Leptogenesis and Dirac neutrino masses in SO(10)

Within the scheme of Baryogenesis through Leptogenesis in the single flavor approximation, we emphasize the role of the Dirac neutrino mass $m_D$ in the SO(10) Grand Unification scheme, using the Higgs representations for the fermions masses ${\bf 10}$ and $\overline{\bf 126}$. Both representations are needed to get relations among the fermion masses, e.g. $m_b = m_\tau$, $m_\mu = 3 m_s$,... Taking these two representations allow to relax the condition $m_D = m_u$ obtained with the representation ${\bf 10}$ alone and to have general Dirac masses $m_D \not = m_u$. On the other hand, we assume that the antisymmetric representation ${\bf 120}$ is absent. Within this hypothesis, the unitary matrices $V^L$ and $V^R$ that diagonalize $m_D$ through $m_D = V^{L \dagger} m_D^{diag} V^R$ still satisfy the relation $V^R = V^{L*}$. Under these conditions, unlike the case of keeping only the ${\bf 10}$ representation, we obtain in parameter space several examples of the heavy neutrino spectrum consistent with the SO(10) unification scale, and a value for the baryon asymmetry $Y_B$ in agreement with data. For illustration, we detail a case that gives the heavy spectrum with masses $M_1 = 6.26 \times 10^{10}\ {\rm GeV}$, $M_2 = 2.23 \times 10^{12}\ {\rm GeV}$, $M_3 = 4.57 \times 10^{14}\ {\rm GeV}$ and, in the strong washout regime, the baryon asymmetry $Y_B = 8.50 \times 10^{-11}$ consistent with the data.

Isgur-Wise functions for $\boldsymbol{\Lambda_b \to \Lambda_c\left({1 \over 2}^\pm \right)}$ transitions in the Bakamjian-Thomas Relativistic Quark Model

We study the transitions ${\Lambda_b \to \Lambda_c\left({1 \over 2}^\pm \right)}$ in the Bakamjian-Thomas (BT) relativistic quark model formalism, which describes hadrons with a fixed number of constituents. In the heavy quark limit, the BT model yields covariant form factors and Isgur-Wise (IW) scaling, regardless of the spectroscopic model used to describe the bound states. It has been extensively applied to heavy mesons where subtle properties of the IW limit of QCD, including the Bjorken-Uraltsev sum rules, have been shown to be satisfied. The present paper, where the BT construction is applied to baryons, is unavoidably technical because one is dealing with a three-body problem. The complications originate from the natural choice of the Jacobi coordinates ${\vec \rho}$ (relative space coordinate between the two light spectator quarks) and ${\vec \lambda}$ (relative space coordinate between the center-of-mass of the two light quarks and the heavy quark). The corresponding orbital angular momenta are denoted by ${\vec \ell}_\rho$ and ${\vec \ell}_\lambda$, with ${\vec \ell}_\rho + {\vec \ell}_\lambda = {\vec L}$. For the transitions $\Lambda_b \to \Lambda_c\left({1 \over 2}^\pm\right)$, i.e. $L = 0 \to L = 0$ or $L = 0 \to L = 1$, one can see that the moduli $\ell_\rho$ and $\ell_\lambda$ can take an infinite number of values. For $L = 0 \to L = 0$ one has the constraint $\ell_\lambda = \ell_\rho$ and for $L = 0 \to L = 1$ the constraint is $\ell_\lambda = \ell_\rho \pm 1$. We compute explicitly the IW function $\xi_\Lambda (w)$ in the elastic case $\Lambda_b \left({1 \over 2}^+ \right) \to \Lambda_c \left({1 \over 2}^+ \right)$ and the much more involved IW function $\sigma_\Lambda (w)$ in the inelastic case $\Lambda_b \left({1 \over 2}^+ \right) \to \Lambda_c \left({1 \over 2}^- \right)$. These functions exhibit the expected properties of covariance and IW scaling.

Study of CP violation in $B^\pm$ decays to $\overline{D^0}(D^0) K^\pm$ at FCCee

The great progress made recently in the sector of Flavor Physics has enabled to establish CP violation in the B-meson decays. The unitarity triangle derived from the unitarity relation $V_{ub}^* V_{ud} + V_{cb}^* V_{cd} + V_{tb}^* V_{td} = 0$ has been measured very precisely. To further asses our understanding of CP violation, it would be useful to carry out similar measurement of other triangles. In this note, we investigate the triangle derived from the relation $V_{ub}^* V_{us} + V_{cb}^* V_{cs} + V_{tb}^* V_{ts} = 0$. Two angles of this triangle ($α_s$ and $β_s$) could be measured very accurately at FCCee using the decays $B_s(\overline{B_s})\rightarrow D^\pm_sK^\mp$ and $B_s(\overline{B_s})\rightarrow J/ψϕ$ respectively, as discussed elsewhere by us. This note concentrates on the measurement of the third angle $γ_s$ using the modes $B^\pm \to \overline{D^0}(D^0)K^\pm$. We show that a direct measurement of the angle $γ_s$ is possible with some specific $B^\pm$ decays with an estimated resolution of the order of 1$^\circ$.

Remarks on the penguin decay $B_s \to ϕϕ$ with prospects for FCCee

We underline the theoretical interest of the vector-vector penguin decay $B_s \to ϕϕ$, very clean from the experimental point of view. The CP-violation asymmetry $A_{CP}^{mix}$ comes from the interference of mixing and decay $λ_{ϕϕ} = {q \over p} {\bar{A} \over A}$. In the Standard Model (SM) and in the Naive Factorization limit, the CP phase from the mixing ${q \over p}$ exactly cancels the CP phase from the decay ratio ${\bar{A} \over A}$. Therefore, this mode is suitable to look for possible New Physics (NP) because $A_{CP}^{mix}$ would directly indicate the departure from the SM in mixing. We estimate the deviation from this cancellation by analyzing possible small effects in the SM, using in particular the QCD Factorization scheme. We compare the theoretical expectation for $A_{CP}^{mix}$ to the measurement of LHCb, and the implications for NP. We pay also special attention to the transverse amplitude $h = -$, the longitudinal and transverse polarization fractions, and the interesting helicity-dependent observables $λ_{ϕϕ}^{h=0}$ and $λ_{ϕϕ}^{h=-}$. On the other hand, we make an estimation of the expected sensitivity at the future FCCee experiment for the CP phase and modulus of $λ_{ϕϕ}$. We find $δ(\mid λ_{ϕϕ}\mid) = 0.004$ and $δ(ϕ_{ϕϕ}) = 0.009$ rad and, comparing to the LHCb data, we point out the expectations at FCCee in the search of NP.

CP violation and determination of the $bs$ "flat" unitarity triangle at FCCee

We investigate the sensitivity with which two angles of the "flat" unitarity triangle, defined by $V_{ub}^* V_{us} + V_{cb}^* V_{cs} + V_{tb}^* V_{ts} =0$, can possibly be measured directly at FCCee. We show that the measured errors on the angle $α_s = \arg(- V_{ub}^* V_{us} /V_{tb}^* V_{ts})$ and $β_s = \arg(-V_{tb}^* V_{ts} / V_{cb}^* V_{cs})$ should be better than $0.4^\circ$ and $0.035^\circ$, respectively. These measurements, combined with the measurement of the 3rd angle $γ_s = \arg(- V_{cb}^* V_{cs}/ V_{ub}^* V_{us})$, discussed in a different paper, will contribute to probe further the consistency of the CP sector of the Standard Model with unprecedented level of accuracy.

Heavy baryon wave functions, Bakamjian-Thomas approach to form factors, and observables in ${Λ_b \to Λ_c\left({1 \over 2}^\pm \right) \ell \overlineν}$ transitions

Motivated by the calculation of observables in the decays $Λ_b \to Λ_c\left({1 \over 2}^\pm \right) \ell \overlineν$, as tests of Lepton Flavor Universality, we present a calculation of form factors in the quark model. Our scheme combines a spectroscopic model, providing the internal wave functions, and the Bakamjian-Thomas relativistic formalism to deduce the wave functions in motion and current matrix elements, that amount in the heavy quark limit to the Isgur-Wise (IW) function. For baryons we meet difficulties using standard spectroscopic models, leading us to propose a simple phenomenological model : a Q-pointlike-diquark model, non-relativistic with harmonic oscillator forces, with a reasonable low-lying spectrum and good slope of the IW function. We extract this slope from Lattice data and find $ρ_Λ^2 \sim 2$. We are not able to reproduce the right $ρ_Λ^2$ when using standard linear + Coulomb potential models, both with three quarks $Qqq$ or in a Q-pointlike-diquark picture. These difficulties seem to derive from the high sensitivity of $ρ_Λ^2$ to the structure of the light quark subsystem. After fixing the parameters of our interim model to yield correct spectrum and $ρ_Λ^2$, we compute observables. Bjorken sum rule shows that the inelastic IW function is large, and therefore $Λ_b \to Λ_c \left({1 \over 2}^-, {3 \over 2}^- \right) \ell \overlineν$ could be studied at LHCb. Some observables in the $τ$ case present zeroes for specific values of $q^2$ that could be tests of the Standard Model.

Finite mass corrections for B -> D(*), D** \ell νdecays in the Bakamjian-Thomas relativistic quark model

The Bakamjian-Thomas relativistic quark model for hadron current matrix elements, while non-covariant at finite mass, is successful in the heavy quark limit : form factors are covariant and satisfy Isgur-Wise scaling and Bjorken-Uraltsev sum rules. Motivated by the so-called "1/2 vs. 3/2 puzzle" in B decays to positive parity D**, we examine the implications of the model at finite mass. In the elastic case 1/2^- -> 1/2^-, the HQET constraints for the O(1/m_Q) corrections are analytically fulfilled. A number of satisfying regularities is also found for inelastic transitions. We compute the form factors using the wave functions given by the Godfrey-Isgur potential. For 1/2^- \to 3/2^+ the departures from the heavy quark limit are small, but we find a strong enhancement in 1/2^- -> 1/2^+ (for 0^- -> 0^+). This enhancement is linked to a serious difficulty of the model at finite mass for the inelastic transitions, namely a violation of the HQET constraints at zero recoil formulated by Leibovich et al. These are nevertheless satisfied in the non-relativistic limit for the light quark. We conclude that these HQET rigorous constraints are crucial in the construction of a sensible relativistic quark model of inelastic form factors.

Sum rules of Bjorken-Uraltsev type in the Bakamjian-Thomas relativistic quark model

The Bakamjian-Thomas relativistic quark model, describing hadrons with a fixed number of constituents, yields in the heavy quark limit of QCD covariant Isgur-Wise functions and satisfies the whole tower of lowest moment sum rules (Bjorken-Uraltsev type sum rules). We first recall, as well as earlier results, the new formalism presented in our recent papers on Lorentz representations, which provide an elegant framework for the analysis of this model in the heavy quark limit and stress the results which have been already obtained in this direction. Then, we give some very explicit demonstrations of the fact that the Bakamjian-Thomas framework satifies the sum rules by considering simple cases of Isgur-Wise functions. In addition to the specific Bjorken and Uraltsev sum rules, an important sum rule that involves only heavy mesons with light cloud $j^P = {1 \over 2}^-$ and their radial excitations is demonstrated. This latter sum rule is phenomenologically interesting because it constrains the derivatives of the radially excited Isgur-Wise functions at zero recoil. On the other hand, we recall the limitations of the Bakamjian-Thomas scheme. At finite mass, current matrix elements with the current coupled to the heavy quark are no longer covariant, and higher moment sum rules that hold in the heavy quark limit of QCD are not satisfied.

Isgur-Wise functions and unitary representations of the Lorentz group : the meson case j = 1/2

We pursue the group theoretical method to study Isgur-Wise functions. We apply the general formalism, formerly applied to the baryon case j^P = 0^+ (for Λ_b -> Λ_c \ell ν), to mesons with j^P = 1/2^-, i.e. $\overline{B} -> D(D^{(*)})\ellν. In this case, more involved from the angular momentum point of view, only the principal series of unitary representations of the Lorentz group contribute. We obtain an integral representation for the IW function xi(w) with a positive measure, recover the bounds for the slope and the curvature of xi(w) obtained from the Bjorken-Uraltsev sum rule method, and get new bounds for higher derivatives. We demonstrate also that if the lower bound for the slope is saturated, the measure is a delta-function, and xi(w) is given by an explicit elementary function. Inverting the integral formula, we obtain the measure in terms of the IW function, allowing to formulate criteria to decide if a given ansatz for the Isgur-Wise function is compatible or not with the sum rule constraints. Moreover, we have obtained an upper bound on the IW function valid for any value of w. We compare these theoretical constraints to a number of forms for ξ(w) proposed in the literature. The "dipole" function ξ(w) = (2/(w+1))^(2c) satisfies all constraints for c \geq 3/4, while the QCD Sum Rule result including condensates does not satisfy them. Special care is devoted to the Bakamjian-Thomas relativistic quark model in the heavy quark limit and to the description of the Lorentz group representation that underlies this model. Consistently, the IW function satisfies all Lorentz group criteria for any explicit form of the meson Hamiltonian at rest.

New results on the baryon decay Lambda_b -> Lambda_c ell nu in Heavy Quark Effective Theory

The baryon differential spectrum of the baryon decay $Λ_b \to Λ_c \ell \barν_\ell$ will be measured in detail at LHCb. We obtain new results on the form factors in the heavy quark expansion of Heavy Quark Effective Theory that can be useful in the interpretation of the data. We formulate a sum rule for the elastic subleading form factor $A(w)$ at order $1/m_Q$, that originates from the Lagrangian perturbation $\mathcal{L}_{kin}$. In the sum rule appear only the intermediate states $(j^P, J^P) = (0^+, {1 \over 2}^+)$, entering also in the $1/{m_Q^2}$ correction to the axial form factor $G_1(w)$, that contributes to the differential rate at zero recoil $w = 1$. This result, together with another sum rule in the forward direction for $|G_1(1)|^2$, allows us to obtain a lower bound for the correction at zero recoil $- δ_{1/{m_Q^2}}^{(G_1)}$ in terms of the derivative $A'_1(1)$ and the slope $ρ^2_Λ$ and curvature $σ^2_Λ$ of the elastic Isgur-Wise function $ξ_Λ(w)$. Another theoretical implication is that $A'(1)$ must vanish for some relation between $ρ^2_Λ$ and $σ^2_Λ$, as well as for $ρ^2_Λ\to 0$, establishing a non-trivial correlation between the leading IW function $ξ_Λ(w)$ and the subleading one $A(w)$. A phenomenological estimation of these two functions allows to obtain a lower bound on $- δ_{1/{m_Q^2}}^{(G_1)}$.

Seesaw model in SO(10) with an upper limit on right-handed neutrino masses

In the framework of SO(10) gauge unification and the seesaw mechanism, we show that the upper bound on the mass of the heaviest right-handed neutrino $M_{R_3} < 3 \times 10^{11}$ GeV, given by the Pati-Salam intermediate scale of $B-L$ spontaneous symmetry breaking, constrains the observables related to the left-handed light neutrino mass matrix. We assume such an upper limit on the masses of right-handed neutrinos and, as a first approximation, a Cabibbo form for the matrix $V^L$ that diagonalizes the Dirac neutrino matrix $m_D$. Using the inverse seesaw formula, we show that our hypotheses imply a triangular relation in the complex plane of the light neutrino masses with the Majorana phases. We obtain normal hierarchy with an absolute scale for the light neutrino spectrum. Two regions are allowed for the lightest neutrino mass $m_1$ and for the Majorana phases, implying predictions for the neutrino mass measured in Tritium decay and for the double beta decay effective mass $| |$.

Baryogenesis via leptogenesis from quark-lepton symmetry\par and a compact heavy $N_R$ spectrum

By demanding a compact spectrum for the right-handed neutrinos and an approximate quark-lepton symmetry inspired from SO(10) gauge unification (assuming a Dirac neutrino mass matrix close to the up quark mass matrix), we construct a {\it fine tuning} scenario for baryogenesis via leptogenesis. We find two solutions with a normal hierarchy, with the lightest neutrino mass $m_1$ different from zero, providing an absolute scale for the spectrum. In the approximations of the model, there are three independent CP phases : $δ_L$ (that we take of the order of the quark Kobayashi-Maskawa phase) and the two light neutrino Majorana phases $α$ and $β$. A main conclusion is that, although this general scheme is rather flexible, in some regions of parameter space we find that the necessary baryogenesis with its sign is given in terms of the $δ_L$ phase alone. The light Majorana phases can also be computed and turn out to be close of $π/2$ or small. Moreover, SO(10) breaks down to the Pati-Salam group $SU(4) \times SU(2) \times SU(2)$ at the expected natural intermediate scale of about $10^{10}-10^{11}\ GeV$. A prediction is done for the effective mass in $(ββ)_{0ν}$ decay, the $ν_e$ mass and the sum of all light neutrino masses.

Note on new interesting baryon channels to measure the photon polarization in b -> s gamma

At LHC a large number of b-flavored baryons will be produced. In this note we propose new baryon modes to determine the photon helicity of the penguin transition $b \to s γ$. The decay $Λ_b \to Λγ$ has the drawback that the $Λ$, being neutral and long-lived, will escape detection most of the time. To overcome this difficulty, transitions of the type $Λ_b \to Λ^{*} γ$ have been proposed, where $Λ^{*}$ denotes an excited state decaying strongly within the detector into the clean mode $p K^-$. The doublet $Ξ_b$, that decays weakly, has a number of good features. The charged baryon $Ξ_b^-$ will decay into the mode $Ξ^- γ$, where the ground state hyperon $Ξ^-$, although it will decay most of the time outside the detector, can be detected because it is charged. We consider also the decay of $Ξ_b$ into $Ξ^{*} γ$, where a higher mass state $Ξ^{*}$ can decay strongly within the detector. We point out that the initial transverse polarization of $Ξ_b$ has to be known in all cases. To determine this parameter through the transition $Ξ_b \to J/Ψ Ξ$, we distinguish between different cases, and underline that in some situations one needs {\it theoretical input} on the asymmetry parameter $α_{Ξ_b}$ of the primary decay. {\it A fortiori} the same considerations apply to the case of the $Λ_b$.

Isgur-Wise functions and unitary representations of the Lorentz group : the baryon case j = 0

We propose a group theoretical method to study Isgur-Wise functions. A current matrix element splits into a heavy quark matrix element and an overlap of the initial and final clouds, related to the IW functions, that contain the long distance physics. The light cloud belongs to the Hilbert space of a unitary representation of the Lorentz group. Decomposing into irreducible representations one obtains the IW function as an integral formula, superposition of irreducible IW functions with positive measures, providing positivity bounds on its derivatives. Our method is equivalent to the sum rule approach, but sheds another light on the physics and summarizes and gives all its possible constraints. We expose the general formalism, thoroughly applying it to the case j = 0 for the light cloud, relevant to the semileptonic decay Lambda_b -> Lambda_c + l + nu. In this case, the principal series of the representations contribute, and also the supplementary series. We recover the bound for the curvature of the j = 0 IW function xi_Lambda (w) that we did obtain from the sum rule method, and we get new bounds for higher derivatives. We demonstrate also that if the lower bound for the curvature is saturated, then xi_Lambda (w) is completely determined, given by an explicit elementary function. We give criteria to decide if any ansatz for the Isgur-Wise function is compatible or not with the sum rules. We apply the method to some simple model forms proposed in the literature. Dealing with a Hilbert space, the sum rules are convergent, but this feature does not survive hard gluon radiative corrections.

Bound on the curvature of the Isgur-Wise function of the baryon semileptonic decay Lambda_b -> Lambda_c + l + nu

In the heavy quark limit of QCD, using the Operator Product Expansion, the formalism of Falk for hadrons or arbitrary spin, and the non-forward amplitude, as proposed by Uraltsev, we formulate sum rules involving the Isgur-Wise function $ξ_Λ (w)$ of the baryon transition $Λ_b \to Λ_c \ell \overlineν_{\ell}$, where the light cloud has $j^P=0^+$ for both initial and final baryons. We recover the lower bound for the slope $ρ_Λ^2 = - ξ'_Λ(1) \geq 0$ obtained by Isgur et al., and we generalize it by demonstrating that the IW function $ξ_Λ (w)$ is an alternate series in powers of $(w-1)$, i.e. $(-1)^n ξ_Λ^{(n)} (1) \geq 0$. Moreover, exploiting systematically the sum rules, we get an improved lower bound for the curvature in terms of the slope, $σ_Λ^2 = ξ"_Λ(1) \geq {3 \over 5} [ρ_Λ^2 + (ρ_Λ^2)^2]$. This bound constrains the shape of the Isgur-Wise function and it will be compelling in the analysis of future precise data on the differential rate of the baryon semileptonic decay $Λ_b \to Λ_c \ell \overlineν_{\ell}$, that has a large measured branching ratio, of about 5%.

Relation between Light Cone Distribution Amplitudes and Shape Function in B mesons

The Bakamjian-Thomas relativistic quark model provides a Poincaré representation of bound states with a fixed number of constituents and, in the heavy quark limit, form factors of currents satisfy covariance and Isgur-Wise scaling. We compute the Light Cone Distribution Amplitudes of $B$ mesons $ϕ_{\pm}^B(ω)$ as well as the Shape Function $S(ω)$, that enters in the decay $B \to X_s γ$, that are also covariant in this class of models. The LCDA and the SF are related through the quark model wave function. The former satisfy, in the limit of vanishing constituent light quark mass, the integral relation given by QCD in the valence sector of Fock space. Using a gaussian wave function, the obtained $S(ω)$ is identical to the so-called Roman Shape Function. From the parameters for the latter that fit the $B \to X_sγ$ spectrum we predict the behaviour of $ϕ_{\pm}^B(ω)$. We discuss the important role played by the constituent light quark mass. In particular, although $ϕ_-^B(0) \not= 0$ for vanishing light quark mass, a non-vanishing mass implies the unfamiliar result $ϕ_-^B (0) = 0$. Moreover, we incorporate the short distance behaviour of QCD to $ϕ_+^B (ω)$, which has sizeable effects at large $ω$. We obtain the values for the parameters $\barΛ \cong 0.35$ GeV and $λ_B^{-1} \cong 1.43$ GeV$^{-1}$. We compare with other theoretical approaches and illustrate the great variety of models found in the literature for the functions $ϕ_{\pm}^B (ω)$; hence the necessity of imposing further constraints as in the present paper. We briefly review also the different phenomena that are sensitive to the LCDA.

Leptogenesis within a generalized quark-lepton symmetry

Quark-lepton symmetry has been shown to be inconsistent with baryogenesis via leptogenesis in natural schemes of the see-saw mechanism. Within the phenomenological approach of textures, we relax this strict symmetry and propose weaker conditions, namely models of the neutrino Dirac mass matrix $M_D$ which have the same hierarchy as the matrix elements of $M_u$. We call this guide-line generalized $hierarchical$ quark-lepton symmetry. We consider in detail particular cases in which the moduli of the matrix elements of $M_D$ are equal to those of $M_u$. Within the phenomenological approach of textures, we try for the heavy Majorana mass matrix diagonal and off-diagonal forms. We find that an ansatz for $M_D$ preserving the hierarchy, together with an off-diagonal model for the heavy Majorana neutrino mass, is consistent with neutrino masses, neutrino mixing and baryogenesis via leptogenesis for an intermediate mass scale $m_R \sim 10^{12}$ GeV. The preservation of the hierarchical structure could come from a possible symmetry scheme.

Memorino on the `1/2 vs. 3/2 Puzzle' in $\bar B \to l \bar νX_c$ -- a Year Later and a Bit Wiser

The OPE treatment that has been so successful in describing inclusive $\bar B \to l \bar νX_c$ decays yields sum rules (in particular the Uraltsev sum rule and its higher moments) implying the dominance of the $P$ wave $j_q = 3/2$ charm states in $X_c$ over their $j_q=1/2$ counterparts. This prediction is supported by other general arguments as well as quark model calculations, which illustrate the OPE results, and by preliminary lattice findings. Its failure would indicate a significant limitation in our theoretical understanding of $\bar B \to l \bar νX_c$. Some experimental issues have been clarified since a preliminary version of this note had appeared, yet the verdict on the composition of the final states {\em beyond} $D$, $D^*$ and the two narrow $j_q = 3/2$ resonances remains unsettled. Establishing which hadronic configurations -- $D/D^* + π, D/D^* + 2 π, ...$ -- contribute, what their quantum numbers are and their mass distributions will require considerable experimental effort. We explain the theoretical issues involved and why a better understanding of them will be of significant value. Having significant contributions from a mass continuum distribution below 2.5 GeV raises serious theoretical questions for which we have no good answer. Two lists are given, one with measurements that need to be done and one with items of theoretical homework. Some of the latter can be done by employing existing theoretical tools, whereas others need new ideas.
