TSOM: Small Object Motion Detection Neural Network Inspired by Avian Visual Circuit

Detecting small moving objects in complex backgrounds from an overhead perspective is a highly challenging task for machine vision systems. As an inspiration from nature, the avian visual system is capable of processing motion information in various complex aerial scenes, and its Retina-OT-Rt visual circuit is highly sensitive to capturing the motion information of small objects from high altitudes. However, more needs to be done on small object motion detection algorithms based on the avian visual system. In this paper, we conducted mathematical modeling based on extensive studies of the biological mechanisms of the Retina-OT-Rt visual circuit. Based on this, we proposed a novel tectum small object motion detection neural network (TSOM). The neural network includes the retina, SGC dendritic, SGC Soma, and Rt layers, each layer corresponding to neurons in the visual pathway. The Retina layer is responsible for accurately projecting input content, the SGC dendritic layer perceives and encodes spatial-temporal information, the SGC Soma layer computes complex motion information and extracts small objects, and the Rt layer integrates and decodes motion information from multiple directions to determine the position of small objects. Extensive experiments on pigeon neurophysiological experiments and image sequence data showed that the TSOM is biologically interpretable and effective in extracting reliable small object motion features from complex high-altitude backgrounds.

Revealing the EuCd_{2}As_{2} Semiconducting Band Gap via n-type La-Doping

EuCd_{2}As_{2} has attracted considerable interest as one of the few magnetic Weyl semimetal candidate materials, although recently there have been emerging reports that claim it to have a semiconducting electronic structure. To resolve this debate, we established the growth of n-type EuCd_{2}As_{2} crystals, to directly visualize the nature of the conduction band using angle resolve photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). We show that La-doping leads to n-type transport signatures in both the thermopower and Hall effect measurements, in crystals with doping levels at 2 - 6 x 10^{17} e^{-} cm^{-3}. Both p-type and n-type doped samples exhibit antiferromagnetic ordering at 9 K. ARPES experiments at 6 K clearly show the presence of the conduction band minimum at 0.8 eV above the valence band maximum, which is further corroborated by the observation of a 0.71 - 0.72 eV band gap in room temperature diffuse reflectance absorbance measurements. Together these findings unambiguously show that EuCd_{2}As_{2} is indeed a semiconductor with a substantial band gap and not a topological semimetal.

Differential Multi-probe Thermal Transport Measurements of Multi-walled Carbon Nanotubes grown by Chemical Vapor Deposition

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are quasi-1D nanostructures that display both high thermal conductivity and intriguing low-dimensional phonon transport phenomena. In comparison to the advances made in the theoretical calculation of the lattice thermal conductivity of CNTs, thermal transport measurements of CNTs have been limited by either the poor temperature sensitivity of Raman thermometry technique or the presence of contact thermal resistance errors in sensitive two-probe resistance thermometry measurements. Here we report advances in a multi-probe measurement of the intrinsic thermal conductivity of individual multi-walled CNT samples that are transferred from the growth substrate onto the measurement device. The sample-thermometer thermal interface resistance is directly measured by this multi-probe method and used to model the temperature distribution along the contacted sample segment. The detailed temperature profile helps to eliminate the contact thermal resistance error in the obtained thermal conductivity of the suspended sample segment. A differential electro-thermal bridge measurement method is established to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio and reduce the measurement uncertainty by over 40%. The obtained thermal resistances of multiple suspended segments of the same MWCNT sample increase linearly with increasing length, revealing diffusive phonon transport as a result of phonon-defect scattering in these MWCNTs. The measured thermal conductivity increases with temperature and reaches up to 390+- 20 W m-1 K-1 at room temperature for a 9-walled MWCNT. Theoretical analysis of the measurement results suggests submicron phonon mean free paths due to extrinsic phonon scattering by extended defects such as grain boundaries. The obtained thermal conductivity is decreased by a factor of 3 upon electron beam damage and surface contamination of the CNT sample.

Oxidation kinetics and non-Marcusian charge transfer in dimensionally confined semiconductors

Electrochemical reactions represent essential processes in fundamental chemistry that foster a wide range of applications. Although most electrochemical reactions in bulk substances can be well described by the classical Marcus-Gerischer charge transfer theory, the realistic reaction character and mechanism in dimensionally confined systems remain unknown. Here, we report the multiparametric survey on the kinetics of lateral photooxidation in structurally identical WS2 and MoS2 monolayers, where electrochemical oxidation occurs at the atomically thin monolayer edges. The oxidation rate is correlated quantitatively with various crystallographic and environmental parameters, including the density of reactive sites, humidity, temperature, and illumination fluence. In particular, we observe distinctive reaction barriers of 1.4 and 0.9 eV for the two structurally identical semiconductors and uncover an unusual non-Marcusian charge transfer mechanism in these dimensionally confined monolayers due to the limit in reactant supplies. A scenario of band bending is proposed to explain the discrepancy in reaction barriers. These results add important knowledge into the fundamental electrochemical reaction theory in low-dimensional systems.

Non-invasive digital etching of van der Waals semiconductors

The capability to finely tailor material thickness with simultaneous atomic precision and non-invasivity would be useful for constructing quantum platforms and post-Moore microelectronics. However, it remains challenging to attain synchronized controls over tailoring selectivity and precision. Here we report a protocol that allows for non-invasive and atomically digital etching of van der Waals transition-metal dichalcogenides through selective alloying via low-temperature thermal diffusion and subsequent wet etching. The mechanism of selective alloying between sacrifice metal atoms and defective or pristine dichalcogenides is analyzed with high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy. Also, the non-invasive nature and atomic level precision of our etching technique are corroborated by consistent spectral, crystallographic and electrical characterization measurements. The low-temperature charge mobility of as-etched MoS$_2$ reaches up to $1200\,$cm$^{2}\cdot$V$^{-1}\cdot$s$^{-1}$, comparable to that of exfoliated pristine counterparts. The entire protocol represents a highly precise and non-invasive tailoring route for material manipulation.

Using Explainable AI to Cross-Validate Socio-economic Disparities Among Covid-19 Patient Mortality

This paper applies eXplainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) methods to investigate the socioeconomic disparities in COVID patient mortality. An Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) prediction model is built based on a de-identified Austin area hospital dataset to predict the mortality of COVID-19 patients. We apply two XAI methods, Shapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) and Locally Interpretable Model Agnostic Explanations (LIME), to compare the global and local interpretation of feature importance. This paper demonstrates the advantages of using XAI which shows the feature importance and decisive capability. Furthermore, we use the XAI methods to cross-validate their interpretations for individual patients. The XAI models reveal that Medicare financial class, older age, and gender have high impact on the mortality prediction. We find that LIME local interpretation does not show significant differences in feature importance comparing to SHAP, which suggests pattern confirmation. This paper demonstrates the importance of XAI methods in cross-validation of feature attributions.

True or false? Cognitive load when reading COVID-19 news headlines: an eye-tracking study

Misinformation is an important topic in the Information Retrieval (IR) context and has implications for both system-centered and user-centered IR. While it has been established that the performance in discerning misinformation is affected by a person's cognitive load, the variation in cognitive load in judging the veracity of news is less understood. To understand the variation in cognitive load imposed by reading news headlines related to COVID-19 claims, within the context of a fact-checking system, we conducted a within-subject, lab-based, quasi-experiment (N=40) with eye-tracking. Our results suggest that examining true claims imposed a higher cognitive load on participants when news headlines provided incorrect evidence for a claim and were inconsistent with the person's prior beliefs. In contrast, checking false claims imposed a higher cognitive load when the news headlines provided correct evidence for a claim and were consistent with the participants' prior beliefs. However, changing beliefs after examining a claim did not have a significant relationship with cognitive load while reading the news headlines. The results illustrate that reading news headlines related to true and false claims in the fact-checking context impose different levels of cognitive load. Our findings suggest that user engagement with tools for discerning misinformation needs to account for the possible variation in the mental effort involved in different information contexts.

Prediction of Hot Zone-center Optical Phonons in Laser Irradiated Molybdenum Disulfide with a Semiconductor Multitemperature Model

Previous multitemperature model (MTM) resolving phonon temperatures at the polarization level and measurements have uncovered remarkable nonequilibrium among different phonon polarizations in laser irradiated graphene and metals. Here, we develop a semiconductor-specific MTM (SC-MTM) by including electron-hole pair generation, diffusion, and recombination, and show that a phonon polarization-level model does not yield observable polarization-based nonequilibrium in laser-irradiated molybdenum disulfide (MoS$_2$). In contrast, appreciable nonequilibrium is predicted between zone-center optical phonons and the other modes. The momentum-based nonequilibrium ratio is found to increase with decreasing laser spot size and interaction with a substrate. This finding is relevant to the understanding of the energy relaxation process in two-dimensional optoelectronic devices and Raman measurements of thermal transport.

Effects of hot phonons and thermal stress in micro-Raman spectra of molybdenum disulphide

Micro-Raman spectroscopy has become an important tool in probing thermophysical behavior in emerging functional materials such as two-dimensional (2D) layered structures. Localized heating by the focused Raman excitation laser beam is expected to produce both stress and nonequilibrium temperature distributions in the material. Here we investigate the effects of hot optical phonons in the Raman spectra of molybdenum disulphide (MoS2) and distinguish them from those caused by thermally-induced compressive stress, which causes a Raman frequency blue shift in the focused Raman laser spot. With the stress effect accounted for in micro-Raman measurements, the degree of nonequilibrium between the hot optical phonons and the acoustic phonon bath is found to be much smaller than those observed in prior micro-Raman measurements of suspended graphene. The observation agrees with a first-principles based theoretical prediction of overpopulated zone-center optical phonons compared to other optical phonons in the Brillouin zone and acoustic phonons. The findings provide detailed insight into the energy relaxation processes in this emerging 2D transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) electronic and optoelectronic material and clarify an important question in micro-Raman measurements of thermal transport in this and other 2D materials.

Frequency-dependent Phonon-mediated Unidirectional Magnetoresistance in a Metal on an Insulator with Highly Nonequilibrium Magnons

Heavy metal (HM)/magnet bilayers host many magnetoresistances (MR) and spin caloritronic effects. Here we show that the spin Peltier effect and electron-phonon scattering produce much larger unidirectional MR of an HM on a magnetic insulator than existing theories that neglect the interplay between MR and spin caloritronic effects. By accounting for local nonequilibrium in both the magnon chemical potential and temperature, our analytical model attributes the observed frequency dependence of the spin Peltier MR and the spin Seebeck effect to the reduction of the thermal penetration depth, which approaches the 1 micron scale magnon spin diffusion length at high frequencies.

A Semantic Segmentation Network Based Real-Time Computer-Aided Diagnosis System for Hydatidiform Mole Hydrops Lesion Recognition in Microscopic View

As a disease with malignant potential, hydatidiform mole (HM) is one of the most common gestational trophoblastic diseases. For pathologists, the HM section of hydrops lesions is an important basis for diagnosis. In pathology departments, the diverse microscopic manifestations of HM lesions and the limited view under the microscope mean that physicians with extensive diagnostic experience are required to prevent missed diagnosis and misdiagnosis. Feature extraction can significantly improve the accuracy and speed of the diagnostic process. As a remarkable diagnosis assisting technology, computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) has been widely used in clinical practice. We constructed a deep-learning-based CAD system to identify HM hydrops lesions in the microscopic view in real-time. The system consists of three modules; the image mosaic module and edge extension module process the image to improve the outcome of the hydrops lesion recognition module, which adopts a semantic segmentation network, our novel compound loss function, and a stepwise training function in order to achieve the best performance in identifying hydrops lesions. We evaluated our system using an HM hydrops dataset. Experiments show that our system is able to respond in real-time and correctly display the entire microscopic view with accurately labeled HM hydrops lesions.

Segmentation Network with Compound Loss Function for Hydatidiform Mole Hydrops Lesion Recognition

Pathological morphology diagnosis is the standard diagnosis method of hydatidiform mole. As a disease with malignant potential, the hydatidiform mole section of hydrops lesions is an important basis for diagnosis. Due to incomplete lesion development, early hydatidiform mole is difficult to distinguish, resulting in a low accuracy of clinical diagnosis. As a remarkable machine learning technology, image semantic segmentation networks have been used in many medical image recognition tasks. We developed a hydatidiform mole hydrops lesion segmentation model based on a novel loss function and training method. The model consists of different networks that segment the section image at the pixel and lesion levels. Our compound loss function assign weights to the segmentation results of the two levels to calculate the loss. We then propose a stagewise training method to combine the advantages of various loss functions at different levels. We evaluate our method on a hydatidiform mole hydrops dataset. Experiments show that the proposed model with our loss function and training method has good recognition performance under different segmentation metrics.

The Effects of Interactive AI Design on User Behavior: An Eye-tracking Study of Fact-checking COVID-19 Claims

We conducted a lab-based eye-tracking study to investigate how the interactivity of an AI-powered fact-checking system affects user interactions, such as dwell time, attention, and mental resources involved in using the system. A within-subject experiment was conducted, where participants used an interactive and a non-interactive version of a mock AI fact-checking system and rated their perceived correctness of COVID-19 related claims. We collected web-page interactions, eye-tracking data, and mental workload using NASA-TLX. We found that the presence of the affordance of interactively manipulating the AI system's prediction parameters affected users' dwell times, and eye-fixations on AOIs, but not mental workload. In the interactive system, participants spent the most time evaluating claims' correctness, followed by reading news. This promising result shows a positive role of interactivity in a mixed-initiative AI-powered system.

Optimizing Data Intensive Flows for Networks on Chips

Data flow analysis and optimization is considered for homogeneous rectangular mesh networks. We propose a flow matrix equation which allows a closed-form characterization of the nature of the minimal time solution, speedup and a simple method to determine when and how much load to distribute to processors. We also propose a rigorous mathematical proof about the flow matrix optimal solution existence and that the solution is unique. The methodology introduced here is applicable to many interconnection networks and switching protocols (as an example we examine toroidal networks and hypercube networks in this paper). An important application is improving chip area and chip scalability for networks on chips processing divisible style loads.

Raman Linewidth Contributions from Four-Phonon and Electron-Phonon Interactions in Graphene

The Raman peak position and linewidth provide insight into phonon anharmonicity and electron-phonon interactions (EPI) in materials. For monolayer graphene, prior first-principles calculations have yielded decreasing linewidth with increasing temperature, which is opposite to measurement results. Here, we explicitly consider four-phonon anharmonicity, phonon renormalization, and electron-phonon coupling, and find all to be important to successfully explain both the $G$ peak frequency shift and linewidths in our suspended graphene sample at a wide temperature range. Four-phonon scattering contributes a prominent linewidth that increases with temperature, while temperature dependence from EPI is found to be reversed above a doping threshold ($\hbarω_G/2$, with $ω_G$ being the frequency of the $G$ phonon).

Transient Hydrodynamic Lattice Cooling by Picosecond Laser Irradiation of Graphite

Recent theories and experiments have suggested hydrodynamic phonon transport features in graphite at unusually high temperatures. Here, we report a pico-second pump-probe thermal reflectance measurement of heat pulse propagation in graphite. The measurement results reveal transient lattice cooling near the adiabatic center of a 15 $μ$m diameter ring-shape pump beam at temperatures between 80 and 120 K. While such lattice cooling has not been reported in recent diffraction measurements of second sound in graphite, the observation here is consistent with both hydrodynamic phonon transport theory and prior heat pulse measurements of second sound in bulk sodium fluoride.

Improvement of EAST Data Acquisition Configuration Management

The data acquisition console is an important component of the EAST data acquisition system which provides unified data acquisition and long-term data storage for diagnostics. The data acquisition console is used to manage the data acquisition configuration information and control the data acquisition workflow. The data acquisition console has been developed many years, and with increasing of data acquisition nodes and emergence of new control nodes, the function of configuration management has become inadequate. It is going to update the configuration management function of data acquisition console. The upgraded data acquisition console based on LabVIEW should be oriented to the data acquisition administrator, with the functions of managing data acquisition nodes, managing control nodes, setting and publishing configuration parameters, batch management, database backup, monitoring the status of data acquisition nodes, controlling the data acquisition workflow, and shot simulation data acquisition test. The upgraded data acquisition console has been designed and under testing recently.

Thermal expansion coefficient and lattice anharmonicity of cubic boron arsenide

Recent measurements of an unusual high thermal conductivity of around 1000 W m-1 K-1 at room temperature in cubic boron arsenide (BAs) confirm predictions from theory and suggest potential applications of this semiconductor compound for thermal management applications. Knowledge of the thermal expansion coefficient and Grüneisen parameter of a material contributes both to the fundamental understanding of its lattice anharmonicity and to assessing its utility as a thermal-management material. However, previous theoretical calculations of the thermal expansion coefficient and Grüneisen parameter of BAs yield inconsistent results. Here we report the linear thermal expansion coefficient of BAs obtained from the X-ray diffraction measurements from 300 K to 773 K. The measurement results are in good agreement with our ab initio calculations that account for atomic interactions up to fifth nearest neighbours. With the measured thermal expansion coefficient and specific heat, a Grüneisen parameter of BAs of 0.84 +/- 0.09 is obtained at 300 K, in excellent agreement with the value of 0.82 calculated from first principles and much lower than prior theoretical results. Our results confirm that BAs exhibits a better thermal expansion coefficient match with commonly used semiconductors than other high-thermal conductivity materials such as diamond and cubic boron nitride.
