Electron Ptychography

Electron ptychography describes a family of algorithms which are used to enable the reconstruction of complex specimen transmission functions of a sample in order to obtain both phase and amplitude information, as applied within the realms of electron microscopy. Ptychographic methods can be very useful in the imaging of beam sensitive materials, samples with both strongly- and weakly-scattering elements, and for mapping the functional properties of materials. Ptychography can further be used to achieve image resolutions far beyond the conventional resolution limit defined by the imaging aperture size. In this article, we review the development of ptychography and compare presently available methods to perform ptychographic image reconstruction on data collected in the (scanning) (transmission) electron microscope. We aim to enable the reader to determine optimal data collection parameters, and the most suitable ptychographic method for the information they seek to determine from their sample.

Fractionalized Magnetization Plateaus in the Shastry-Sutherland Lattice Material Er$_2$Be$_2$GeO$_7$

The experimental study of magnetism on the Shastry-Sutherland lattice has been ongoing for more than two decades, following the discovery of the first Shastry-Sutherland lattice materials SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$. However, the study of Shastry-Sutherland systems is often complicated by the requirements of high magnetic fields ($>$~20~T SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$) or the presence of itinerate electrons (e.g. REB$_4$). In this paper, we present the magnetic properties of the Shastry-Sutherland lattice material Er$_2$Be$_2$GeO$_7$. Like SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$, Er$_2$Be$_2$GeO$_7$ exhibits fractionalized magnetization plateaus. Unlike SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$, Er$_2$Be$_2$GeO$_7$ exhibits long-range order below $\sim1~$K, and the plateaus are accessible using commercial laboratory equipment, occurring for fields <~1~T. The fractions of magnetization present are closest to $\frac{1}{4}$ and $\frac{1}{2}$ of the full powder moment; we show that the $\frac{1}{4}$ magnetization plateau in Er$_2$Be$_2$GeO$_7$ has a classical analog, well represented by the magnetic structure (canted antiferromagnetic) observed in powder neutron diffraction. The lack of itinerate electrons, chemical disorder, and the low fields required to access the fractionalized magnetization plateaus promises Er$_2$Be$_2$GeO$_7$ to be a prime candidate for the study of frustrated magnetism on the Shastry-Sutherland lattice.

A Candidate for the Quantum Spin Liquid Ground-State in the Shastry-Sutherland Lattice Material Yb$_2$Be$_2$GeO$_7$

The quasi-2D Shastry-Sutherland model has remained topical in the field of condensed matter physics for the last two decades, following the experimental realization of the model in the material SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$. Since then, research into the Shastry-Sutherland system has revealed more nuanced physics than initially predicted; recent theoretical works have even predicted a quantum spin liquid phase may exist. Herein, we report on a new Shastry-Sutherland lattice material, Yb$_2$Be$_2$GeO$_7$, of the rare-earth melilite family RE$_2$Be$_2$GeO$_7$. We find, through SQUID magnetometry, powder neutron diffraction, specific heat capacity, and muon spin relaxation, that Yb$_2$Be$_2$GeO$_7$ lacks magnetic order and exhibits persistent spin dynamics to at least 17 mK. We propose the Shastry-Sutherland lattice material Yb$_2$Be$_2$GeO$_7$ as a candidate to host a quantum spin liquid ground-state.

Photoproduction of the {\Sigma}+ hyperon using linearly polarized photons with CLAS

Background: Measurements of the polarization observables {\Sigma}, P, T, Ox, Oz for the reaction {\gamma}p {\rightarrow) KS0 {\Sigma}+ using a linearly polarized photon beam of energy 1.1 to 2.1 GeV are reported. Purpose: The measured data provide information on a channel that has not been studied extensively, but is required for a full coupled-channel analysis in the nucleon resonance region. Method: Observables have been simultaneously extracted using likelihood sampling with a Markov-Chain Monte- Carlo process. Results: Angular distributions in bins of photon energy E{\gamma} are produced for each polarization observable. T, Ox and Oz are first time measurements of these observables in this reaction. The extraction of {\Sigma} extends the energy range beyond a previous measurement. The measurement of P, the recoil polarization, is consistent with previous measurements. Conclusions: The measured data are shown to be significant enough to affect the estimation of the nucleon resonance parameters when fitted within a coupled-channels model.

Experimental Evidence for the Spiral Spin Liquid in LiYbO$_2$

Spiral spin liquids are an exotic class of correlated paramagnets with an enigmatic magnetic ground state composed of a degenerate manifold of fluctuating spin spirals. Experimental realisations of the spiral spin liquid are scarce, mainly due to the prominence of structural distortions in candidate materials that can trigger order-by-disorder transitions to more conventionally ordered magnetic ground states. Expanding the pool of candidate materials that may host a spiral spin liquid is therefore crucial to realising this novel magnetic ground state and understanding its robustness against perturbations that arise in real materials. Here, we show that the material LiYbO$_2$ is the first experimental realisation of a spiral spin liquid predicted to emerge from the $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg model on an elongated diamond lattice. Through a complementary combination of high-resolution and diffuse neutron magnetic scattering studies on a polycrystalline sample, we demonstrate that LiYbO$_2$ fulfils the requirements for the experimental realisation of the spiral spin liquid and reconstruct single-crystal diffuse neutron magnetic scattering maps that reveal continuous spiral spin contours -- a characteristic experimental hallmark of this exotic magnetic phase.

Beam-Recoil Transferred Polarization in $K^+Y$ Electroproduction in the Nucleon Resonance Region with CLAS12

Beam-recoil transferred polarizations for the exclusive electroproduction of $K^+\Lambda$ and $K^+\Sigma^0$ final states from an unpolarized proton target have been measured using the CLAS12 spectrometer at Jefferson Laboratory. The measurements at beam energies of 6.535~GeV and 7.546~GeV span the range of four-momentum transfer $Q^2$ from 0.3 to 4.5~GeV$^2$ and invariant energy $W$ from 1.6 to 2.4~GeV, while covering the full center-of-mass angular range of the $K^+$. These new data extend the existing hyperon polarization data from CLAS in a similar kinematic range but from a significantly larger dataset. They represent an important addition to the world data, allowing for better exploration of the reaction mechanism in strangeness production processes, for further understanding of the spectrum and structure of excited nucleon states, and for improved insight into the strong interaction in the regime of non-perturbative dynamics.

First-time measurement of Timelike Compton Scattering

We present the first measurement of the Timelike Compton Scattering process, $\gamma p\to p^\prime \gamma^* (\gamma^*\to e^+e^-) $, obtained with the CLAS12 detector at Jefferson Lab. The photon beam polarization and the decay lepton angular asymmetries are reported in the range of timelike photon virtualities $2.25<Q^{\prime 2}<9$ GeV$^2$, squared momentum transferred $0.1<-t<0.8$ GeV$^2$, and average total center-of-mass energy squared ${s}=14.5$ GeV$^2$. The photon beam polarization asymmetry, similar to the beam-spin asymmetry in Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering, is sensitive to the imaginary part of the Compton Form Factors and provides a way to test the universality of the Generalized Parton Distributions. The angular asymmetry of the decay leptons accesses the real part of the Compton Form Factors and thus the D-term in the parametrization of the Generalized Parton Distributions.

Factors limiting quantitative phase retrieval in atomic-resolution differential phase contrast scanning transmission electron microscopy using a segmented detector

Quantitative differential phase contrast imaging of materials in atomic-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy using segmented detectors is limited by various factors, including coherent and incoherent aberrations, detector positioning and uniformity, and scan-distortion. By comparing experimental case studies of monolayer and few-layer graphene with image simulations, we explore which parameters require the most precise characterisation for reliable and quantitative interpretation of the reconstructed phases. Coherent and incoherent lens aberrations are found to have the most significant impact. For images over a large field of view, the impact of noise and non-periodic boundary conditions are appreciable, but in this case study have less of an impact than artefacts introduced by beam deflections coupling to beam scanning (imperfect tilt-shift purity).

Improved $\Lambda p$ Elastic Scattering Cross Sections Between 0.9 and 2.0 GeV/c and Connections to the Neutron Star Equation of State

Strange matter is believed to exist in the cores of neutron stars based on simple kinematics. If this is true, then hyperon-nucleon interactions will play a significant part in the neutron star equation of state (EOS). Yet, compared to other elastic scattering processes, there is very little data on $\Lambda$-$N$ scattering. This experiment utilized the CLAS detector to study the $\Lambda p \rightarrow \Lambda p$ elastic scattering cross section in the incident $\Lambda$ momentum range 0.9-2.0 GeV/c. This is the first data on this reaction in several decades. The new cross sections have significantly better accuracy and precision than the existing world data, and the techniques developed here can also be used in future experiments.

Measurement of the proton spin structure at long distances

Measuring the spin structure of protons and neutrons tests our understanding of how they arise from quarks and gluons, the fundamental building blocks of nuclear matter. At long distances the coupling constant of the strong interaction becomes large, requiring non-perturbative methods to calculate quantum chromodynamics processes, such as lattice gauge theory or effective field theories. Here we report proton spin structure measurements from scattering a polarized electron beam off polarized protons. The spin-dependent cross-sections were measured at large distances, corresponding to the region of low momentum transfer squared between 0.012 and 1.0 GeV$^2$. This kinematic range provides unique tests of chiral effective field theory predictions. Our results show that a complete description of the nucleon spin remains elusive, and call for further theoretical works, e.g. in lattice quantum chromodynamics. Finally, our data extrapolated to the photon point agree with the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum rule, a fundamental prediction of quantum field theory that relates the anomalous magnetic moment of the proton to its integrated spin-dependent cross-sections.

Multidimensional, high precision measurements of beam single spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive $\pi^{+}$ electroproduction off protons in the valence region

High precision measurements of the polarized electron beam-spin asymmetry in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) from the proton have been performed using a 10.6~GeV incident electron beam and the CLAS12 spectrometer at Jefferson Lab. We report here a high precision multidimensional study of single $\pi^{+}$ SIDIS data over a large kinematic range in Bjorken x, fractional energy and transverse momentum of the hadron as well as photon virtualities $Q^{2}$ ranging from $1-7\,$GeV$^{2}$. In particular, the structure function ratio $F^{\sin\phi}_{LU}/F_{UU}$ has been determined, where $F^{\sin\phi}_{LU}$ is a twist-3 quantity that can reveal novel aspects of emergent hadron mass and quark-gluon correlations within the nucleon. The data's impact on the evolving understanding of the underlying reaction mechanisms and their kinematic variation is explored using theoretical models for the different contributing transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions.

Extraction of beam-spin asymmetries from the hard exclusive $\pi^{+}$ channel off protons in a wide range of kinematics

We have measured beam-spin asymmetries to extract the $\sin\phi$ moment $A_{LU}^{\sin\phi}$ from the hard exclusive $\vec{e} p \to e^\prime n \pi^+$ reaction above the resonance region, for the first time with nearly full coverage from forward to backward angles in the center-of-mass. The $A_{LU}^{\sin\phi}$ moment has been measured up to 6.6 GeV$^{2}$ in $-t$, covering the kinematic regimes of Generalized Parton Distributions (GPD) and baryon-to-meson Transition Distribution Amplitudes (TDA) at the same time. The experimental results in very forward kinematics demonstrate the sensitivity to chiral-odd and chiral-even GPDs. In very backward kinematics where the TDA framework is applicable, we found $A_{LU}^{\sin\phi}$ to be negative, while a sign change was observed near 90$^\circ$ in the center-of-mass. The unique results presented in this paper will provide critical constraints to establish reaction mechanisms that can help to further develop the GPD and TDA frameworks.

Local nuclear and magnetic order in the two-dimensional spin glass, Mn$_{0.5}$Fe$_{0.5}$PS$_3$

We present a comprehensive study of the short-ranged nuclear and magnetic order in the two-dimensional spin glass, Mn$_{0.5}$Fe$_{0.5}$PS$_3$. Nuclear neutron scattering data reveal a random distribution of Mn$^{2+}$ and Fe$^{2+}$ ions within the honeycomb layers, which gives rise to a spin glass state through inducing competition between neighbouring exchange interactions, indicated in magnetic susceptibility data by a cusp at the glass transition, $T_g = 35$ K. Analysis of magnetic diffuse neutron scattering data collected for both single crystal and polycrystalline samples gives further insight into the origin of the spin glass phase, with spin correlations revealing a mixture of satisfied and unsatisfied correlations between magnetic moments within the honeycomb planes, which can be explained by considering the magnetic structures of the parent compounds, MnPS$_3$ and FePS$_3$. We found that, on approaching $T_g$ from above, an ensemble-averaged correlation length of $\xi = 5.5(6)$ \r{A} developed between satisfied correlations, and below $T_g$, the glassy behaviour gave rise to a distance-independent correlation between unsatisfied moments. Correlations between the planes were found to be very weak, which mirrored our observations of rod-like structures parallel to the c* axis in our single crystal diffraction measurements, confirming the two-dimensional nature of Mn$_{0.5}$Fe$_{0.5}$PS$_3$.

Photoproduction of $\eta$ mesons off the proton for $1.2 < E_\gamma < 4.7$ GeV using CLAS at Jefferson Laboratory

Photoproduction cross sections are reported for the reaction $\gamma p\to p\eta$ using energy-tagged photons and the CLAS spectrometer at Jefferson Laboratory. The $\eta$ mesons are detected in their dominant charged decay mode, $\eta\to \pi^+\pi^-\pi^0$, and results on differential cross sections are presented for incident photon energies between 1.2 and 4.7 GeV. These new $\eta$ photoproduction data are consistent with earlier CLAS results but extend the energy range beyond the nucleon resonance region into the Regge regime. The normalized angular distributions are also compared with the experimental results from several other experiments, and with predictions of $\eta$ MAID\,2018 and the latest solution of the Bonn-Gatchina coupled-channel analysis. Differential cross sections $d\sigma/dt$ are presented for incident photon energies $E_\gamma > 2.9$ GeV ($W > 2.5$ GeV), and compared with predictions which are based on Regge trajectories exchange in the $t$-channel (Regge models). The data confirm the expected dominance of $\rho$, $\omega$ vector-meson exchange in an analysis by the Joint Physics Analysis Center.

From magnetic order to quantum disorder: a $\mu$SR study of the Zn-barlowite series of $S={\frac{1}{2}}$ kagom\'e antiferromagnets, Zn$_{x}$Cu$_{4-x}$(OH)$_{6}$FBr

We report a comprehensive muon spectroscopy study of the Zn-barlowite series of $S={\frac{1}{2}}$ kagom\'e antiferromagnets, Zn$_x$Cu$_{4-x}$(OH)$_{6}$FBr, for $x=0.00$ to $0.99(1)$. By combining muon spin relaxation and rotation measurements with state-of-the-art density-functional theory muon-site calculations, we observe the formation of both $\mu$--F and $\mu$--OH complexes in Zn-barlowite. From these stopping sites, implanted muon spins reveal the suppression of long-range magnetic order into a possible quantum spin liquid state upon increasing concentration of Zn-substitution. In the parent compound ($x=0$), static long-range magnetic order below $T_{\mathsf{N}}=15$ K manifests itself in the form of spontaneous oscillations in the time-dependent muon asymmetry signal consistent with the dipolar fields expected from the calculated muon stopping sites and the previously determined magnetic structure of barlowite. Meanwhile, in the $x=1.0$ end-member of the series---in which antiferromagnetic kagom\'e layers of Cu$^{2+}$ $S={\frac{1}{2}}$ moments are decoupled by diamagnetic Zn$^{2+}$ ions---we observe that dynamic magnetic moment fluctuations persist down to at least 50 mK, indicative of a quantum disordered ground state. We demonstrate that this crossover from a static to dynamic magnetic ground state occurs for compositions of Zn-barlowite with $x>0.5$, which bears resemblance to dynamical behaviour of the widely studied Zn-paratacamite series that contains the quantum spin liquid candidate herbertsmithite.

Probing the core of the strong nuclear interaction

The strong nuclear interaction between nucleons (protons and neutrons) is the effective force that holds the atomic nucleus together. This force stems from fundamental interactions between quarks and gluons (the constituents of nucleons) that are described by the equations of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). However, as these equations cannot be solved directly, physicists resort to describing nuclear interactions using effective models that are well constrained at typical inter-nucleon distances in nuclei but not at shorter distances. This limits our ability to describe high-density nuclear matter such as in the cores of neutron stars. Here we use high-energy electron scattering measurements that isolate nucleon pairs in short-distance, high-momentum configurations thereby accessing a kinematical regime that has not been previously explored by experiments, corresponding to relative momenta above 400 MeV/c. As the relative momentum between two nucleons increases and their separation thereby decreases, we observe a transition from a spin-dependent tensor-force to a predominantly spin-independent scalar-force. These results demonstrate the power of using such measurements to study the nuclear interaction at short-distances and also support the use of point-like nucleons with two- and three-body effective interactions to describe nuclear systems up to densities several times higher than the central density of atomic nuclei.

Exploring the Structure of the Bound Proton with Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering

In the past two decades, deeply virtual Compton scattering of electrons has been successfully used to advance our knowledge of the partonic structure of the free proton and investigate correlations between the transverse position and the longitudinal momentum of quarks inside the nucleon. Meanwhile, the structure of bound nucleons in nuclei has been studied in inclusive deep-inelastic lepton scattering experiments off nuclear targets, showing a significant difference in longitudinal momentum distribution of quarks inside the bound nucleon, known as the EMC effect. In this work, we report the first beam spin asymmetry (BSA) measurement of exclusive deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) off a proton bound in $^4$He. The data used here were accumulated using a $6$ GeV longitudinally polarized electron beam incident on a pressurized $^4$He gaseous target placed within the CLAS spectrometer in Hall-B at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The azimuthal angle ($\phi$) dependence of the BSA was studied in a wide range of virtual photon and scattered proton kinematics. The $Q^2$, $x_B$, and t dependencies of the BSA on the bound proton are compared with those on the free proton. In the whole kinematical region of our measurements, the BSA on the bound proton is smaller by 20\% to 40\%, indicating possible medium modification of its partonic structure.

Near-threshold $\pi^-$ photoproduction on the deuteron

The first experimental investigation of the near-threshold cross section for incoherent $\pi^-$ photoproduction on the deuteron $\gamma$ d -> $\pi^-$ pp is presented. The experimental technique involved detection of the ~131 MeV gamma ray resulting from the radiative capture of photoproduced $\pi^-$ in the target. The total cross section has been measured using an unpolarized tagged-photon beam, a liquid-deuterium target, and three very large NaI(Tl) spectrometers. The data are compared to theoretical models that give insight into the elementary reaction $\gamma$ n -> $\pi^-$ p and pion-nucleon and nucleon-nucleon final-state interactions.
