ZhuJiu: A Multi-dimensional, Multi-faceted Chinese Benchmark for Large Language Models

The unprecedented performance of large language models (LLMs) requires comprehensive and accurate evaluation. We argue that for LLMs evaluation, benchmarks need to be comprehensive and systematic. To this end, we propose the ZhuJiu benchmark, which has the following strengths: (1) Multi-dimensional ability coverage: We comprehensively evaluate LLMs across 7 ability dimensions covering 51 tasks. Especially, we also propose a new benchmark that focuses on knowledge ability of LLMs. (2) Multi-faceted evaluation methods collaboration: We use 3 different yet complementary evaluation methods to comprehensively evaluate LLMs, which can ensure the authority and accuracy of the evaluation results. (3) Comprehensive Chinese benchmark: ZhuJiu is the pioneering benchmark that fully assesses LLMs in Chinese, while also providing equally robust evaluation abilities in English. (4) Avoiding potential data leakage: To avoid data leakage, we construct evaluation data specifically for 37 tasks. We evaluate 10 current mainstream LLMs and conduct an in-depth discussion and analysis of their results. The ZhuJiu benchmark and open-participation leaderboard are publicly released at http://www.zhujiu-benchmark.com/ and we also provide a demo video at https://youtu.be/qypkJ89L1Ic.

LMTuner: An user-friendly and highly-integrable Training Framework for fine-tuning Large Language Models

With the burgeoning development in the realm of large language models (LLMs), the demand for efficient incremental training tailored to specific industries and domains continues to increase. Currently, the predominantly employed frameworks lack modular design, it often takes a lot of coding work to kickstart the training of LLM. To address this, we present "LMTuner", a highly usable, integrable, and scalable system for training LLMs expeditiously and with minimal user-input. LMTuner comprises three main modules - the Interaction, Training, and Inference Modules. We advocate that LMTuner's usability and integrality alleviate the complexities in training large language models. Remarkably, even a novice user could commence training large language models within five minutes. Furthermore, it integrates DeepSpeed frameworks and supports Efficient Fine-Tuning methodologies like Low Rank Adaptation (LoRA), Quantized LoRA (QLoRA), etc., enabling the training of language models scaling from 300M to a whopping 130B parameters using a single server. The LMTuner's homepage (https://wengsyx.github.io/LMTuner/)and screencast video (https://youtu.be/nsXmWOmN3rE) are now publicly available.

Embedding-based Retrieval with LLM for Effective Agriculture Information Extracting from Unstructured Data

Pest identification is a crucial aspect of pest control in agriculture. However, most farmers are not capable of accurately identifying pests in the field, and there is a limited number of structured data sources available for rapid querying. In this work, we explored using domain-agnostic general pre-trained large language model(LLM) to extract structured data from agricultural documents with minimal or no human intervention. We propose a methodology that involves text retrieval and filtering using embedding-based retrieval, followed by LLM question-answering to automatically extract entities and attributes from the documents, and transform them into structured data. In comparison to existing methods, our approach achieves consistently better accuracy in the benchmark while maintaining efficiency.

Multilingual Lexical Simplification via Paraphrase Generation

Lexical simplification (LS) methods based on pretrained language models have made remarkable progress, generating potential substitutes for a complex word through analysis of its contextual surroundings. However, these methods require separate pretrained models for different languages and disregard the preservation of sentence meaning. In this paper, we propose a novel multilingual LS method via paraphrase generation, as paraphrases provide diversity in word selection while preserving the sentence's meaning. We regard paraphrasing as a zero-shot translation task within multilingual neural machine translation that supports hundreds of languages. After feeding the input sentence into the encoder of paraphrase modeling, we generate the substitutes based on a novel decoding strategy that concentrates solely on the lexical variations of the complex word. Experimental results demonstrate that our approach surpasses BERT-based methods and zero-shot GPT3-based method significantly on English, Spanish, and Portuguese.

Decomposed resolution of finite-state aggregative optimal control problems

A class of finite-state and discrete-time optimal control problems is introduced. The problems involve a large number of agents with independent dynamics, which interact through an aggregative term in the cost function. The problems are intractable by dynamic programming. We describe and analyze a decomposition method that only necessitates to solve at each iteration small-scale and independent optimal control problems associated with each single agent. When the number of agents is large, the convergence of the method to a nearly optimal solution is ensured, despite the absence of convexity of the problem. The procedure is based on a method called Stochastic Frank-Wolfe algorithm, designed for general nonconvex aggregative optimization problems. Numerical results are presented, for a toy model of the charging management of a battery fleet.

Large-scale nonconvex optimization: randomization, gap estimation, and numerical resolution

We address a large-scale and nonconvex optimization problem, involving an aggregative term. This term can be interpreted as the sum of the contributions of N agents to some common good, with N large. We investigate a relaxation of this problem, obtained by randomization. The relaxation gap is proved to converge to zeros as N goes to infinity, independently of the dimension of the aggregate. We propose a stochastic method to construct an approximate minimizer of the original problem, given an approximate solution of the randomized problem. McDiarmid's concentration inequality is used to quantify the probability of success of the method. We consider the Frank-Wolfe (FW) algorithm for the resolution of the randomized problem. Each iteration of the algorithm requires to solve a subproblem which can be decomposed into N independent optimization problems. A sublinear convergence rate is obtained for the FW algorithm. In order to handle the memory overflow problem possibly caused by the FW algorithm, we propose a stochastic Frank-Wolfe (SFW) algorithm, which ensures the convergence in both expectation and probability senses. Numerical experiments on a mixed-integer quadratic program illustrate the efficiency of the method.

Sentence Simplification Using Paraphrase Corpus for Initialization

Neural sentence simplification method based on sequence-to-sequence framework has become the mainstream method for sentence simplification (SS) task. Unfortunately, these methods are currently limited by the scarcity of parallel SS corpus. In this paper, we focus on how to reduce the dependence on parallel corpus by leveraging a careful initialization for neural SS methods from paraphrase corpus. Our work is motivated by the following two findings: (1) Paraphrase corpus includes a large proportion of sentence pairs belonging to SS corpus. (2) We can construct large-scale pseudo parallel SS data by keeping these sentence pairs with a higher complexity difference. Therefore, we propose two strategies to initialize neural SS methods using paraphrase corpus. We train three different neural SS methods with our initialization, which can obtain substantial improvements on the available WikiLarge data compared with themselves without initialization.

Towards Graph-hop Retrieval and Reasoning in Complex Question Answering over Textual Database

In Textual question answering (TQA) systems, complex questions often require retrieving multiple textual fact chains with multiple reasoning steps. While existing benchmarks are limited to single-chain or single-hop retrieval scenarios. In this paper, we propose to conduct Graph-Hop -- a novel multi-chains and multi-hops retrieval and reasoning paradigm in complex question answering. We construct a new benchmark called ReasonGraphQA, which provides explicit and fine-grained evidence graphs for complex questions to support interpretable reasoning, comprehensive and detailed reasoning. And ReasonGraphQA also shows an advantage in reasoning diversity and scale. Moreover, We propose a strong graph-hop baseline called Bidirectional Graph Retrieval (BGR) method for generating an explanation graph of textual evidence in knowledge reasoning and question answering. We have thoroughly evaluated existing evidence retrieval and reasoning models on the ReasonGraphQA. Experiments highlight Graph-Hop is a promising direction for answering complex questions, but it still has certain limitations. We have further studied mitigation strategies to meet these challenges and discuss future directions.

Error estimates of a theta-scheme for second-order mean field games

We introduce and analyze a new finite-difference scheme, relying on the theta-method, for solving monotone second-order mean field games. These games consist of a coupled system of the Fokker-Planck and the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation. The theta-method is used for discretizing the diffusion terms: we approximate them with a convex combination of an implicit and an explicit term. On contrast, we use an explicit centered scheme for the first-order terms. Assuming that the running cost is strongly convex and regular, we first prove the monotonicity and the stability of our theta-scheme, under a CFL condition. Taking advantage of the regularity of the solution of the continuous problem, we estimate the consistency error of the theta-scheme. Our main result is a convergence rate of order $\mathcal{O}(h^r)$ for the theta-scheme, where $h$ is the step length of the space variable and $r \in (0,1)$ is related to the Hölder continuity of the solution of the continuous problem and some of its derivatives.

ParaLS: Lexical Substitution via Pretrained Paraphraser

Lexical substitution (LS) aims at finding appropriate substitutes for a target word in a sentence. Recently, LS methods based on pretrained language models have made remarkable progress, generating potential substitutes for a target word through analysis of its contextual surroundings. However, these methods tend to overlook the preservation of the sentence's meaning when generating the substitutes. This study explores how to generate the substitute candidates from a paraphraser, as the generated paraphrases from a paraphraser contain variations in word choice and preserve the sentence's meaning. Since we cannot directly generate the substitutes via commonly used decoding strategies, we propose two simple decoding strategies that focus on the variations of the target word during decoding. Experimental results show that our methods outperform state-of-the-art LS methods based on pre-trained language models on three benchmarks.

Large Language Models Need Holistically Thought in Medical Conversational QA

The medical conversational question answering (CQA) system aims at providing a series of professional medical services to improve the efficiency of medical care. Despite the success of large language models (LLMs) in complex reasoning tasks in various fields, such as mathematics, logic, and commonsense QA, they still need to improve with the increased complexity and specialization of the medical field. This is because medical CQA tasks require not only strong medical reasoning, but also the ability to think broadly and deeply. In this paper, to address these challenges in medical CQA tasks that need to be considered and understood in many aspects, we propose the Holistically Thought (HoT) method, which is designed to guide the LLMs to perform the diffused and focused thinking for generating high-quality medical responses. The proposed HoT method has been evaluated through automated and manual assessments in three different medical CQA datasets containing the English and Chinese languages. The extensive experimental results show that our method can produce more correctness, professional, and considerate answers than several state-of-the-art (SOTA) methods, manifesting its effectiveness. Multi-View Graph Representation Learning for Answering Hybrid Numerical Reasoning Question

Hybrid question answering (HybridQA) over the financial report contains both textual and tabular data, and requires the model to select the appropriate evidence for the numerical reasoning task. Existing methods based on encoder-decoder framework employ a expression tree-based decoder to solve numerical reasoning problems. However, encoders rely more on Machine Reading Comprehension (MRC) methods, which take table serialization and text splicing as input, damaging the granularity relationship between table and text as well as the spatial structure information of table itself. In order to solve these problems, the paper proposes a Multi-View Graph (MVG) Encoder to take the relations among the granularity into account and capture the relations from multiple view. By utilizing MVGE as a module, we constuct Tabular View, Relation View and Numerical View which aim to retain the original characteristics of the hybrid data. We validate our model on the publicly available table-text hybrid QA benchmark (TAT-QA) and outperform the state-of-the-art model.

Logic Traps in Evaluating Attribution Scores

Modern deep learning models are notoriously opaque, which has motivated the development of methods for interpreting how deep models predict. This goal is usually approached with attribution method, which assesses the influence of features on model predictions. As an explanation method, the evaluation criteria of attribution methods is how accurately it re-reflects the actual reasoning process of the model (faithfulness). Meanwhile, since the reasoning process of deep models is inaccessible, researchers design various evaluation methods to demonstrate their arguments. However, some crucial logic traps in these evaluation methods are ignored in most works, causing inaccurate evaluation and unfair comparison. This paper systematically reviews existing methods for evaluating attribution scores and summarizes the logic traps in these methods. We further conduct experiments to demonstrate the existence of each logic trap. Through both the theoretical and experimental analysis, we hope to increase attention on the inaccurate evaluation of attribution scores. Moreover, with this paper, we suggest stopping focusing on improving performance under unreliable evaluation systems and starting efforts on reducing the impact of proposed logic traps

Hydrogels enable negative pressure in water for efficient heat utilization and transfer

Metastable water in negative pressure can provide giant passive driving pressure up to several megapascals for efficient evaporation-driven flow, however, the practical applications with negative pressure are rare due to the challenges of generating and maintaining large negative pressure. In this work, we report a novel structure with thin hydrogel films as evaporation surfaces and robust porous substrates as the supports, and obtain a high negative pressure of -1.61 MPa through water evaporation. Molecular dynamics simulations elucidate the essential role of strong interaction between water molecules and polymer chains in generating the negative pressure. With such a large negative pressure, we demonstrate a streaming potential generator that spontaneously converts environmental energy into electricity and outputs a voltage of 1.06 V. Moreover, we propose a "negative pressure heat pipe" for the first time, which achieves a high heat transfer density of 11.2 kW cm-2 with a flow length of 1 m, showing the potential of negative pressure in efficient heat utilization and transfer.

Knowledge Reasoning via Jointly Modeling Knowledge Graphs and Soft Rules

Knowledge graphs (KGs) play a crucial role in many applications, such as question answering, but incompleteness is an urgent issue for their broad application. Much research in knowledge graph completion (KGC) has been performed to resolve this issue. The methods of KGC can be classified into two major categories: rule-based reasoning and embedding-based reasoning. The former has high accuracy and good interpretability, but a major challenge is to obtain effective rules on large-scale KGs. The latter has good efficiency and scalability, but it relies heavily on data richness and cannot fully use domain knowledge in the form of logical rules. We propose a novel method that injects rules and learns representations iteratively to take full advantage of rules and embeddings. Specifically, we model the conclusions of rule groundings as 0-1 variables and use a rule confidence regularizer to remove the uncertainty of the conclusions. The proposed approach has the following advantages: 1) It combines the benefits of both rules and knowledge graph embeddings (KGEs) and achieves a good balance between efficiency and scalability. 2) It uses an iterative method to continuously improve KGEs and remove incorrect rule conclusions. Evaluations on two public datasets show that our method outperforms the current state-of-the-art methods, improving performance by 2.7\% and 4.3\% in mean reciprocal rank (MRR).

Generating Hierarchical Explanations on Text Classification Without Connecting Rules

The opaqueness of deep NLP models has motivated the development of methods for interpreting how deep models predict. Recently, work has introduced hierarchical attribution, which produces a hierarchical clustering of words, along with an attribution score for each cluster. However, existing work on hierarchical attribution all follows the connecting rule, limiting the cluster to a continuous span in the input text. We argue that the connecting rule as an additional prior may undermine the ability to reflect the model decision process faithfully. To this end, we propose to generate hierarchical explanations without the connecting rule and introduce a framework for generating hierarchical clusters. Experimental results and further analysis show the effectiveness of the proposed method in providing high-quality explanations for reflecting model predicting process.

Answering Numerical Reasoning Questions in Table-Text Hybrid Contents with Graph-based Encoder and Tree-based Decoder

In the real-world question answering scenarios, hybrid form combining both tabular and textual contents has attracted more and more attention, among which numerical reasoning problem is one of the most typical and challenging problems. Existing methods usually adopt encoder-decoder framework to represent hybrid contents and generate answers. However, it can not capture the rich relationship among numerical value, table schema, and text information on the encoder side. The decoder uses a simple predefined operator classifier which is not flexible enough to handle numerical reasoning processes with diverse expressions. To address these problems, this paper proposes a \textbf{Re}lational \textbf{G}raph enhanced \textbf{H}ybrid table-text \textbf{N}umerical reasoning model with \textbf{T}ree decoder (\textbf{RegHNT}). It models the numerical question answering over table-text hybrid contents as an expression tree generation task. Moreover, we propose a novel relational graph modeling method, which models alignment between questions, tables, and paragraphs. We validated our model on the publicly available table-text hybrid QA benchmark (TAT-QA). The proposed RegHNT significantly outperform the baseline model and achieve state-of-the-art results. We openly released the source code and data at https://github.com/lfy79001/RegHNT (2022-05-05).

PEMP: Leveraging Physics Properties to Enhance Molecular Property Prediction

Molecular property prediction is essential for drug discovery. In recent years, deep learning methods have been introduced to this area and achieved state-of-the-art performances. However, most of existing methods ignore the intrinsic relations between molecular properties which can be utilized to improve the performances of corresponding prediction tasks. In this paper, we propose a new approach, namely Physics properties Enhanced Molecular Property prediction (PEMP), to utilize relations between molecular properties revealed by previous physics theory and physical chemistry studies. Specifically, we enhance the training of the chemical and physiological property predictors with related physics property prediction tasks. We design two different methods for PEMP, respectively based on multi-task learning and transfer learning. Both methods include a model-agnostic molecule representation module and a property prediction module. In our implementation, we adopt both the state-of-the-art molecule embedding models under the supervised learning paradigm and the pretraining paradigm as the molecule representation module of PEMP, respectively. Experimental results on public benchmark MoleculeNet show that the proposed methods have the ability to outperform corresponding state-of-the-art models.
