Thickness-dependent degradation and optical access in epitaxial 2H-MoTe2 protected by metallic capping layers

We investigate degradation and surface protection of epitaxial 2H-MoTe2 films grown by molecular beam epitaxy on GaAs(111)B substrates. Using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning tunneling microscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM), Kelvin probe microscopy (KPM), Raman spectroscopy, and density functional theory (DFT), we examine the structural, chemical, and electronic evolution of MoTe2 protected by Co and Ni capping layers. XPS shows that the metallic caps effectively suppress oxidation during short-term air transfer, while revealing a pronounced Te-rich near-surface composition. With time, the caps become increasingly difficult to remove, suggesting gradual interfacial bonding promoted by excess tellurium and defect-rich MoTe2 interfaces. AFM and KPM reveal pronounced thickness-dependent ageing, with ultrathin regions showing markedly different contact-potential evolution from thicker films. DFT calculations support the sensitivity of work function and density of states to thickness and surface chemistry. Raman measurements through approximately 20 nm thick metallic caps demonstrate partial optical access to the protected material. Additional AFM and Raman observations suggest local formation of Te-rich nanostructures under laser illumination or near mechanically damaged regions. These results provide practical guidelines for protecting, transferring, delaminating, and optically characterizing air-sensitive MoTe2 and related van der Waals materials.

Spin-orbit and exchange proximity couplings in graphene/1T-TaS$_2$ heterostructure triggered by a charge density wave

Proximity-induced fine features and spin-textures of the electronic bands in graphene-based van der Waals heterostructures can be explored from the point of tailoring a twist angle. Here we study spin-orbit coupling and exchange coupling engineering of graphene states in the proximity of 1T-TaS$_2$ not triggering the twist, but a charge density wave in 1T-TaS$_2$-a realistic low-temperature phase. Using density functional theory and effective model we found that the emergence of the charge density wave in 1T-TaS$_2$ significantly enhances Rashba spin-orbit splitting in graphene and tilts the spin texture by a significant Rashba angle-in a very similar way as in the conventional twist-angle scenarios. Moreover, the partially filled Ta $d$-band in the charge density wave phase leads to the spontaneous emergence of the in-plane magnetic order that transgresses via proximity from 1T-TaS$_2$ to graphene, hence, simultaneously superimposing along the spin-orbit also the exchange coupling proximity effect. To describe this intricate proximity landscape we have developed an effective model Hamiltonian and provided a minimal set of parameters that excellently reproduces all the spectral features predicted by the first-principles calculations. Conceptually, the charge density wave provides a highly interesting knob to control the fine features of electronic states and to tailor the superimposed proximity effects-a sort of twistronics without twist.

Ferrimagnetic and antiferromagnetic phase in bilayer graphene nanoflake controlled with external electric fields

The paper presents a computational study of the ground-state magnetic phases of a selected bilayer graphene nanoflake in external electric field and magnetic field. The electric field has parallel and perpendicular component while the magnetic field is oriented in plane. The system consists of two rectangular layers having armchair edges and zigzag terminations with Bernal stacking. The theoretical model is based on a tight binding Hamiltonian with Hubbard term. The magnetic phase diagram involving the total spin is constructed, showing the stability areas of phases with total spin values equal to 0 and 1. A significant stability range of antiferromagnetic, layer-like arrangements is found and extensively discussed. The possibility of switching between nonmagnetic, antiferromagnetic and ferrimagnetic phases with both components of external electric field is demonstrated, being a manifestation of a magnetoelectric effect. The influence of magnetic field on the phase diagrams is analysed.

Thermodynamic properties of a Hubbard model on a cubic cluster - exact diagonalization study at quarter filling

We study the thermodynamics of a zero-dimensional, cubic cluster described with a Hubbard Hamiltonian, focusing our interest on the magnetic properties. The range in which the studied cluster is paramagnetic is considered. The results are obtained by means of exact numerical diagonalization. Such thermodynamic quantities as entropy, specific heat, magnetic susceptibility, spin-spin correlations and double occupancy are discussed. Particular emphasis is put on the behaviour of local maxima of specific heat and susceptibility, which are analysed in terms of Schottky anomalies.

Critical temperature of two-dimensional hydrogenated multilayer graphene-based diluted ferromagnet

In the paper a theoretical study of critical (Curie) temperature of diluted ferromagnet based on multilayer graphene (or graphite) with hydrogen adatoms deposited over carbon atoms belonging to single sublattice is presented. The calculations are performed within Pair Approximation (PA) for diluted ferromagnetic system with long-range interactions. The method is able to take into account the spin-space anisotropy of coupling. The results obtained within Mean Field Approximation (MFA) are also presented for comparison. The assumed interaction between hydrogen adatom spins is inversely proportional to their mutual distance, with the additional exponential attenuation reflecting the presence of disorder in the system. The results obtained for a wide range of impurity concentrations and interaction decay length are discussed. The strongly non-linear behaviour of critical temperature as a function of dilution is predicted, at variance with MFA predictions. Moreover, MFA tends to overestimate heavily the critical temperature values compared to PA. An universal dependence of critical temperature on impurity concentration and interaction decay length is found for strong dilution regime.

Graphene nanoflakes in external electric and magnetic in-plane fields

The paper discusses the influence of the external in-plane electric and magnetic field on the ground state spin phase diagram of selected monolayer graphene nanostructures. The calculations are performed for triangular graphene nanoflakes with armchair edges as well as for short pieces of armchair graphene nanoribbons with zigzag terminations. The Mean Field Approximation (MFA) is employed to solve the Hubbard model. The total spin for both classes of nanostructures is discussed as a function of external fields for various structure sizes, for charge neutrality conditions as well as for weak charge doping. The variety of nonzero spin states is found and their stability ranges are determined. For some structures, the presence of antiferromagnetic orderings is predicted within the zero-spin phase. The process of magnetization of nanoflakes with magnetic field at constant electric field is also investigated, showing opposite effect of electric field at low and at high magnetic fields.

Normal and inverse magnetocaloric effect in magnetic multilayers with antiferromagnetic interlayer coupling

The thermodynamics of a spin-1/2 magnetic multilayer system with antiferromagnetic interplanar couplings is studied using the Pair Approximation method. The special attention is paid to magnetocaloric properties, quantified by isothermal entropy change. The multilayer consists of two kinds of magnetic planes, one of which is diluted. The intraplanar couplings in both planes have arbitrary anisotropy ranging between Ising and isotropic Heisenberg interactions. The phase diagram related to the occurrence of magnetic compensation phenomenon is constructed and discussed. Then the isothermal entropy change is discussed as a function of interaction parameters, magnetic component concentration and external magnetic field amplitude. The ranges of normal and inverse magnetocaloric effect are found and related to the presence or absence of compensation.

Electric field control of the indirect magnetic coupling through a short graphene nanoribbon

In the paper we consider the system composed of two magnetic planes attached to zigzag terminations of the graphene nanostructure being an ultrashort fragment of the armchair nanoribbon. We investigate theoretically an indirect coupling between these magnetic planes mediated by charge carriers as a function of external in-plane electric field. The calculations are based on a tight-binding model supplemented with Hubbard term to account for coulombic interactions. For selected sizes of the graphene nanostructure, particularly high sensitivity of the coupling to the electric field is found. This leads to the possibility of control over coupling magnitude and continuous switching of its sign between antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic one. Such a phenomenon is demonstrated in the numerical results and its origin is analysed. The robustness of this effect against armchair edge deformation and variation of exchange energy between magnetic planes and spins of charge carriers is discussed in detailed way.

A self-consistent thermodynamic model of metallic systems. Application for the description of gold

A self-consistent thermodynamic model of metallic system is presented. The expression for the Gibbs energy is derived, which incorporates elastic (static) energy, vibrational energy within the Debye model, and electronic part in Hartee-Fock approximation. The elastic energy is introduced by a volume-dependent anharmonic potential. From the Gibbs energy all thermodynamic quantities, as well as the equation of state, are self-consistently obtained. The model is applied for the description of bulk gold in temperature range $0 \leq T \lesssim 1300$K and external pressure up to 30 GPa. The calculated thermodynamic properties are illustrated in figures and show satisfactory agreement with experimental data. The advantages and opportunities for further development of the method are discussed.

Critical temperature of MgB$_2$ ultrathin superconducting films: BCS model calculations in tight-binding approximation

We develop the multi-band BCS model of superconductivity in the ultrathin films using the orthogonal tight-binding approximation for constructing the electron wavefunctions. This allows for relatively simple determination of the band structure near the Fermi level as well as the electron-electron interaction matrix elements of the BCS type. The model is applied to the ultrathin MgB$_2$(0001) films, for which the critical temperature values are calculated in the thickness range 2...10 MgB$_2$ layers. The importance of the boundary conditions is emphasised, as either boron or magnesium layers may cover the film. It is found that films thinner than 4 layers show substantial decrease in the critical temperature. The charge spillage outside the geometric boundaries of the film, which is allowed in our model, suppresses $T_c$ oscillations and weakens its dependence on film covering layer composition.

Critical temperature of site-diluted spin-1/2 systems with long-range ferromagnetic interactions

In the paper the Pair Approximation (PA) method for studies of the site-diluted spin-1/2 systems of arbitrary dimensionality with the long-range ferromagnetic interactions is adopted. The method allows to take into account arbitrary anisotropy of the interactions in the spin space, so it is not limited to purely Ising couplings. Within this approach, the Gibbs free energy is obtained, which allows to derive all the further interesting thermodynamic properties. In particular, we obtain an equation for the critical temperature of the second-order phase transitions for the model in question. In the study we focus our attention on the systems with ferromagnetic interactions decaying with the distance according to the power law $J(r)\propto r^{-n}$. We discuss the dependence of the critical temperature on the concentration of magnetic component and the index $n$ for selected one-, two- and three-dimensional lattices. We confirm the absence of the critical concentration for a diluted magnet with infinite interaction range. In the regime of the low concentrations of magnetic component, we find a non-linear increase of the critical temperature with the concentration in the form of $T_{c}\propto p^{n/d}$, depending on the system dimensionality $d$ and the index $n$, whereas $n > d$.

Ground-state magnetic phase diagram of bow-tie graphene nanoflakes in external magnetic field

The magnetic phase diagram of a ground state is studied theoretically for graphene nanoflakes of bow-tie shape and various size in external in-plane magnetic field. The tight-binding Hamiltonian supplemented with Hubbard term is used to model the electronic structure of the systems in question. The existence of the antiferromagnetic phase with magnetic moments localized at the sides of the bow-tie is found for low field and a field-induced spin-flip transition to ferromagnetic state is predicted to occur in charge-undoped structures. For small nanoflake doped with a single charge carrier the low-field phase is ferrimagnetic and a metamagnetic transition to ferromagnetic ordering can be forced by the field. The critical field is found to decrease with increasing size of the nanoflake. The influence of diagonal and off-diagonal disorder on the mentioned magnetic properties is studied. The effect of off-diagonal disorder is found to be more important than this of diagonal disorder, leading to significantly widened distribution of critical fields for disordered population of nanoflakes.

Indirect coupling between localized magnetic moments in zero-dimensional graphene nanostructures (quantum dots)

The indirect Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) coupling between on-site magnetic impurities is studied for two kinds of graphene nanoflakes consisting of approximately 100 carbon atoms, posessing either zigzag or armchair edge. The tight-binding Hamiltonian with Hubbard term is used in non-perturbative calculations of coupling between the impurities placed at the edge of the structure. In general, for zigzag-edged nanoflakes a pronounced coupling robust against charge doping is found, while for armchair-edged structures the interaction is weaker and much more sensitive to charge doping. Also the distance dependence of indirect exchange differs significantly for both edge forms.

Indirect coupling between localized magnetic moments in triangular graphene nanoflakes

The indirect, charge-carrier mediated coupling between localized magnetic moments is studied for graphene nanoflakes of triangular shape and zig-zag edge. The characteristic feature of such nanoflakes is the presence of a shell of zero-energy states in the electronic spectrum. The tight-binding Hamiltonian supplemented with a Hubbard term is used for electronic structure calculations. The indirect RKKY (Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida) coupling energy is derived from the total electronic energy of the system in a non-perturbative way. The attention is focused on the on-site and plaquette impurities situated along the edge. The charge doping is also taken into account. It is found that the zero-energy states may give rise to a coupling mechanism which is describable by a first-order perturbation calculus and can yield robust indirect coupling of both ferro- and antiferromagnetic character, which dominates ovet the usual RKKY mechanism. The numerical results obtained emphasize the importance of the Hubbard term and the effect of the charge doping on the coupling.

The influence of interplanar coupling on the entropy and specific heat of the bilayer ferromagnet

The Pair Approximation method is applied to studies of the magnetic Ising-Heisenberg bilayer with simple cubic structure and spin $S=1/2$. The method allows to take into account quantum effects related to Heisenberg couplings. In the paper the entropy and magnetic contribution to the specific heat are calculated. A special attention is paid to the case when the planes are magnetically non-equivalent and the interplanar coupling is relatively weak. A double peak structure in the temperature dependence of the specific heat and the entropy change in the external field is found. When the system is strongly anisotropic (the case of Ising couplings) the Exact Calculations for Finite Cluster are performed for comparison with the Pair Approximation method.

Thermodynamic properties of a diluted Heisenberg ferromagnet with interaction anisotropy -- magnetocaloric point of view

The thermodynamics of a site-diluted ferromagnetic Heisenberg model for spin $S=1/2$ with interaction anisotropy in spin space is investigated. The study is aimed at presenting the magnetocaloric properties of such a model, including the entropy and temperature changes in magnetization/demagnetization processes, generalized Grüneisen ratio as well as the quantities characterizing the efficiency of magnetic cooling cycles. The results are obtained using Pair Approximation (PA) method and extensively compared with the Molecular Field Approximation (MFA) calculations. The importance of interaction anisotropy and site-dilution is discussed. The inadequacy of the MFA approach (even on the qualitative level) is found for selected quantities, while PA provides the results which are consistent with the experimentally observed behaviour.

Critical Temperature Studies of the Anisotropic Bi- and Multilayer Heisenberg Ferromagnets in Pair Approximation

The Pair Approximation method is applied to studies of the bilayer and multilayer magnetic systems with simple cubic structure. The method allows to take into account quantum effects related with non-Ising couplings. The paper adopts the anisotropic Heisenberg model for spin $S=1/2$ and considers the phase transition temperatures as a function of the exchange integrals strength in line with the role of intra- and interplanar anisotropic interactions in the onset of low-dimensional magnetism. The compensation effect for the Curie temperature is found for asymmetric interactions within the neighbouring planes of the bilayer system. The paper predicts the saturation of the Curie temperature for strong interplanar interactions. However, such an effect for the multilayer system occurs only when the interplanar interactions are of purely isotropic character.

A simple thermodynamic description of the combined Einstein and elastic models

Simple application of the Einstein model combined with the elastic description of solid state is developed. The frequency of quantum oscillators has been assumed as volume dependent and, furthermore, elastic energy terms of static character have been included to complete the description. Such an extension enables to construct the complete thermodynamics. In particular, the model yields practical equation of state and describes the thermal expansion coefficient as well as the isothermal compressibility of solids. The thermodynamic properties resulting from the Gibbs free-energy analysis have been calculated and illustrated in figures. Some comparison of the theoretical results with experimental data for solid argon has been made.
