Some Remarks on the Operator T^*T

This note deals with the operator $T^*T$, where $T$ is a densely defined operator on a complex Hilbert space. We reprove a recent result of Z. Sebestyén and Zs. Tarcsay [13]: If $T^*T$ and $TT^*$ are self-adjoint, then $T$ is closed. In addition, we describe the Friedrichs extension of $S^2$, where $S$ is a symmetric operator, recovering results due to Yu. Arlinskiĭ and Yu. Kovalev [1], [2].

On the infinite-dimensional moment problem

This paper deals with the moment problem on a (not necessarily finitely generated) commutative unital real algebra $A$. We define moment functionals on $A$ as linear functionals which can be written as integrals over characters of $A$ with respect to cylinder measures. Our main results provide such integral representations for $A_+$--positive linear functionals (generalized Haviland theorem) and for positive functionals fulfilling Carleman conditions. As an application we solve the moment problem for the symmetric algebra $S(V)$ of a real vector space $V$. As a byproduct we obtain a new approaches to the moment problem on $S(V)$ for a nuclear space $V$ and to the integral decomposition of continuous positive functionals on a barrelled nuclear topological algebra $A$.

The multidimensional truncated Moment Problem: Carathéodory Numbers

Let $\mathcal{A}$ be a finite-dimensional subspace of $C(\mathcal{X};\mathbb{R})$, where $\mathcal{X}$ is a locally compact Hausdorff space, and $\mathsf{A}=\{f_1,\dots,f_m\}$ a basis of $\mathcal{A}$. A sequence $s=(s_j)_{j=1}^m$ is called a moment sequence if $s_j=\int f_j(x) \, dμ(x)$, $j=1,\dots,m$, for some positive Radon measure $μ$ on $\mathcal{X}$. Each moment sequence $s$ has a finitely atomic representing measure $μ$. The smallest possible number of atoms is called the Carathéodory number $\mathcal{C}_{\mathsf{A}}(s)$. The largest number $\mathcal{C}_{\mathsf{A}}(s)$ among all moment sequences $s$ is the Carathéodory number $\mathcal{C}_{\mathsf{A}}$. In this paper the Carathéodory numbers $\mathcal{C}_{\mathsf{A}}(s)$ and $\mathcal{C}_{\mathsf{A}}$ are studied. In the case of differentiable functions methods from differential geometry are used. The main emphasis is on real polynomials. For a large class of spaces of polynomials in one variable the number $\mathcal{C}_{\mathsf{A}}$ is determined. In the multivariate case we obtain some lower bounds and we use results on zeros of positive polynomials to derive upper bounds for the Carathéodory numbers.

The multidimensional truncated Moment Problem: Atoms, Determinacy, and Core Variety

This paper is about the moment problem on a finite-dimensional vector space of continuous functions. We investigate the structure of the convex cone of moment functionals (supporting hyperplanes, exposed faces, inner points) and treat various important special topics on moment functionals (determinacy, set of atoms of representing measures, core variety).

Unbounded Operators on Hilbert $C^*$-Modules

Let $E$ and $F$ be Hilbert $C^*$-modules over a $C^*$-algebra $\CAlg{A}$. New classes of (possibly unbounded) operators $t:E\to F$ are introduced and investigated. Instead of the density of the domain $\Def(t)$ we only assume that $t$ is essentially defined, that is, $\Def(t)^\bot=\{0\}$. Then $t$ has a well-defined adjoint. We call an essentially defined operator $t$ graph regular if its graph $\Graph(t)$ is orthogonally complemented in $E\oplus F$ and orthogonally closed if $\Graph(t)^{\bot\bot}=\Graph(t)$. A theory of these operators is developed. Various characterizations of graph regular operators are given. A number of examples of graph regular operators are presented ($E=C_0(X)$, a fraction algebra related to the Weyl algebra, Toeplitz algebra, Heisenberg group). A new characterization of affiliated operators with a $C^*$-algebra in terms of resolvents is given.

A general fibre theorem for moment problems and some applications

The fibre theorem \cite{schm2003} for the moment problem on closed semi-algebraic subsets of $\R^d$ is generalized to finitely generated real unital algebras. As an application two new theorems on the rational multidimensional moment problem are proved. Another application is a characterization of moment functionals on the polynomial algebra $\R[x_1,\dots,x_d]$ in terms of extensions. Finally, the fibre theorem and the extension theorem are used to reprove basic results on the complex moment problem due to Stochel and Szafraniec \cite{stochelsz} and Bisgaard \cite{bisgaard}.

Flat extensions in *-algebras

The main result of the paper is a flat extension theorem for positive linear functionals on *-algebras. The theorem is applied to truncated moment problems on cylinder sets, on matrices of polynomials and on enveloping algebras of Lie algebras.

A characterization of moment sequences by extensions

Transition Probabilities of Positive Linear Functionals on $*$-Algebras

Using unbounded Hilbert space representations basic results on the transition probability of positive linear functionals $f$ and $g$ on a unital *-algebra are obtained. The main assumption is the essential self-adjointness of GNS representations $π_f$ and $π_g$. Applications to functionals given by density matrices and by integrals and to vector functionals on the Weyl algebra are given.

A Resolvent Approach to the Real Quantum Plane

Let $q\neq \pm 1$ be a complex number of modulus one. This paper deals with the operator relation $AB=qBA$ for self-adjoint operators $A$ and $B$ on a Hilbert space. Two classes of well-behaved representations of this relation are studied in detail and characterized by resolvent equations.

Spectral theory of Schrödinger operators with infinitely many point interactions and radial positive definite functions

A number of results on radial positive definite functions on ${\mathbb R^n}$ related to Schoenberg's integral representation theorem are obtained. They are applied to the study of spectral properties of self-adjoint realizations of two- and three-dimensional Schrödinger operators with countably many point interactions. In particular, we find conditions on the configuration of point interactions such that any self-adjoint realization has purely absolutely continuous non-negative spectrum. We also apply some results on Schrödinger operators to obtain new results on completely monotone functions.

On $q$-normal operators and quantum complex plane

For $q>0$ let $\cA$ denote the unital $\ast$-algebra with generator $x$ and defining relation $xx^\ast=qxx^\ast$. Based on this algebra we study $q$-normal operators, the complex $q$-moment problem, positive elements and sums of squares.

Positivstellensätze for Algebras of Matrices

The paper is concerned with various types of noncommutative Positivstellensätze for the matrix algebra $M_n(\cA)$, where $\cA$ is an algebra of operators acting on a unitary space, a path algebra, a cyclic algebra or a formally real field. Some new types of Positivstellensätze are proposed and proved, it is shown by examples that they occur. There are a number of results stating that a type of Positivstellensatz is valid for $M_n(\cA)$ provided that it holds for $\cA$.

Multivariate Determinateness

The uniqueness question of the multivariate moment problem is studied by different methods: Hilbert space operators, complex function theory, polynomial approximation, disintegration, integral geometry. Most of the known results in the multi-dimensional case are reviewed and reproved, and a number of new determinacy criteria are developed.
