A detailed view at magnetic dipole strengths: The case of semi-magic $^{50}$Ti

Magnetic dipole, $M1$, strengths were studied in semi-magic $^{50}$Ti up to the neutron-separation threshold by combining data from $(d,p)$ one-neutron transfer, $(\gamma,\gamma')$ real-photon scattering, $(e,e')$ inelastic scattering at extreme backward angles, and $(p,p')$ at $E_p = 210$ MeV and extreme forward angles. The combination of all probes provided unique access to the neutron spin-flip contribution and the possibility to evaluate its role in generating the spin-flip $M1$ strengths. The small contribution of the neutron $(1f_{7/2})^{-1}(1f_{5/2})^{+1}$ spin-flip transitions, which were probed with the $(d,p)$ reaction, to the overall strength in $^{50}$Ti questions the standard picture for the microscopic origin of spin-flip strength in the $fp$ shell. For $^{50}$Ti, this letter shows that $J^{\pi} = 1^+$ states with larger neutron $(1f_{7/2})^{-1}(1f_{5/2})^{+1}$ spectroscopic factors do not correspond to the ones with the largest $B(M1;0^+_1 \rightarrow 1^+_i)$ strengths.

Gamma decay of the $^{154}$Sm Isovector Giant Dipole Resonance: Smekal-Raman Scattering as a Novel Probe of Nuclear Ground-State Deformation

Gamma decays of the isovector giant dipole resonance (GDR) of the deformed nucleus $^{154}$Sm from $2^+_1$-Smekal-Raman and elastic scattering were measured using linearly polarized, quasimonochromatic photon beams. The two scattering processes were disentangled through their distinct angular distributions. Their branching ratio and cross sections were determined at six excitation energies covering the $^{154}$Sm GDR. Both agree with the predictions of the geometrical model for the GDR and establish $\gamma$ decay as an observable sensitive to the structure of the resonance. Consequently, the data place strong constraints on the nuclear shape, including the degree of triaxiality. The derived $^{154}$Sm shape parameters $\beta=0.2926(26)$ and $\gamma=5.0(14)$ agree well with other measurements and recent Monte Carlo Shell-Model calculations.

Neutral-current neutrino cross section and expected supernova signals for $^{40}$Ar from a three-fold increase in the magnetic dipole strength

In view of the great interest in liquid argon neutrino detectors, the $^{40}$Ar($\gamma,\gamma'$)$^{40}$Ar$^{*}$ reaction was revisited to guide a calculation of the neutral current neutrino cross section at supernova energies. Using the nuclear resonance fluorescence technique with a monoenergetic, 99% linearly polarized photon beam, we report a three-fold increase in magnetic dipole strength at around 10 MeV in $^{40}$Ar. Based on shell-model calculations, and using the experimentally identified transitions, the neutral current neutrino cross sections for low-energy reactions on $^{40}$Ar are calculated.

Model-independent determination of the dipole response of $^{66}$Zn using quasi-monoenergetic and linearly-polarized photon beams

[Background] Photon strength functions are an important ingredient in calculations relevant for the nucleosynthesis of heavy elements. The relation to the photoabsorption cross section allows to experimentally constrain photon strength functions by investigating the photo-response of atomic nuclei. [Purpose] We determine the photoresponse of $^{66}$Zn in the energy region of 5.6 MeV to 9.9 MeV and analyze the contribution of the "elastic" decay channel back to the ground state. In addition, for the elastic channel electric and magnetic dipole transitions were separated. [Methods] Nuclear resonance fluorescence experiments were performed using a linearly-polarized quasi-monoenergetic photon beam at the High Intensity $\gamma$-ray Source. Photon beam energies from 5.6 to 9.9 MeV with an energy spread of about 3% were selected in steps of 200-300 keV. Two High Purity Germanium detectors were used for the subsequent $\gamma$-ray spectroscopy. [Results] Full photoabsorption cross sections are extracted from the data making use of the monoenergetic character of the photon beam. For the ground-state decay channel, the average contribution of electric and magnetic dipole strengths is disentangled. The average branching ratio back to the ground state is determined as well. [Conclusions] The new results indicate lower cross sections when compared to the values extracted from a former experiment using bremsstrahlung on $^{66}$Zn. In the latter, the average branching ratio to the ground state is estimated from statistical-model calculations in order to analyze the data. Corresponding estimates from statistical-model calculations underestimate this branching ratio compared to the values extracted from the present analysis, which would partly explain the high cross sections determined from the bremsstrahlung data.

Investigation of $^{11}$B and $^{40}$Ca levels at 8-9 MeV by Nuclear Resonance Fluorescence

We report on the measurement of $^{11}$B and $^{40}$Ca levels between excitation energies of 8 and 9 MeV using nuclear resonance fluorescence (NRF). The experiment was carried out with nearly-monoenergetic and linearly polarized photon beams provided by the High-Intensity $\gamma$-ray Source (HI$\gamma$S) facility at the Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory (TUNL). States in $^{11}$B are important for calibrations of NRF measurements, while the properties of $^{40}$Ca levels impact potassium nucleosynthesis in globular clusters. For $^{40}$Ca, we report on improved excitation energies and an unambiguous $2^-$ assignment for the state at 8425 keV. For $^{11}$B, we obtained improved values for $\gamma$-ray multipolarity mixing ratios and branching ratios of the 8920 keV level.

Shape Coexistence at Zero Spin in 64Ni Driven by the Monopole Tensor Interaction

The low-spin structure of the semimagic 64Ni nucleus has been considerably expanded: combining four experiments, several 0+ and 2+ excited states were identified below 4.5 MeV, and their properties established. The Monte Carlo shell model accounts for the results and unveils an unexpectedly complex landscape of coexisting shapes: a prolate 0+ excitation is located at a surprisingly high energy (3463 keV), with a collective 2+ state 286 keV above it, the first such observation in Ni isotopes. The evolution in excitation energy of the prolate minimum across the neutron N = 40 subshell gap highlights the impact of the monopole interaction and its variation in strength with N.

Evidence for rigid triaxial deformation in $^{76}$Ge from a model-independent analysis

An extensive, model-independent analysis of the nature of triaxial deformation in $^{76}$Ge, a candidate for neutrinoless double-beta ($0\nu\beta\beta$) decay, was carried out following multi-step Coulomb excitation. Shape parameters deduced on the basis of a rotational-invariant sum-rule analysis provided considerable insight into the underlying collectivity of the ground-state and $\gamma$ bands. Both sequences were determined to be characterized by the same $\beta$ and $\gamma$ deformation parameter values. In addition, compelling evidence for low-spin, rigid triaxial deformation in $^{76}$Ge was obtained for the first time from the analysis of the statistical fluctuations of the quadrupole asymmetry deduced from the measured $E2$ matrix elements. These newly determined shape parameters are important input and constraints for calculations aimed at providing, with suitable accuracy, the nuclear matrix elements relevant to $0\nu\beta\beta$.

Shape coexistence in 153Ho

The high-spin states in 153Ho, have been studied by 139 57 La(20Ne, 6n) reaction at a projectile energy of 139 MeV at Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre (VECC), Kolkata, India, utilizing an earlier campaign of Indian National Gamma Array (INGA) setup. Data from gamma-gamma coincidence, directional correlation and polarization measurements have been analyzed to assign and confirm the spins and parities of the levels. We have suggested a few additions and revisions of the reported level scheme of 153Ho. The RF-gamma time difference spectra have been useful to confirm the half-life of an isomer in this nucleus. From the comparison of experimental and theoretical results, it is found that there are definite indications of shape coexistence in this nucleus. The experimental and calculated lifetimes of several isomers have been compared to follow the coexistence and evolution of shape with increasing spin.

Linear Polarization Measurements for High-Spin States in 146Gd

A γ-ray linear polarization measurement has been performed to directly determine the parities for the levels in 146Gd nucleus. High-spin states in this nucleus were populated in a reaction 115In + 34S at 140 MeV incident energy. Linearly polarized γ - rays emitted from oriented states were measured using a Compton polarimeter consisting of an array of 8 Compton-suppressed Clover detectors. Unambiguous assignments of the spin and parity have been made for most of the observed levels and changes made in the previously reported spin-parity assignments for a few levels. Shell model calculations performed with judicious truncation over the π(gdsh) valence space interpret the structure of only the low-lying levels up to Jπ = 19+ and 9-. N = 82 neutron-core breaking is found to be essential for high spin states with excitation energies Ex > 7 MeV.

Level Structure of 103Ag at high spins

High spin states in $^{103}$Ag were investigated with the Gammasphere array, using the $^{72}$Ge($^{35}$Cl,$2p2n$)$^{103}$Ag reaction at an incident beam energy of 135 MeV. A $ΔJ$=1 sequence with predominantly magnetic transitions and two nearly-degenerate $ΔJ=1$ doublet bands have been observed. The dipole band shows a decreasing trend in the $B(M1)$ strength as function of spin, a well established feature of magnetic bands. The nearly-degenerate band structures satisfy the three experimental signatures of chirality in the nuclei; however microscopic calculations are indicative of a magnetic phenomenon

High-spin structure and Band Termination in $^{103}$Cd

Excited states of the neutron deficient $^{103}$Cd nucleus have been investigated via the $^{72}$Ge($^{35}$Cl, p3n) reaction at beam energy of 135 MeV by use of in-beam spectroscopic methods. Gamma rays depopulating the excited states were detected using the Gammasphere spectrometer with high-fold $γ$-ray coincidences. A quadrupole $γ$-ray coincidence analysis ($γ^{4}$) has been used to extend the known level scheme. The positive parity levels have been established up to $J = 35/2\hbar$ and $E_{x} = 7.071$ MeV. In addition to the observation of highly-fragmented level scheme belonging to the positive-parity sequences at E$_{x}\sim$ 5 MeV, the termination of a negative-parity sequence connected by $E2$ transitions has been established at $J = 47/2 \hbar$ and $E_{x} = 11.877$ MeV. The experimental results corresponding to both the positive- and negative-parity sequences have been theoretically interpreted in the framework of the core particle coupling model. Evidence is presented for a shape change from collective prolate to non-collective oblate above the $J^π = 39/2^{-}$ (8011 keV) level and for a smooth termination of the negative-parity band.
