Sparse Vector Recovery: Bernoulli-Gaussian Message Passing

Low-cost message passing (MP) algorithm has been recognized as a promising technique for sparse vector recovery. However, the existing MP algorithms either focus on mean square error (MSE) of the value recovery while ignoring the sparsity requirement, or support error rate (SER) of the sparse support (non-zero position) recovery while ignoring its value. A novel low-complexity Bernoulli-Gaussian MP (BGMP) is proposed to perform the value recovery as well as the support recovery. Particularly, in the proposed BGMP, support-related Bernoulli messages and value-related Gaussian messages are jointly processed and assist each other. In addition, a strict lower bound is developed for the MSE of BGMP via the genie-aided minimum mean-square-error (GA-MMSE) method. The GA-MMSE lower bound is shown to be tight in high signal-to-noise ratio. Numerical results are provided to verify the advantage of BGMP in terms of final MSE, SER and convergence speed.

Network Densification in 5G: From the Short-Range Communications Perspective

Besides advanced telecommunications techniques, the most prominent evolution of wireless networks is the densification of network deployment. In particular, the increasing access points/users density and reduced cell size significantly enhance spatial reuse, thereby improving network capacity. Nevertheless, does network ultra-densification and over-deployment always boost the performance of wireless networks? Since the distance from transmitters to receivers is greatly reduced in dense networks, signal is more likely to be propagated from long- to short-range region. Without considering short-range propagation features, conventional understanding of the impact of network densification becomes doubtful. With this regard, it is imperative to reconsider the pros and cons brought by network densification. In this article, we first discuss the short-range propagation features in densely deployed network and verify through experimental results the validity of the proposed short-range propagation model. Considering short-range propagation, we further explore the fundamental impact of network densification on network capacity, aided by which a concrete interpretation of ultra-densification is presented from the network capacity perspective. Meanwhile, as short-range propagation makes interference more complicated and difficult to handle, we discuss possible approaches to further enhance network capacity in ultra-dense wireless networks. Moreover, key challenges are presented to suggest future directions.

Ground-to-satellite quantum teleportation

An arbitrary unknown quantum state cannot be precisely measured or perfectly replicated. However, quantum teleportation allows faithful transfer of unknown quantum states from one object to another over long distance, without physical travelling of the object itself. Long-distance teleportation has been recognized as a fundamental element in protocols such as large-scale quantum networks and distributed quantum computation. However, the previous teleportation experiments between distant locations were limited to a distance on the order of 100 kilometers, due to photon loss in optical fibres or terrestrial free-space channels. An outstanding open challenge for a global-scale "quantum internet" is to significantly extend the range for teleportation. A promising solution to this problem is exploiting satellite platform and space-based link, which can conveniently connect two remote points on the Earth with greatly reduced channel loss because most of the photons' propagation path is in empty space. Here, we report the first quantum teleportation of independent single-photon qubits from a ground observatory to a low Earth orbit satellite - through an up-link channel - with a distance up to 1400 km. To optimize the link efficiency and overcome the atmospheric turbulence in the up-link, a series of techniques are developed, including a compact ultra-bright source of multi-photon entanglement, narrow beam divergence, high-bandwidth and high-accuracy acquiring, pointing, and tracking (APT). We demonstrate successful quantum teleportation for six input states in mutually unbiased bases with an average fidelity of 0.80+/-0.01, well above the classical limit. This work establishes the first ground-to-satellite up-link for faithful and ultra-long-distance quantum teleportation, an essential step toward global-scale quantum internet.

Hybrid Dirac Semimetal in CaAgBi Materials Family

Based on their formation mechanisms, Dirac points in three-dimensional systems can be classified as accidental or essential. The former can be further distinguished into type-I and type-II, depending on whether the Dirac cone spectrum is completely tipped over along certain direction. Here, we predict the coexistence of all three kinds of Dirac points in the low-energy band structure of CaAgBi-family materials with a stuffed Wurtzite structure. Two pairs of accidental Dirac points reside on the rotational axis, with one pair being type-I and the other pair type-II; while another essential Dirac point is pinned at the high symmetry point on the Brillouin zone boundary. Due to broken inversion symmetry, the band degeneracy around accidental Dirac points is completely lifted except along the rotational axis, which may enable the splitting of chiral carriers at a ballistic p-n junction with a double negative refraction effect. We clarify their symmetry protections, and find both the Dirac-cone and Fermi arc topological surface states.

Partial regularity of harmonic maps from a Riemannian manifold into a Lorentzian manifold

In this paper, we will study the partial regularity theorem for stationary harmonic maps from a Riemannian manifold into a Lorentzian manifold. For a weakly stationary harmonic map $(u,v)$ from a smooth bounded open domain $Ω\subset\R^m$ to a Lorentzian manifold with Dirichlet boundary condition, we prove that it is smooth outside a closed set whose $(m-2)$-dimension Hausdorff measure is zero. Moreover, if the target manifold $N$ does not admit any harmonic sphere $S^l$, $l=2,...,m-1$, we will show $(u,v)$ is smooth.

Tackling Diversity and Heterogeneity by Vertical Memory Management

Existing memory management mechanisms used in commodity computing machines typically adopt hardware based address interleaving and OS directed random memory allocation to service generic application requests. These conventional memory management mechanisms are challenged by contention at multiple memory levels, a daunting variety of workload behaviors, and an increasingly complicated memory hierarchy. Our ISCA-41 paper proposes vertical partitioning to eliminate shared resource contention at multiple levels in the memory hierarchy. Combined with horizontal memory management policies, our framework supports a flexible policy space for tackling diverse application needs in production environment and is suitable for future heterogeneous memory systems.

Memos: Revisiting Hybrid Memory Management in Modern Operating System

The emerging hybrid DRAM-NVM architecture is challenging the existing memory management mechanism in operating system. In this paper, we introduce memos, which can schedule memory resources over the entire memory hierarchy including cache, channels, main memory comprising DRAM and NVM simultaneously. Powered by our newly designed kernel-level monitoring module and page migration engine, memos can dynamically optimize the data placement at the memory hierarchy in terms of the on-line memory patterns, current resource utilization and feature of memory medium. Our experimental results show that memos can achieve high memory utilization, contributing to system throughput by 19.1% and QoS by 23.6% on average. Moreover, memos can reduce the NVM side memory latency by 3~83.3%, energy consumption by 25.1~99%, and benefit the NVM lifetime significantly (40X improvement on average).

Heterogeneous morphology and dynamics of polyelectrolyte brush condensates in trivalent counterion solution

Recent experiments have shown that trivalent ion, spermidine$^{3+}$, can provoke lateral microphase segregation in DNA brushes. Using molecular simulations and simple theoretical arguments, we explore the effects of trivalent counterions on polyelectrolyte brushes. At a proper range of grafting density, polymer size, and ion concentration, the brush polymers collapse heterogeneously into octopus-like surface micelles. Remarkably, the heterogeneity in brush morphology is maximized and the relaxation dynamics of chain and condensed ion are the slowest at the 1:3 stoichiometric concentration of trivalent ions to polyelectrolyte charge. A further increase of trivalent ion concentration conducive to a charge inversion elicits modest reswelling and homogenizes the morphology of brush condensate. Our study provides a new insight into the origin of the diversity in DNA organization in cell nuclei as well as the ion-dependent morphological variation in polyelectrolyte brush layer of biological membranes.

Large influence of capping layers on tunnel magnetoresistance in magnetic tunnel junctions

It has been reported in experiments that capping layers which enhance the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) of magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) induce great impact on the tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR). To explore the essential influence caused by capping layers, we carry out ab initio calculations on TMR in the X(001)|CoFe(001)|MgO(001)|CoFe(001)|X(001) MTJ, where X represents the capping layer material which can be tungsten, tantalum or hafnium. We report TMR in different MTJs and demonstrate that tungsten is an ideal candidate for a giant TMR ratio. The transmission spectrum in Brillouin zone is presented. It can be seen that in the parallel condition of MTJ, sharp transmission peaks appear in the minority-spin channel. This phenomenon is attributed to the resonant tunnel transmission effect and we explained it by the layer-resolved density of states (DOS). In order to explore transport properties in MTJs, the density of scattering states (DOSS) was studied from the point of band symmetry. It has been found that CoFe|tungsten interface blocks scattering states transmission in the anti-parallel condition. This work reports TMR and transport properties in MTJs with different capping layers, and proves that tungsten is a proper capping layer material, which would benefit the design and optimization of MTJs.

One-step green synthesis of graphene nanomesh by fluid-based method

A fluid-based method is demonstrated for preparing graphene nanomeshes (GNMs) directly from pristine graphite flakes by a one-step process. The high efficiency is attributed to the combination of fluid-assisted exfoliation and perforation of the graphene sheets. Atomic force microscopy shows that the as-produced GNMs are less than 1.5 nm thick. The total area of the pores within 1 um2 of the GNM sheet is estimated as ~0.15 um2 and the pore density as ~22 um-2, The yield of GNMs from pristine graphite powder and the power consumption for per gram GNM synthesis are evaluated as 5 wt% and 120 kWh, respectively. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, elemental analysis and Raman spectroscopy results indicate the purity of the GNMs and thus it is a green efficient method. The present work is expected to facilitate the production of GNMs in large scale.

A LSE and Sparse Message Passing-Based Channel Estimation for mmWave MIMO Systems

In this paper, we propose a novel channel estimation algorithm based on the Least Square Estimation (LSE) and Sparse Message Passing algorithm (SMP), which is of special interest for Millimeter Wave (mmWave) systems, since this algorithm can leverage the inherent sparseness of the mmWave channel. Our proposed algorithm will iteratively detect exact the location and the value of non-zero entries of sparse channel vector without its prior knowledge of distribution. The SMP is used to detect exact the location of non-zero entries of the channel vector, while the LSE is used for estimating its value at each iteration. Then, the analysis of the Cramer-Rao Lower Bound (CRLB) of our proposed algorithm is given. Numerical experiments show that our proposed algorithm has much better performance than the existing sparse estimators (e.g. LASSO), especially when mmWave systems have massive antennas at both the transmitters and receivers. In addition, we also find that our proposed algorithm converges to the CRLB of the genie-aided estimation of sparse channels in just a few turbo iterations.

Heat flow of extrinsic biharmonic maps from a four dimensional manifold with boundary

Let $(M,g)$ be a four dimensional compact Riemannian manifold with boundary and $(N,h)$ be a compact Riemannian manifold without boundary. We show the existence of a unique, global weak solution of the heat flow of extrinsic biharmonic maps from $M$ to $N$ under the Dirichlet boundary condition, which is regular with the exception of at most finitely many time slices. We also discuss the behavior of solution near the singular times. As an immediate application, we prove the existence of a smooth extrinsic biharmonic map from $M$ to $N$ under any Dirichlet boundary condition.

Gaussian Message Passing Iterative Detection for MIMO-NOMA Systems with Massive Access

This paper considers a low-complexity Gaussian Message Passing Iterative Detection (GMPID) algorithm for Multiple-Input Multiple-Output systems with Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (MIMO-NOMA), in which a base station with $N_r$ antennas serves $N_u$ sources simultaneously. Both $N_u$ and $N_r$ are very large numbers and we consider the cases that $N_u>N_r$. The GMPID is based on a fully connected loopy graph, which is well understood to be not convergent in some cases. The large-scale property of the MIMO-NOMA is used to simplify the convergence analysis. Firstly, we prove that the variances of the GMPID definitely converge to that of Minimum Mean Square Error (MMSE) detection. Secondly, two sufficient conditions that the means of the GMPID converge to a higher MSE than that of the MMSE detection are proposed. However, the means of the GMPID may still not converge when $ N_u/N_r< (\sqrt{2}-1)^{-2}$. Therefore, a new convergent SA-GMPID is proposed, which converges to the MMSE detection for any $N_u> N_r$ with a faster convergence speed. Finally, numerical results are provided to verify the validity of the proposed theoretical results.

Convergence Analysis and Assurance for Gaussian Message Passing Iterative Detector in Massive MU-MIMO Systems

This paper considers a low-complexity Gaussian Message Passing Iterative Detection (GMPID) algorithm for massive Multiuser Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MU-MIMO) system, in which a base station with $M$ antennas serves $K$ Gaussian sources simultaneously. Both $K$ and $M$ are very large numbers, and we consider the cases that $K<M$. The GMPID is a low-complexity message passing algorithm based on a fully connected loopy graph, which is well understood to be not convergent in some cases. As it is hard to analyse the GMPID directly, the large-scale property of the massive MU-MIMO is used to simplify the analysis. Firstly, we prove that the variances of the GMPID definitely converge to the mean square error of Minimum Mean Square Error (MMSE) detection. Secondly, we propose two sufficient conditions that the means of the GMPID converge to those of the MMSE detection. However, the means of GMPID may not converge when $ K/M\geq (\sqrt{2}-1)^2$. Therefore, a new convergent GMPID called SA-GMPID (scale-and-add GMPID) , which converges to the MMSE detection in mean and variance for any $K<M$ and has a faster convergence speed than the GMPID, but has no higher complexity than the GMPID, is proposed. Finally, numerical results are provided to verify the validity and accuracy of the theoretical results.

Modeling and Analysis of SCMA Enhanced D2D and Cellular Hybrid Network

Sparse code multiple access (SCMA) has been recently proposed for the future wireless networks, which allows non-orthogonal spectrum resource sharing and enables system overloading. In this paper, we apply SCMA into device-to-device (D2D) communication and cellular hybrid network, targeting at using the overload feature of SCMA to support massive device connectivity and expand network capacity. Particularly, we develop a stochastic geometry based framework to model and analyze SCMA, considering underlaid and overlaid mode. Based on the results, we analytically compare SCMA with orthogonal frequency-division multiple access (OFDMA) using area spectral efficiency (ASE) and quantify closed-form ASE gain of SCMA over OFDMA. Notably, it is shown that system ASE can be significantly improved using SCMA and the ASE gain scales linearly with the SCMA codeword dimension. Besides, we endow D2D users with an activated probability to balance cross-tier interference in the underlaid mode and derive the optimal activated probability. Meanwhile, we study resource allocation in the overlaid mode and obtain the optimal codebook allocation rule. It is interestingly found that the optimal SCMA codebook allocation rule is independent of cellular network parameters when cellular users are densely deployed. The results are helpful in the implementation of SCMA in the hybrid system.

Effect of Densification on Cellular Network Performance with Bounded Pathloss Model

In this paper, we investigate how network densification influences the performance of downlink cellular network in terms of coverage probability (CP) and area spectral efficiency (ASE). Instead of the simplified unbounded pathloss model (UPM), we apply a more realistic bounded pathloss model (BPM) to model the decay of signal power caused by pathloss. It is shown that network densification indeed degrades CP when the base station (BS) density $λ$ is sufficiently large. This is inconsistent with the result derived using UPM that CP is independent of $λ$. Moreover, we shed light on the impact of ultra-dense deployment of BSs on the ASE scaling law. Specifically, it is proved that the cellular network ASE scales with rate $λe^{-κλ}$, i.e., first increases with $λ$ and then diminishes to be zero as $λ$ goes to infinity.

A Semiparametric Joint Model for Terminal Trend of Quality of Life and Survival in Palliative Care Research

Palliative medicine is an interdisciplinary specialty focusing on improving quality of life (QOL) for patients with serious illness and their families. Palliative care programs are available or under development at over 80% of large US hospitals (300+ beds). Palliative care clinical trials present unique analytic challenges relative to evaluating the palliative care treatment efficacy which is to improve patients diminishing QOL as disease progresses towards end of life (EOL). A unique feature of palliative care clinical trials is that patients will experience decreasing QOL during the trial despite potentially beneficial treatment. Often longitudinal QOL and survival data are highly correlated which, in the face of censoring, makes it challenging to properly analyze and interpret longitudinal QOL trajectory. To address these issues, we propose a novel semiparametric statistical approach to jointly model longitudinal QOL and survival data. There are two sub-models in our approach: a semiparametric mixed effects model for longitudinal QOL and a Cox model for survival. We use regression splines method to estimate the nonparametric curves and AIC to select knots. We assess the model through simulation and application to establish a novel modeling approach that could be applied in future palliative care treatment research trials.

Contact statistics highlight distinct organizing principles of proteins and RNA

Although both RNA and proteins have densely packed native structures, chain organizations of these two biopolymers are fundamentally different. Motivated by the recent discoveries in chromatin folding that interphase chromosomes have territorial organization with signatures pointing to metastability, we analyzed the biomolecular structures deposited in the Protein Data Bank and found that the intrachain contact probabilities, $P(s)$ as a function of the arc length $s$, decay in power-law $\sim s^{-γ}$ over the intermediate range of $s$, $10\lesssim s\lesssim 110$. We found that the contact probability scaling exponent is $γ\approx 1.11$ for large RNA ($N>110$), $γ\approx 1.41$ for small sized RNA ($N<110$), and $γ\approx 1.65$ for proteins. Given that Gaussian statistics is expected for a fully equilibrated chain in polymer melts, the deviation of $γ$ value from $γ=1.5$ for the subchains of large RNA in the native state suggests that the chain configuration of RNA is not fully equilibrated. It is visually clear that folded structures of large sized RNA ($N\gtrsim 110$) adopt crumpled structures, partitioned into modular multi-domains assembled by proximal sequences along the chain, whereas the polypeptide chain of folded proteins looks better mixed with the rest of the structure. Our finding of $γ\approx 1$ for large RNA might be an ineluctable consequence of the hierarchical ordering of the secondary to tertiary elements in the folding process.
