A renormalizable theory for not-so-light nuclei

We present an improved action for Pionless Effective Field Theory (EFT). Previous formulations of renormalizable nuclear EFTs have encountered instabilities in systems with more than four nucleons. We resolve this issue by introducing a finite interaction range at leading order, which is compensated for in perturbation theory at next-to-leading order. Calculated ground-state energies of $^4$He, $^6$Li, $^{12}$C, and $^{16}$O converge and agree with experiment within theoretical uncertainties. This first successful implementation of systematic renormalizability beyond the lightest nuclei enables not only applications to larger nuclei but also extensions to other EFTs in the strong-coupling regime.

Limits on an improved action for contact effective field theory in two-body systems

We consider a possible resummation of subleading effects in two-body systems with a large scattering length as described by a short-range effective field theory (EFT). In particular, we investigate the consequences of a resummation of part of the range corrections. Explicit calculations of the two-body phase shifts and charge form factor indicate that, except for extreme choices, resummations do not alter the convergence of the EFT expansion and are often beneficial at lowest orders. We have considered the expansion when the regulator cutoff is removed as well as when it is finite, and find that the cutoff is not an important factor for resummations. Our results connect with other works where the partial resummation is induced by potentials with finite cutoffs or interaction ranges.

Improved action for contact effective field theory

We present an improved action for renormalizable effective field theories (EFTs) of systems near the two-body unitarity limit. The ordering of EFT interactions is constrained, but not entirely fixed, by the renormalization group. The remaining freedom can be used to improve the theory's convergence, to simplify its applications, and to connect it to phenomenological models. We exemplify the method on a contact theory applied to systems of up to five $^4$He atoms. We solve the EFT at leading order including a subleading interaction that accounts for part of the two-body effective range. We show that the effects of such fake range can be compensated in perturbation theory at next-to-leading order, as long as the fake range is smaller or comparable to the experimental effective range. These results open the possibility of using similar improved actions for other many-body systems.

The onset of $\Lambda\Lambda$ hypernuclear binding

Binding energies of light, $A\leq 6$, $\Lambda\Lambda$ hypernuclei are calculated using the stochastic variational method in a pionless effective field theory (EFT) approach at leading order with the purpose of assessing critically the onset of binding in the strangeness S=-2 hadronic sector. The EFT input in this sector consists of (i) a $\Lambda\Lambda$ contact term constrained by the $\Lambda\Lambda$ scattering length $a_{\Lambda\Lambda}$, using a range of values compatible with $\Lambda\Lambda$ correlations observed in relativistic heavy ion collisions, and (ii) a $\Lambda\Lambda N$ contact term constrained by the only available $A\leq 6$ $\Lambda\Lambda$ hypernucler binding energy datum of $^{6}_{\Lambda\Lambda}$He. The recently debated neutral three-body and four-body systems $^{3}_{\Lambda\Lambda}$n and $^{4}_{\Lambda\Lambda}$n are found unbound by a wide margin. A relatively large value of $|a_{\Lambda\Lambda}| \gtrsim 1.5$ fm is needed to bind $^{4}_{\Lambda\Lambda}$H, thereby questioning its particle stability. In contrast, the particle stability of the $A=5$ $\Lambda\Lambda$ hypernuclear isodoublet $^{5}_{\Lambda\Lambda} $H--$^{5}_{\Lambda\Lambda}$He is robust, with $\Lambda$ separation energy of order 1 MeV.

Ground-State Properties of $^{4}$He and $^{16}$O Extrapolated from Lattice QCD with Pionless EFT

We extend the prediction range of Pionless Effective Field Theory with an analysis of the ground state of $^{16}$O in leading order. To renormalize the theory, we use as input both experimental data and lattice QCD predictions of nuclear observables, which probe the sensitivity of nuclei to increased quark masses. The nuclear many-body Schr\"odinger equation is solved with the Auxiliary Field Diffusion Monte Carlo method. For the first time in a nuclear quantum Monte Carlo calculation, a linear optimization procedure, which allows us to devise an accurate trial wave function with a large number of variational parameters, is adopted. The method yields a binding energy of $^{4}$He which is in good agreement with experiment at physical pion mass and with lattice calculations at larger pion masses. At leading order we do not find any evidence of a $^{16}$O state which is stable against breakup into four $^4$He, although higher-order terms could bind $^{16}$O.

Effective Field Theory for Lattice Nuclei

We show how nuclear effective field theory (EFT) and ab initio nuclear-structure methods can turn input from lattice quantum chromodynamics (LQCD) into predictions for the properties of nuclei. We argue that pionless EFT is the appropriate theory to describe the light nuclei obtained in recent LQCD simulations carried out at pion masses much heavier than the physical pion mass. We solve the EFT using the effective-interaction hyperspherical harmonics and auxiliary-field diffusion Monte Carlo methods. Fitting the three leading-order EFT parameters to the deuteron, dineutron and triton LQCD energies at $m_{\pi}\approx 800$ MeV, we reproduce the corresponding alpha-particle binding and predict the binding energies of mass-5 and 6 ground states.
