A geometric proof of Peck's theorem

Suppose that $d\ge 2$ and that $1,α_1,\ldots ,α_d$ is a basis for a real algebraic number field. A theorem of Peck from 1961 establishes that \[ \liminf_{n\rightarrow\infty}n\log n\,\|nα_1\|\cdots\|nα_d\|\ < \infty.\] The goal of this paper is to recast Peck's proof in an intuitive geometric framework, where the result follows from a single application of the Minkowski convex body theorem. We will also explain how a simple modification of this approach leads immediately to new proofs of results of de Mathan, Teulié, and Bugeaud regarding the $p$-adic Littlewood conjecture for $d$-tuples of algebraic numbers. Finally, changing the shape of the convex body allows us to make progress on a conjecture raised by Peck in the same paper, about distributing the logarithmic savings unequally among the coordinates. We prove the conjecture for every real biquadratic field with its natural basis, and for an arbitrary number field when the factors involved are of comparable size.

Counting $2\times 2$ matrices with fixed determinant and bounded coefficients

Recent work by M. Afifurrahman established the first asymptotic estimates with error terms for the number of $2\times 2$ matrices with fixed non-zero determinant $n\in\mathbb{N}$, and with coefficients bounded in absolute value by $X$. In this paper we present a new proof of this result, which also gives an improved error term as $X\rightarrow\infty$. Similar to Afifurrahman's result, our error term is uniform in both $n$ and $X$, and our estimates are significant for $X$ as small as $n^{1/2+δ}$. To complement this, we also demonstrate that the exponent $1/2+δ$ in this statement cannot be reduced, by establishing a result which gives a different asymptotic main term when $n$ is either a prime or the square of a prime, and when $X=n^{1/2}$.

Accumulation points of normalized approximations

Building on classical aspects of the theory of Diophantine approximation, we consider the collection of all accumulation points of normalized integer vector translates of points $qα$ with $α\in\mathbb{R}^d$ and $q\in\mathbb{Z}$. In the first part of the paper we derive measure theoretic and Hausdorff dimension results about the set of $α$ whose accumulation points are all of $\mathbb{R}^d$. In the second part we focus primarily on the case when the coordinates of $α$ together with $1$ form a basis for an algebraic number field $K$. Here we show that, under the correct normalization, the set of accumulation points displays an ordered geometric structure which reflects algebraic properties of the underlying number field. For example, when $d=2$, this collection of accumulation points can be described as a countable union of dilates (by norms of elements of an order in $K$) of a single ellipse, or of a pair of hyperbolas, depending on whether or not $K$ has a non-trivial embedding into $\mathbb{C}$.
