Local Inertness of Poincar\'{e} duality complexes

We prove that, under certain homological conditions, the attaching map of the top cell of a Poincar\'{e} duality complex is inert when localised away from a finite set of primes. This improves on a result of F\'elix and Tanr\'e in these cases. As an additional application of the methods, we give a loop space decomposition of simply-connected $6$-dimensional Poincar\'{e} duality complexes satisfying certain hypotheses. We also show that, under the hypotheses of the inertness theorem, the $(n-1)$-skeleton of an $n$-dimensional Poincar\'{e} duality complex satisfies the hyperbolic form of Moore's Conjecture after localising away from an explicit finite set of primes, and use this to obtain new examples of \(p\)-local maps between spheres that are not inert.

A colimit decomposition for the loop homology of polyhedral products

We show that the loop homology algebras of polyhedral products of the form $(\underline{X},\underline{*})^{\mathcal{K}}$ can be written as a colimit over the flagification of $\mathcal{K}$, and obtain a similar result for the Poincar\'e series. This effectively reduces the study of the algebras $H_*(\Omega(\underline{X},\underline{*})^{\mathcal{K}})$ to the case of 1-neighbourly simplicial complexes. We give presentations of the loop homology of Davis--Januszkiewicz spaces (i.e. Yoneda algebras of Stanley--Reisner rings) and calculate the Poincar\'e series of looped polyhedral products associated to various families of simplicial complexes, including HMF-presented complexes and skeleta of flag complexes.

Anick's conjecture for polyhedral products

We develop a method for studying the pointed loop space of general polyhedral products, showing that many properties are determined by the moment-angle complex. To apply the method, we show that localised away from a finite set of primes, the loop space of a moment-angle complex is homotopy equivalent to a product of loops on spheres. As a consequence, we give p-local loop space decompositions of quasitoric manifolds, certain toric orbifolds and a wide family of polyhedral products. This verifies a conjecture of Anick for such spaces. We also describe the additive structure of loop homology of simply connected polyhedral products in terms of polynomials studied by Backelin and Berglund.

Loop spaces of $n$-dimensional Poincar\'e duality complexes whose $(n-1)$-skeleton is a co-$H$-space

Under certain hypotheses, we prove a loop space decomposition for simply-connected Poincar\'e Duality complexes of dimension $n$ whose $(n-1)$-skeleton is a co-$H$-space. This unifies many known decompositions obtained in different contexts and establishes many new families of examples. As consequences, we show that such a looped Poincar\'{e} Duality complex retracts off the loops of its $(n-1)$-skeleton and describe its homology as a one-relator algebra.

Polyhedral products associated to pseudomanifolds

We study the homotopy theory of polyhedral products associated to a combinatorial generalisation of manifolds known as pseudomanifolds. As special cases, we show that loop spaces of moment-angle manifolds associated to triangulations of $S^2$ and $S^3$ decompose as a product of spheres and loops on spheres.

Loop space decompositions of moment-angle complexes associated to two dimensional simplicial complexes

We show that the loop space of a moment-angle complex associated to a $2$-dimensional simplicial complex decomposes as a finite type product of spheres, loops on spheres, and certain indecomposable spaces which appear in the loop space decomposition of Moore spaces. We also give conditions on certain subcomplexes under which, localised away from sufficiently many primes, the loop space of a moment-angle complex decomposes as a finite type product of spheres and loops on spheres.

Polyhedral coproducts

Dualising the construction of a polyhedral product, we introduce the notion of a polyhedral coproduct as a certain homotopy limit over the face poset of a simplicial complex. We begin a study of the basic properties of polyhedral coproducts, surveying the Eckmann-Hilton duals of various familiar examples and properties of polyhedral products. In particular, we show that polyhedral coproducts give a functorial interpolation between the wedge and cartesian product of spaces which differs from the one given by polyhedral products, and we establish a general loop space decomposition for these spaces which is dual to the suspension splitting of a polyhedral product due to Bahri, Bendersky, Cohen and Gitler.

Loop space decompositions of moment-angle complexes associated to flag complexes

We prove that the loop space of the moment-angle complex associated to the $k$-skeleton of a flag complex belongs to the class $\mathcal{P}$ of spaces homotopy equivalent to a finite type product of spheres and loops on simply connected spheres. To do this, a general result showing $\mathcal{P}$ is closed under retracts is proved.

Graphs with equal girth and circumference

We characterise the form of all simple, finite graphs for which the girth of the graph is equal to the circumference of the graph. We apply this to prove a bound on the number of edges in such a graph.

Structure of a Maximal Total Independent Set

Let $G$ be a simple, connected and finite graph with order $n$. Denote the independence number, edge independence number and total independence number by $\alpha(G), \alpha'(G)$ and $\alpha"(G)$ respectively. This paper establishes a relation between $\alpha"(G)$ with $\alpha(G)$, $\alpha'(G)$ and $n$. It also describes the possible structures of a total independent set of a given size.
