The $B\to π\ellν_\ell$ semileptonic decay within the LCSR approach under heavy quark effective field theory

The heavy quark effective field theory (HQEFT) provides an effective way to deal with the heavy meson decays. In the paper, we adopt two different correlators to derive the light-cone sum rules of the $B \to π$ transition form factors (TFFs) within the framework of HQEFT. We label those two LCSR results as LCSR-${\cal U}$ and LCSR-${\cal R}$, which are for conventional correlator and right-handed correlator, respectively. We observe that the correlation parameter $|ρ_{\rm RU}|$ for the branching ratio ${\cal B}(B \to πl ν_{l})$ is $\sim 0.85$, implying the consistency of the LCSRs under different correlators. Moreover, we obtain $|V_{\rm ub}|_{{\rm LCSR}-{\cal U}}=(3.45^{+0.28}_{-0.20}\pm{0.13}_{\rm{exp}})\times10^{-3}$ and $|V_{\rm ub}|_{{\rm LCSR}-{\cal R}} =(3.38^{+0.22}_{-0.16} \pm{0.12}_{\rm{exp}})\times10^{-3}$. We then obtain $\mathcal{R}_π|_{{\rm LCSR}-{\cal U}}=0.68^{+0.10}_{-0.09}$ and $\mathcal{R}_π|_{{\rm LCSR}-{\cal R}}=0.65^{+0.13}_{-0.11}$, both of them agree with the Lattice QCD predictions. Thus the HQEFT provides a useful framework for studying the $B$ meson decays. Moreover, by using right-handed correlator, the twist-2 terms shall dominant the TFF $f^+(q^2)$, which approaches over $\sim97\%$ contribution in the whole $q^2$-region; and the large twist-3 uncertainty for the conventional correlator is greatly suppressed. One can thus adopt the LCSR-${\cal R}$ prediction to test the properties of the various models for the pion twist-2 distribution amplitudes.

Quantum efficiency enhancement of bialkali photocathodes by an atomically thin layer on substrates

We report quantum efficiency (QE) enhancements in accelerator technology relevant antimonide photocathodes (K2CsSb) by interfacing them with atomically thin two-dimensional (2D) crystal layers. The enhancement occurs in a reflection mode, when a 2D crystal is placed in between the photocathodes and optically reflective substrates. Specifically, the peak QE at 405 nm (3.1 eV) increases by a relative 10 percent, while the long wavelength response at 633 nm (2.0 eV) increases by a relative 36 percent on average and up to 80 percent at localized hot spot regions when photocathodes are deposited onto graphene coated stainless steel. There is a similar effect for photocathodes deposited on hexagonal boron nitride monolayer coatings using nickel substrates. The enhancement does not occur when reflective substrates are replaced with optically transparent sapphire. Optical transmission, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) revealed that thickness, crystal orientation, quality and elemental stoichiometry of photocathodes do not appreciably change due to 2D crystal coatings. These results suggest optical interactions are responsible for the QE enhancements when 2D crystal sublayers are present on reflective substrates, and provide a pathway toward a simple method of QE enhancement in semiconductor photocathodes by an atomically thin 2D crystal on substrates.

Proximal-Like Incremental Aggregated Gradient Method with Linear Convergence under Bregman Distance Growth Conditions

We introduce a unified algorithmic framework, called proximal-like incremental aggregated gradient (PLIAG) method, for minimizing the sum of a convex function that consists of additive relatively smooth convex components and a proper lower semi-continuous convex regularization function, over an abstract feasible set whose geometry can be captured by using the domain of a Legendre function. The PLIAG method includes many existing algorithms in the literature as special cases such as the proximal gradient method, the Bregman proximal gradient method (also called NoLips algorithm), the incremental aggregated gradient method, the incremental aggregated proximal method, and the proximal incremental aggregated gradient method. It also includes some novel interesting iteration schemes. First we show the PLIAG method is globally sublinearly convergent without requiring a growth condition, which extends the sublinear convergence result for the proximal gradient algorithm to incremental aggregated type first order methods. Then by embedding a so-called Bregman distance growth condition into a descent-type lemma to construct a special Lyapunov function, we show that the PLIAG method is globally linearly convergent in terms of both function values and Bregman distances to the optimal solution set, provided that the step size is not greater than some positive constant. These convergence results derived in this paper are all established beyond the standard assumptions in the literature (i.e., without requiring the strong convexity and the Lipschitz gradient continuity of the smooth part of the objective). When specialized to many existing algorithms, our results recover or supplement their convergence results under strictly weaker conditions.

Mechanical Properties of Formamidinium Halide Perovskites FABX3 (FA = CH(NH2)2; B = Pb, Sn; X = Br, I) From First-Principles

The mechanical properties of formamidinium halide perovskite FABX3(FA = CH(NH2)2; B = Pb, Sn; X = Br, I) were systematically investigated by using the first-principles calculations. Our results reveal that FABX3 perovskites possess excellent mechanical flexibility, ductility and strong anisotropy. It shows that the planar organic cation FA+ has an important effect on the mechanical properties of FABX3 perovskites. In addition, our results indicate that: (i) the moduli (bulk modulus B, Young's modulus E, and shear modulus G) of FABBr3 are larger than those of FABI3 for the same B atom and (ii) the moduli of FAPbX3 are larger than those of FASnX3 for the same halide atom. The reason of the two trends was demonstrated by carefully analyzing the bond strength between B and X atom based on the projected crystal orbital Hamilton population method.

Electronic Transport Evidence for Topological Nodal-Line Semimetals of ZrGeSe single crystals

Although the band topology of ZrGeSe has been studied via magnetic torque technique, the electronic transport behaviors related to the relativistic Fermions in ZrGeSe are still unknown. Here, we first report systematic electronic transport properties of high-quality ZrGeSe single crystals under magnetic fields up to 14 T. Resistivity plateaus of temperature dependent resistivity curves both in the presence and absence of magnetic fields as well as large, non-saturating magnetoresistance in low-temperature region were observed. By analyzing the temperature- and angular-dependent Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations and fitting it via the Lifshitz-Kosevich (LK) formula with the Berry phase being taken into account, we proved that Dirac fermions dominate the electronic transport behaviors of ZrGeSe and the presence of non-trivial Berry phase. First principles calculations demonstrate that ZrGeSe possesses Dirac bands and normal bands near Fermi surface, resulting in the observed magnetotransport phenomena. These results demonstrate that ZrGeSe is a topological nodal-line semimetal, which provides a fundamentally important platform to study the quantum physics of topological semimetals.

Production of doubly heavy baryons via Higgs boson decays

We systematically analyzed the production of semi-inclusive doubly heavy baryons ($Ξ_{cc}$, $Ξ_{bc}$ and $Ξ_{bb}$) for the process $H^0 \rightarrow Ξ_{QQ'}+ \bar {Q'} + \bar {Q}$ through four main Higgs decay channels within the framework of non-relativistic QCD. The contributions from the intermediate diquark states, $\langle cc\rangle[^{1}S_{0}]_{\mathbf{6}}$, $\langle cc\rangle[^{3}S_{1}]_{\mathbf{\bar 3}}$, $\langle bc\rangle[^{3}S_{1}]_{\mathbf{\bar 3}/ \mathbf{6}}$, $\langle bc\rangle[^{1}S_{0}]_{\mathbf{\bar 3}/ \mathbf{6}}$, $\langle bb\rangle[^{1}S_{0}]_{\mathbf{6}}$ and $\langle bb\rangle[^{3}S_{1}]_{\mathbf{\bar 3}}$, have been taken into consideration. The differential distributions and three main sources of the theoretical uncertainties have been discussed. At the High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider, there will be about 0.43$\times10^4$ events of $Ξ_{cc}$, 6.32$\times10^4$ events of $Ξ_{bc}$ and 0.28$\times10^4$ events of $Ξ_{bb}$ produced per year. There are fewer events produced at the Circular Electron Positron Collider and the International Linear Collider, about $0.26\times 10^{2}$ events of $Ξ_{cc}$, $3.83\times 10^{2}$ events of $Ξ_{bc}$ and $0.17\times 10^{2}$ events of $Ξ_{bb}$ in operation.

Extended PID Control of Nonlinear Uncertain Systems

Since the classical proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller is the most widely and successfully used ones in industrial processes, it is of vital importance to investigate theoretically the rationale of this ubiquitous controller in dealing with nonlinearity and uncertainty. Recently, we have investigated the capability of the classical PID control for second order nonlinear uncertain systems and provided some analytic design methods for the choices of PID parameters, where the system is assumed to be in the canonical form of cascade integrators. In this paper, we will consider the natural extension of the classical PID control for high order affine-nonlinear uncertain systems. In contrast to most of the literature on controller design of nonlinear systems, we do not require such special system structures as pure-feedback form, thanks to the strong robustness of the extend PID controller. To be specific, we will show that under some suitable conditions on nonlinearity and uncertainty of the systems, the extended PID controller can globally(or semi-globally) stabilize the nonlinear uncertain systems, and at the same time the regulation error converges to $0$ exponentially fast, as long as the control parameters are chosen from an open unbounded parameter manifold.

BUOCA: Budget-Optimized Crowd Worker Allocation

Due to concerns about human error in crowdsourcing, it is standard practice to collect labels for the same data point from multiple internet workers. We here show that the resulting budget can be used more effectively with a flexible worker assignment strategy that asks fewer workers to analyze easy-to-label data and more workers to analyze data that requires extra scrutiny. Our main contribution is to show how the allocations of the number of workers to a task can be computed optimally based on task features alone, without using worker profiles. Our target tasks are delineating cells in microscopy images and analyzing the sentiment toward the 2016 U.S. presidential candidates in tweets. We first propose an algorithm that computes budget-optimized crowd worker allocation (BUOCA). We next train a machine learning system (BUOCA-ML) that predicts an optimal number of crowd workers needed to maximize the accuracy of the labeling. We show that the computed allocation can yield large savings in the crowdsourcing budget (up to 49 percent points) while maintaining labeling accuracy. Finally, we envisage a human-machine system for performing budget-optimized data analysis at a scale beyond the feasibility of crowdsourcing.

Production of semi-inclusive doubly heavy baryons via top-quark decays

In the paper, we present a detailed discussion on the semi-inclusive production of doubly heavy baryons ($Ξ_{bc}$ and $Ξ_{bb}$) through top-quark decay channel, $t\rightarrow Ξ_{bQ^{\prime}}+ \bar {Q^{\prime}} + W^+ $, within the framework of non-relativistic QCD (NRQCD). In our calculations, the contributions from the intermediate diquark states, $\langle bc\rangle[^{3}S_{1}]_{\mathbf{\bar 3}/ \mathbf{6}}$, $\langle bc\rangle[^{1}S_{0}]_{\mathbf{\bar 3}/ \mathbf{6}}$, $\langle bb\rangle[^{1}S_{0}]_{\mathbf{6}}$ and $\langle bb\rangle[^{3}S_{1}]_{\mathbf{\bar 3}}$, have been taken into consideration. Main uncertainties from the heavy quark mass $(m_c,~m_b~\mbox{or}~m_t)$, the renormalization scale $μ_r$, and the nonperturbative transition probability have been estimated. For a comparison, we also analyze the production of doubly heavy baryons under the approximate fragmentation function approach. Estimated at the LHC or a High Luminosity LHC with $\mathcal{L}$ =$10^{34-36}~\rm{cm}^{-2}~\rm{s}^{-1}$, there will be about $2.25\times10^{4-6}$ events of $Ξ_{bc}$ and $9.49\times10^{2-4}$ events of $Ξ_{bb}$ produced in one operation year through top-quark decays.

$HZ$ associated production with decay in the Alternative Left-Right Model at CEPC and future linear colliders

In this study, Higgs and Z boson associated production with subsequent decay is attempted in the framework of alternative left-right model, which is motivated by superstring-inspired $E_6$ model at CEPC and future linear colliders. We systematically analyze each decay channel of Higgs with theoretical constraints and latest experimental methods. Due to the mixing of scalars in the Higgs sector, charged Higgs bosons can play an essential role in the phenomenological analysis of this process. Even though the predictions of this model for the signal strengths of this process are close to the standard model expectations, it can be distinct under high luminosity.

Heavy quarkonium production through the top quark rare decays via the channels involving flavor changing neutral currents

In the paper, we discuss the possibility of observation of heavy quarkoniums via the processes involving flavor changing neutral currents (FCNC). More explicitly, we systematically calculate the production of heavy charmonium and $(c\bar{b})$-quarkonium through the top quark semi-exclusive rare FCNC decays in the framework of the non-relativistic QCD (NRQCD) factorization theory. Our results show that the total decay widths $Γ_{t\to η_c} =1.20^{+1.04+1.14}_{-0.51-0.45}\times 10^{-16}$ GeV, $Γ_{t\to J/ψ} =1.37^{+1.03+1.30}_{-0.51-0.51}\times 10^{-16}$ GeV, $Γ_{t\to B_c}=2.06^{+0.17+0.91}_{-0.17-0.54}\times 10^{-18}$ GeV, and $Γ_{t\to B^*_c}=6.27^{+0.63+2.78}_{-0.62-1.64}\times 10^{-18}$ GeV, where the uncertainties are from variation of quark masses and renormalization scales. Even though the decay widths are small, it is important to make a systematic study on the production of charmonium and $(c\bar{b})$-quarkonium through the top-quark decays via FCNC in the Standard Model, which will provide useful guidance for future new physics research from the heavy quarkonium involved processes.

Assay of low-background stainless steel by smelting for the neutrino experiment at Jinping

To ensure compliance with the experimental requirement for ultra-low background, in this study the radioactivity of stainless steels manufactured by smelting is thoroughly investigated. Raw materials, stage samples, and commercial samples are investigated by glow discharge mass spectrometry (GDMS) and/or with high-purity germanium detectors (HPGe) at both the ground level and/or the China Jinping Underground Laboratory. Custom-made stainless steel samples are found to have radioactivity levels comparable to those in other low-background experiments. The comprehensive results regarding the radioactivity level in materials to be used in the proposed Jinping Neutrino Experiment are reported.

Extraction of $t$-slopes from experimental $γp\rightarrow K^+Λ$ and $γp\rightarrow K^+Σ_0$ cross section data

We analyze recent $K^+$ meson photoproduction data from the CLAS collaboration for the reactions $γp\rightarrow K^+Λ$ and $γp\rightarrow K^+Σ_0$, fitting measured forward-angle differential cross sections to the form $Ae^{Bt}$. We develop a quantitative scheme for determining the kinematic region where the fit is to be done, and, from the extracted $t$-slope $B$, determine whether single-Reggeon exchange can explain the production mechanism. We find that, in the region $5 < s < 8.1$ GeV$^2$, production of the $K^+Λ$ channel can be explained by single $K^+$ Reggeon exchange, but the $K^+Σ_0$ production channel cannot. We verify these conclusions by fitting the data to a differential cross section produced by the interfering sum of two exponential amplitudes.

Dynamic Allocation of Crowd Contributions for Sentiment Analysis during the 2016 U.S. Presidential Election

Opinions about the 2016 U.S. Presidential Candidates have been expressed in millions of tweets that are challenging to analyze automatically. Crowdsourcing the analysis of political tweets effectively is also difficult, due to large inter-rater disagreements when sarcasm is involved. Each tweet is typically analyzed by a fixed number of workers and majority voting. We here propose a crowdsourcing framework that instead uses a dynamic allocation of the number of workers. We explore two dynamic-allocation methods: (1) The number of workers queried to label a tweet is computed offline based on the predicted difficulty of discerning the sentiment of a particular tweet. (2) The number of crowd workers is determined online, during an iterative crowd sourcing process, based on inter-rater agreements between labels. We applied our approach to 1,000 twitter messages about the four U.S. presidential candidates Clinton, Cruz, Sanders, and Trump, collected during February 2016. We implemented the two proposed methods using decision trees that allocate more crowd efforts to tweets predicted to be sarcastic. We show that our framework outperforms the traditional static allocation scheme. It collects opinion labels from the crowd at a much lower cost while maintaining labeling accuracy.

Necessary Optimality Conditions and Exact Penalization for Non-Lipschitz Nonlinear Programs

When the objective function is not locally Lipschitz, constraint qualifications are no longer sufficient for Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) conditions to hold at a local minimizer, let alone ensuring an exact penalization. In this paper, we extend quasi-normality and relaxed constant positive linear dependence (RCPLD) condition to allow the non-Lipschitzness of the objective function and show that they are sufficient for KKT conditions to be necessary for optimality. Moreover, we derive exact penalization results for the following two special cases. When the non-Lipschitz term in the objective function is the sum of a composite function of a separable lower semi-continuous function with a continuous function and an indicator function of a closed subset, we show that a local minimizer of our problem is also a local minimizer of an exact penalization problem under a local error bound condition for a restricted constraint region and a suitable assumption on the outer separable function. When the non-Lipschitz term is the sum of a continuous function and an indicator function of a closed subset, we also show that our problem admits an exact penalization under an extended quasi-normality involving the coderivative of the continuous function.

On the Capability of PID Control for Nonlinear Uncertain Systems

It is well-known that the classical PID controller is by far the most widely used ones in industrial processes, despite of the remarkable progresses of the modern control theory over the past half a century. It is also true that the existing theoretical studies on PID control mainly focus on linear systems, although most of the practical control systems are inherently nonlinear with uncertainties. Thus, a natural question is: can we establish a theory on PID controller for nonlinear uncertain dynamical systems? This paper will initiate an investigation on this fundamental problem, showing that any second order uncertain nonlinear dynamical systems can be stabilized globally by the PID controller as long as the nonlinearity satisfies a Lipschitz condition. We will also demonstrate that this result can be generalized neither to systems with order higher than 2, and nor to systems with nonlinear growth rate faster than linear in general.

Letter of Intent: Jinping Neutrino Experiment

Jinping Neutrino Experiment (Jinping) is proposed to significantly improve measurements on solar neutrinos and geoneutrinos in China Jinping Laboratory - a lab with a number of unparalleled features, thickest overburden, lowest reactor neutrino background, etc., which identify it as the world-best low-energy neutrino laboratory. The proposed experiment will have target mass of 4 kilotons of liquid scintillator or water-based liquid scintillator, with a fiducial mass of 2 kilotons for neutrino-electron scattering events and 3 kilotons for inverse-beta interaction events. A number of initial sensitivities studies have been carried out, including on the transition phase for the solar neutrinos oscillation from the vacuum to the matter effect, the discovery of solar neutrinos from the carbon-nitrogen-oxygen (CNO) cycle, the resolution of the high and low metallicity hypotheses, and the unambiguous separation on U and Th cascade decays from the dominant crustal anti-electron neutrinos in China.

Re-enabling high-speed caching for LSM-trees

LSM-tree has been widely used in cloud computing systems by Google, Facebook, and Amazon, to achieve high performance for write-intensive workloads. However, in LSM-tree, random key-value queries can experience long latency and low throughput due to the interference from the compaction, a basic operation in the algorithm, to caching. LSM-tree relies on frequent compaction operations to merge data into a sorted structure. After a compaction, the original data are reorganized and written to other locations on the disk. As a result, the cached data are invalidated since their referencing addresses are changed, causing serious performance degradations. We propose dLSM in order to re-enable high-speed caching during intensive writes. dLSM is an LSM-tree with a compaction buffer on the disk, working as a cushion to minimize the cache invalidation caused by compactions. The compaction buffer maintains a series of snapshots of the frequently compacted data, which represent a consistent view of the corresponding data in the underlying LSM-tree. Being updated in a much lower rate than that of compactions, data in the compaction buffer are almost stationary. In dLSM, an object is referenced by the disk address of the corresponding block either in the compaction buffer for frequently compacted data, or in the underlying LSM-tree for infrequently compacted data. Thus, hot objects can be effectively kept in the cache without harmful invalidations. With the help of a small on-disk compaction buffer, dLSM achieves a high query performance by enabling effective caching, while retaining all merits of LSM-tree for write-intensive data processing. We have implemented dLSM based on LevelDB. Our evaluations show that with a standard DRAM cache, dLSM can achieve 5--8x performance improvement over LSM with the same cache on HDD storage.
