On stability of cooperative and hereditary systems with a distributed delay

We consider a system $\displaystyle \frac{dx}{dt}=r_1(t) G_1(x) \left[ \int_{h_1(t)}^t f_1(y(s))~d_s R_1 (t,s) - x(t) \right], \frac{dy}{dt}=r_2(t) G_2(y) \left[ \int_{h_2(t)}^t f_2(x(s))~d_s R_2 (t,s) - y(t)\right]$ with increasing functions $f_1$ and $f_2$, which has at most one positive equilibrium. Here the values of the functions $r_i,G_i,f_i$ are positive for positive arguments, the delays in the cooperative term can be distributed and unbounded, both systems with concentrated delays and integro-differential systems are a particular case of the considered system. Analyzing the relation of the functions $f_1$ and $f_2$, we obtain several possible scenarios of the global behaviour. They include the cases when all nontrivial positive solutions tend to the same attractor which can be the positive equilibrium, the origin or infinity. Another possibility is the dependency of asymptotics on the initial conditions: either solutions with large enough initial values tend to the equilibrium, while others tend to zero, or solutions with small enough initial values tend to the equilibrium, while others infinitely grow. In some sense solutions of the equation are intrinsically non-oscillatory: if both initial functions are less/greater than the equilibrium value, so is the solution for any positive time value. The paper continues the study of equations with monotone production functions initiated in [Nonlinearity, 2013, 2833-2849].

New Global Exponential Stability Criteria for Nonlinear Delay Differential Systems with Applications to BAM Neural Networks

We consider a nonlinear non-autonomous system with time-varying delays $$ \dot{x_i}(t)=-a_i(t)x_{i}(h_i(t))+\sum_{j=1}^mF_{ij}(t,x_j(g_{ij}(t))) $$ which has a large number of applications in the theory of artificial neural networks. Via the M-matrix method, easily verifiable sufficient stability conditions for the nonlinear system and its linear version are obtained. Application of the main theorem requires just to check whether a matrix, which is explicitly constructed by the system's parameters, is an $M$-matrix. Comparison with the tests obtained by K. Gopalsamy (2007) and B. Liu (2013) for BAM neural networks illustrates novelty of the stability theorems. Some open problems conclude the paper.

New Stability Conditions for Linear Difference Equations using Bohl-Perron Type Theorems

The Bohl-Perron result on exponential dichotomy for a linear difference equation $$ x(n+1)-x(n) + \sum_{l=1}^m a_l(n)x(h_l(n))=0, h_l(n)\leq n, $$ states (under some natural conditions) that if all solutions of the non-homogeneous equation with a bounded right hand side are bounded, then the relevant homogeneous equation is exponentially stable. According to its corollary, if a given equation is {\em close} to an exponentially stable comparison equation (the norm of some operator is less than one), then the considered equation is exponentially stable. For a difference equation with several variable delays and coefficients we obtain new exponential stability tests using the above results, representation of solutions and comparison equations with a positive fundamental function.

Nonoscillation and Stability of the Second Order Ordinary Differential Equations with a Damping Term

In this paper we consider the linear ordinary equation of the second order $$ L x(t)\equiv \ddot{x}(t) +a(t)\dot{x}(t)+b(t)x(t)=f(t), \eqno{(1)} $$ and the corresponding homogeneous equation $$ \ddot{x}(t) +a(t)\dot{x}(t)+b(t)x(t)=0. \eqno{(2)} $$ Note that $[α,β]$ is called a nonoscillation interval if every nontrivial solution has at most one zero on this interval. Many investigations which seem to have no connection such as differential inequalities, the Polia-Mammana decomposition (i.e. representation of the operator $L$ in the form of products of the first order differential operators), unique solvability of the interpolation problems, kernels oscillation, separation of zeros, zones of Lyapunov's stability and some others have a certain common basis - nonoscillation. Presumably Sturm was the first to consider the two problems which naturally appear here: to develop corollaries of nonoscillation and to find methods to check nonoscillation. In this paper we obtain several tests for nonoscillation on the semiaxis and apply them to propose new results on asymptotic properties and the exponential stability of the second order equation (2). Using the Floquet representations and upper and lower estimates of nonoscillation intervals of oscillatory solutions we deduce results on the exponential and Lyapunov's stability and instability of equation (2).
