The Devil Went Down to de Sitter: Divergent Effective Field Theory Expansions in Cosmology

Effective field theories (EFTs) in de Sitter space, and in accelerating cosmologies more generally, must capture phenomena absent in flat space, most notably long-range correlations generated by spontaneous particle production. When heavy physics is integrated out in such time-dependent backgrounds, these effects leave an imprint on the EFT expansion: even at tree level, this is generically an asymptotic rather than convergent series. This is not a failure of EFT. The large-order behavior of the expansion coefficients encodes physical information inaccessible at any finite order, so cosmological EFTs contain hidden data. Using resurgence analysis, we show how this information can be systematically extracted to recover exact and non-perturbative predictions from the perturbative expansion. In the example we study, the resurgent completion is naturally organized in terms of the de Sitter $S$-matrix. This leads us to conjecture a prescription for extracting $S$-matrix data from cosmological EFTs in general. The framework extends to any setting where particle production, or a similar non-perturbative phenomenon, renders the EFT expansion asymptotic. A longer companion paper will provide a more detailed and pedagogical treatment.

Topological modes, non-locality and the double copy

The double copy connects scattering amplitudes and other objects in gauge and gravity theories. Open conceptual issues include whether non-local information in gravity theories can be generated from the double copy, and how the double copy should be practically implemented in unseen cases. In this paper, we consider topological theories (with and without mass) in 2+1 dimensions, and argue that this makes a useful playground for exploring non-locality. In particular, topological modes of the gauge field arise, themselves associated with non-trivial global behaviour, and it is not clear {\it a priori} how to double copy them. We settle this issue, and clarify the role of BCJ shifts in modifying how topological modes contribute. We show how our conclusions apply to four- and five-point scattering amplitudes in topological gauge / gravity theories, as a by-product obtaining greatly simplified analytic expressions for the four-point amplitudes.

Supersymmetric Massive Gravity

We initiate a systematic study of the self-interactions of a massive spin-2 "graviton" consistent with up to $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetry. Using a recently developed massive on-shell superspace formalism, we construct the most general set of cubic massive graviton amplitudes in a form with all supersymmetry and Lorentz invariance manifest. We find that for $\mathcal{N}\geq 3$ supersymmetry, the family of consistent interactions coincide with those of the ghost-free dRGT model. For $\mathcal{N}=4$ (maximal) supersymmetry there is a single consistent cubic interaction which coincides with the unique structure required for the absence of asymptotic superluminality. Additionally, we discuss the structure of interactions in the high-energy limit, connections to supersymmetric Galileons and the possibility of a supersymmetric massive double copy.

Shift Symmetries and AdS/CFT

Massive fields on anti-de Sitter (AdS) space enjoy galileon-like shift symmetries at particular values of their masses. We explore how these shift symmetries are realized through the boundary conformal field theory (CFT), at the level of the 2-point functions. In the alternate quantization scheme in which the dual conformal field gets the smaller $Δ_-$ conformal dimension, the shift symmetry is realized as a gauge symmetry in the dual CFT, so that only shift invariant operators are true conformal primary fields. In the standard quantization scheme the shift symmetry acts on the source, leading to Ward identities that take the form of integral constraints.

Positivity bounds in vector theories

Assuming unitarity, locality, causality, and Lorentz invariance of the, otherwise unknown, UV completion, we derive a new set of constraints on the effective field theory coefficients for the most general, ghost-free Generalized Proca and Proca Nuevo massive vector models. For the Generalized Proca model, we include new interactions that had not been previously considered in the context of positivity bounds and find these additional terms lead to a widened parameter space for the previously considered interactions. Although, the Generalized Proca and Proca Nuevo models are inequivalent, we find interesting analogues between the coefficients parameterizing the two models and the roles they play in the positivity bounds.
