Building intuition for Quantum Algorithms using the Aharonov-Bohm effect

Quantum computers operate in a manner so different from classical computers that our intuitions for understanding the process of quantum computation is challenged. This not only makes it hard to develop new quantum algorithms, it also makes quantum computation a difficult subject for students to enter. Here we show that the time evolution of a particle on a ring with a coil through performs the key quantum algorithm known as Quantum Phase Estimation. The example uses the Aharonov-Bohm effect, and the aim is to help students build a physical intuition for quantum algorithms.

Wilson chiral perturbation theory, Wilson-Dirac operator eigenvalues and clover improvement

Chiral perturbation theory for eigenvalue distributions, and equivalently random matrix theory, has recently been extended to include lattice effects for Wilson fermions. We test the predictions by comparison to eigenvalue distributions of the Hermitian Wilson-Dirac operator from pure gauge (quenched) ensembles. We show that the lattice effects are diminished when using clover improvement for the Dirac operator. We demonstrate that the leading Wilson low-energy constants associated with Wilson (clover) fermions can be determined using spectral information of the respective Dirac operator at finite volume.

Mean field theory of effective spin models as a baryon fugacity expansion

The free energy of effective spin or "Polyakov line" models with a chemical potential, based on the U(N) group, does not depend on the chemical potential. In a mean field-inspired expansion, we show how the condition of unit determinant, taking U(N) to SU(N), reintroduces the chemical potential, and allows us to express the free energy, as a function of mean field variational parameters, in terms of an expansion in the baryon (rather than the quark) fugacity at each lattice site. We solve the SU(3) mean field equations numerically to determine the phase diagram and compute observables. We also calculate the first corrections to the leading order mean field results, and find that these can significantly shift the endpoint of a line of first order transitions. The problem of deriving an effective spin model from full QCD is discussed.

The sign problem across the QCD phase transition

The average phase factor of the QCD fermion determinant signals the strength of the QCD sign problem. We compute the average phase factor as a function of temperature and baryon chemical potential using a two-flavor NJL model. This allows us to study the strength of the sign problem at and above the chiral transition. It is discussed how the $U_A(1)$ anomaly affects the sign problem. Finally, we study the interplay between the sign problem and the endpoint of the chiral transition.
