Design of experiments characterising heat conduction in magnetised, weakly collisional plasma

Heat conduction in weakly collisional, magnetised plasma is challenging to model accurately due to multifaceted physics governing heat-carrying electrons, including microinstabilities that scatter electrons and modify heat transport. Capturing these effects requires multidimensional kinetic theory simulations, which are computationally expensive. Experimental constraints overcome this issue, resulting in improved understanding of thermal transport in systems such as the intra-cluster medium of galaxy clusters, and the hot-spot in inertial confinement fusion. In this paper, we present a new experimental platform that produces a weakly collisional high-\b{eta} plasma expected to be susceptible to the whistler heat-flux instability. This platform, to be fielded on the Orion laser, enables characterisation of whistler-regulated thermal conductivity. The platform design is assessed using radiation-magnetohydrodynamics simulations with the code FLASH. Simulations using three thermal conduction models predict conductivity suppression by over an order of magnitude relative to the Spitzer value at whistler saturation, demonstrating the efficacy of the platform.

Public Quantum Network: The First Node

We present a quantum network that distributes entangled photons between the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and a public library in Urbana. The network allows members of the public to perform measurements on the photons. We describe its design and implementation and outreach based on the network. Over 400 instances of public interaction have been logged with the system since it was launched in November 2023.

Tangential approximation of analytic sets

Two subanalytic subsets of $ \mathbb R^n$ are called $s$-equivalent at a common point $P$ if the Hausdorff distance between their intersections with the sphere centered at $P$ of radius $r$ vanishes to order $>s$ as $r$ tends to $0$. In this work we strengthen this notion in the case of real subanalytic subsets of $\mathbb R^n$ with isolated singular points, introducing the notion of tangential $s$-equivalence at a common singular point which considers also the distance between the tangent planes to the sets near the point. We prove that, if $V(f)$ is the zero-set of an analytic map $f$ and if we assume that $V(f)$ has an isolated singularity, say at the origin $O$, then for any $s\geq 1$ the truncation of the Taylor series of $f$ of sufficiently high order defines an algebraic set with isolated singularity at $O$ which is tangentially $s$-equivalent to $V(f)$.
