ffsim: Faster simulation of fermionic quantum circuits

We present ffsim, an open-source software library for fast simulation of fermionic quantum circuits. ffsim exploits conservation of particle number and the z component of spin, symmetries present in a wide range of fermionic systems, to dramatically reduce memory usage and simulation time compared to general-purpose quantum circuit simulators. Compared to FQE, a library with similar functionality, ffsim differs in software design and is faster on a representative set of simulation benchmarks. Beyond state vector evolution by basic fermionic gates, ffsim offers a number of additional features including variational ansatzes, Hamiltonian time evolution via Trotter-Suzuki product formulas, efficient sampling of Slater determinants, seamless integration with Qiskit and PySCF, and comprehensive documentation. We demonstrate ffsim's capabilities on scientific applications involving quantum circuits of up to 64 qubits.

Closed-loop calculations of electronic structure on a quantum processor and a classical supercomputer at full scale

Quantum computers must operate in concert with classical computers to deliver on the promise of quantum advantage for practical problems. To achieve that, it is important to understand how quantum and classical computing can interact together, and how one can characterize the scalability and efficiency of hybrid quantum-classical workflows. So far, early experiments with quantum-centric supercomputing workflows have been limited in scale and complexity. Here, we use a Heron quantum processor deployed on premises with the entire supercomputer Fugaku to perform the largest computation of electronic structure involving quantum and classical high-performance computing. We design a closed-loop workflow between the quantum processors and 152,064 classical nodes of Fugaku, to approximate the electronic structure of chemistry models beyond the reach of exact diagonalization, with accuracy comparable to some all-classical approximation methods. Our work pushes the limits of the integration of quantum and classical high-performance computing, showcasing computational resource orchestration at the largest scale possible for current classical supercomputers.

Optimizing Ansatz Design in Quantum Generative Adversarial Networks Using Large Language Models

We present a novel approach for improving the design of ansatzes in Quantum Generative Adversarial Networks (qGANs) by leveraging Large Language Models (LLMs). By combining the strengths of LLMs with qGANs, our approach iteratively refines ansatz structures to improve accuracy while reducing circuit depth and the number of parameters. This study paves the way for further exploration in AI-driven quantum algorithm design. The flexibility of our proposed workflow extends to other quantum variational algorithms, providing a general framework for optimizing quantum circuits in a variety of quantum computing tasks.

Error Distribution for One-Dimensional Stochastic Differential Equation Driven By Fractional Brownian Motion

This paper deals with asymptotic errors, limit theorems for errors between numerical and exact solutions of stochastic differential equation (SDE) driven by one-dimensional fractional Brownian motion (fBm). The Euler-Maruyama, higher-order Milstein, and Crank-Nicolson schemes are among the most studied numerical schemes for SDE (fSDE) driven by fBm. Most previous studies of asymptotic errors have derived specific asymptotic errors for these schemes as main theorems or their corollary. Even in the one-dimensional case, the asymptotic error was not determined for the Milstein or the Crank-Nicolson method when the Hurst exponent is less than or equal to $1/3$ with a drift term. We obtained a new evaluation method for convergence and asymptotic errors. This evaluation method improves the conditions under which we can prove convergence of the numerical scheme and obtain the asymptotic error under the same conditions. We have completely determined the asymptotic error of the Milstein method for arbitrary orders. In addition, we have newly determined the asymptotic error of the Crank-Nicolson method for $1/4<H\leq 1/3$.

Observation of nonlocal Josephson effect on double InAs nanowires

Short-range coherent coupling of two Josephson junctions (JJs) are predicted to generate a supercurrent in one JJ nonlocally modulated by the phase difference in the other. We report on observation of the nonlocal Josephson effect on double InAs nanowires as experimental evidence of the coherent coupling. We measured one JJ sharing one superconducting electrode with the other JJ and observed switching current oscillation as a control of the nonlocal phase difference. Our result is an important step toward engineering of novel superconducting phenomena with the short-range coherent coupling.

Quasiparticle trapping at vortices producing Josephson supercurrent enhancement

The Josephson junction of a strong spin-orbit material under a magnetic field is a promising Majorana fermion candidate. Supercurrent enhancement by a magnetic field has been observed in the InAs nanowire Josephson junctions and assigned to a topological transition. In this work we observe a similar phenomenon but discuss the non-topological origin by considering trapping of quasiparticles by vortices that penetrate the superconductor under a finite magnetic field. This assignment is supported by the observed hysteresis of the switching current when sweeping up and down the magnetic field. Our experiment shows the importance of quasiparticles in superconducting devices with a magnetic field, which can provide important insights for the design of quantum qubits using superconductors.

Half-Integer Shapiro Steps in a Short Ballistic InAs Nanowire Josephson Junction

We report on half-integer Shapiro steps observed in an InAs nanowire Josephson junction. We observed the Shapiro steps of the short ballistic InAs nanowire Josephson junction and found anomalous half-integer steps in addition to the conventional integer steps. The half-integer steps disappear as the temperature increases or transmission of the junction decreases. These experimental results agree closely with numerical calculation of the Shapiro response for the skewed current phase relation in a short ballistic Josephson junction.

Strong Electron-Electron Interactions of a Tomonaga--Luttinger Liquid Observed in InAs Quantum Wires

We report strong electron-electron interactions in quantum wires etched from an InAs quantum well, a material known to have strong spin-orbit interactions. We find that the current through the wires as a function of the bias voltage and temperature follows the universal scaling behavior of a Tomonaga--Luttinger liquid. Using a universal scaling formula, we extract the interaction parameter and find strong electron-electron interactions, increasing as the wires become more depleted. We establish theoretically that spin-orbit interactions cause only minor modifications of the interaction parameter in this regime, indicating that genuinely strong electron-electron interactions are indeed achieved in the device. Our results suggest that etched InAs wires provide a platform with both strong electron-electron and strong spin-orbit interactions.

Dominant non-local superconducting proximity effect due to electron-electron interaction in a ballistic double nanowire

Cooper pair splitting (CPS) can induce non-local correlation between two normal conductors coupling to a superconductor. CPS into a double one-dimensional electron gas is an appropriate platform for extracting large amount of entangled electron pairs and one of the key ingredients for engineering Majorana Fermions with no magnetic field. Here we study CPS using a Josephson junction of a gate-tunable ballistic InAs double nanowire. The measured switching current into the two nanowires significantly larger than sum of that into the respective nanowires, indicating the inter-wire superconductivity dominant compared to the intra-wire superconductivity. From dependence on the number of propagating channels in the nanowires, the observed CPS is assigned to one-dimensional electron-electron interaction. Our results will pave the way for utilizing one-dimensional electron-electron interaction to reveal physics of high-efficient CPS and engineer Majorana Fermions in double nanowire systems via CPS.

Equal-Spin Andreev Reflection in Junctions of Spin-Resolved Quantum Hall Bulk State and Spin-Singlet Superconductor

The recent development of superconducting spintronics has revealed the spin-triplet superconducting proximity effect from a spin-singlet superconductor into a spin-polarized normal metal. In addition recently superconducting junctions using semiconductors are in demand for highly controlled experiments to engineer topological superconductivity. Here we report experimental observation of Andreev reflection in junctions of spin-resolved quantum Hall (QH) states in an InAs quantum well and the spin-singlet superconductor NbTi. The measured conductance indicates a sub-gap feature and two peaks on the outer side of the sub-gap feature in the QH plateau-transition regime increases. The observed structures can be explained by considering transport with Andreev reflection from two channels, one originating from equal-spin Andreev reflection intermediated by spin-flip processes and second arising from normal Andreev reflection. This result indicates the possibility to induce the superconducting proximity gap in the the QH bulk state, and the possibility for the development of superconducting spintronics in semiconductor devices.
