Curvature of hyperbolic complex manifolds

The article addresses the construction and geography of negatively curved metrics on hyperbolic complex manifolds. We introduce a mechanism for constructing complete K\"ahler metrics with negative bisectional curvature. This applies to some product complex manifolds, thereby resolving a longstanding problem attributed to N. Mok. We then construct projective Kobayashi hyperbolic surfaces with negative holomorphic sectional curvature whose Chern slopes $c_1^2/c_2$ realize any $s \in \mathbf{Q} \cap \left( \frac{2}{7}, \frac{2}{3} \right)$. For slopes $s\in \mathbf{Q}\cap \left( \frac{2}{7},\frac{1}{3} \right)$, the corresponding surfaces admit a Hermitian metric with $\text{HSC}<0$, but their K\"ahler--Einstein metric cannot have $\text{HSC}<0$. We finally construct, for every $s \in \left( \frac{1}{2}, 3 \right)$, a sequence of projective Kobayashi hyperbolic surfaces that do not admit a Hermitian metric of nonpositive holomorphic sectional curvature, whose Chern slopes $c_1^2/c_2$ converge to $s$.

Cohomogeneity-one Einstein metrics on closed $4$-manifolds

We classify the Einstein metrics on closed 4-manifolds whose isometry group has dimension at least 3. Consequently, we show that the cohomogeneity-one Einstein metrics on a closed $4$-manifold are locally symmetric or homothetic to the Page metric on $\mathbf{CP}^2 \sharp \overline{\mathbf{CP}}^2$.

Holomorphic $p$-Contact and $s$-Symplectic Line Bundles

We generalise the notions of scalar-valued holomorphic $p$-contact and $s$-symplectic structures introduced recently on compact complex manifolds by the second-named author jointly with H. Kasuya and L. Ugarte to their analogues with values in a holomorphic line bundle. We then study the resulting holomorphic $p$-contact and $s$-symplectic manifolds which, unlike their scalar counterparts that are never K\"ahler, can even be projective. In particular, we investigate the (lack of) positivity properties of the canonical bundle of these manifolds when it is given a possibly singular Hermitian fibre metric. One of the tools used is a very recent regularisation result for $m$-psh functions obtained jointly by S. Dinew and the second-named author.

Hyperbolicity and Schwarz Lemmas in Calibrated Geometry

This paper has two main objectives. First, for an arbitrary calibrated manifold $(X,\phi)$, we define notions of $R_\phi$-hyperbolicity and $\phi$-hyperbolicity, which respectively generalize the notions of Kobayashi and Brody hyperbolicity from complex geometry. To make sense of the former, we introduce the "KR $\phi$-metric," a decreasing Finsler pseudo-metric that specializes to the Kobayashi-Royden pseudo-metric in the Kahler case. We prove that $R_\phi$-hyperbolicity implies $\phi$-hyperbolicity, and give examples showing that the converse fails in general. Moreover, for constant-coefficient, inner Mobius rigid calibrations $\phi$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$, we completely characterize those domains that are $\phi$-hyperbolic. Second, we derive a Schwarz lemma for Smith immersions (a.k.a. conformal $\phi$-curves) into an arbitrary calibrated manifold $(X, \phi)$, thereby extending the Schwarz lemma for holomorphic curves into Kahler manifolds. The relevant Bochner formula features the "$\phi$-sectional curvature," a new notion that includes both the scalar and holomorphic sectional curvatures as special cases. As an application, we prove that calibrated geometries with $\phi$-sectional curvature bounded above by a negative constant are $R_\phi$-hyperbolic, generalizing the corresponding result from complex geometry. As another application, we calculate the KR $\phi$-metric of real, complex, and quaternionic hyperbolic spaces equipped with their natural calibrations.

Vanishing theorems for Hodge numbers and the Calabi curvature operator

It is shown that a compact $n$-dimensional K\"ahler manifold with $\frac{n}{2}$-positive Calabi curvature operator has the rational cohomology of complex projective space. For even $n,$ this is sharp in the sense that the complex quadric with its symmetric metric has $\frac{n}{2}$-nonnegative Calabi curvature operator, yet $b_n =2.$ Furthermore, the compact K\"ahler manifolds with an $\frac{n}{2}$-nonnegative Calabi curvature operator are classified. In addition, the previously known results for the K\"ahler curvature operator are improved when the metric is K\"ahler--Einstein.

Weakly Special Manifolds with no rational curves

Assuming the abundance conjecture and the existence of a Zariski dense set of rational curves on terminal Calabi--Yau varieties, we show that a complex projective weakly special manifold $X$ with no rational curves is an \'etale quotient of an Abelian variety. The same conclusion holds true if $X$ contains a Zariski dense entire curve, assuming Lang's conjecture. This implies that any non-hyperbolic complex projective manifold contains the image of an Abelian variety, according to another conjecture of Lang. We illustrate this last conjecture by producing examples of canonically polarised submanifolds of abelian varieties containing no subvariety of general type, except for a finite number of disjoint copies of some simple abelian variety, which can be chosen arbitrarily. We also show, more generally, that any projective manifold containing a Zariski dense entire curve appears as the `exceptional set' in Lang's sense of some general type manifold.

Hermitian metrics with vanishing second Chern Ricci curvature

We describe a rigidity phenomenon exhibited by the second Chern Ricci curvature of a Hermitian metric on a compact complex manifold. This yields a characterisation of second Chern Ricci-flat Hermitian metrics on several types of manifolds as well as a range of non-existence results for such metrics.

A general Schwarz lemma for Hermitian manifolds

The Schwarz lemma for holomorphic maps between Hermitian manifolds is improved. New curvature constraints on the source and target manifolds are introduced and shown to be weaker than the Ricci and real bisectional curvature, respectively. The novel target curvature condition is intrinsic to the Hermitian structure and is controlled by the holomorphic sectional curvature if the metric is pluriclosed. This leads to significant improvements on the Wu--Yau theorem. Further, it is shown that the Schwarz lemma is largely invariant under a change of Hermitian connection, and the precise geometric quantity that varies with the connection is determined. This enables us to establish the Schwarz lemma for the Gauduchon connections.

Some Remarks on the Wu--Yau Theorem

The Wu--Yau theorem asserts that a compact K\"ahler manifold with negative holomorphic sectional curvature admits a cohomologous metric with negative Ricci curvature. We introduce a conjectural positive analog of the Wu--Yau theorem and present several examples verifying the conjecture. We also produce an abundance of examples of K\"ahler--Einstein metrics on K\"ahler surfaces of general type that do not have negative holomorphic sectional curvature. This begins to address a question raised by Diverio.

$(\varepsilon, \delta)$--Quasi-Negative Curvature and Positivity of the Canonical Bundle

A recent theorem of Diverio--Trapani and Wu--Yau asserts that a compact K\"ahler manifold with a K\"ahler metric of quasi-negative holomorphic sectional curvature is projective and canonically polarized. This confirms a long-standing conjecture of Yau. We consider the notion of $(\varepsilon,\delta)$--quasi-negativity, generalizing quasi-negativity, and obtain gap-type theorems for $\int_X c_1(K_X)^n>0$ in terms of the real bisectional curvature and weighted orthogonal Ricci curvature. These theorems are also a generalization of that results in \cite{ZhangZheng} by Zhang-Zheng and in \cite{ChuLeeTam} by Chu-Lee-Tam.

On the Gauduchon Curvature of Hermitian Manifolds

It is shown that many results, previously believed to be properties of the Lichnerowicz Ricci curvature, hold for the Ricci curvature of all Gauduchon connections. We prove the existence of $t$--Gauduchon Ricci-flat metrics on the suspension of a compact Sasaki--Einstein manifold, for all $t \in (-\infty,1)$; in particular, for the Bismut, Minimal, and Hermitian conformal connection. A monotonicity theorem is obtained for the Gauduchon holomorphic sectional curvature, illustrating a maximality property for the Chern connection and furnishing insight into known phenomena concerning hyperbolicity and the existence of rational curves. Moreover, we show a rigidity result for Hermitian metrics which have a pair of Gauduchon holomorphic sectional curvatures that are equal, elucidating a duality implicit in the recent work of Chen--Nie.

Remarks on the Quadratic Orthogonal Bisectional Curvature

We exhibit a curious link between the Quadratic Orthogonal Bisectional Curvature, combinatorics, and distance geometry. The Weitzenb\"ock curvature operator, acting on real (1,1)--forms, is realized as the Dirichlet energy of a finite graph, weighted by a matrix of the curvature. These results also illuminate the difference in the nature of the Quadratic Orthogonal Bisectional Curvature and the Real Bisectional Curvature.

On Hermitian manifolds with vanishing curvature

We show that Hermitian metrics with vanishing holomorphic curvature on compact complex manifolds with pseudoeffective canonical bundle are conformally balanced. Pluriclosed metrics with vanishing holomorphic curvature on compact K\"ahler manifolds are shown to be K\"ahler and hence, are completely classified. We prove that Hermitian metrics with vanishing real bisectional curvature on complex manifolds in the Fujiki class C are K\"ahler and thus fall under the same classification. Finally, we formalize the notion of `altered' curvatures, which force distinguished metric structures when mandated to coincide with their `standard' counterparts.

On the weighted orthogonal Ricci curvature

We introduce the weighted orthogonal Ricci curvature -- a two-parameter version of Ni--Zheng's orthogonal Ricci curvature. This curvature serves as a very natural object in the study of the relationship between the Ricci curvature(s) and the holomorphic sectional curvature. In particular, in determining optimal curvature constraints for a compact K\"ahler manifold to be projective. In this direction, we prove a number of vanishing theorems using the weighted orthogonal Ricci curvature(s) in both the K\"ahler and Hermitian category.

The Schwarz lemma in K\"ahler and non-K\"ahler geometry

We introduce two new curvatures which refine and elucidate the real bisectional curvature considered by Yang-Zheng \cite{YangZheng}. A unified perspective of the various forms of the Schwarz lemma is given, leading to novel Chern-Lu, Aubin-Yau, and Chen-Cheng-Look Schwarz lemmas in both the K\"ahler and Hermitian category.

Second-order estimates for collapsed limits of Ricci-flat K\"ahler metrics

We show that the singularities of the twisted K\"ahler--Einstein metric arising as the long-time solution of the K\"ahler--Ricci flow or in the collapsed limit of Ricci-flat K\"ahler metrics is intimately related to the holomorphic sectional curvature of the reference conical geometry. This provides an alternative proof of the second-order estimate obtained by Gross--Tosatti--Zhang with explicit constants appearing in the divisorial pole.

Twisted K\"ahler-Einstein Metrics and Collapsing

We extend the arguments of Tosatti-Zhang to reduce a well-known conjecture concerning the structure of the Gromov-Hausdorff limit in both the setting of degenerating Calabi-Yau manifolds and the K\"ahler-Ricci flow to a certain partial second-order estimate.
