Hunting for top partner with a new signature at the LHC

Vector-like top partner plays a central role in many new physics models which attempt to address the hierarchy problem. The top partner is conventionally assumed to decay to a quark and a SM boson. However, it is also possible that the top partner decays to a non-SM scalar and a top quark. Such an exotic decay channel can be the main decay channel of top partner, and thus provides new windows to search for top partner at the LHC. In this paper, with classical machine learning method Boosted Decision Tree (BDT), we perform a model independent study of the discovery potential of this new signature at the LHC. In order to suppress the main QCD background, we consider subdominant but clean decay channel $a\to γγ$. For completeness, the single production process and pair production process of top partner are all taken into account. We find that, for both single and pair production, the future High-Luminosity LHC can exclude the top partner mass up to TeV scale through channel $T\to t a$ ($a\to γγ$), even if $BR(a\to γγ)$ is as small as $\mathcal{O}$(0.1\%). Besides, our result shows that single production can overmatch pair production at 14 TeV LHC, provided that top partner is heavier than $800\sim 900$ GeV.

Zero loci of Bernstein-Sato ideals

We prove a conjecture of the first author relating the Bernstein-Sato ideal of a finite collection of multivariate polynomials with cohomology support loci of rank one complex local systems. This generalizes a classical theorem of Malgrange and Kashiwara relating the b-function of a multivariate polynomial with the monodromy eigenvalues on the Milnor fibers cohomology.

Atmospheric Dark Matter and Xenon1T Excess

Very recently, the Xenon1T collaboration has reported an intriguing electron recoil excess, which may imply for light dark matter. In order to interpret this anomaly, we propose the atmospheric dark matter (ADM) from the inelastic collision of cosmic rays (CRs) with the atmosphere. Due to the boost effect of high energy CRs, we show that the light ADM can be fast-moving and successfully fit the observed electron recoil spectrum through the ADM-electron scattering process. Meanwhile, our ADM predicts the scattering cross section $σ_e \sim {\cal O}(10^{-38}- 10^{-39}$) cm$^{2}$, and thus can evade other direct detection constraints. The search for light meson rare decays, such as $η\to π+ \slashed E_T$, would provide a complementary probe of our ADM in the future.

Light gravitino dark matter: LHC searches and Hubble tension

The recent measurements of the cosmological parameter $H_0$ from the direct local observations and the inferred value from the Cosmic Microwave Background show $\sim 4 σ$ discrepancy. This may indicate new physics beyond the standard $Λ$CDM. We investigate the keV gravitino dark matter that has a small fraction of non-thermal component (e.g. from the late decay of NLSP bino) under various cosmological constraints. We find such a scenario is highly predictive and can be tested by searching for the dilepton plus missing energy events at the LHC. Besides, we also discuss its implication for Hubble tension, however, which can be reduced to $3σ$ level marginally.

Cosmic Ray Boosted Sub-GeV Gravitationally Interacting Dark Matter in Direct Detection

Detections of non-gravitational interactions of massive dark matter (DM) with visible sector so far have given null results. The DM may communicate with the ordinary matter only through gravitational interaction. Besides, the majority of traditional direct detections have poor sensitivities for light DM because of the small recoil energy. Thanks to the high energy cosmic rays (CRs), the light DM can be boosted by scattering with CRs and thus may be detected in the ongoing experiments. In this work, we derive the exclusion limits on the cosmic ray boosted sub-GeV DM with gravitational mediator from the Xenon1T data. It turns out that a sizable region of such a cosmic ray boosted DM can be excluded by the current data.

Don't Fish in Troubled Waters! Characterizing Coronavirus-themed Cryptocurrency Scams

As COVID-19 has been spreading across the world since early 2020, a growing number of malicious campaigns are capitalizing the topic of COVID-19. COVID-19 themed cryptocurrency scams are increasingly popular during the pandemic. However, these newly emerging scams are poorly understood by our community. In this paper, we present the first measurement study of COVID-19 themed cryptocurrency scams. We first create a comprehensive taxonomy of COVID-19 scams by manually analyzing the existing scams reported by users from online resources. Then, we propose a hybrid approach to perform the investigation by: 1) collecting reported scams in the wild; and 2) detecting undisclosed ones based on information collected from suspicious entities (e.g., domains, tweets, etc). We have collected 195 confirmed COVID-19 cryptocurrency scams in total, including 91 token scams, 19 giveaway scams, 9 blackmail scams, 14 crypto malware scams, 9 Ponzi scheme scams, and 53 donation scams. We then identified over 200 blockchain addresses associated with these scams, which lead to at least 330K US dollars in losses from 6,329 victims. For each type of scams, we further investigated the tricks and social engineering techniques they used. To facilitate future research, we have released all the well-labelled scams to the research community.

Time-Travel Investigation: Towards Building A Scalable Attack Detection Framework on Ethereum

As one of the representative blockchain platforms, Ethereum has attracted lots of attacks. Due to the existed financial loss, there is a pressing need to perform timely investigation and detect more attack instances. Though multiple systems have been proposed, they suffer from the scalability issue due to the following reasons. First, the tight coupling between malicious contract detection and blockchain data importing makes them infeasible to repeatedly detect different attacks. Second, the coarse-grained archive data makes them inefficient to replay transactions. Third, the separation between malicious contract detection and runtime state recovery consumes lots of storage. In this paper, we present the design of a scalable attack detection framework on Ethereum. It overcomes the scalability issue by saving the Ethereum state into a database and providing an efficient way to locate suspicious transactions. The saved state is fine-grained to support the replay of arbitrary transactions. The state is well-designed to avoid saving unnecessary state to optimize the storage consumption. We implement a prototype named EthScope and solve three technical challenges, i.e., incomplete Ethereum state, scalability, and extensibility. The performance evaluation shows that our system can solve the scalability issue, i.e., efficiently performing a large-scale analysis on billions of transactions, and a speedup of around 2,300x when replaying transactions. It also has lower storage consumption compared with existing systems. The result with three different types of information as inputs shows that our system can help an analyst understand attack behaviors and further detect more attacks. To engage the community, we will release our system and the dataset of detected attacks.

Machine learning based non-Newtonian fluid model with molecular fidelity

We introduce a machine-learning-based framework for constructing continuum non-Newtonian fluid dynamics model directly from a micro-scale description. Dumbbell polymer solutions are used as examples to demonstrate the essential ideas. To faithfully retain molecular fidelity, we establish a micro-macro correspondence via a set of encoders for the micro-scale polymer configurations and their macro-scale counterparts, a set of nonlinear conformation tensors. The dynamics of these conformation tensors can be derived from the micro-scale model and the relevant terms can be parametrized using machine learning. The final model named the deep non-Newtonian model (DeePN$^2$), takes the form of conventional non-Newtonian fluid dynamics models, with a new form of the objective tensor derivative. Both the formulation of the dynamic equation and the neural network representation rigorously preserve the rotational invariance, which ensures the admissibility of the constructed model. Numerical results demonstrate the accuracy of DeePN$^2$, where models based on empirical closures show limitations.

Asymptotic Analysis of Transport Equation in Bounded Domains

Consider neutron transport equations in 3D convex domains with in-flow boundary. We mainly study the asymptotic limits as the Knudsen number $ε\rightarrow 0^+$. Using Hilbert expansion, we rigorously justify that the solution of steady problem converges to that of the Laplace's equation, and the solution of unsteady problem converges to that of the heat equation. The proof relies on a detailed analysis on the boundary layer effect with geometric correction. This problem can be formulated in many different settings, and the above one is probably the most physically significant and most mathematically challenging. We have to utilize almost all methods and techniques we developed in a series of papers in the past decade, and bring novel ideas to treat the new complications. The difficulty mainly comes from three sources: 3D domain, boundary layer regularity, and time dependence. To fully solve this problem, we introduce several techniques: (1) boundary layer with geometric correction; (2) remainder estimates with $L^2-L^{2m}-L^{\infty}$ framework; boundary layer decomposition.

Asymptotic Analysis of Boltzmann Equation in Bounded Domains

Consider 3D Boltzmann equation in convex domains with diffusive-reflection boundary condition. We study the hydrodynamic limits as the Knudsen number and Strouhal number $ε\rightarrow 0^+$. Using the Hilbert expansion, we rigorously justify that the solution of stationary/evolutionary problem converges to that of the steady/unsteady Navier-Stokes-Fourier system. This is the first paper to justify the hydrodynamic limits of nonlinear Boltzmann equations with hard-sphere collision kernel in bounded domain in the $L^{\infty}$ sense. The proof relies on a novel analysis on the boundary layer effect with geometric correction. The difficulty mainly comes from three sources: 3D domain, boundary layer regularity, and time dependence. To fully solve this problem, we introduce several techniques: (1) boundary layer with geometric correction; (2) remainder estimates with $L^2-L^{6}-L^{\infty}$ framework. Keywords: boundary layer; Milne problem; geometric correction; remainder estimates.

Machine Learning from a Continuous Viewpoint

We present a continuous formulation of machine learning, as a problem in the calculus of variations and differential-integral equations, in the spirit of classical numerical analysis. We demonstrate that conventional machine learning models and algorithms, such as the random feature model, the two-layer neural network model and the residual neural network model, can all be recovered (in a scaled form) as particular discretizations of different continuous formulations. We also present examples of new models, such as the flow-based random feature model, and new algorithms, such as the smoothed particle method and spectral method, that arise naturally from this continuous formulation. We discuss how the issues of generalization error and implicit regularization can be studied under this framework.

Complexity Measures for Neural Networks with General Activation Functions Using Path-based Norms

A simple approach is proposed to obtain complexity controls for neural networks with general activation functions. The approach is motivated by approximating the general activation functions with one-dimensional ReLU networks, which reduces the problem to the complexity controls of ReLU networks. Specifically, we consider two-layer networks and deep residual networks, for which path-based norms are derived to control complexities. We also provide preliminary analyses of the function spaces induced by these norms and a priori estimates of the corresponding regularized estimators.

The Slow Deterioration of the Generalization Error of the Random Feature Model

The random feature model exhibits a kind of resonance behavior when the number of parameters is close to the training sample size. This behavior is characterized by the appearance of large generalization gap, and is due to the occurrence of very small eigenvalues for the associated Gram matrix. In this paper, we examine the dynamic behavior of the gradient descent algorithm in this regime. We show, both theoretically and experimentally, that there is a dynamic self-correction mechanism at work: The larger the eventual generalization gap, the slower it develops, both because of the small eigenvalues. This gives us ample time to stop the training process and obtain solutions with good generalization property.

Security Analysis of EOSIO Smart Contracts

The EOSIO blockchain, one of the representative Delegated Proof-of-Stake (DPoS) blockchain platforms, has grown rapidly recently. Meanwhile, a number of vulnerabilities and high-profile attacks against top EOSIO DApps and their smart contracts have also been discovered and observed in the wild, resulting in serious financial damages. Most of EOSIO's smart contracts are not open-sourced and they are typically compiled to WebAssembly (Wasm) bytecode, thus making it challenging to analyze and detect the presence of possible vulnerabilities. In this paper, we propose EOSAFE, the first static analysis framework that can be used to automatically detect vulnerabilities in EOSIO smart contracts at the bytecode level. Our framework includes a practical symbolic execution engine for Wasm, a customized library emulator for EOSIO smart contracts, and four heuristics-driven detectors to identify the presence of four most popular vulnerabilities in EOSIO smart contracts. Experiment results suggest that EOSAFE achieves promising results in detecting vulnerabilities, with an F1-measure of 98%. We have applied EOSAFE to all active 53,666 smart contracts in the ecosystem (as of November 15, 2019). Our results show that over 25% of the smart contracts are vulnerable. We further analyze possible exploitation attempts against these vulnerable smart contracts and identify 48 in-the-wild attacks (25 of them have been confirmed by DApp developers), resulting in financial loss of at least 1.7 million USD.

The Quenching-Activation Behavior of the Gradient Descent Dynamics for Two-layer Neural Network Models

A numerical and phenomenological study of the gradient descent (GD) algorithm for training two-layer neural network models is carried out for different parameter regimes when the target function can be accurately approximated by a relatively small number of neurons. It is found that for Xavier-like initialization, there are two distinctive phases in the dynamic behavior of GD in the under-parametrized regime: An early phase in which the GD dynamics follows closely that of the corresponding random feature model and the neurons are effectively quenched, followed by a late phase in which the neurons are divided into two groups: a group of a few "activated" neurons that dominate the dynamics and a group of background (or "quenched") neurons that support the continued activation and deactivation process. This neural network-like behavior is continued into the mildly over-parametrized regime, where it undergoes a transition to a random feature-like behavior. The quenching-activation process seems to provide a clear mechanism for "implicit regularization". This is qualitatively different from the dynamics associated with the "mean-field" scaling where all neurons participate equally and there does not appear to be qualitative changes when the network parameters are changed.

DEPOSafe: Demystifying the Fake Deposit Vulnerability in Ethereum Smart Contracts

Cryptocurrency has seen an explosive growth in recent years, thanks to the evolvement of blockchain technology and its economic ecosystem. Besides Bitcoin, thousands of cryptocurrencies have been distributed on blockchains, while hundreds of cryptocurrency exchanges are emerging to facilitate the trading of digital assets. At the same time, it also attracts the attentions of attackers. Fake deposit, as one of the most representative attacks (vulnerabilities) related to exchanges and tokens, has been frequently observed in the blockchain ecosystem, causing large financial losses. However, besides a few security reports, our community lacks of the understanding of this vulnerability, for example its scale and the impacts. In this paper, we take the first step to demystify the fake deposit vulnerability. Based on the essential patterns we have summarized, we implement DEPOSafe, an automated tool to detect and verify (exploit) the fake deposit vulnerability in ERC-20 smart contracts. DEPOSafe incorporates several key techniques including symbolic execution based static analysis and behavior modeling based dynamic verification. By applying DEPOSafe to 176,000 ERC-20 smart contracts, we have identified over 7,000 vulnerable contracts that may suffer from two types of attacks. Our findings demonstrate the urgency to identify and prevent the fake deposit vulnerability.

Bernstein-Sato ideals and hyperplane arrangements

We study the relation between zero loci of Bernstein-Sato ideals and roots of b-functions and obtain a criterion to guarantee that roots of b-functions of a reducible polynomial are determined by the zero locus of the associated Bernstein-Sato ideal. Applying the criterion together with a result of Maisonobe we prove that the set of roots of the b-function of a free hyperplane arrangement is determined by its intersection lattice. We also study the zero loci of Bernstein-Sato ideals and the associated relative characteristic cycles for arbitrary central hyperplane arrangements. We prove the multivariable n/d conjecture of Budur for complete factorizations of arbitrary hyperplane arrangements, which in turn proves the strong monodromy conjecture for the associated multivariable topological zeta functions.

Top quark as a probe of heavy Majorana neutrino at the LHC and future collider

Right-handed (RH) Majorana neutrinos play a crucial role in understanding the origin of neutrino mass, the nature of dark matter and the mechanism of matter-antimatter asymmetry. In this work, we investigate the observability of heavy Majorana neutrino through the top quark neutrinoless double beta decay process $t \to b \ell^+ \ell^+ j j$ at hadron colliders. By performing detector level simulation, we demonstrate that our method can give stronger limits on the light-heavy neutrino mixing parameters $|V_{eN, μN}|$ in the mass range of 15 GeV $< m_N <$ 80 GeV than other existing collider bounds.
