Magnetic Helicity Generation from the Cosmic Axion Field

The coupling between a primordial magnetic field and the cosmic axion field generates a helical component of the magnetic field around the time in which the axion starts to oscillate. If the energy density of the seed magnetic field is comparable to the energy density of the universe at that time, then the resulting magnetic helicity is about |H_B| \simeq (10^{-20} G)^2 kpc and remains constant after its generation. As a corollary, we find that the standard properties of the oscillating axion remain unchanged even in the presence of very strong magnetic fields.

Dynamics of Ferromagnetic Walls: Gravitational Properties

We discuss a new mechanism which allows domain walls produced during the primordial electroweak phase transition. We show that the effective surface tension of these domain walls can be made vanishingly small due to a peculiar magnetic condensation induced by fermion zero modes localized on the wall. We find that in the perfect gas approximation the domain wall network behaves like a radiation gas. We consider the recent high-red shift supernova data and we find that the corresponding Hubble diagram is compatible with the presence in the Universe of a ideal gas of ferromagnetic domain walls. We show that our domain wall gas induces a completely negligible contribution to the large-scale anisotropy of the microwave background radiation.

Faraday Rotation of the Cosmic Microwave Background Polarization and Primordial Magnetic Field Properties

Measurements of the Faraday rotation of the cosmic microwave background radiation (CMBR) polarization could provide evidence for the existence of primordial magnetic fields. The Faraday rotation could also allow the study of some properties of these fields. In this paper, we calculate the angular dependence of the Faraday rotation correlator for different assumptions about the spectral index and correlation length of the magnetic field. We show that the helical part of the magnetic field does not make any contribution to the correlator. We stress the importance of the angular resolution of the detector in the Faraday rotation measure, showing that it could severely reduce the effect, even for a relatively large magnetic field correlation length.

Fermion Scattering off a CP-violating Bubble Wall in the Background of a Uniform Magnetic Field

In the scenario of the electroweak baryogenesis we consider the dynamics of fermions with a spatially varying mass in presence of a CP-violating bubble wall and a uniform magnetic field perpendicular to the wall. The relevant quantity for baryogenesis, $R_{R \to L} - R_{L \to R}$, is studied ($R_{R \to L}$ and $R_{L \to R}$ being the reflection coefficients for right-handed and left-handed chiral fermions, respectively).

Charged Domain Walls

In this paper we investigate Charged Domain Walls (CDW's), topological defects that acquire surface charge density $Q$ induced by fermion states localized on the walls. The presence of an electric and magnetic field on the walls is also discussed. We find a relation in which the value of the surface charge density $Q$ is connected with the existence of such topological defects.

Gravitational Field of Static Thin Planar Walls in Weak-Field Approximation

We investigate gravitational properties of thin planar wall solutions of the Einstein's equations in the weak field approximation. We find the general metric solutions and discuss the behavior of a particle placed initially at rest to one side of the plane. Moreover we study the case of non-reflection-symmetric solutions.

Dynamics of Walls: Fermion Scattering in Magnetic Field

We investigate the scattering of fermions off walls in the presence of a magnetic field. We consider both the bubble wall and the kink domain wall. By solving the Dirac equation for fermions in the presence of a domain wall in an external magnetic field, we investigate the dependence on the magnetic field of the transmission and reflection coefficients. In the case of kink domain wall, we also consider the solutions localized on the wall. The possibile role of the ferromagnetic domain walls in the dynamics of the early Universe is also discussed.
