Active Disturbance Rejection for Boundary Control Systems

We consider stabilisation of abstract boundary control systems and controlled partial differential equations with general unknown input disturbances and unmodeled nonlinearities at the input. We utilise the active disturbance rejection control approach to design a controller which rejects the input disturbance and achieves stability and external well-posedness of the closed-loop system for a class of boundary control systems with collocated inputs and outputs. We apply our main results to design controllers for one-dimensional wave and heat equations.

Dynamic Stabilisation of Boundary Control Systems

We design observer-based controllers to stabilise abstract linear boundary control systems on Hilbert spaces. Our main results introduce conditions for exponential, strong, and polynomial stability, and establish external well-posedness of the closed-loop system. We design controllers for a one-dimensional wave equation, a two-dimensional wave equation with distributed control and observation, and a non-uniform SCOLE model.

Optimal energy decay rates for Klein-Gordon equations with Kelvin-Voigt damping

We study the long-time behaviour of solutions to a one-dimensional linear Klein-Gordon equation with Kelvin-Voigt damping. One of the interesting features of the equation is that the generator of the associated $C_0$-semigroup has multiple spectral points on the imaginary axis. As our main result, we show that the energy of every possible solution converges to zero as time goes to infinity and, moreover, we provide an optimal polynomial energy decay rate for a certain class of solutions.

Funnel control for passive infinite-dimensional systems

We consider funnel control for linear infinite-dimensional systems that are impedance passive, meaning that they satisfy an energy balance in which the stored energy equals the squared norm of the state and the supplied power is the inner product of input and output. For the analysis we employ the system node approach, which offers a unified framework for infinite-dimensional systems with boundary and distributed control and observation. The resulting closed-loop dynamics are governed by a nonlinear evolution equation; we establish its solvability and hence the applicability of funnel control to this class. The applicability is illustrated by an Euler-Bernoulli beam, which is studied in two distinct scenarios: once with boundary control and once with distributed control.

Polynomial Stability of Non-Linearly Damped Contraction Semigroups

We investigate the stability properties of an abstract class of semi-linear systems. Our main result establishes rational rates of decay for classical solutions assuming a certain non-uniform observability estimate for the linear part and suitable conditions on the non-linearity. We illustrate the strength of our abstract results by applying them to a one-dimensional wave equation with weak non-linear damping and to an Euler-Bernoulli beam with a tip mass subject to non-linear damping.

Output Regulation for Impedance Passive Systems with Input Saturation

We consider output tracking and disturbance rejection for abstract infinite-dimensional systems with input saturation. We solve the control problem using a control law which consists of a stabilising error feedback term and a feedforward term based on the reference and disturbance signals. We use our results to design control laws for output tracking and disturbance rejection for a two-dimensional heat equation and a one-dimensional wave equation with boundary control and observation.

Projected integral control of impedance passive nonlinear systems

We propose an abstract framework for solving the constrained set-point tracking problem for impedance passive infinite-dimensional nonlinear systems. The class of systems considered is governed by monotone differential inclusions and allows us to exploit the theory of contraction semigroups. To account for possible operational constraints, e.g., bounds on the input, we replace a classical integral controller with a projected integral controller. This guarantees that the integrator state remains in a given closed convex set, where said constraints are satisfied. We showcase our results through three case studies.

Polynomial stability of wind turbine tower models

We investigate the stabilization of mathematical models describing the structural dynamics of monopile wind turbine towers. In the fore-aft plane, we show that the system becomes polynomially stable with an energy decay rate of $t^{-1}$ under static output feedback that relies on the velocity and/or angular velocity of the nacelle. Additionally, we prove that a tuned mass damper (TMD) in the nacelle ensures polynomial stability with the same energy decay rate, offering a viable alternative to active control. For the side-to-side plane, we analyze a model incorporating a hydraulic power transmission system and prove that feedback from the nacelle's angular velocity and the generator load torque leads to polynomial stability of the system.

Well-Posedness and Stability of Infinite-Dimensional Systems Under Monotone Feedback

We study the well-posedness and stability of an impedance passive infinite-dimensional linear system under nonlinear feedback of the form $u(t)=\phi(v(t)-y(t))$, where $\phi$ is a monotone function. Our first main result introduces conditions guaranteeing the existence of classical and generalised solutions in a situation where the original linear system is well-posed. In the absence of the external input $v$ we establish the existence of strong and generalised solutions under strictly weaker conditions. Finally, we introduce conditions guaranteeing that the origin is a globally asymptotically stable equilibrium point of the closed-loop system. Motivated by the analysis of partial differential equations with nonlinear boundary conditions, we use our results to investigate the well-posedness and stablility of abstract boundary control systems, port-Hamiltonian systems, a Timoshenko beam model, and a two-dimensional boundary controlled heat equation.

Admissibility theory in abstract Sobolev scales and transfer function growth at high frequencies

For strongly continous semigroups on Hilbert spaces, we investigate admissibility properties of control and observation operators shifted along continuous scales of spaces built by means of either interpolation and extrapolation or functional calculus. Our results show equivalence of admissibility in, on the one hand, a fractional domain of the generator and, on the other hand, a (different, in general) quadratic interpolation space of the same "Sobolev order". Furthermore, such properties imply quantified resolvent bounds in the original state space topology. When the semigroup is a group, the resulting frequency-domain estimates are in fact equivalent to the aforementioned time-domain properties. In the case of systems with both control and observation, we are able to translate input-output regularity properties into high-frequency growth rates of operator-valued transfer functions. As an application, based on results by Lasiecka, Triggiani and Tataru on interior and boundary regularity of the wave equation under Neumann control, we derive optimal asymptotics for the Neumann-to-Dirichlet wave transfer function. With that in hand, we establish non-uniform energy decay rates for the wave equation posed in a rectangle and subject to Neumann damping on an arbitrary open subset of the boundary.

A non-uniform Datko-Pazy theorem for bounded operator semigroups

We present a non-uniform analogue of the classical Datko-Pazy theorem. Our main result shows that an integrability condition imposed on orbits originating in a fractional domain of the generator (as opposed to all orbits) implies polynomial stability of a bounded $C_0$-semigroup. As an application of this result we establish polynomial stability of a semigroup under a certain non-uniform Lyapunov-type condition. We moreover give a new proof, under slightly weaker assumptions, of a recent result deducing polynomial stability from a certain non-uniform observability condition.

Polynomial stability of a coupled wave-heat network

We study the long-time asymptotic behaviour of a topologically non-trivial network of wave and heat equations. By analysing the simpler wave and the heat networks separately, and then applying recent results for abstract coupled systems, we establish energy decay at the rate $t^{-4}$ as $t\to\infty$ for all classical solutions.

Limit-case admissibility for positive infinite-dimensional systems

In the context of positive infinite-dimensional linear systems, we systematically study $L^p$-admissible control and observation operators with respect to the limit-cases $p=\infty$ and $p=1$, respectively. This requires an in-depth understanding of the order structure on the extrapolation space $X_{-1}$, which we provide. These properties of $X_{-1}$ also enable us to discuss when zero-class admissibility is automatic. While those limit-cases are the weakest form of admissibility on the $L^p$-scale, it is remarkable that they sometimes follow from order theoretic and geometric assumptions. Our assumptions on the geometries of the involved spaces are minimal.

Stability of abstract coupled systems

We study stability of abstract differential equations coupled by means of a general algebraic condition. Our approach is based on techniques from operator theory and systems theory, and it allows us to study coupled systems by exploiting properties of the components, which are typically much simpler to analyse. As our main results we establish resolvent estimates and decay rates for abstract boundary-coupled systems. We illustrate the power of the general results by using them to obtain rates of energy decay in coupled systems of one-dimensional wave and heat equations, and in a wave equation with an acoustic boundary condition.

Weakly elliptic damping gives sharp decay

We prove that weakly elliptic damping gives sharp energy decay for the abstract damped wave semigroup, where the damping is not in the functional calculus. In this case, there is no overdamping. We show applications in linearised water waves and Kelvin--Voigt damping.

On forwarding techniques for stabilization and set-point output regulation of semilinear infinite-dimensional systems

A stabilizer based on the forwarding technique is proposed for semilinear infinite-dimensional systems in cascade form. Sufficient conditions for local exponentially stability and global asymptotic stability of the closed-loop are derived. Results for the problem of local set-point output regulation are also obtained. Finally, an application to a system consisting of a flexible beam attached to a rotating joint is proposed.

Robust Controllers for a Flexible Satellite Model

We consider a PDE-ODE model of a flexible satellite that is composed of two identical flexible solar panels and a center rigid body. We prove that the satellite model is exponentially stable in the sense that the energy of the solutions decays to zero exponentially. In addition, we construct two internal model based controllers, a passive controller and an observer based controller, such that the linear and angular velocities of the center rigid body converge to the given sinusoidal signals asymptotically. A numerical simulation is presented to compare the performances of the two controllers.

On Robust Regulation of PDEs: from Abstract Methods to PDE Controllers

In this paper we study robust output tracking and disturbance rejection of linear partial differential equation (PDE) models. We focus on demonstrating how the abstract internal model based controller design methods developed for "regular linear systems" can be utilised in controller design for concrete PDE systems. We show that when implemented for PDE systems, the abstract control design methods lead in a natural way to controllers with "PDE parts". Moreover, we formulate the controller construction in a way which utilises minimal knowledge of the abstract system representation and is instead solely based on natural properties of the original PDE. We also discuss computation and approximation of the controller parameters, and illustrate the results with an example on control design for a boundary controlled diffusion equation.
