global Item Relationship Graph (GIG) based on all user interaction sequences. Subsequently, we employ graph contrastive learning on the refined graph to enhance item embeddings by capturing complex global associations. To model users' dynamic and diverse interests more effectively, we enhance the CapsNet module with a novel target-attention mechanism. Extensive experiments show that UDA4SR significantly outperforms state-of-the-art approaches.

In this article, we study the McKean-Vlasov neutral stochastic differential delay equations driven by fractional Brownian motion with super-linearly growing coefficients, where the Hurst exponent $H\in(1/2,1)$. The existence and uniqueness of the exact solution were shown by the Picard iteration. Besides, we propose a tamed theta Euler-Maruyama scheme for this equation, analyzed the moment boundness and propagation of chaos etc. Moreover, the convergence rate of the numerical scheme is established.

Methodological Explainability Evaluation of an Interpretable Deep Learning Model for Post-Hepatectomy Liver Failure Prediction Incorporating Counterfactual Explanations and Layerwise Relevance Propagation: A Prospective In Silico Trial

Artificial intelligence (AI)-based decision support systems have demonstrated value in predicting post-hepatectomy liver failure (PHLF) in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, they often lack transparency, and the impact of model explanations on clinicians' decisions has not been thoroughly evaluated. Building on prior research, we developed a variational autoencoder-multilayer perceptron (VAE-MLP) model for preoperative PHLF prediction. This model integrated counterfactuals and layerwise relevance propagation (LRP) to provide insights into its decision-making mechanism. Additionally, we proposed a methodological framework for evaluating the explainability of AI systems. This framework includes qualitative and quantitative assessments of explanations against recognized biomarkers, usability evaluations, and an in silico clinical trial. Our evaluations demonstrated that the model's explanation correlated with established biomarkers and exhibited high usability at both the case and system levels. Furthermore, results from the three-track in silico clinical trial showed that clinicians' prediction accuracy and confidence increased when AI explanations were provided.

Convergence rate of nonlinear delayed neutral McKean-Vlasov SDEs driven by fractional Brownian motions

In this paper, our main aim is to investigate the strong convergence for a neutral McKean-Vlasov stochastic differential equation with super-linear delay driven by fractional Brownian motion with Hurst exponent $H\in(1/2, 1)$. After giving uniqueness and existence for the exact solution, we analyze the properties including boundedness of moment and propagation of chaos. Besides, we give the Euler-Maruyama (EM) scheme and show that the numerical solution converges strongly to the exact solution. Furthermore, a corresponding numerical example is given to illustrate the theory.

Motion Control of Two Mobile Robots under Allowable Collisions

This letter investigates the motion control problem of two mobile robots under allowable collisions. Here, the allowable collisions mean that the collisions do not damage the mobile robots. The occurrence of the collisions is discussed and the effects of the collisions on the mobile robots are analyzed to develop a hybrid model of each mobile robot under allowable collisions. Based on the effects of the collisions, we show the necessity of redesigning the motion control strategy for mobile robots. Furthermore, impulsive control techniques are applied to redesign the motion control strategy to guarantee the task accomplishment for each mobile robot. Finally, an example is used to illustrate the redesigned motion control strategy.

Multi-user passive beamforming in RIS-aided communications and experimental validations

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is a promising technology for future wireless communications due to its capability of optimizing the propagation environments. Nevertheless, in literature, there are few prototypes serving multiple users. In this paper, we propose a whole flow of channel estimation and beamforming design for RIS, and set up an RIS-aided multi-user system for experimental validations. Specifically, we combine a channel sparsification step with generalized approximate message passing (GAMP) algorithm, and propose to generate the measurement matrix as Rademacher distribution to obtain the channel state information (CSI). To generate the reflection coefficients with the aim of maximizing the spectral efficiency, we propose a quadratic transform-based low-rank multi-user beamforming (QTLM) algorithm. Our proposed algorithms exploit the sparsity and low-rank properties of the channel, which has the advantages of light calculation and fast convergence. Based on the universal software radio peripheral devices, we built a complete testbed working at 5.8GHz and implemented all the proposed algorithms to verify the possibility of RIS assisting multi-user systems. Experimental results show that the system has obtained an average spectral efficiency increase of 13.48bps/Hz, with respective received power gains of 26.6dB and 17.5dB for two users, compared with the case when RIS is powered-off.

Dense Voxel 3D Reconstruction Using a Monocular Event Camera

Event cameras are sensors inspired by biological systems that specialize in capturing changes in brightness. These emerging cameras offer many advantages over conventional frame-based cameras, including high dynamic range, high frame rates, and extremely low power consumption. Due to these advantages, event cameras have increasingly been adapted in various fields, such as frame interpolation, semantic segmentation, odometry, and SLAM. However, their application in 3D reconstruction for VR applications is underexplored. Previous methods in this field mainly focused on 3D reconstruction through depth map estimation. Methods that produce dense 3D reconstruction generally require multiple cameras, while methods that utilize a single event camera can only produce a semi-dense result. Other single-camera methods that can produce dense 3D reconstruction rely on creating a pipeline that either incorporates the aforementioned methods or other existing Structure from Motion (SfM) or Multi-view Stereo (MVS) methods. In this paper, we propose a novel approach for solving dense 3D reconstruction using only a single event camera. To the best of our knowledge, our work is the first attempt in this regard. Our preliminary results demonstrate that the proposed method can produce visually distinguishable dense 3D reconstructions directly without requiring pipelines like those used by existing methods. Additionally, we have created a synthetic dataset with $39,739$ object scans using an event camera simulator. This dataset will help accelerate other relevant research in this field.

Prototyping and real-world field trials of RIS-aided wireless communications

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is a promising technology that has the potential to change the way we interact with the wireless propagating environment. In this paper, we design and fabricate an RIS system that can be used in the fifth generation (5G) mobile communication networks. We also propose a practical two-step spatial-oversampling codebook algorithm for the beamforming of RIS, which is based on the spatial structure of the wireless channel. This algorithm has much lower complexity compared to the two-dimensional full-space searching-based codebook, yet with only negligible performance loss. Then, a series of experiments are conducted with the fabricated RIS systems, covering the office, corridor, and outdoor environments, in order to verified the effectiveness of RIS in both laboratory and current 5G commercial networks. In the office and corridor scenarios, the 5.8 GHz RIS provided a 10-20 dB power gain at the receiver. In the outdoor test, over 35 dB power gain was observed with RIS compared to the non-deployment case. However, in commercial 5G networks, the 2.6 GHz RIS improved indoor signal strength by only 4-7 dB. The experimental results indicate that RIS achieves higher power gain when transceivers are equipped with directional antennas instead of omni-directional antennas.

RIS with insufficient phase shifting capability: Modeling, beamforming, and experimental validations

Most research works on reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) rely on idealized models of the reflection coefficients, i.e., uniform reflection amplitude for any phase and sufficient phase shifting capability. In practice however, such models are oversimplified. This paper introduces a realistic reflection coefficient model for RIS based on measurements. The reflection coefficients are modeled as discrete complex values that have non-uniform amplitudes and suffer from insufficient phase shift capability. We then propose a group-based query algorithm that takes the imperfect coefficients into consideration while calculating the reflection coefficients. We analyze the performance of the proposed algorithm, and derive the closed-form expressions to characterize the received power of an RIS-aided wireless communication system. The performance gains of the proposed algorithm are confirmed in simulations. Furthermore, we validate the proposed theoretical results by experiments with our fabricated RIS prototype systems. The simulation and measurement results match well with the theoretical analysis.

RIS-aided Wireless Communications: Can RIS Beat Metal Plate?

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS) has recently been regarded as a paradigm-shifting technology beyond 5G, for its flexibility on smartly adjusting the response to the impinging electromagnetic (EM) waves. Usually, RIS can be implemented by properly reconfiguring the adjustable parameters of each RIS unit to align the signal phase on the receiver side. And it is believed that the phase alignment can be also mechanically achieved by a metal plate with the same physical size. However, we found in the prototype experiments that, a well-rotated metal plate can only approximately perform as well as RIS under limited conditions, although its scattering efficiency is relatively higher. When it comes to the case of spherical wave impinging, RIS outperforms the metal plate even beyond the receiving near-field regions. We analyze this phenomenon with wave optics theory and propose explicit scattering models for both the metal plate and RIS in general scenarios. Finally, the models are validated by simulations and field measurements.

Region-enhanced Deep Graph Convolutional Networks for Rumor Detection

Social media has been rapidly developing in the public sphere due to its ease of spreading new information, which leads to the circulation of rumors. However, detecting rumors from such a massive amount of information is becoming an increasingly arduous challenge. Previous work generally obtained valuable features from propagation information. It should be noted that most methods only target the propagation structure while ignoring the rumor transmission pattern. This limited focus severely restricts the collection of spread data. To solve this problem, the authors of the present study are motivated to explore the regionalized propagation patterns of rumors. Specifically, a novel region-enhanced deep graph convolutional network (RDGCN) that enhances the propagation features of rumors by learning regionalized propagation patterns and trains to learn the propagation patterns by unsupervised learning is proposed. In addition, a source-enhanced residual graph convolution layer (SRGCL) is designed to improve the graph neural network (GNN) oversmoothness and increase the depth limit of the rumor detection methods-based GNN. Experiments on Twitter15 and Twitter16 show that the proposed model performs better than the baseline approach on rumor detection and early rumor detection.
