Charm Production in $\bar pA$-Collisions at the Charmonium Threshhold

We discuss the production of charmonium states in antiproton-nucleus collisions at the $ψ'$ threshold. It is explained that measurements in $\bar p A$ collisions will allow to get new information about the strengths of the inelastic $J/ψN$ and $ψ'N$ interaction, on the production of $Λ_c$ and $\bar{D}$ in charmonium-nucleon interactions and for the first time about the nondiagonal transitions $ψ' N\to J/ψN$. The inelastic $J/ψ$-nucleon cross section is extracted from the comparison of hadron-nucleus collisions with hadron-nucleon collisions. Predictions for the ratio of $J/ψ$ to $ψ'$ yields in antiproton-nucleus scatterings close to the threshold of $ψ'$ production for different nuclear targets are presented.

Charm production in antiproton-nucleus collisions at the $J/ψ$ and the $ψ'$ thresholds

We discuss the production of charmonium states in antiproton-nucleus collisions at the $ψ'$ threshold. It is explained that measurements in $\bar p A$ collisions will allow to get new information about the strengths of the inelastic $J/ψN, ψ'N$ interaction, on the production of $Λ_c$ and $\bar{D}$ in charmonium-nucleon interactions and for the first time about nondiagonal transitions $ψ' N\to J/ψN$. The inelastic $J/ψ$-nucleon cross section is extracted from the comparison of hadron-nucleus collisions with hadron-nucleon collisions. We extract the total $J/ψ$ nucleon cross section from photon-nucleon collisions by accounting for the color transparency phenomenon within the frame of the GVDM (Generalized Vector meson Dominance Model). We evaluate also within the GVDM the inelastic $ψ'$-nucleon cross section as well as the cross section for the nondiagonal transitions. Predictions for the ratio of $J/ψ$ to $ψ'$ yields in antiproton-nucleus scatterings close to the threshold of $ψ'$ production for different nuclear targets are presented.

Charmonium Production in gamma-A, p-A and A-A

The data for the production of the $ψ'$ meson in pA collisions at 450 GeV at CERN-SPS (of the NA50-collaboration) yields $σ(ψ' N)\approx 8$ mb under the assumption that the $ψ'$ is produced as a result of the space-time evolution of a point-like $c\bar c$ pair which expands with time to the full size of the charmonium state. However, much higher values of $σ(ψ' N)$ are not ruled out by the data. We show that recent CERN data confirm the suggestion that color fluctuations are the major source of suppression of the $J/ψ$ yield as observed at CERN in both pA and AA collisions.

Color Screening and the Suppression of the Charmonium State Yield in Nuclear Reactions

We discuss the new data for the production of the $ψ'$ meson in pA collisions at 450 GeV at CERN-SPS (of the NA50-collaboration) [1]. We extract from the CERN data $σ(ψ' N)\approx 8$ mb under the assumption that the $ψ'$ is produced as a result of the space-time evolution of a point-like $c\bar c$ pair which expands with time to the full size of the charmonium state. In the analysis we assume the existence of a relationship between the distribution of color in a hadron and the cross section of its interaction with a nucleon. However, our result is rather sensitive to the pattern of the expansion of the wave packet and significantly larger values of $σ(ψ' N)$ are not ruled out by the data. We show that recent CERN data confirm the suggestion of [2] that color fluctuations of the strengths in charmonium-nucleon interaction are the major source of suppression of the $J/ψ$ yield as observed at CERN in both pA and AA collisions.

The universal psi-prime-prime to psi-prime ratio as unambiguous signature for hard physics in nuclear reactions and in decays of beauty hadrons

We suggest the ratio of the $ψ''(3770)/ψ'(3686)$ production cross sections as an unambiguous probe of the dominance of hard, point-like physics in charmonium production. If hard physics dominates the charmonium production the ratio : ${σ(ψ'')\overσ(ψ')}\approx {Γ(ψ''\to l^+l^-)\over Γ(ψ'\to l^+l^-)} \approx 0.1$ is independent of the process. We argue that since the dominant $D\bar D$ decay mode of the $ψ''$-meson can be detected with a high efficiency at the current facilities the effective counting rate for the $ψ''$ production should be comparable to that of the $ψ'$ and hence it could be observed at the $B$-factories. Even in hadron induced processes the ratio will not be changed significantly by final state interactions due to the similar mass and size of these two charmonium states. A possible exception are the charmonium state interactions with low energy particles -- comovers -- which are especially relevant for the heavy ion collisions.

Probing coherent charmonium photoproduction off light nuclei at medium energies

We demonstrate how the elementary amplitudes $γN\to ΨN$, the amplitude of the nondiagonal $J/ψN\Leftrightarrow ψ' N$ transition, and the total $J/ψN$ and $ψ' N$ cross sections can be determined from measurements of the coherent $J/ψ$ and $ψ'$ photoproduction off light nuclei at moderate energies. For this purpose we provide a detailed numerical analysis of the coherent charmonium photoproduction off silicon within the generalized vector dominance model (GVDM) adjusted to account for the physics of charmonium models and color transparency phenomenon.

Cross Section Oscillations in the Coherent Charmonium Photoproduction off Nuclei at Moderate Energies

We calculate the coherent charmonium photoproduction at intermediate energies accounting for the physics of the charmonium bound states and the dependence of the cross section on the region occupied by color using a correspondingly adjusted generalized vector dominance model (GVDM). In the photon energy domain where the coherence lengths are comparable to the average internucleon distances in nuclei and the nuclear radii we found that significant oscillations of the total and forward photoproduction cross sections governed by the longitudinal nuclear form factor are strongly modified by the charmonium rescatterings accounting for the nondiagonal transitions related to the color screening phenomenon. We discuss how these oscillations can influence the determination of the genuine charmonium-nucleon cross sections in the forthcoming SLAC E160 experiment on low energy J/psi and psi' photoproduction off nuclei.

Suppression of High-P_T Jets as a Signal for Large Extra Dimensions and New Estimates of Lifetimes for Meta stable Micro Black Holes -From the Early Universe to Future Colliders

We address the production of black holes at LHC in space times with compactified space-like large extra dimensions (LXD). Final state black hole production leads to suppression of high-P_T jets, i.e. a sharp cut-off in the cross section for pp->jet+X. This signal is compared to the jet plus missing energy signature due to graviton production in the final state as proposed by the ATLAS collaboration. Time evolution and lifetimes of the newly created black holes are calculated based on the microcanonical formalism. It is demonstrated that previous lifetime estimates of micro black holes have been dramatically underestimated. The creation of a large number of quasi-stable black holes is predicted with life times beyond hundred fm/c at LHC. Medium modifications of the black holes evaporation rate due to the quark gluon plasma in relativistic heavy ion collisions as well as provided by the cosmic fluid in the early universe are studied.

Nuclear Broadening Effects on Hard Prompt Photons at Relativistic Energies

We calculate prompt photon production in high-energy nuclear collisions. We focus on the broadening of the intrinsic transverse momenta of the partons in the initial state from nuclear effects, and their influence on the prompt photon p_t distribution. Comparing to WA98 data from Pb+Pb collisions at SPS energy we find evidence for the presence of nuclear broadening at high p_t in this hard process. Below p_t=2.7 GeV the photon distribution is due to small momentum transfer processes. At RHIC energy, the effect of intrinsic transverse momentum on the spectrum of prompt photons is less prominent. The region p_t=3-4 GeV would be the most promising for studying the nuclear broadening effects at that energy. Below p_t=2-3 GeV the contribution from large momentum transfers flattens out, and we expect that region to be dominated by soft contributions.

Current Status of Quark Gluon Plasma Signals

Compelling evidence for the creation of a new form of matter has been claimed to be found in Pb+Pb collisions at SPS. We discuss the uniqueness of often proposed experimental signatures for quark matter formation in relativistic heavy ion collisions. It is demonstrated that so far none of the proposed signals like Jψmeson production/suppression, strangeness enhancement, dileptons, and directed flow unambigiously show that a phase of deconfined matter has been formed in SPS Pb+Pb collisions. We emphasize the need for systematic future measurements to search for simultaneous irregularities in the excitation functions of several observables in order to come close to pinning the properties of hot, dense QCD matter from data.

Suppression of Quarkonium Production in Heavy Ion Collisions at RHIC and LHC

A model for the production of quarkonium states in the midrapidity region at RHIC and LHC energy range is presented which explores well understood properties of QCD only. An increase of the quarkonium hadronisation time with the initial energy leads to a gradual change of the most important phenomena from fixed target- to collider-energies. We evaluate nuclear effects in the quarkonium production due to medium modification of the momentum distribution of the heavy quarks produced in the hard interactions, i.e. due to the broadening of the transverse momentum distribution. Other nuclear effects, i.e. nuclear shadowing and parton energy loss, are also evaluated.

Critical Review Of Quark Gluon Plasma Signals

Compelling evidence for a new form of matter has been claimed to be formed in Pb+Pb collisions at SPS. We critically review two suggested signatures for this new state of matter: First the suppression of the J/$Ψ$, which should be strongly suppressed in the QGP by two different mechanisms, the color-screening and the QCD-photoeffect. Secondly the measured particle, in particular strange hadronic, ratios might signal the freeze-out from a quark-gluon phase.

Charmonium Suppression - Interplay of Hadronic and Partonic Degrees of Freedom

Last year the E866-group of the Fermilab measured the $x_F$ dependence of $J/Ψ$ and $Ψ'$ suppression in $pA$ collisions. We discuss two of the effects found in that experiment with regard to color coherence effects: the different suppression of the $J/Ψ$ and the $Ψ'$ at $x_F<0$ and the significant suppression of both at large $x_F$. The small $x_F$ regions is dominated by fully formed charmonium states and thus enables us to discuss the formation time and the cross section of the different charmonium states. In the large $x_F$ region the interaction of the charmonium states with nuclear matter has to be described by partonic degrees of freedom, because in that kinematic domain the formation time is much larger than the nuclear radii. The understanding of this region will be crucial for the interpretation of the data of the future heavy ion colliders RHIC and LHC.

Physics opportunities at RHIC and LHC

Nonequilibrium models (three-fluid hydrodynamics, UrQMD, and quark molecular dynamics) are used to discuss the uniqueness of often proposed experimental signatures for quark matter formation in relativistic heavy ion collisions from the SPS via RHIC to LHC. It is demonstrated that these models -- although they do treat the most interesting early phase of the collisions quite differently (thermalizing QGP vs. coherent color fields with virtual particles) -- all yield a reasonable agreement with a large variety of the available heavy ion data. Hadron/hyperon yields, including $J/Ψ$ meson production/suppression, strange matter formation, dileptons, and directed flow (bounce-off and squeeze-out) are investigated. Observations of interesting phenomena in dense matter are reported. However, we emphasize the need for systematic future measurements to search for simultaneous irregularities in the excitation functions of several observables in order to come close to pinning the properties of hot, dense QCD matter from data. The role of future experiments with the STAR and ALICE detectors is pointed out.

Modelling J/psi production and absorption in a microscopic nonequilibrium approach

Charmonium production and absorption in heavy ion collisions is studied with the Ultrarelativisitic Quantum Molecular Dynamics model. We compare the scenario of universal and time independent color-octet dissociation cross sections with one of distinct color-singlet J/psi, psi' and chi_c states, evolving from small, color transparent configurations to their asymptotic sizes. The measured J/psi production cross sections in pA and AB collisions at SPS energies are consistent with both - purely hadronic - scenarios. The predicted rapidity dependence of J/psi suppression can be used to discriminate between the two experimentally. The importance of interactions with secondary hadrons and the applicability of thermal reaction kinetics to J/psi absorption are investigated. We discuss the effect of nuclear stopping and the role of leading hadrons. The dependence of the psi' to J/psi ratio on the model assumptions and the possible influence of refeeding processes is also studied.

Charmonium suppression from purely geometrical effects

The extend to which geometrical effects contribute to the production and suppression of the $J/ψ$ and $q\bar{q}$ minijet pairs in general is investigated for high energy heavy ion collisions at SPS, RHIC and LHC energies. For the energy range under investigation, the geometrical effects referred to are shadowing and anti-shadowing, respectively. Due to those effects, the parton distributions in nuclei deviate from the naive extrapolation from the free nucleon result; $f_{A}\neq A f_{N}$. The strength of the shadowing/anti-shadowing effect increases with the mass number. The consequences of gluonic shadowing effects for the $x_F$ distribution of $J/ψ$'s at $\sqrt s =20$ GeV, $\sqrt s =200$ GeV and $\sqrt s =6$ TeV are calculated for some relevant combinations of nuclei, as well as the $p_T$ distribution of minijets at midrapidity for $N_f=4$ in the final state.

J/psi suppression in heavy ion collisions - interplay of hard and soft QCD processes

We study J/psi suppression in AB collisions assuming that the charmonium states evolve from small, color transparent configurations. Their interaction with nucleons and nonequilibrated, secondary hadrons is simulated using the microscopic model UrQMD. The Drell-Yan lepton pair yield and the J/psi/Drell-Yan ratio are calculated as a function of the neutral transverse energy in Pb+Pb collisions at 160 GeV and found to be in reasonable agreement with existing data.

Dissociation rates of J/psi's with comoving mesons - thermal vs. nonequilibrium scenario

We study J/psi dissociation processes in hadronic environments. The validity of a thermal meson gas ansatz is tested by confronting it with an alternative, nonequilibrium scenario. Heavy ion collisions are simulated in the framework of the microscopic transport model UrQMD, taking into account the production of charmonium states through hard parton-parton interactions and subsequent rescattering with hadrons. The thermal gas and microscopic transport scenarios are shown to be very dissimilar. Estimates of J/psi survival probabilities based on thermal models of comover interactions in heavy ion collisions are therefore not reliable.
