Admissible Invariant-Torus Foliations for Steady Euler Flows

In 1965, V. I. Arnold established a structure theorem guaranteeing the existence of a foliation by invariant surfaces for general three-dimensional steady Euler flows with non-constant pressure. In this paper, we investigate what foliation structures can arise in steady Euler flows. We consider a toroidal domain foliated by the level sets of a flux function $\Psi$, and prove that every $C^{1}$ steady Euler flow $(\boldsymbol{u},p)$ satisfying the assumptions $\iota_{\boldsymbol{u}}d\Psi=0$ and $p=p(\Psi)$ admits the tangential flow representation \[\boldsymbol{u}=c_1(\Psi)\boldsymbol{\xi}^{1}+c_2(\Psi)\boldsymbol{\xi}^{2},\] for some lifted solenoidal vector fields $\boldsymbol{\xi}^{1}$ and $\boldsymbol{\xi}^{2}$ associated with a natural basis of weighted harmonic one-forms on the toroidal leaves. Moreover, the flux function $\Psi$ satisfies a single scalar equation, referred to as the normal flux equation. These characterizations reveal the general foliation structure of steady Euler flows, with the Clebsch representation and the Grad--Shafranov equation recovered as the axisymmetric special case.

Minus one Homogeneous Euler Flows are Geodesible

In this paper, we study $(-1)$-homogeneous steady solutions to the Euler equations on $\mathbb{R}^n \setminus \{0\}$. In low dimensions $n=2,3$, such flows are known to be essentially trivial. In contrast, we show that in higher dimensions $n \ge 4$, every $(-1)$-homogeneous Euler flow is a geodesible vector field with constant Bernoulli function. Moreover, any $(-1)$-homogeneous geodesible field is induced by a geodesible field on the sphere $\mathbb{S}^{n-1}$. In particular, in the case $n=4$, every $(-1)$-homogeneous Euler flow is obtained as an extension of a Beltrami field on $\mathbb{S}^{3}$.

Homogeneous steady states for the generalized surface quasi-geostrophic equations

We consider homogeneous (stationary self-similar) solutions to the generalized surface quasi-geostrophic (gSQG) equations parametrized by the constant $0<s<1$, representing the 2D Euler equations ($s=1$), the SQG equations $(s=1/2)$, and stationary equations ($s=0$); namely, solutions whose stream function $\psi$ and advected scalar $\omega$ are of the form \begin{align*} \psi=\frac{w(\theta)}{r^{\beta}},\quad \omega=\frac{g(\theta)}{r^{\beta+2s}}, \end{align*} in polar coordinates $(r,\theta)$ with parameter $\beta\in \mathbb{R}$. We classify homogeneous steady states across the full parameter space, and we identify the limiting singular regimes assuming an odd symmetric profile $(w,g)$ with Fourier modes larger than $m_0\geq 1$. Specifically, we show existence of such solutions for $-m_0-2s<\beta<-2s$ and $0<\beta<m_0+2$ ($1/2-s<\beta< m_0+2$ for $0<s<1/2$) and non-existence of such solutions for $-2s\leq \beta\leq 0$. The main result provides examples of self-similar solutions which belong to critical and supercritical regimes for the local well-posedness of the gSQG equations for $0<s<1$ and the first examples of self-similar solutions for the SQG equations and the more singular equations $0<s\leq 1/2$ in the stationary setting. We also complement our findings with a numerical illustration of the solutions.

Stability of Lamb dipoles for odd-symmetric and non-negative initial disturbances without the finite mass condition

In this paper, we consider the stability of the Lamb dipole solution of the two-dimensional Euler equations in $\mathbb{R}^{2}$ and question under which initial disturbance the Lamb dipole is stable, motivated by experimental work on the formation of a large vortex dipole in two-dimensional turbulence. We assume (O) odd symmetry for the $x_2$-variable and (N) non-negativity in the upper half plane for the initial disturbance of vorticity, and establish the stability theorem of the Lamb dipole without assuming (F) finite mass condition. The proof is based on a new variational characterization of the Lamb dipole using an improved energy inequality.

Stability for multiple Lamb dipoles

In the class of nonnegative vorticities on the half-plane, we establish the Lyapunov stability of finite sums of Lamb dipoles under the initial assumptions that the dipoles are sufficiently separated and that the faster dipoles are positioned to the right of the slower ones. Our approach combines sharp energy estimates near the Lamb dipoles with a Lagrangian bootstrapping scheme, enabling us to quantify the exchanges of circulation, enstrophy, impulse, and energy between various parts of the solution. The strategy of the proof is robust, and we present several potential extensions of the result.

Existence and stability of Sadovskii vortices: from patch to smooth vortices

We establish a scaling-invariant variational framework for steadily translating dipoles of the two-dimensional incompressible Euler equations. Specifically, we consider the maximization of the kinetic energy subject to constraints on the impulse and the Lp-norm (1 4/3. By removing the mass constraint, we obtain a unified scaling-invariant variational principle valid for all 1<p\leq\infty. As a consequence of the variational structure, we establish a Lyapunov-type stability result, demonstrating that the axis-touching geometry persists under small perturbations. Finally, we derive a quantitative bound on the horizontal center of mass of perturbed solutions, showing that they propagate at nearly the same speed as the underlying Sadovskii vortex.

Topological Invariants in Higher-Dimensional Magnetohydrodynamics

It is well known that the three-dimensional ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equations possess three magnetic invariants: (M) magnetic helicity, (C) cross helicity, and (P) the mean-square magnetic potential, in addition to the fundamental invariants of fluid motion. In this paper we construct higher-dimensional generalizations of these invariants for ideal MHD. Specifically, we identify generalized magnetic helicity and generalized cross helicity in all odd spatial dimensions $n=2m+1$, and families of invariants given by integrals of arbitrary functions of the scalar density $B^m/\nu$ of the magnetic field $2$-form $B$, where $B^m$ denotes its $m$-fold wedge product and $\nu$ the fluid-density top form, in all even spatial dimensions $n=2m$. We further establish the existence of invariants for symmetric solutions in arbitrary dimensions, generalizing the mean-square magnetic potential and showing that this invariant arises from symmetry rather than from even dimensionality, in contrast to the enstrophy invariant of the two-dimensional Euler equations.

MHS equilibria in the non-resistive limit to the randomly forced resistive magnetic relaxation equations

We consider randomly forced resistive magnetic relaxation equations (MRE) with resistivity $\kappa>0$ and a force proportional to $\sqrt{\kappa}\ $ on the flat $d$-torus $\mathbb{T}^{d}$ for $d\geq 2$. We show the path-wise global well-posedness of the system and the existence of the invariant measures, and construct a random magnetohydrostatic (MHS) equilibrium $B(x)$ in $H^{1}(\mathbb{T}^{d})$ with law $D(B)=\mu$ as a non-resistive limit $\kappa\to 0$ of statistically stationary solutions $B_{\kappa}(x,t)$. For $d=2$, the measure $\mu$ does not concentrate on any compact sets in $H^{1}(\mathbb{T}^{2})$ with finite Hausdorff dimension. In particular, all realizations of the random MHS equilibrium $B(x)$ are almost surely not finite Fourier mode solutions.

Existence of homogeneous Euler flows of degree $-\alpha\notin [-2,0]$

We consider ($-\alpha$)-homogeneous solutions to the stationary incompressible Euler equations in $\mathbb{R}^{3}\backslash\{0\}$ for $\alpha\geq 0$ and in $\mathbb{R}^{3}$ for $\alpha<0$. Shvydkoy (2018) demonstrated the nonexistence of ($-1$)-homogeneous solutions and ($-\alpha$)-homogeneous solutions in the range $0\leq \alpha\leq 2$ for the Beltrami and axisymmetric flows. The nonexistence result of the Beltrami ($-\alpha$)-homogeneous solutions holds for all $\alpha<1$. We show the nonexistence of axisymmetric ($-\alpha$)-homogeneous solutions without swirls for $-2\leq \alpha<0$. The main result of this study is the existence of axisymmetric ($-\alpha$)-homogeneous solutions in the complementary range $\alpha\in \mathbb{R}\backslash [0,2]$. More specifically, we show the existence of axisymmetric Beltrami ($-\alpha$)-homogeneous solutions for $\alpha\in \mathbb{R}\backslash [0,2]$ and axisymmetric ($-\alpha$)-homogeneous solutions with a nonconstant Bernoulli function for $\alpha\in \mathbb{R}\backslash [-2,2]$. This is the first existence result on ($-\alpha$)-homogeneous solutions with no explicit forms. For $2<\alpha<3$, constructed ($-\alpha$)-homogeneous solutions provide new examples of the Beltrami/Euler flows in $\mathbb{R}^{3}\backslash\{0\}$ whose level sets of the proportionality factor/Bernoulli surfaces are nested surfaces created by the rotation of the sign $``\infty"$.

Stability of Chandrasekhar's nonlinear force-free fields

Chandrasekhar's nonlinear force-free field, discovered in 1956, is a rare example of a nonlinear force-free field describing a large coherent structure of axisymmetric magnetic field lines with swirls in the presence of Alfv\'en waves. We demonstrate that his traveling wave solution is orbitally stable with the energy norm in ideal MHD regarding weak ideal limits of axisymmetric Leray-Hopf solutions.

Existence of vortex rings in Beltrami flows

We construct traveling wave solutions to the 3d Euler equations by axisymmetric Beltrami fields with a non-constant proportionality factor. They form a vortex ring with nested invariant tori consisting of level sets of the proportionality factor.

On the large time $L^{\infty}$-estimates of the Stokes semigroup in two-dimensional exterior domains

We prove that the Stokes semigroup is a bounded analytic semigroup on $L^{\infty}_σ$ of angle $π/2$ for two-dimensional exterior domains. This result is an end point case of the $L^{p}$-boundedness of the semigroup for $p\in (1,\infty)$, established by Borchers and Varnhorn (1993) and an extension of finite time $L^{\infty}$-estimates studied by the author and Giga (2014). The proof is based on the non-existence result of bounded steady flows (the Stokes paradox) and some asymptotic formula for the net force of the Stokes resolvent.

Stability of Lamb dipoles

The Lamb dipole is a traveling wave solution to the two-dimensional Euler equations introduced by S. A. Chaplygin (1903) and H. Lamb (1906) at the early 20th century. We prove orbital stability of this solution based on a vorticity method initiated by V. I. Arnold. Our method is a minimization of a penalized energy with multiple constraints that deduces existence and orbital stability for a family of traveling waves. As a typical case, orbital stability of the Lamb dipole is deduced by characterizing a set of minimizers as an orbit of the dipole by a uniqueness theorem in the variational setting.

The vorticity equations in a half plane with measures as initial data

We consider the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations subject to the Dirichlet boundary condition in a half plane for initial vorticity with finite measures. We study local well-posedness of the associated vorticity equations for measures with a small pure point part and global well-posedness for measures with a small total variation. Our construction is based on an $L^{1}$-estimate of a solution operator for the vorticity equations associated with the Stokes equations.

Vanishing viscosity limits for axisymmetric flows with boundary

We construct global weak solutions of the Euler equations in an infinite cylinder $Π=\{x\in \mathbb{R}^{3}\ |\ x_h=(x_1,x_2),\ r=|x_h|<1\}$ for axisymmetric initial data without swirl when initial vorticity $ω_{0}=ω^θ_{0}e_θ$ satisfies $ω^θ_{0}/r\in L^{q}$ for $q\in [3/2,3)$. The solutions constructed are Hölder continuous for spatial variables in $\overlineΠ$ if in addition that $ω^θ_{0}/r\in L^{s}$ for $s\in (3,\infty)$ and unique if $s=\infty$. The proof is by a vanishing viscosity method. We show that the Navier-Stokes equations subject to the Neumann boundary condition is globally well-posed for axisymmetric data without swirl in $L^{p}$ for all $p\in [3,\infty)$. It is also shown that the energy dissipation tends to zero if $ω^θ_{0}/r\in L^{q}$ for $q\in [3/2,2]$, and Navier-Stokes flows converge to Euler flow in $L^{2}$ locally uniformly for $t\in [0,\infty)$ if additionally $ω^θ_{0}/r\in L^{\infty}$. The $L^{2}$-convergence in particular implies the energy equality for weak solutions.
