Transcendental Infinite Products Associated with the $\pm 1$ Thue-Morse Sequence

Infinite products associated with the $\pm 1$ Thue-Morse sequence whose value is rational or algebraic irrational have been studied by several authors. In this short note we prove three new infinite product identities involving $π$, $\sqrt{2}$, and the $\pm 1$ Thue-Morse sequence, building on a result by Allouche, Riasat, and Shallit. We then use our method to find a new expression for a product appearing within the context of the Flajolet-Martin constant.

Applying Speech Tempo-Derived Features, BoAW and Fisher Vectors to Detect Elderly Emotion and Speech in Surgical Masks

The 2020 INTERSPEECH Computational Paralinguistics Challenge (ComParE) consists of three Sub-Challenges, where the tasks are to identify the level of arousal and valence of elderly speakers, determine whether the actual speaker wearing a surgical mask, and estimate the actual breathing of the speaker. In our contribution to the Challenge, we focus on the Elderly Emotion and the Mask sub-challenges. Besides utilizing standard or close-to-standard features such as ComParE functionals, Bag-of-Audio-Words and Fisher vectors, we exploit that emotion is related to the velocity of speech (i.e. speech rate). To utilize this, we perform phone-level recognition using an ASR system, and extract features from the output such as articulation tempo, speech tempo, and various attributes measuring the amount of pauses. We also hypothesize that wearing a surgical mask makes the speaker feel uneasy, leading to a slower speech rate and more hesitations; hence, we experiment with the same features in the Mask sub-challenge as well. Although this theory was not justified by the experimental results on the Mask Sub-Challenge, in the Elderly Emotion Sub-Challenge we got significantly improved arousal and valence values with this feature type both on the development set and in cross-validation.

Ultrasound-based Articulatory-to-Acoustic Mapping with WaveGlow Speech Synthesis

For articulatory-to-acoustic mapping using deep neural networks, typically spectral and excitation parameters of vocoders have been used as the training targets. However, vocoding often results in buzzy and muffled final speech quality. Therefore, in this paper on ultrasound-based articulatory-to-acoustic conversion, we use a flow-based neural vocoder (WaveGlow) pre-trained on a large amount of English and Hungarian speech data. The inputs of the convolutional neural network are ultrasound tongue images. The training target is the 80-dimensional mel-spectrogram, which results in a finer detailed spectral representation than the previously used 25-dimensional Mel-Generalized Cepstrum. From the output of the ultrasound-to-mel-spectrogram prediction, WaveGlow inference results in synthesized speech. We compare the proposed WaveGlow-based system with a continuous vocoder which does not use strict voiced/unvoiced decision when predicting F0. The results demonstrate that during the articulatory-to-acoustic mapping experiments, the WaveGlow neural vocoder produces significantly more natural synthesized speech than the baseline system. Besides, the advantage of WaveGlow is that F0 is included in the mel-spectrogram representation, and it is not necessary to predict the excitation separately.

Menon-type identities again: A note on a paper by Li, Kim and Qiao

We give common generalizations of the Menon-type identities by Sivaramakrishnan (1969) and Li, Kim, Qiao (2019). Our general identities involve arithmetic functions of several variables, and also contain, as special cases, identities for gcd-sum type functions. We point out a new Menon-type identity concerning the lcm function. We present a simple character free approach for the proof.

On Schizophrenic Patterns in b-ary Expansions of Some Irrational Numbers

In this paper we study the $b$-ary expansions of the square roots of the function defined by the recurrence $f_b(n)=b f_b(n-1)+n$ with initial value $f(0)=0$ taken at odd positive integers $n$, of which the special case $b=10$ is often referred to as the "schizophrenic" or "mock-rational" numbers. Defined by Darling in $2004$ and studied in more detail by Brown in $2009$, these irrational numbers have the peculiarity of containing long strings of repeating digits within their decimal expansion. The main contribution of this paper is the extension of schizophrenic numbers to all integer bases $b\geq2$ by formally defining the schizophrenic pattern present in the $b$-ary expansion of these numbers and the study of the lengths of the non-repeating and repeating digit sequences that appear within.

On certain sums concerning the gcd's and lcm's of $k$ positive integers

We use elementary arguments to prove results on the order of magnitude of certain sums concerning the gcd's and lcm's of $k$ positive integers, where $k\ge 2$ is fixed. We refine and generalize an asymptotic formula of Bordellès (2007), and extend certain related results of Hilberdink and Tóth (2016). We also formulate some conjectures and open problems.

Unitary cyclotomic polynomials

The notion of block divisibility naturally leads one to introduce unitary cyclotomic polynomials. We formulate some basic properties of unitary cyclotomic polynomials and study how they are connected with cyclotomic, inclusion-exclusion and Kronecker polynomials. Further, we derive some related arithmetic function identities involving the unitary analog of the Dirichlet convolution.

Counting subrings of the ring $\Bbb{Z}_m \times \Bbb{Z}_n$

Let $m,n\in \Bbb{N}$. We represent the additive subgroups of the ring $\Bbb{Z}_m \times \Bbb{Z}_n$, which are also (unital) subrings, and deduce explicit formulas for $N^{(s)}(m,n)$ and $N^{(us)}(m,n)$, denoting the number of subrings of the ring $\Bbb{Z}_m \times \Bbb{Z}_n$ and its unital subrings, respectively. We show that the functions $(m,n)\mapsto N^{(s)}(m,n)$ and $(m,n)\mapsto N^{(us)}(m,n)$ are multiplicative, viewed as functions of two variables, and their Dirichlet series can be expressed in terms of the Riemann zeta function. We also establish an asymptotic formula for the sum $\sum_{m,n\le x} N^{(s)}(m,n)$, the error term of which is closely related to the Dirichlet divisor problem.

On The Asymptotic Density Of Prime k-tuples and a Conjecture of Hardy and Littlewood

In 1922 Hardy and Littlewood proposed a conjecture on the asymptotic density of admissible prime k-tuples. In 2011 Wolf computed the "Skewes number" for twin primes, i.e., the first prime at which a reversal of the Hardy-Littlewood inequality occurs. In this paper, we find "Skewes numbers" for 8 more prime k-tuples and provide numerical data in support of the Hardy-Littlewood conjecture. Moreover, we present several algorithms to compute such numbers.

Ultrasound-based Silent Speech Interface Built on a Continuous Vocoder

Recently it was shown that within the Silent Speech Interface (SSI) field, the prediction of F0 is possible from Ultrasound Tongue Images (UTI) as the articulatory input, using Deep Neural Networks for articulatory-to-acoustic mapping. Moreover, text-to-speech synthesizers were shown to produce higher quality speech when using a continuous pitch estimate, which takes non-zero pitch values even when voicing is not present. Therefore, in this paper on UTI-based SSI, we use a simple continuous F0 tracker which does not apply a strict voiced / unvoiced decision. Continuous vocoder parameters (ContF0, Maximum Voiced Frequency and Mel-Generalized Cepstrum) are predicted using a convolutional neural network, with UTI as input. The results demonstrate that during the articulatory-to-acoustic mapping experiments, the continuous F0 is predicted with lower error, and the continuous vocoder produces slightly more natural synthesized speech than the baseline vocoder using standard discontinuous F0.

Autoencoder-Based Articulatory-to-Acoustic Mapping for Ultrasound Silent Speech Interfaces

When using ultrasound video as input, Deep Neural Network-based Silent Speech Interfaces usually rely on the whole image to estimate the spectral parameters required for the speech synthesis step. Although this approach is quite straightforward, and it permits the synthesis of understandable speech, it has several disadvantages as well. Besides the inability to capture the relations between close regions (i.e. pixels) of the image, this pixel-by-pixel representation of the image is also quite uneconomical. It is easy to see that a significant part of the image is irrelevant for the spectral parameter estimation task as the information stored by the neighbouring pixels is redundant, and the neural network is quite large due to the large number of input features. To resolve these issues, in this study we train an autoencoder neural network on the ultrasound image; the estimation of the spectral speech parameters is done by a second DNN, using the activations of the bottleneck layer of the autoencoder network as features. In our experiments, the proposed method proved to be more efficient than the standard approach: the measured normalized mean squared error scores were lower, while the correlation values were higher in each case. Based on the result of a listening test, the synthesized utterances also sounded more natural to native speakers. A further advantage of our proposed approach is that, due to the (relatively) small size of the bottleneck layer, we can utilize several consecutive ultrasound images during estimation without a significant increase in the network size, while significantly increasing the accuracy of parameter estimation.

Ramanujan expansions of arithmetic functions of several variables

We generalize certain recent results of Ushiroya concerning Ramanujan expansions of arithmetic functions of two variables. We also show that some properties on expansions of arithmetic functions of one and several variables using classical and unitary Ramanujan sums, respectively, run parallel.

On multivariable averages of divisor functions

We deduce asymptotic formulas for the sums $\sum_{n_1,\ldots,n_r\le x} f(n_1\cdots n_r)$ and $\sum_{n_1,\ldots,n_r\le x} f([n_1\cdots n_r])$, where $r\ge 2$ is a fixed integer, $[n_1,\ldots,n_r]$ stands for the least common multiple of the integers $n_1,\ldots,n_r$ and $f$ is one of the divisor functions $τ_{1,k}(n)$ ($k\ge 1$), $τ^{(e)}(n)$ and $τ^*(n)$. Our formulas refine and generalize a result of Lelechenko (2014). A new generalization of the Busche-Ramanujan identity is also pointed out.

Expansions of arithmetic functions of several variables with respect to certain modified unitary Ramanujan sums

We introduce new analogues of the Ramanujan sums, denoted by $\widetilde{c}_q(n)$, associated with unitary divisors, and obtain results concerning the expansions of arithmetic functions of several variables with respect to the sums $\widetilde{c}_q(n)$. We apply these results to certain functions associated with $σ^*(n)$ and $ϕ^*(n)$, representing the unitary sigma function and unitary phi function, respectively.

Menon-type identities concerning Dirichlet characters

Let $χ$ be a Dirichlet character (mod $n$) with conductor $d$. In a quite recent paper Zhao and Cao deduced the identity $\sum_{k=1}^n (k-1,n) χ(k)= φ(n)τ(n/d)$, which reduces to Menon's identity if $χ$ is the principal character (mod $n$). We generalize the above identity by considering even functions (mod $n$), and offer an alternative approach to proof. We also obtain certain related formulas concerning Ramanujan sums.

A Variation on Mills-Like Prime-Representing Functions

Mills showed that there exists a constant $A$ such that $\lfloor{A^{3^n}}\rfloor$ is prime for every positive integer $n$. Kuipers and Ansari generalized this result to $\lfloor{A^{c^n}}\rfloor$ where $c\in\mathbb{R}$ and $c\geq 2.106$. The main contribution of this paper is a proof that the function $\lceil{B^{c^n}}\rceil$ is also a prime-representing function, where $\lceil X\rceil$ denotes the ceiling or least integer function. Moreover, the first 10 primes in the sequence generated in the case $c=3$ are calculated. Lastly, the value of $B$ is approximated to the first $5500$ digits and is shown to begin with $1.2405547052\ldots$.

Inertia, positive definiteness and $\ell_p$ norm of GCD and LCM matrices and their unitary analogs

Let $S=\{x_1,x_2,\dots,x_n\}$ be a set of distinct positive integers, and let $f$ be an arithmetical function. The GCD matrix $(S)_f$ on $S$ associated with $f$ is defined as the $n\times n$ matrix having $f$ evaluated at the greatest common divisor of $x_i$ and $x_j$ as its $ij$ entry. The LCM matrix $[S]_f$ is defined similarly. We consider inertia, positive definiteness and $\ell_p$ norm of GCD and LCM matrices and their unitary analogs. Proofs are based on matrix factorizations and convolutions of arithmetical functions.
