Modeling and Simulation for Fluid-Rotating Structure Interaction

In this paper, we study a dynamic fluid-structure interaction (FSI) model for an elastic structure that is immersed and spinning in the fluid. We develop a linear constitutive model to describe the motion of a rotational elastic structure which is suitable for the application of arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) method in FSI simulation. Additionally, a novel ALE mapping method is designed to generate the moving fluid mesh while the deformable structure spins in a non-axisymmetric fluid channel. The structure velocity is adopted as the principle unknown to form a monolithic saddle-point system together with fluid velocity and pressure. We discretize the nonlinear saddle-point system with mixed finite element method and Newton's linearization, and prove that the derived saddle-point problem is well-posed. The developed methodology is applied to a self-defined elastic structure and a realistic hydro-turbine under a prescribed angular velocity. Both illustrate the satisfactory numerical results of an elastic structure that is deforming and rotating while interacting with the fluid. The numerical validation is also conducted to demonstrate the modeling consistency.

On the 2012 October 23 circular ribbon flare: emission features and magnetic topology

Circular ribbon flares are usually related to spine-fan type magnetic topology containing null-points. In this paper, we investigate an X-class circular ribbon flare on 2012 October 23, using the multi-wavelength data from the \textit{Solar Dynamics Observatory}, \textit{Hinode}, and the \textit{Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager}. In \ion{Ca}{2} H emission, the flare showed three ribbons with two highly elongated ones inside and outside a quasi-circular one, respectively. A hot channel was displayed in the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) emissions that infers the existence of a magnetic flux rope. Two hard X-ray (HXR) sources in the 12--25 keV energy band were located at the footpoints of this hot channel. Using a nonlinear force-free magnetic field extrapolation, we identify three topological structures: (1) a 3D null-point, (2) a flux rope below the fan of the null-point, and (3) a large-scale quasi-separatrix layers (QSL) induced by the quadrupolar-like magnetic field of the active region. We find that the null-point is embedded within the large-scale QSL. In our case, all three identified topological structures must be considered to explain all the emission features associated with the observed flare. Besides, the HXR sources are regarded as the consequence of the reconnection within or near the border of the flux rope.

On modeling nonhomogeneous Poisson process for stochastic simulation input analysis

A validated simulation model primarily requires performing an appropriate input analysis mainly by determining the behavior of real-world processes using probability distributions. In many practical cases, probability distributions of the random inputs vary over time in such a way that the functional forms of the distributions and/or their parameters depend on time. This paper answers the question whether a sequence of observations from a process follows the same statistical distribution, and if not, where the exact change points are. We propose a Likelihood Ratio Test (LRT) based method to detect multiple change points when observations follow non-stationary Poisson process with diverse occurrence rates over time. Results from a comprehensive Monte Carlo study indicate satisfactory performance for the proposed method.

A fast clustering algorithm for mining social network data

Many groups with diverse convictions are interacting online. Interactions in online communities help people to engage each other and enhance understanding across groups. Online communities include multiple sub-communities whose members are similar due to social ties, characteristics, or ideas on a topic. In this research, we are interested in understanding the changes in the relative size and activity of these sub-communities, their merging or splitting patterns, and the changes in the perspectives of the members of these sub-communities due to endogenous dynamics inside the community.

Well-posedness and Robust Preconditioners for the Discretized Fluid-Structure Interaction Systems

In this paper we develop a family of preconditioners for the linear algebraic systems arising from the arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian discretization of some fluid-structure interaction models. After the time discretization, we formulate the fluid-structure interaction equations as saddle point problems and prove the uniform well-posedness. Then we discretize the space dimension by finite element methods and prove their uniform well-posedness by two different approaches under appropriate assumptions. The uniform well-posedness makes it possible to design robust preconditioners for the discretized fluid-structure interaction systems. Numerical examples are presented to show the robustness and efficiency of these preconditioners.

A predictive analytics approach to reducing avoidable hospital readmission

Hospital readmission has become a critical metric of quality and cost of healthcare. Medicare anticipates that nearly $17 billion is paid out on the 20% of patients who are readmitted within 30 days of discharge. Although several interventions such as transition care management and discharge reengineering have been practiced in recent years, the effectiveness and sustainability depends on how well they can identify and target patients at high risk of rehospitalization. Based on the literature, most current risk prediction models fail to reach an acceptable accuracy level; none of them considers patient's history of readmission and impacts of patient attribute changes over time; and they often do not discriminate between planned and unnecessary readmissions. Tackling such drawbacks, we develop a new readmission metric based on administrative data that can identify potentially avoidable readmissions from all other types of readmission. We further propose a tree based classification method to estimate the predicted probability of readmission that can directly incorporate patient's history of readmission and risk factors changes over time. The proposed methods are validated with 2011-12 Veterans Health Administration data from inpatients hospitalized for heart failure, acute myocardial infarction, pneumonia, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in the State of Michigan. Results shows improved discrimination power compared to the literature (c-statistics>80%) and good calibration.

Predicting patient risk of readmission with frailty models in the Department of Veteran Affairs

Reducing potentially preventable readmissions has been identified as an important issue for decreasing Medicare costs and improving quality of care provided by hospitals. Based on previous research by medical professionals, preventable readmissions are caused by such factors as flawed patient discharging process, inadequate follow-ups after discharging, and noncompliance of patients on discharging and follow up instructions. It is also found that the risk of preventable readmission also may relate to some patient's characteristics, such as age, health condition, diagnosis, and even treatment specialty. In this study, using both general demographic information and individual past history of readmission records, we develop a risk prediction model based on hierarchical nonlinear mixed effect framework to extract significant prognostic factors associated with patient risk of 30-day readmission. The effectiveness of our proposed approach is validated based on a real dataset from four VA facilities in the State of Michigan. Simultaneously explaining both patient and population based variations of readmission process, such an accurate model can be used to recognize patients with high likelihood of discharging non-compliances, and then targeted post-care actions can be designed to reduce further rehospitalization.

Estimating Multiple Step Shifts in a Gaussian Process Mean with an Application to Phase I Control Chart Analysis

In preliminary analysis of control charts, one may encounter multiple shifts and/or outliers especially with a large number of observations. The following paper addresses this problem. A statistical model for detecting and estimating multiple change points in a finite batch of retrospective (phase I)data is proposed based on likelihood ratio test. We consider a univariate normal distribution with multiple step shifts occurred in predefined locations of process mean. A numerical example is performed to illustrate the efficiency of our method. Finally, performance comparisons, based on accuracy measures and precision measures, are explored through simulation studies.

A multivariate hierarchical Bayesian framework for healthcare predictions with application to medical home study in the Department of Veteran Affairs

Recently the patient centered medical home (PCMH) model has become a popular approach to deliver better care to patients. Current research shows that the most important key for succession of this method is to make balance between healthcare supply and demand. Without such balance in clinical supply and demand, issues such as excessive under and over utilization of physicians, long waiting time for receiving the appropriate treatment, and non continuity of care will eliminate many advantages of the medical home strategy. To reach this end we need to have information about both supply and demand in healthcare system. Healthcare supply can be calculated easily based on head counts and available hours which is offered by professionals for a specific time period while healthcare demand is not easy to calculate, and it is affected by some healthcare, diagnostic and demographic attributes. In this paper, by extending the hierarchical generalized linear model to include multivariate responses, we develop a clinical workload prediction model for care portfolio demands in a Bayesian framework. Our analyses of a recent data from Veteran Health Administration indicate that our prediction model works for clinical data with high performance.

Modeling clustered non-stationary Poisson processes for stochastic simulation inputs

A validated simulation model primarily requires performing an appropriate input analysis mainly by determining the behavior of real-world processes using probability distributions. In many practical cases, probability distributions of the random inputs vary over time in such a way that the functional forms of the distributions and/or their parameters depend on time. This paper answers the question whether a sequence of observations from a process follow the same statistical distribution, and if not, where the exact change points are, so that observations within two consecutive change points follow the same distribution. We propose two different methods based on likelihood ratio test and cluster analysis to detect multiple change points when observations follow non-stationary Poisson process with diverse occurrence rates over time. Results from a comprehensive Monte Carlo study indicate satisfactory performance for the proposed methods. A well-known example is also considered to show the application of our findings in real world cases.

An analytics approach to designing patient centered medical homes

Recently the patient-centered medical home (PCMH) model has become a popular team-based approach focused on delivering more streamlined care to patients. In current practices of medical homes, a clinical-based prediction frame is recommended because it can help match the portfolio capacity of PCMH teams with the actual load generated by a set of patients. Without such balances in clinical supply and demand, issues such as excessive under and over utilization of physicians, long waiting time for receiving the appropriate treatment, and non-continuity of care will eliminate many advantages of the medical home strategy. In this paper, by extending the hierarchical generalized linear model to include multivariate responses, we develop a clinical workload prediction model for care portfolio demands in a Bayesian framework. The model allows for heterogeneous variances and unstructured covariance matrices for nested random effects that arise through complex hierarchical care systems. We show that using a multivariate approach substantially enhances the precision of workload predictions at both primary and non-primary care levels. We also demonstrate that care demands depend not only on patient demographics but also on other utilization factors, such as length of stay. Our analyses of a recent data from Veteran Health Administration further indicate that risk adjustment for patient health conditions can considerably improve the prediction power of the model.

Spatial Imaging of Landé g Factor through Extended Kondo Effect in a Single Magnetic Molecule

A methodology of atomically resolved Landé g factor mapping of a single molecule is reported. Mn(II)-phthalocyanine (MnPc) molecules on Au(111) surface can be dehydrogenated via atomic manipulation with manifestation of tailored extended Kondo effect, which can allow atomically resolved imaging of the Landé g factor inside a molecule for the first time. By employing dehydrogenated MnPc molecules with removal of six H atoms (-6H-MnPc) as an example, Landé g factor of atomic constituents of the molecule can be obtained, therefore offering a unique g factor mapping of single molecule. Our results open up a new avenue to access local spin texture of a single molecule.

Suppression of Edge Recombination in InAs/InGaAs DWELL Solar Cells

The InAs/InGaAs DWELL solar cell grown by MBE is a standard pin diode structure with six layers of InAs QDs embedded in InGaAs quantum wells placed within a 200-nm intrinsic GaAs region. The GaAs control wafer consists of the same pin configuration but without the DWELL structure. The typical DWELL solar cell exhibits higher short current density while maintaining nearly the same open-circuit voltage for different scales, and the advantage of higher short current density is more obvious in the smaller cells. In contrast, the smaller size cells, which have a higher perimeter to area ratio, make edge recombination current dominant in the GaAs control cells, and thus their open circuit voltage and efficiency severely degrade. The open-circuit voltage and efficiency under AM1.5G of the GaAs control cell decrease from 0.914V and 8.85% to 0.834V and 7.41%, respectively, as the size shrinks from 5*5mm2 to 2*2mm2, compared to the increase from 0.665V and 7.04% to 0.675V and 8.17%, respectively, in the DWELL solar cells.

From Uniform Continuity to Absolute Continuity

Absolute continuity implies uniform continuity, but generally not vice versa. In this short note, we present one sufficient condition for a uniformly continuous function to be absolutely continuous, which is the following theorem: For a uniformly continuous function f defined on an interval of the real line, if it is piecewise convex, then it is also absolutely continuous.

The structure of self-organized blogosphere

In this paper, a statistical analysis of the structure of one blog community, a kind of social networks, is presented. The quantities such as degree distribution, clustering coefficient, average shortest path length are calculated to capture the features of the blogging network. We demonstrate that the blogging network has small-world property and the in and out degree distributions have power-law forms. The analysis also confirms that blogging networks show in general disassortative mixing pattern. Furthermore, the popularity of the blogs is investigated to have a Zipf's law, namely, the fraction of the number of page views of blogs follows a power law.
