Double soft graviton factors from the gravitational Wilson line

The description of low-energy (``soft") gravitons using universal theorems continues to attract attention. In this paper, we consider the emission of two soft gravitons, using a previously developed formalism that describes (next-to) soft graviton emission in terms of generalised Wilson lines (GWLs). Based on Schwinger's proper time methods, the GWL allows for a systematic accounting of graviton emission from external hard particles in the amplitude, as well as from three-graviton vertices located off the individual worldlines. By combining these effects, previously derived results for the leading double soft graviton theorem are recovered. Still, the formalism allows us to go further in deriving new universal double soft graviton terms at subleading order in the momentum expansion. We further demonstrate how gauge invariance can be utilized to account for double soft graviton emissions within the non-radiative amplitude, including the effects of non-zero initial positions of the hard particles. Our results can be packaged into an exponential dressing operator, and we comment on possible applications to the effective field theory for binary scattering processes.

AdS S-Matrix for Massive Vector Fields

We generalize a recent ``AdS S-matrix" formulation for interacting massive scalars on AdS spacetimes to the case of massive vector fields. This method relies on taking the infinite radius limit for scattering processes perturbatively, which is analyzed using Witten diagrams in the momentum space formulation of global AdS with embedding space coordinates. It recovers the S-matrix with subleading corrections in powers of the inverse AdS radius about a flat spacetime region within the bulk. We first derive the massive vector bulk-to-boundary and bulk-to-bulk propagators within this perturbation theory. As an example, we consider the Abelian Higgs Model in a certain regime of the coupling parameter space to model an interacting Proca theory on AdS spacetimes. We specifically compute the AdS S-matrix for a process involving massive external vector fields mediated by a massive scalar. We lastly discuss possible massless limit of propagators within this perturbative framework.

Next-to-eikonal corrected double graviton dressing and gravitational wave observables at ${\cal O}(G^2)$

Following a recent proposal to describe inelastic eikonal scattering processes in terms of gravitationally dressed elastic eikonal amplitudes, we motivate a collinear double graviton dressing and investigate its properties. This is derived from a generalized Wilson line operator in the worldline formalism by integrating over fluctuations of the eikonal trajectories of external particles in gravitationally interacting theories. The dressing can be expressed as a product of exponential terms -- a coherent piece with contributions to all odd orders in the gravitational coupling constant and a term quadratic in graviton modes, with the former providing classical gravitational wave observables. In particular, the coherent dressing involves $\mathcal{O}(\kappa^3)$ subleading double graviton corrections to the Weinberg soft factor. We use this dressing to derive expressions for the waveform, radiative momentum spectrum and angular momentum. In a limiting case of the waveform, we derive the nonlinear memory effect resulting from the emission of nearly soft gravitons from a scattering process.

Soft factors with AdS radius corrections

We review recent developments concerning the soft factorization of scattering amplitudes that arise in the large radius limit of four dimensional Anti-de Sitter (AdS$_4$) spacetimes. This includes the presence of AdS radius dependent corrections of known flat spacetime soft factors and their implication on the relationship between soft theorems and Ward identities of the boundary conformal field theory.

Celestial Eikonal Amplitudes in the Near-Horizon Region

We investigate the celestial description of an eikonal amplitude for the scattering of massless scalars mediated by soft gravitons in the near-horizon region of a large eternal Schwarzschild black hole. Our construction thus provides a celestial conformal field theory on the horizon corresponding to a non-perturbative scattering process that accounts for event horizons on asymptotically flat spacetimes. From the \emph{known} two-dimensional near-horizon scattering amplitude computed within the effective field theory framework, we first construct a four-dimensional amplitude in a flat spacetime frame around the bifurcation sphere strictly in a small angle approximation limit. While the kinematics of external particles in this frame at leading order are analogous to a Minkowski spacetime, the eikonal amplitude differs from those about flat spacetime due to the near-horizon scattering potential. We construct a celestial correlator following a Mellin transform that provides an all loop order result, with a universal leading ultraviolet (UV) soft scaling behavior of the conformally invariant cross-ratio, and an infrared (IR) pole for the scaling dimension at each loop order. We argue these properties manifest soft graviton exchanges in the near-horizon region and, consequently, the soft UV behavior of the amplitude.

$1/L^2$ corrected soft photon theorem from a CFT$_3$ Ward identity

Classical soft theorems applied to probe scattering processes on AdS$_4$ spacetimes predict the existence of $1/L^2$ corrections to the soft photon and soft graviton factors of asymptotically flat spacetimes. In this paper, we establish that the $1/L^2$ corrected soft photon theorem can be derived from a large $N$ CFT$_3$ Ward identity. We derive a perturbed soft photon mode operator on a flat spacetime patch in global AdS$_4$ in terms of an integrated expression of the boundary CFT current. Using the same in the CFT$_3$ Ward identity, we recover the $1/L^2$ corrected soft photon theorem derived from classical soft theorems.

Dynamical analogue spacetimes in non-relativistic flows

Analogue gravity models describe linear fluctuations of fluids as a massless scalar field propagating on stationary acoustic spacetimes constructed from the background flow. In this paper, we establish that this paradigm generalizes to arbitrary order nonlinear perturbations propagating on dynamical analogue spacetimes. Our results hold for all inviscid, spherically symmetric and barotropic non-relativistic flows in the presence of an external conservative force. We demonstrate that such fluids always admit a dynamical description governed by a coupled pair of wave and continuity equations. We provide an iterative approach to solve these equations about any known stationary solution to all orders in perturbation. In the process, we reveal that there exists a dynamical acoustic spacetime on which fluctuations of the mass accretion rate propagate. The dynamical acoustic spacetime is shown to have a well defined causal structure and curvature. In addition, we find a classical fluctuation relation for the acoustic horizon of the spacetime that admit scenarios wherein the horizon can grow as well as recede, with the latter being a result with no known analogue in black holes. As an example, we numerically investigate the Bondi flow accreting solution subject to exponentially damped time dependent perturbations. We find that second and higher order classical perturbations possess an acoustic horizon that oscillates and changes to a new stable size at late times. In particular, the case of a receding acoustic horizon is realized through `low frequency' perturbations. We discuss our results in the context of more general analogue models and its potential implications on astrophysical accretion flows.

Soft Photon theorem in the small negative cosmological constant limit

We study the effect of electromagnetic interactions on the classical soft theorems on an asymptotically AdS background in 4 spacetime dimensions, in the limit of a small cosmological constant or equivalently a large AdS radius $l$. This identifies $1/l^2$ perturbative corrections to the known asymptotically flat spacetime leading and subleading soft factors. Our analysis is only valid to leading order in $1/l^2$. The leading soft factor can be expected to be universal and holds beyond tree level. This allows us to derive a $1/l^2$ corrected Ward identity, following the known equivalence between large gauge Ward identities and soft theorems in asymptotically flat spacetimes.

Horizon Hair from Inversion Symmetry

The extreme Reissner-Nordstr\"om solution has a discrete conformal isometry that maps the future event horizon to future null infinity and vice versa, the Couch-Torrence inversion isometry. We study the dynamics of a probe Maxwell field on the extreme Reissner-Nordstr\"om solution in light of this symmetry. We present a gauge fixing that is compatible with the inversion symmetry. The gauge fixing allows us to relate the gauge parameter at the future horizon to future null infinity, which further allows us to study global charges for large gauge symmetries in the exterior of the extreme Reissner-Nordstr\"om black hole. Along the way, we construct Newman-Penrose and Aretakis like conserved quantities along future null infinity and the future event horizon, respectively, and relate them via the Couch-Torrence inversion symmetry.

Emergent gravity through non-linear perturbation

As of now, all analogue gravity models available in the literature deal with the emergence of an acoustic geometry through linear perturbations of transonic fluids only. It has never been investigated whether the analogue gravity phenomena is solely a consequence of linear perturbations, or rather a generic property of arbitrary perturbations of inhomogeneous, inviscid and irrotational fluids. In the present work, for the first time in the literature, we demonstrate that acoustic spacetimes may be formed through higher order non-linear perturbations, and thus establish that analogue gravity phenomena is rather more general than what was thought before. We consider spherically accreting astrophysical systems as a natural classical analogue gravity model, and develop a formalism to investigate non-linear perturbations of such accretion flows to arbitrary order. Our iterative approach involves a coupled set of equations for the mass accretion rate and the density of the fluid. In particular, we demonstrate that the wave equation for the mass accretion rate involves an acoustic metric which can be perturbatively constructed to all orders. We numerically solve the coupled equations about the leading transonic Bondi flow solution. This analysis uses boundary conditions set to the original unperturbed values, with the time dependence of the mass accretion rate perturbation taken to be exponentially damped. The perturbed solutions indicate that second order and higher perturbations of the metric generically cause the original acoustic horizon to oscillate and change in size. We explain this phenomenon in detail and its implications on non-linear perturbations of accretion flows in general.

Soft factors from classical scattering on the Reissner-Nordstr\"om spacetime

We consider perturbations of the $4$ dimensional Reissner-Nordstr\"om spacetime induced by the probe scattering of a point particle with charge and mass moving on an unbound trajectory with an asymptotically large velocity. The resulting classical radiative solutions are the gravitational and electromagnetic bremmstrahlung. We use these classical solutions to derive the universal photon and graviton soft factor contributions at the tree level, which have the same form as noted in the literature. The soft factor expressions enable us to investigate the tail contribution to the memory effect in late time gravitational and electromagnetic waveforms. We find that generically, the contribution from the charge dominates that from the mass in the late time radiation.

Schwarzschild de Sitter and extremal surfaces

We study extremal surfaces in the Schwarzschild de Sitter spacetime with real mass parameter. We find codim-2 timelike extremal surfaces stretching between the future and past boundaries that pass through the vicinity of the cosmological horizon in a certain limit. These are analogous to the surfaces in arXiv:1711.01107 [hep-th]. We also find spacelike surfaces that never reach the future/past boundaries but stretch indefinitely through the extended Penrose diagram, passing through the vicinity of the cosmological and Schwarzschild horizons in a certain limit. Further, these exhibit interesting structure for de Sitter space (zero mass) as well as in the extremal, or Nariai, limit.

Hamiltonian BRST formalism for gauge fields on black hole spacetimes

We investigate the Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) formalism for gauge theories on spherically symmetric black hole spacetimes, with or without a cosmological constant ($\Lambda\geq0$). This is illustrated through the example of scalar electrodynamics. We first demonstrate that the horizons contribute additional surface terms to the Gauss law constraint of the theory when gauge transformations are not required to vanish on the horizons. We then consider the BRST invariant path integral including these surface terms following the Hamiltonian BRST formalism. We fix a radiation-like gauge which involves null components of the electromagnetic field at the horizons. We find that the presence of the surface terms in the constraint forces the ghost and gauge fixing actions to include additional surface integrals at the horizons. The null combination of the gauge fields at the horizons is shown to modify the ghost number charge of the theory through additional terms at the horizons. We also demonstrate how one can construct a gauge-fixing fermion which generates its own nilpotent symmetry transformations, called co-BRST transformations, that leave the theory invariant. The BRST and co-BRST transformations are further used to identify dressed (gauge invariant) fields of theory, whose dressings are affected by the presence of Killing horizons. We conclude with a discussion of potential applications of our results in soft limits and thermal field theories on black hole backgrounds.

Constrained field theories on Kerr backgrounds

We analyze the constraints of gauge theories on Kerr and Kerr-de Sitter spacetimes, which contain one or more horizons. We find that the constraints are modified on such backgrounds through the presence of additional surface terms at the horizons. As a concrete example, we consider the Maxwell field and find that the Gauss law constraint involves surface corrections at the horizons. These surface contributions correspond to induced surface charges and currents on the horizons, which agree with those found within the membrane paradigm. The modification of the Gauss law constraint also influences the gauge fixing and Dirac brackets of the theory.

Electrovacuum solutions in non-local gravity

We consider the coupling of the electromagnetic field to a non-local gravity theory comprising of the Einstein-Hilbert action in addition to a non-local $R\, {\Box}^{-2} R$ term associated with a mass scale $m$. We demonstrate that in the case of the minimally coupled electromagnetic field, real corrections about the Reissner-Nordstr\"om background only exist between the inner Cauchy horizon and the event horizon of the black hole. This motivates us to consider the modified coupling of electromagnetism to this theory via the Kaluza ansatz. The Kaluza reduction introduces non-local terms involving the electromagnetic field to the pure gravitational non-local theory. An iterative approach is provided to perturbatively solve the equations of motion to arbitrary order in $m^2$ about any known solution of General Relativity. We derive the first-order corrections and demonstrate that the higher order corrections are real and perturbative about the external background of a Reissner-Nordstr\"om black hole. We also discuss how the Kaluza reduced action, through the inclusion of non-local electromagnetic fields, could also be relevant in quantum effects on curved backgrounds with horizons.

Gravitational anomalies on the Newton-Cartan background

We derive the trace and diffeomorphism anomalies of the Schr\"odinger field minimally coupled to the Newton-Cartan background using Fujikawa's path integral approach. This approach in particular enables us to calculate the one-loop contributions due to all the fields of the Newton-Cartan structure. We determine the coefficients and demonstrate that gravitational anomalies for this theory always arise in odd dimensions. Due to the gauge field contribution of the background we find that in $2+1$ dimensions the trace anomaly contains terms which have a form similar to that of the $1+1$ and $3+1$ dimensional relativistic trace anomalies. This result reveals that the Newton-Cartan background which satisfies the Frobenius condition possesses a Type A trace anomaly in contrast with the result of Lishitz spacetimes. As an application we demonstrate that the coefficient of the term similar to the $1+1$ dimensional relativistic trace anomaly satisfies a c-theorem condition.

Constrained field theories on spherically symmetric spacetimes with horizons

We apply the Dirac-Bergmann algorithm for the analysis of constraints to gauge theories defined on spherically symmetric black hole backgrounds. We find that the constraints for a given theory are modified on such spacetimes through the presence of additional contributions from the horizon. As a concrete example, we consider the Maxwell field on a black hole background, and determine the role of the horizon contributions on the dynamics of the theory.

The inverse spatial Laplacian of spherically symmetric spacetimes

In this paper we derive the inverse spatial Laplacian for static, spherically symmetric backgrounds by solving Poisson's equation for a point source. This is different from the electrostatic Green function, which is defined on the four dimensional static spacetime, while the equation we consider is defined on the spatial hypersurface of such spacetimes. This Green function is relevant in the Hamiltonian dynamics of theories defined on spherically symmetric backgrounds, and closed form expressions for the solutions we find are absent in the literature. We derive an expression in terms of elementary functions for the Schwarzschild spacetime, and comment on the relation of this solution with the known Green function of the spacetime Laplacian operator. We also find an expression for the Green function on the static pure de Sitter space in terms of hypergeometric functions.
