What Are You Looking at? Detecting Human Intention in Gaze based Human-Robot Interaction

In gaze based Human-Robot Interaction (HRI), it is important to determine the human intention for further interaction. The gaze intention is often modelled as fixation. However, when looking at an object, it is not natural and it is difficult to maintain the gaze fixating on one point for a long time. Saccades may happen while a human is still focusing on the object. The prediction of human intention will be lost during saccades. In addition, while the human intention is on object, the gazes may be located outside of the object bounding box due to different noise sources, which would cause false negative predictions. In this work, we propose a novel approach to detect whether a human is focusing on an object in HRI application. We determine the gaze intention by comparing the similarity between the hypothetic gazes on objects and the actual gazes. We use Earth Mover's Distance (EMD) to measure the similarity and 1 Nearest Neighbour to classify which object a human is looking at. Our experimental results indicate that, compare to fixation, our method can successfully determine the human intention even during saccadic eye movements and increase the classification accuracy with noisy gaze data. We also demonstrate that, in the interaction with a robot, the proposed approach can obtain a high accuracy of object selection within successful predictions.

High CO2-tolerance oxygen permeation dual-phase membranes Ce0.9Pr0.1O2-δ-Pr0.6Sr0.4Fe0.8Al0.2O3-δ

High stability and oxygen permeability are two prominent requirements for the oxygen transport membrane candidates used as industrialization. Herein, we report several composite membranes based on xwt.%Ce0.9Pr0.1O2(CPO)-(100-x)wt.%Pr0.6Sr0.4Fe0.8Al0.2O3(PSFAO) (x = 50, 60 and 75) prepared via a modified Pechini method. Oxygen permeability test reveals that the 60CPO-40PSFAO composition exhibits the highest oxygen permeability. The oxygen permeation flux through the optimal uncoated 0.33 mm-thickness 60CPO-40PSFAO composite can reach 1.03 mL cm-2 min-1 (over the general requirement value of 1 mL cm-2 min-1) in air/He atmosphere at 1000 °C. In situ XRD performance confirms the optimal 60CPO-40PSFAO sample shows excellent stability in CO2-containing atmospheres. The 60CPO-40PSFAO membrane still exhibits simultaneously excellent oxygen permeability and phase stability after operating for over 100 h at air/CO2 condition at 1000 °C, which further indicates that the 60CPO-40PSFAO composite is likely to be used for oxygen supply in CO2 capture

Two-Stream Adaptive Graph Convolutional Networks for Skeleton-Based Action Recognition

In skeleton-based action recognition, graph convolutional networks (GCNs), which model the human body skeletons as spatiotemporal graphs, have achieved remarkable performance. However, in existing GCN-based methods, the topology of the graph is set manually, and it is fixed over all layers and input samples. This may not be optimal for the hierarchical GCN and diverse samples in action recognition tasks. In addition, the second-order information (the lengths and directions of bones) of the skeleton data, which is naturally more informative and discriminative for action recognition, is rarely investigated in existing methods. In this work, we propose a novel two-stream adaptive graph convolutional network (2s-AGCN) for skeleton-based action recognition. The topology of the graph in our model can be either uniformly or individually learned by the BP algorithm in an end-to-end manner. This data-driven method increases the flexibility of the model for graph construction and brings more generality to adapt to various data samples. Moreover, a two-stream framework is proposed to model both the first-order and the second-order information simultaneously, which shows notable improvement for the recognition accuracy. Extensive experiments on the two large-scale datasets, NTU-RGBD and Kinetics-Skeleton, demonstrate that the performance of our model exceeds the state-of-the-art with a significant margin.

High-flux dual-phase percolation membrane for oxygen separation

A series of composites based on (100-x)wt.%Ce0.9Pr0.1O2-δ-xwt.%Pr0.6Ca0.4FeO3-δ (x = 25, 40 and 50) doped with the cheap and abundant alkaline earth metal Ca2+ at the A-site has been successfully designed and fabricated. The crystal structure, oxygen permeability, phase and CO2 stability were evaluated. The composition of 60wt.%Ce0.9Pr0.1O2-δ-40wt.%Pr0.6Ca0.4FeO3-δ(60CPO-40PCFO) possesses the highest oxygen permeability among three studied composites. At 1000 oC, the oxygen permeation fluxes through the 0.3 mm-thickness 60CPO-40PCFO membranes after porous La0.6Sr0.4CoO3-δ each to 1.00 mL cm-2 min-1 and 0.62 mL cm-2 min-1 under air/He and air/CO2 gradients, respectively. In situ XRD results demonstrated that the 60CPO-40PCFO sample displayed a perfect structural stability in air as well as CO2-containing atmosphere. Thus, low-cost, Co-free and Sr-free 60CPO-40PCFO has high CO2 stability and is economical and environmental friendly since the expensive and volatile element Co was replaced by Fe and Sr was waived since it easily forms carbonates.

Effects of Al content on the oxygen permeability through dual-phase membrane 60Ce$_{0.9}$Pr$_{0.1}$O$_{2-δ}$-40Pr$_{0.6}$Sr$_{0.4}$Fe$_{1-x}$Al$_x$O$_{3-δ}$

Ceramic dual-phase oxygen transport membranes with the composition of 60wt.% Ce0.9Pr0.1O2-δ-40wt.%Pr0.6Sr0.4Fe1-xAlxO3-δ (x = 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1.0) (60CPO-40PSF1-xAxO) based on 60Ce0.9Pr0.1O2-δ-40Pr0.6Sr0.4FeO3-δ doped Al was successfully synthesized through a modified Pechini method. Crystal structure, surface microtopography and oxygen permeability are investigated systematically. The cell parameters of perovskite phase first increased and then decreased with the increase of Al content, which is related to the radius of the Al3+ and the formation of impurity phase. As x ranges from 0.1 to 0.8, the oxygen permeability of the materials first increases and then decreases, and the maximum value of oxygen permeation rate for 60CPO-40PSF1-xAxO membranes with 0.4mm thickness at 1000 °C is 1.12 mL min-1 cm-2 when x = 0.4. XRD measurements revealed high temperature stability and CO2-tolerant property of the dual-phase composites. The partial replacement of Fe$^{3+}$/Fe$^{4+}$ by Al$^{3+}$ causes the material not only to exhibit good stability, but also to increase the oxygen permeability of the membranes.

The Unusual Suppression of Superconducting Transition Temperature in Double-Doping 2H-NbSe$_2$

2H-NbSe2 is one of the most widely researched transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) superconductors, which undergoes charge-density wave (CDW) transition at TCDW about 33 K and superconducting transition at Tc of 7.3 K. To explore the relation between its superconductivity and Fermi surface nesting, we combined S substitution with Cu intercalation in 2H-NbSe2 to make CuxNbSe2-ySy. Upon systematic substitution of S and intercalation of Cu ions into 2H-NbSe2, we found that when the Cu and S contents increases, the Tc decreases in CuxNbSe2-ySy. While at higher x and y values, Tc keeps a constant value near 2 K, which is not commonly observed for a layered TMD. For comparison, we found the simultaneous substitution of Nb by Cu and Se by S in CuxNb1-xSe2-ySy lowered the Tc substantially faster. We construct a superconducting phase diagrams for our double-doping compounds in contrast with the related single-ions doping systems.

Gaussian Mixture Marginal Distributions for Modelling Remaining Pipe Wall Thickness of Critical Water Mains in Non-Destructive Evaluation

Rapidly estimating the remaining wall thickness (RWT) is paramount for the non-destructive condition assessment evaluation of large critical metallic pipelines. A robotic vehicle with embedded magnetism-based sensors has been developed to traverse the inside of a pipeline and conduct inspections at the location of a break. However its sensing speed is constrained by the magnetic principle of operation, thus slowing down the overall operation in seeking dense RWT mapping. To ameliorate this drawback, this work proposes the partial scanning of the pipe and then employing Gaussian Processes (GPs) to infer RWT at the unseen pipe sections. Since GP prediction assumes to have normally distributed input data - which does correspond with real RWT measurements - Gaussian mixture (GM) models are proven in this work as fitting marginal distributions to effectively capture the probability of any RWT value in the inspected data. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is extensively validated from real-world data collected in collaboration with a water utility from a cast iron water main pipeline in Sydney, Australia.

Planning Gamification Strategies based on User Characteristics and DM: A Gender-based Case Study

Gamification frameworks can aid in gamification planning for education. Most frameworks, however, do not provide ways to select, relate or recommend how to use game elements, to gamify a certain educational task. Instead, most provide a "one-size-fits-all" approach covering all learners, without considering different user characteristics, such as gender. Therefore, this work aims to adopt a data-driven approach to provide a set of game element recommendations, based on user preferences, that could be used by teachers and instructors to gamify learning activities. We analysed data from a novel survey of 733 people (male=569 and female=164), collecting information about user preferences regarding game elements. Our results suggest that the most important rules were based on four (out of nineteen) types of game elements: Objectives, Levels, Progress and Choice. From the perspective of user gender, for the female sample, the most interesting rule associated Objectives with Progress, Badges and Information (confidence=0.97), whilst the most interesting rule for the male sample associated also Objectives with Progress, Renovation and Choice (confidence=0.94). These rules and our descriptive analysis provides recommendations on how game elements can be used in educational scenarios.

Fine-Grained Named Entity Recognition using ELMo and Wikidata

Fine-grained Named Entity Recognition is a task whereby we detect and classify entity mentions to a large set of types. These types can span diverse domains such as finance, healthcare, and politics. We observe that when the type set spans several domains the accuracy of the entity detection becomes a limitation for supervised learning models. The primary reason being the lack of datasets where entity boundaries are properly annotated, whilst covering a large spectrum of entity types. Furthermore, many named entity systems suffer when considering the categorization of fine grained entity types. Our work attempts to address these issues, in part, by combining state-of-the-art deep learning models (ELMo) with an expansive knowledge base (Wikidata). Using our framework, we cross-validate our model on the 112 fine-grained entity types based on the hierarchy given from the Wiki(gold) dataset.

Circularly polarized states spawning from bound states in the continuum

Bound states in the continuum in periodic photonic systems like photonic crystal slabs are proved to be accompanied by vortex polarization singularities on the photonic bands in the momentum space. The winding structures of polarization states not only widen the field of topological physics but also show great potential that such systems could be applied in polarization manipulating. In this work, we report the phenomenon that by in-plane inversion ($C_2$) symmetry breaking, pairs of circularly polarized states could spawn from the eliminated Bound states in the continuum. Along with the appearance of the circularly polarized states as the two poles of the Poincaré sphere together with linearly polarized states covering the equator, full coverage on the Poincaré sphere could be realized. As an application, ellipticity modulation of linear polarization is demonstrated in the visible frequency range. This phenomenon provides new degree of freedom in modulating polarization.

Templated direct growth of ultra-thin double-walled carbon nanotubes

Double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs) combined the advantages of multi-walled (MW-) and single-walled (SW-) CNTs can be obtained by transforming the precursors (e.g. fullerene, ferrocene) into thin inner CNTs inside SWCNTs as templates. However, this method is limited since the DWCNT yield is strongly influenced by the filling efficiency (depending on the type of the filled molecules), opening and cutting the SWCNTs, and the diameter of the host SWCNTs. Therefore, it cannot be applied to all types of SWCNT templates. Here we show a universal route to synthesize ultra-thin DWCNTs via making SWCNTs stable at high temperature in vacuum. This method applies to different types of SWCNTs including metallicity-sorted ones without using any precursors since the carbon sources were from the reconstructed SWCNTs and the residue carbons. The resulting DWCNTs are with high quality and the yield of inner tubes is comparable to/higher than that of the DWCNTs made from the transformation of ferrocene/fullerene peapods.

The Growth of New Extended Carbon Nanophases from Ferrocene Inside Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes

The Raman response of new structures grown after filling SWCNTs with ferrocene and transformation at moderate high temperatures is demonstrated to be very strong, even stronger than the response from the tubes. Transmission electron microscopy demonstrates that the new objects are flat and exhibit a structure similar to short fragments of nanoribbons. The growth process is controlled by two different activation energies for low and high transformation temperatures, respectively. Immediately after filling Raman pattern from a precursor molecule are detected. Two different types of nanoribbons were identified by selecting special laser energies for the Raman excitation. These ribbons have the signature of quaterrylene and terrylene, respectively.

Extraction of Linear Carbon Chains Unravels the Role of the Carbon Nanotube Host

Linear carbon chains (LCCs) have been shown to grow inside double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs) but isolating them from this hosting material represents one of the most challenging tasks towards applications. Herein we report the extraction and separation of LCCs inside single-wall carbon nanotubes (LCCs@SWCNTs) extracted from a double walled host LCCs@DWCNTs by applying a combined tip-ultrasonic and density gradient ultracentrifugation (DGU) process. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), optical absorption, and Raman spectroscopy show that not only short LCCs but clearly long LCCs (LLCCs) can be extracted and separated from the host. Moreover, the LLCCs can even be condensed by DGU. The Raman spectral frequency of LCCs remains almost unchanged regardless of the presence of the outer tube of the DWCNTs. This suggests that the major importance of the outer tubes is making the whole synthesis viable. We have also been able to observe the interaction between the LCCs and the inner tubes of DWCNTs, playing a major role in modifying the optical properties of LCCs. Our extraction method suggests the possibility towards the complete isolation of LCCs from CNTs.

MAD-GAN: Multivariate Anomaly Detection for Time Series Data with Generative Adversarial Networks

The prevalence of networked sensors and actuators in many real-world systems such as smart buildings, factories, power plants, and data centers generate substantial amounts of multivariate time series data for these systems. The rich sensor data can be continuously monitored for intrusion events through anomaly detection. However, conventional threshold-based anomaly detection methods are inadequate due to the dynamic complexities of these systems, while supervised machine learning methods are unable to exploit the large amounts of data due to the lack of labeled data. On the other hand, current unsupervised machine learning approaches have not fully exploited the spatial-temporal correlation and other dependencies amongst the multiple variables (sensors/actuators) in the system for detecting anomalies. In this work, we propose an unsupervised multivariate anomaly detection method based on Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs). Instead of treating each data stream independently, our proposed MAD-GAN framework considers the entire variable set concurrently to capture the latent interactions amongst the variables. We also fully exploit both the generator and discriminator produced by the GAN, using a novel anomaly score called DR-score to detect anomalies by discrimination and reconstruction. We have tested our proposed MAD-GAN using two recent datasets collected from real-world CPS: the Secure Water Treatment (SWaT) and the Water Distribution (WADI) datasets. Our experimental results showed that the proposed MAD-GAN is effective in reporting anomalies caused by various cyber-intrusions compared in these complex real-world systems.

Realizing data features by deep nets

This paper considers the power of deep neural networks (deep nets for short) in realizing data features. Based on refined covering number estimates, we find that, to realize some complex data features, deep nets can improve the performances of shallow neural networks (shallow nets for short) without requiring additional capacity costs. This verifies the advantage of deep nets in realizing complex features. On the other hand, to realize some simple data feature like the smoothness, we prove that, up to a logarithmic factor, the approximation rate of deep nets is asymptotically identical to that of shallow nets, provided that the depth is fixed. This exhibits a limitation of deep nets in realizing simple features.

Doping Induced Second Harmonic Generation in Centrosymmetric Graphene from Quadrupole Response

For centrosymmetric materials such as monolayer graphene, no optical second harmonic generation (SHG) is generally expected because it is forbidden under the electric-dipole approximation. Yet we observed a strong, doping induced SHG from graphene, with its highest strength comparable to the electric-dipole allowed SHG in non-centrosymmetric 2D materials. This novel SHG has the nature of an electric-quadrupole response, arising from the effective breaking of inversion symmetry by optical dressing with an in-plane photon wave vector. More remarkably, the SHG is widely tuned by carrier doping or chemical potential, being sharply enhanced at Fermi edge resonances, but vanishing at the charge neutral point that manifests the electron-hole symmetry of massless Dirac Fermions. The striking behavior in graphene, which should also arise in graphene-like Dirac materials, expands the scope of nonlinear optics, and holds the promise of novel optoelectronic and photonic applications.

Observation of optical states below light cone with compound lattices

For optical systems, states inside the light cone could be detected by far-field measurement, while those below the light cone are not detectable by far-field measurement. A new method for far-field detection has been developed for observing states below the light cone with compound lattices. The basic mechanism involved is that periodic weak scattering leads to band folding, making the states out of the light cone to occur inside. By using polarization-resolved momentum-space imaging spectroscopy the band structures and iso-frequency contours of plasmonic lattices with different dimensions and symmetries are experimentally mapped out, in good agreement with the simulation.
