Griffiths singularity and magnetic phase diagram of La1-xCaxCoO3

Magnetic properties of La$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$CoO$_{3}$ (0.10 $\leq x\leq$ 0.25) are systemically studied in this work. All the samples exhibits the ferromagnetic state at low temperatures. However, their inverse low-field magnetic susceptibilities shows a sharply downward deviation from high-temperature Curie-Weiss paramagnetic behavior well above the ferromagnetic transition temperature ($T_C$), which indicates the presence of a ferromagnetic clustered state above $T_C$. A detailed analysis on the susceptibilities reveals that the short-range state in these Ca-doped samples can be well described as the Griffiths phase. This characteristic is quite different from those of the clustered states above $T_C$ recently reported in Sr- and Ba-doped cobaltites, which are non-Griffith-like. It is proposed that this difference possibly arises from the unique dependence of magnetic interactions among Co$^{3+}$ ions on the size of the dopant in the doped cobaltites. Based on these results, the magnetic diagram of the Ca-doped cobaltites is established.

Chirality control by electric field in periodically poled MgO-doped lithium niobate

We study the chirality of periodically poled MgO-doped lithium niobate (MgO:PPLN) by electro-optic (EO) effect. It shows that optical propagation is reciprocal in MgO:PPLN when quasi-phase-matching (QPM) condition is satisfied, which is similar to natural optical active material like quartz. The specific rotation of MgO:PPLN by EO effect is shown to be proportional to the transverse electric field, making large polarization rotation in optical active material with small size possible. We also demonstrate that the chirality of MgO:PPLN can be controlled by external electric field.

Ultra-Thin Double-Walled Carbon Nanotubes A Novel Nanocontainer for Preparing Atomic Wires

Double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs) with high graphitization have been synthesized by hydrogen arc discharge. The obtained DWCNTs have a narrow distribution of diameters of both the inner and outer tubes, and more than half of the DWCNTs have inner diameters in the range 0.6-1.0 nm. Field electron emission from a DWCNT cathode to an anode has been measured, and the emission current density of DWCNTs reached 1 A/cm2 at an applied field of about 4.3 V/μm. After high-temperature treatment of DWCNTs, long linear carbon chains (C-chains) can be grown inside the ultra-thin DWCNTs to form a novel C-chain@DWCNT nanostructure, showing that these ultra-thin DWCNTs are an appropriate nanocontainer for preparing truly one-dimensional nanostructures with one-atom-diameter.

Simulation of optical microfiber loop resonators for biochemical sensing

Based on the basic theory of the microfiber loop resonator, we exploit the application of microfiber loop resonators in biochemical sensing. We set up a reliable theoretical model and optimize the structural parameters of microfiber loop resonators including the radius of the microrfiber, the radius of the loop and the length of the coupling region for higher sensitivity, wider dynamic measurement range, and lower detection limit. To show the convincible and realizable sensing ability we perform the simulation of sensing an extreme small variation of ambient refractive index by employing a set of experimental datas as the parameters in the expression of intensity transmission coefficient, and the detection limit reaches to a varation of ambient refractive index of 10-5 refractive index unit(RIU). This has superiority over the exsiting evanescent field-based subwavelength-diameter optical fiber refractive index sensor.

Theoretical Predictions of Superconductivity in Alkali Metals under High Pressure

We calculated the superconductivity properties of alkali metals under high pressure using the results of band theory and the rigid-muffin-tin theory of Gaspari and Gyorffy. Our results suggest that at high pressures Lithium, Potassium, Rubidium and Cesium would be superconductors with transition temperatures approaching $5-20 K$. Our calculations also suggest that Sodium would not be a superconductor under high pressure even if compressed to less than half of its equilibrium volume. We found that the compression of the lattice strengthens the electron-phonon coupling through a delicately balanced increase of both the electronic and phononic components of this coupling. This increase of the electron-phonon coupling in Li is due to an enhancement of the $s$-$p$ channel of the interaction, while in the heavier elements the $p$-$d$ channel is the dominant component.

The Circumnuclear Star-forming Activities along the Hubble Sequence

In order to study the circumnuclear star-forming activity along the Hubble sequence, we cross-correlate the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 2 (SDSS DR2) with the Third Reference Catalog of Bright Galaxies (RC3) to derive a large sample of 1015 galaxies with both morphological and spectral information. Among these, 385 sources are classified as star-forming galaxies and the SDSS fibre covered the circumnuclear regions (0.2 $-$ 2.0 kpc). By using the spectral synthesis method to remove the contribution from the underlying old stellar population, we measure the emission lines fluxes accurately which are then used to estimate the star formation rates(SFRs). Our main findings are that: (1) Early-type spirals show much larger H$α$ luminosities and hence higher SFRs, they also suffer more extinctions than late-type ones. The equivalent widths (EWs) of H$α$ emission lines show the similar trend, however, the very late types (Sdm $\sim$ Irr) do have large fractions of high EWs. (2) We confirm that D$_n(4000)$ has strong correlation with the strengthes of metallic absorption lines (such as CN band, G band and Mg Ib). Both these lines and the Balmer absorption lines show interesting variations between Sbc to Sd type galaxies. (3) The bar structure tightly relates with the enhanced star forming activity, this effect is even more significant in the early-type spirals. But we should note that the bar structure is not a necessary or sufficient condition for galaxies to harbor circumnuclear star formations.

IC 225: a dwarf elliptical galaxy with a peculiar blue core

We present the discovery of a peculiar blue core in the elliptical galaxy IC 225 by using images and spectrum from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The outer parts of the surface brightness profiles of u-, g-, r-, i- and z-band SDSS images for IC 225 are well fitted with an exponential function. The fitting results show that IC 225 follows the same relations between the magnitude, scale length and central surface brightness for dwarf elliptical galaxies. Its absolute blue magnitude (M_B) is -17.14 mag, all of which suggest that IC 225 is a typical dwarf elliptical galaxy. The g-r color profile indicates a very blue core with a radius of 2 arcseconds, which is also clearly seen in the RGB image made of g-, r- and i-band SDSS images. The SDSS optical spectrum exhibits strong and very narrow nebular emission lines. The metal abundances derived by the standard methods, which are 12+log(O/H) = 8.98, log(N/O) = -0.77 and 12+log(S+/H+) = 6.76, turn out to be significantly higher than that predicted by the well-known luminosity-metallicity relation. After carefully inspecting the central region of IC 225, we find that there are two distinct nuclei, separated by 1.4 arcseconds, the off-nucleated one is even bluer than the nucleus of IC 225. The asymmetric line profiles of higher-order Balmer lines indicate that the emission lines are bluer shifted relative to the absorption lines, suggesting that the line emission arises from the off-center core, whose nature is a metal-rich Hii region. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first high-metallicity Hii region detected in a dwarf elliptical galaxy.

Elliptical Galaxies with Emission Lines from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey

We present the results of 11 elliptical galaxies with strong nebular emission lines during our study of star formation history along the Hubble sequence. After removing the dilution from the underlying old stellar populations by use of stellar population synthesis model, we derive the accurate fluxes of all emission lines for these objects, which are later classified with emission line ratios into one Seyfert 2, six LINERs and four HII galaxies. We also identify one HII galaxy (A1216+04) as a hitherto unknown Wolf-Rayet galaxy from the presence of the Wolf-Rayet broad bump at 4650 Å. We propose that the star-forming activities in elliptical galaxies are triggered by either galaxy-galaxy interaction or the merging of a small satellite/a massive star cluster, as already suggested by recent numerical simulations.

Quasi-spin Model for Macroscopic Quantum Tunnelling between Two Coupled Bose-Einstein Condensates

The macroscopic quantum tunneling between two coupled Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) (radio-frequency coupled two-component BECs or two BECs confined in a double-well potential) is mapped onto the tunneling of an uniaxial spin with an applied magnetic field. The tunneling exponent is calculated with an imaginary-time path-integral method. In the limit of low barrier, the dependence of tunneling exponent on the system parameters is obtained, and the crossover temperature from thermal regime to quantum regime is estimated. The detailed information about the tunnelling will give help to control population conversion between coupled BECs and realize quantum computation with coupled BECs.

Phase-Dependent Spontaneous Spin Polarization and Bifurcation Delay in Coupled Two-Component Bose-Einstein Condensates

The spontaneous spin polarization and bifurcation delay in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates coupled with laser or/and radio-frequency pulses are investigated. We find that the bifurcation and the spontaneous spin polarization are determined by both physical parameters and relative phase between two condensates. Through bifurcations, the system enters into the spontaneous spin polarization regime from the Rabi regime. We also find that bifurcation delay appears when the parameter is swept through a static bifurcation point. This bifurcation delay is responsible for metastability leading to hysteresis.

Calculations of the electron-phonon interaction in the alkali metals, Potassium and Rubidium, using the results of band theory and BCS theory-based techniques suggest that at high pressures K and Rb would be superconductors with transition temperatures approaching 10 K.

Conditional Spontaneous Spin Polarization and Bifurcation Delay in Coupled Two-Component Bose-Einstein Condensates

The spontaneous spin polarization and bifurcation delay in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates coupled with Raman pulses are investigated. We find that the bifurcation and the spontaneous spin polarization depend not only on the system parameters, but also on the relative phase between two components. Through bifurcations, the system enters into the spontaneous spin polarization regime from the Rabi regime. We also find that bifurcation delay appears when the parameter is swept through the static bifurcation point. This bifurcation delay is responsible for metastability leading to hysteresis. The area enclosed in the hysteresis loop increases with the sweeping rate of the parameter.

Classical calculation of high-order harmonic generation of atomic and molecular gases in intense laser fields

Based upon our previous works (Eur.Phys.J.D 6, 319(1999); Chin.Phys.Lett. 18, 236(2001)), we develop a classical approach to calculate the high-order harmonic generation of the laser driven atoms and molecules. The Coulomb singularities in the system have been removed by a regularization procedure. Action-angle variables have been used to generate the initial microcanonical distribution which satisfies the inversion symmetry of the system. The numerical simulation show, within a proper laser intensity, a harmonic plateau with only odd harmonics appears. At higher intensities, the spectra become noisier because of the existence of chaos. With further increase in laser intensity, ionization takes place, and the high-order harmonics disappear. Thus chaos introduces noise in the spectra, and ionization suppresses the harmonic generation, with the onset of the ionization follows the onset of chaos.

Chaotic atomic population oscillations between two coupled Bose-Einstein condensates with time-dependent asymmetric trap potential

We have investigated the chaotic atomic population oscillations between two coupled Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) with time-dependent asymmetric trap potential. In the perturbative regime, the population oscillations can be described by the Duffing equation, and the chaotic oscillations near the separatrix solution are analyzed. The sufficient-necessary conditions for stable oscillations depend on the physical parameters and initial conditions sensitively. The first-order necessary condition indicates that the Melnikov function is equal to zero, so the stable oscillations are Melnikov chaotic. For the ordinary parameters and initial conditions, the chaotic dynamics is simulated with numerical calculation. If the damping is absent, with the increasing of the trap asymmetry, the regular oscillations become chaotic gradually, the corresponding stroboscopic Poincare sections (SPS) vary from a single island to more islands, and then the chaotic sea. For the completely chaotic oscillations, the long-term localization disappears and the short-term localization can be changed from one of the BECs to the other through the route of Rabi oscillation. When there exists damping, the stationary chaos disappears, the transient chaos is a common phenomenon before regular stable frequency locked oscillations. And proper damping can keep localization long-lived.
