A Survey on Deep Multi-modal Learning for Body Language Recognition and Generation

Body language (BL) refers to the non-verbal communication expressed through physical movements, gestures, facial expressions, and postures. It is a form of communication that conveys information, emotions, attitudes, and intentions without the use of spoken or written words. It plays a crucial role in interpersonal interactions and can complement or even override verbal communication. Deep multi-modal learning techniques have shown promise in understanding and analyzing these diverse aspects of BL. The survey emphasizes their applications to BL generation and recognition. Several common BLs are considered i.e., Sign Language (SL), Cued Speech (CS), Co-speech (CoS), and Talking Head (TH), and we have conducted an analysis and established the connections among these four BL for the first time. Their generation and recognition often involve multi-modal approaches. Benchmark datasets for BL research are well collected and organized, along with the evaluation of SOTA methods on these datasets. The survey highlights challenges such as limited labeled data, multi-modal learning, and the need for domain adaptation to generalize models to unseen speakers or languages. Future research directions are presented, including exploring self-supervised learning techniques, integrating contextual information from other modalities, and exploiting large-scale pre-trained multi-modal models. In summary, this survey paper provides a comprehensive understanding of deep multi-modal learning for various BL generations and recognitions for the first time. By analyzing advancements, challenges, and future directions, it serves as a valuable resource for researchers and practitioners in advancing this field. n addition, we maintain a continuously updated paper list for deep multi-modal learning for BL recognition and generation: https://github.com/wentaoL86/awesome-body-language.

Cuing Without Sharing: A Federated Cued Speech Recognition Framework via Mutual Knowledge Distillation

Cued Speech (CS) is a visual coding tool to encode spoken languages at the phonetic level, which combines lip-reading and hand gestures to effectively assist communication among people with hearing impairments. The Automatic CS Recognition (ACSR) task aims to recognize CS videos into linguistic texts, which involves both lips and hands as two distinct modalities conveying complementary information. However, the traditional centralized training approach poses potential privacy risks due to the use of facial and gesture videos in CS data. To address this issue, we propose a new Federated Cued Speech Recognition (FedCSR) framework to train an ACSR model over the decentralized CS data without sharing private information. In particular, a mutual knowledge distillation method is proposed to maintain cross-modal semantic consistency of the Non-IID CS data, which ensures learning a unified feature space for both linguistic and visual information. On the server side, a globally shared linguistic model is trained to capture the long-term dependencies in the text sentences, which is aligned with the visual information from the local clients via visual-to-linguistic distillation. On the client side, the visual model of each client is trained with its own local data, assisted by linguistic-to-visual distillation treating the linguistic model as the teacher. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first approach to consider the federated ACSR task for privacy protection. Experimental results on the Chinese CS dataset with multiple cuers demonstrate that our approach outperforms both mainstream federated learning baselines and existing centralized state-of-the-art ACSR methods, achieving 9.7% performance improvement for character error rate (CER) and 15.0% for word error rate (WER).

Semiconducting transport in Pb$_{10-x}$Cu$_x$(PO$_4$)$_6$O sintered from Pb$_2$SO$_5$ and Cu$_3$P

The very recent claim on the discovery of ambient-pressure room-temperature superconductivity in modified lead-apatite has immediately excited sensational attention in the entire society, which is fabricated by sintering lanarkite (Pb2SO5) and copper(I) phosphide (Cu$_3$P). To verify this exciting claim, we have successfully synthesized Pb$_2$SO$_5$, Cu$_3$P, and finally the modified lead-apatite Pb$_{10-x}$Cu$_x$(PO$_4$)$_6$O. Detailed electrical transport and magnetic properties of these compounds were systematically analyzed. It turns out that Pb$_2$SO$_5$ is a highly insulating diamagnet with a room-temperature resistivity of ~7.18x10$^9$ Ohm.cm and Cu$_3$P is a paramagnetic metal with a room-temperature resistivity of ~5.22x10$^{-4}$ Ohm.cm. In contrast to the claimed superconductivity, the resulting Pb$_{10-x}$Cu$_x$(PO$_4$)$_6$O compound sintered from Pb$_2$SO$_5$ and Cu$_3$P exhibits semiconductor-like transport behavior with a large room-temperature resistivity of ~1.94x10$^4$ Ohm.cm although our compound shows greatly consistent x-ray diffraction spectrum with the previously reported structure data. In addition, when a pressed Pb$_{10-x}$Cu$_x$(PO$_4$)$_6$O pellet is located on top of a commercial Nd$_2$Fe$_{14}$B magnet at room temperature, no repulsion could be felt and no magnetic levitation was observed either. These results imply that the claim of a room-temperature superconductor in modified lead-apatite may need more careful re-examination, especially for the electrical transport properties.

SwinMM: Masked Multi-view with Swin Transformers for 3D Medical Image Segmentation

Recent advancements in large-scale Vision Transformers have made significant strides in improving pre-trained models for medical image segmentation. However, these methods face a notable challenge in acquiring a substantial amount of pre-training data, particularly within the medical field. To address this limitation, we present Masked Multi-view with Swin Transformers (SwinMM), a novel multi-view pipeline for enabling accurate and data-efficient self-supervised medical image analysis. Our strategy harnesses the potential of multi-view information by incorporating two principal components. In the pre-training phase, we deploy a masked multi-view encoder devised to concurrently train masked multi-view observations through a range of diverse proxy tasks. These tasks span image reconstruction, rotation, contrastive learning, and a novel task that employs a mutual learning paradigm. This new task capitalizes on the consistency between predictions from various perspectives, enabling the extraction of hidden multi-view information from 3D medical data. In the fine-tuning stage, a cross-view decoder is developed to aggregate the multi-view information through a cross-attention block. Compared with the previous state-of-the-art self-supervised learning method Swin UNETR, SwinMM demonstrates a notable advantage on several medical image segmentation tasks. It allows for a smooth integration of multi-view information, significantly boosting both the accuracy and data-efficiency of the model. Code and models are available at https://github.com/UCSC-VLAA/SwinMM/.

ROFusion: Efficient Object Detection using Hybrid Point-wise Radar-Optical Fusion

Radars, due to their robustness to adverse weather conditions and ability to measure object motions, have served in autonomous driving and intelligent agents for years. However, Radar-based perception suffers from its unintuitive sensing data, which lack of semantic and structural information of scenes. To tackle this problem, camera and Radar sensor fusion has been investigated as a trending strategy with low cost, high reliability and strong maintenance. While most recent works explore how to explore Radar point clouds and images, rich contextual information within Radar observation are discarded. In this paper, we propose a hybrid point-wise Radar-Optical fusion approach for object detection in autonomous driving scenarios. The framework benefits from dense contextual information from both the range-doppler spectrum and images which are integrated to learn a multi-modal feature representation. Furthermore, we propose a novel local coordinate formulation, tackling the object detection task in an object-centric coordinate. Extensive results show that with the information gained from optical images, we could achieve leading performance in object detection (97.69\% recall) compared to recent state-of-the-art methods FFT-RadNet (82.86\% recall). Ablation studies verify the key design choices and practicability of our approach given machine generated imperfect detections. The code will be available at https://github.com/LiuLiu-55/ROFusion.

Unbiased Scene Graph Generation via Two-stage Causal Modeling

Despite the impressive performance of recent unbiased Scene Graph Generation (SGG) methods, the current debiasing literature mainly focuses on the long-tailed distribution problem, whereas it overlooks another source of bias, i.e., semantic confusion, which makes the SGG model prone to yield false predictions for similar relationships. In this paper, we explore a debiasing procedure for the SGG task leveraging causal inference. Our central insight is that the Sparse Mechanism Shift (SMS) in causality allows independent intervention on multiple biases, thereby potentially preserving head category performance while pursuing the prediction of high-informative tail relationships. However, the noisy datasets lead to unobserved confounders for the SGG task, and thus the constructed causal models are always causal-insufficient to benefit from SMS. To remedy this, we propose Two-stage Causal Modeling (TsCM) for the SGG task, which takes the long-tailed distribution and semantic confusion as confounders to the Structural Causal Model (SCM) and then decouples the causal intervention into two stages. The first stage is causal representation learning, where we use a novel Population Loss (P-Loss) to intervene in the semantic confusion confounder. The second stage introduces the Adaptive Logit Adjustment (AL-Adjustment) to eliminate the long-tailed distribution confounder to complete causal calibration learning. These two stages are model agnostic and thus can be used in any SGG model that seeks unbiased predictions. Comprehensive experiments conducted on the popular SGG backbones and benchmarks show that our TsCM can achieve state-of-the-art performance in terms of mean recall rate. Furthermore, TsCM can maintain a higher recall rate than other debiasing methods, which indicates that our method can achieve a better tradeoff between head and tail relationships.

Deep Intellectual Property Protection: A Survey

Deep Neural Networks (DNNs), from AlexNet to ResNet to ChatGPT, have made revolutionary progress in recent years, and are widely used in various fields. The high performance of DNNs requires a huge amount of high-quality data, expensive computing hardware, and excellent DNN architectures that are costly to obtain. Therefore, trained DNNs are becoming valuable assets and must be considered the Intellectual Property (IP) of the legitimate owner who created them, in order to protect trained DNN models from illegal reproduction, stealing, redistribution, or abuse. Although being a new emerging and interdisciplinary field, numerous DNN model IP protection methods have been proposed. Given this period of rapid evolution, the goal of this paper is to provide a comprehensive survey of two mainstream DNN IP protection methods: deep watermarking and deep fingerprinting, with a proposed taxonomy. More than 190 research contributions are included in this survey, covering many aspects of Deep IP Protection: problem definition, main threats and challenges, merits and demerits of deep watermarking and deep fingerprinting methods, evaluation metrics, and performance discussion. We finish the survey by identifying promising directions for future research.

UniOcc: Unifying Vision-Centric 3D Occupancy Prediction with Geometric and Semantic Rendering

In this technical report, we present our solution, named UniOCC, for the Vision-Centric 3D occupancy prediction track in the nuScenes Open Dataset Challenge at CVPR 2023. Existing methods for occupancy prediction primarily focus on optimizing projected features on 3D volume space using 3D occupancy labels. However, the generation process of these labels is complex and expensive (relying on 3D semantic annotations), and limited by voxel resolution, they cannot provide fine-grained spatial semantics. To address this limitation, we propose a novel Unifying Occupancy (UniOcc) prediction method, explicitly imposing spatial geometry constraint and complementing fine-grained semantic supervision through volume ray rendering. Our method significantly enhances model performance and demonstrates promising potential in reducing human annotation costs. Given the laborious nature of annotating 3D occupancy, we further introduce a Depth-aware Teacher Student (DTS) framework to enhance prediction accuracy using unlabeled data. Our solution achieves 51.27\% mIoU on the official leaderboard with single model, placing 3rd in this challenge.

Emotional Talking Head Generation based on Memory-Sharing and Attention-Augmented Networks

Given an audio clip and a reference face image, the goal of the talking head generation is to generate a high-fidelity talking head video. Although some audio-driven methods of generating talking head videos have made some achievements in the past, most of them only focused on lip and audio synchronization and lack the ability to reproduce the facial expressions of the target person. To this end, we propose a talking head generation model consisting of a Memory-Sharing Emotion Feature extractor (MSEF) and an Attention-Augmented Translator based on U-net (AATU). Firstly, MSEF can extract implicit emotional auxiliary features from audio to estimate more accurate emotional face landmarks.~Secondly, AATU acts as a translator between the estimated landmarks and the photo-realistic video frames. Extensive qualitative and quantitative experiments have shown the superiority of the proposed method to the previous works. Codes will be made publicly available.

A Novel Interpretable and Generalizable Re-synchronization Model for Cued Speech based on a Multi-Cuer Corpus

Cued Speech (CS) is a multi-modal visual coding system combining lip reading with several hand cues at the phonetic level to make the spoken language visible to the hearing impaired. Previous studies solved asynchronous problems between lip and hand movements by a cuer\footnote{The people who perform Cued Speech are called the cuer.}-dependent piecewise linear model for English and French CS. In this work, we innovatively propose three statistical measure on the lip stream to build an interpretable and generalizable model for predicting hand preceding time (HPT), which achieves cuer-independent by a proper normalization. Particularly, we build the first Mandarin CS corpus comprising annotated videos from five speakers including three normal and two hearing impaired individuals. Consequently, we show that the hand preceding phenomenon exists in Mandarin CS production with significant differences between normal and hearing impaired people. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our model outperforms the baseline and the previous state-of-the-art methods.

MAVD: The First Open Large-Scale Mandarin Audio-Visual Dataset with Depth Information

Audio-visual speech recognition (AVSR) gains increasing attention from researchers as an important part of human-computer interaction. However, the existing available Mandarin audio-visual datasets are limited and lack the depth information. To address this issue, this work establishes the MAVD, a new large-scale Mandarin multimodal corpus comprising 12,484 utterances spoken by 64 native Chinese speakers. To ensure the dataset covers diverse real-world scenarios, a pipeline for cleaning and filtering the raw text material has been developed to create a well-balanced reading material. In particular, the latest data acquisition device of Microsoft, Azure Kinect is used to capture depth information in addition to the traditional audio signals and RGB images during data acquisition. We also provide a baseline experiment, which could be used to evaluate the effectiveness of the dataset. The dataset and code will be released at https://github.com/SpringHuo/MAVD.

MetaLR: Meta-tuning of Learning Rates for Transfer Learning in Medical Imaging

In medical image analysis, transfer learning is a powerful method for deep neural networks (DNNs) to generalize well on limited medical data. Prior efforts have focused on developing pre-training algorithms on domains such as lung ultrasound, chest X-ray, and liver CT to bridge domain gaps. However, we find that model fine-tuning also plays a crucial role in adapting medical knowledge to target tasks. The common fine-tuning method is manually picking transferable layers (e.g., the last few layers) to update, which is labor-expensive. In this work, we propose a meta-learning-based LR tuner, named MetaLR, to make different layers automatically co-adapt to downstream tasks based on their transferabilities across domains. MetaLR learns appropriate LRs for different layers in an online manner, preventing highly transferable layers from forgetting their medical representation abilities and driving less transferable layers to adapt actively to new domains. Extensive experiments on various medical applications show that MetaLR outperforms previous state-of-the-art (SOTA) fine-tuning strategies. Codes are released.

X-IQE: eXplainable Image Quality Evaluation for Text-to-Image Generation with Visual Large Language Models

This paper introduces a novel explainable image quality evaluation approach called X-IQE, which leverages visual large language models (LLMs) to evaluate text-to-image generation methods by generating textual explanations. X-IQE utilizes a hierarchical Chain of Thought (CoT) to enable MiniGPT-4 to produce self-consistent, unbiased texts that are highly correlated with human evaluation. It offers several advantages, including the ability to distinguish between real and generated images, evaluate text-image alignment, and assess image aesthetics without requiring model training or fine-tuning. X-IQE is more cost-effective and efficient compared to human evaluation, while significantly enhancing the transparency and explainability of deep image quality evaluation models. We validate the effectiveness of our method as a benchmark using images generated by prevalent diffusion models. X-IQE demonstrates similar performance to state-of-the-art (SOTA) evaluation methods on COCO Caption, while overcoming the limitations of previous evaluation models on DrawBench, particularly in handling ambiguous generation prompts and text recognition in generated images. Topotactic Transition: A Promising Opportunity for Creating New Oxides

Topotactic transition is a structural phase change in a matrix crystal lattice mediated by the ordered loss/gain and rearrangement of atoms, leading to unusual coordination environments and metal atoms with rare valent states. As early as in 1990s, low temperature hydride reduction was utilized to realize the topotactic transition. Since then, topological transformations have been developed via multiple approaches. Especially, the recent discovery of the Ni-based superconductivity in infinite-layer nickelates has greatly boosted the topotactic transition mean to synthesizing new oxides for exploring exotic functional properties. In this review, we have provided a detailed and generalized introduction to oxygen-related topotactic transition. The main body of our review include four parts: the structure-facilitated effects, the mechanism of the topotactic transition, some examples of topotactic transition methods adopted in different metal oxides (V, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni) and the related applications. This work is to provide timely and thorough strategies to successfully realize topotactic transitions for researchers who are eager to create new oxide phases or new oxide materials with desired functions.

Evans-Lewis inequalities in dimension three

In proving Rellich inequalities in the framework of equalities, N. Bez, S. Machihara, and T. Ozawa obtained some interesting norm inequalities in the spirit of Evans and Lewis that compare the standard Laplacian with its radial and spherical components. In this paper we give a simple unified proof and a strict improvement of these Evans-Lewis inequalities in the subtle dimension three case. Our approach is robust and explains clearly the occurrence of the sharp constant.

The Mollow triplets under few-photon excitation

Resonant excitation is an essential tool in the development of semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) for quantum information processing. One central challenge is to enable a transparent access to the QD signal without post-selection information loss. A viable path is through cavity enhancement, which has successfully lifted the resonantly scattered field strength over the laser background under \emph{weak} excitation. Here, we extend this success to the \emph{saturation} regime using a QD-micropillar device with a Purcell factor of 10.9 and an ultra-low background cavity reflectivity of just 0.0089. We achieve a signal to background ratio of 50 and an overall system responsivity of 3~\%, i.e., we detect on average 0.03 resonantly scattered single photons for every incident laser photon. Raising the excitation to the few-photon level, the QD response is brought into saturation where we observe the Mollow triplets as well as the associated cascade single photon emissions, without resort to any laser background rejection technique. Our work offers a new perspective toward QD cavity interface that is not restricted by the laser background.

A Comprehensive Survey on Segment Anything Model for Vision and Beyond

Artificial intelligence (AI) is evolving towards artificial general intelligence, which refers to the ability of an AI system to perform a wide range of tasks and exhibit a level of intelligence similar to that of a human being. This is in contrast to narrow or specialized AI, which is designed to perform specific tasks with a high degree of efficiency. Therefore, it is urgent to design a general class of models, which we term foundation models, trained on broad data that can be adapted to various downstream tasks. The recently proposed segment anything model (SAM) has made significant progress in breaking the boundaries of segmentation, greatly promoting the development of foundation models for computer vision. To fully comprehend SAM, we conduct a survey study. As the first to comprehensively review the progress of segmenting anything task for vision and beyond based on the foundation model of SAM, this work focuses on its applications to various tasks and data types by discussing its historical development, recent progress, and profound impact on broad applications. We first introduce the background and terminology for foundation models including SAM, as well as state-of-the-art methods contemporaneous with SAM that are significant for segmenting anything task. Then, we analyze and summarize the advantages and limitations of SAM across various image processing applications, including software scenes, real-world scenes, and complex scenes. Importantly, many insights are drawn to guide future research to develop more versatile foundation models and improve the architecture of SAM. We also summarize massive other amazing applications of SAM in vision and beyond. Finally, we maintain a continuously updated paper list and an open-source project summary for foundation model SAM at \href{https://github.com/liliu-avril/Awesome-Segment-Anything}{\color{magenta}{here}}.

Deep Reinforcement Learning-Based Control for Stomach Coverage Scanning of Wireless Capsule Endoscopy

Due to its non-invasive and painless characteristics, wireless capsule endoscopy has become the new gold standard for assessing gastrointestinal disorders. Omissions, however, could occur throughout the examination since controlling capsule endoscope can be challenging. In this work, we control the magnetic capsule endoscope for the coverage scanning task in the stomach based on reinforcement learning so that the capsule can comprehensively scan every corner of the stomach. We apply a well-made virtual platform named VR-Caps to simulate the process of stomach coverage scanning with a capsule endoscope model. We utilize and compare two deep reinforcement learning algorithms, the Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO) and Soft Actor-Critic (SAC) algorithms, to train the permanent magnetic agent, which actuates the capsule endoscope directly via magnetic fields and then optimizes the scanning efficiency of stomach coverage. We analyze the pros and cons of the two algorithms with different hyperparameters and achieve a coverage rate of 98.04% of the stomach area within 150.37 seconds.
