Higher dimensional generalization of the Benjamin-Ono equation: 2D case

We consider a higher-dimensional version of the Benjamin-Ono (HBO) equation in the 2D setting: $u_t- \mathcal{R}_1 Δu + \frac{1}{2}(u^2)_x=0, (x,y) \in \mathbb{R}^2$, which is $L^2$-critical, and investigate properties of solutions both analytically and numerically. For a generalized equation (fractional 2D gKdV) after deriving the Pohozaev identities, we obtain non-existence conditions for solitary wave solutions, then prove uniform bounds in the energy space or conditional global existence, and investigate the radiation region, a specific wedge in the negative $x$-direction. We then introduce our numerical approach in a general context, and apply it to obtain the ground state solution in the 2D critical HBO equation, then show that its mass is a threshold for global vs. finite time existing solutions, which is typical in the focusing (mass-)critical dispersive equations. We also observe that globally existing solutions tend to disperse completely into the radiation in this nonlocal equation. The blow-up solutions travel in the positive $x$-direction with the rescaled ground state profile while also radiating dispersive oscillations into the radiative wedge. We conclude with examples of different interactions of two solitary wave solutions, including weak and strong interactions.

Dynamics of solutions in the generalized Benjamin-Ono equation: a numerical study

We consider the generalized Benjamin-Ono (gBO) equation on the real line, $ u_t + \partial_x (-\mathcal H u_{x} + \tfrac1{m} u^m) = 0, x \in \mathbb R, m = 2,3,4,5$, and perform numerical study of its solutions. We first compute the ground state solution to $-Q -\mathcal H Q^\prime +\frac1{m} Q^m = 0$ via Petviashvili's iteration method. We then investigate the behavior of solutions in the Benjamin-Ono ($m=2$) equation for initial data with different decay rates and show decoupling of the solution into a soliton and radiation, thus, providing confirmation to the soliton resolution conjecture in that equation. In the mBO equation ($m=3$), which is $L^2$-critical, we investigate solutions close to the ground state mass, and, in particular, we observe the formation of stable blow-up above it. Finally, we focus on the $L^2$-supercritical gBO equation with $m=4,5$. In that case we investigate the global vs finite time existence of solutions, and give numerical confirmation for the dichotomy conjecture, in particular, exhibiting blow-up phenomena in the supercritical setting.

Waveform Optimization with Multiple Performance Metrics for Broadband Joint Communication and Radar Sensing

Joint communication and radar sensing (JCAS) integrates communication and radar/radio sensing into one system, sharing one transmitted signal. In this paper, we investigate JCAS waveform optimization underlying communication signals, where a base station detects radar targets and communicates with mobile users simultaneously. We first develop individual novel waveform optimization problems for communications and sensing, respectively. For communications, we propose a novel lower bound of sum rate by integrating multi-user interference and effective channel gain into one metric that simplifies the optimization of the sum rate. For radar sensing, we consider optimizing one of two metrics, the mutual information or the Cramer-Rao bound. Then, we formulate the JCAS problem by optimizing the communication metric under different constraints of the radar metric, and we obtain both closed-form solutions and iterative solutions to the non-convex JCAS optimization problem. Numerical results are provided and verify the proposed optimization solutions.

Uplink Sensing in Perceptive Mobile Networks with Asynchronous Transceivers

Perceptive mobile network (PMN) is a recently proposed next-generation network that integrates radar sensing into communication. One major challenge for realizing sensing in PMNs is how to deal with spatially-separated asynchronous transceivers. The asynchrony between sensing receiver and transmitter will cause both timing offsets (TOs) and carrier frequency offsets (CFOs) and lead to degraded sensing accuracy in both ranging and velocity measurements. In this paper, we propose an uplink sensing scheme for PMNs with asynchronous transceivers, targeting at resolving the sensing ambiguity and improving the sensing accuracy. We first adopt a cross-antenna cross-correlation (CACC) operation to remove the sensing ambiguity associated with both TOs and CFOs. Without sensing ambiguity, both actual propagation delay and actual Doppler frequency of multiple targets can be obtained using CACC outputs. To exploit the redundancy of the CACC outputs and reduce the complexity, we then propose a novel mirrored-MUSIC algorithm, which halves the number of unknown parameters to be estimated, for obtaining actual values of delays and Doppler frequencies. Finally, we propose a high-resolution angles-of-arrival (AoAs) estimation algorithm, which jointly processes all measurements from spatial, temporal, and frequency domains. The proposed AoAs estimation algorithm can achieve significantly higher estimation accuracy than that of using samples from the spatial domain only. We also derive the theoretical mean-square-error of the proposed algorithms. Numerical results are provided and validate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

Weak Radio Frequency Signal Detection Based on Piezo-Opto-Electro-Mechanical System: Architecture Design and Sensitivity Prediction

We propose a novel radio-frequency (RF) receiving architecture based on micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) and optical coherent detection module. The architecture converts the received electrical signal into mechanical vibration through the piezoelectric effect and adopts an optical detection module to detect the mechanical vibration. We analyze the response function of piezoelectric film to an RF signal, the noise limited sensitivity of the optical detection module and the system transfer function in the frequency domain. Finally, we adopt simple on-off keying (OOK) modulation with bandwidth 1 kHz and carrier frequency 1 GHz, to numerically evaluate the detection sensitivity. The result shows that, considering the main noise sources in wireless channel and circuits, the signal detection sensitivity can reach around -160 dBm with a 50 $Ω$ impedance. Such sensitivity significantly outperforms that of the currently deployed Long Term Evolution (LTE) system, when normalizing the transmission bandwidth also to 1 kHz.

TimeAutoML: Autonomous Representation Learning for Multivariate Irregularly Sampled Time Series

Multivariate time series (MTS) data are becoming increasingly ubiquitous in diverse domains, e.g., IoT systems, health informatics, and 5G networks. To obtain an effective representation of MTS data, it is not only essential to consider unpredictable dynamics and highly variable lengths of these data but also important to address the irregularities in the sampling rates of MTS. Existing parametric approaches rely on manual hyperparameter tuning and may cost a huge amount of labor effort. Therefore, it is desirable to learn the representation automatically and efficiently. To this end, we propose an autonomous representation learning approach for multivariate time series (TimeAutoML) with irregular sampling rates and variable lengths. As opposed to previous works, we first present a representation learning pipeline in which the configuration and hyperparameter optimization are fully automatic and can be tailored for various tasks, e.g., anomaly detection, clustering, etc. Next, a negative sample generation approach and an auxiliary classification task are developed and integrated within TimeAutoML to enhance its representation capability. Extensive empirical studies on real-world datasets demonstrate that the proposed TimeAutoML outperforms competing approaches on various tasks by a large margin. In fact, it achieves the best anomaly detection performance among all comparison algorithms on 78 out of all 85 UCR datasets, acquiring up to 20% performance improvement in terms of AUC score.

Hybrid Beamforming for Terahertz Multi-Carrier Systems over Frequency Selective Fading

We propose novel hybrid beamforming schemes for the terahertz (THz) wireless system where a multi-antenna base station (BS) communicates with a multi-antenna user over frequency selective fading. Here, we assume that the BS employs sub-connected hybrid beamforming and multi-carrier modulation to deliver ultra high data rate. We consider a three-dimensional wideband THz channel by incorporating the joint effect of molecular absorption, high sparsity, and multi-path fading, and consider the carrier frequency offset in multi-carrier systems. With this model, we first propose a two-stage wideband hybrid beamforming scheme which includes a beamsteering codebook searching algorithm for analog beamforming and a regularized channel inversion method for digital beamforming. We then propose a novel wideband hybrid beamforming scheme with two digital beamformers. In this scheme, an additional digital beamformer is developed to compensate for the performance loss caused by the constant-amplitude hardware constraints and the difference of channel matrices among subcarriers. Furthermore, we consider imperfect channel state information (CSI) and propose a probabilistic robust hybrid beamforming scheme to combat channel estimation errors. Numerical results demonstrate the benefits of our proposed schemes for the sake of practical implementation, especially considering its high spectral efficiency, low complexity, and robustness against imperfect CSI.

Experimental and numerical studies on kV scattered x-ray imaging for real-time image guidance in radiation therapy

Motion management is a critical component of image guidance radiotherapy for lung cancer. We previously proposed a scheme using kV scattered x-ray photons for marker-less real-time image guidance in lung cancer radiotherapy. This study reports our recently progress using the photon counting detection technique to demonstrate potential feasibility of this method and using Monte Carlo (MC) simulations and ray-tracing calculations to characterize the performance. In our scheme, a thin slice of x-ray beam was directed to the target and we measured the outgoing scattered photons using a photon counting detector with a parallel-hole collimator to establish the correspondence between detector pixels and scatter positions. Image corrections of geometry, beam attenuation and scattering angle were performed to convert the raw image to the actual image of Compton attenuation coefficient. We set up a MC simulation system using an in-house developed GPU-based MC package modeling the image formation process. We also performed ray-tracing calculations to investigate the impacts of imaging system geometry on resulting image resolution. The experiment demonstrated feasibility of using a photon counting detector to measure scattered x-ray photons and generate the proposed scattered x-ray image. After correction, x-ray scattering image intensity and Compton scattering attenuation coefficient were linearly related, with R2=0.91. Contrast to Noise Ratios of different objects were improved and the values in experimental results and MC simulation results agreed with each other. Ray-tracing calculations revealed the dependence of image resolution on imaging geometry. The image resolution increases with reduced source to object distance and increased collimator height. The study demonstrated potential feasibility of using scattered x-ray imaging as a real-time image guidance method in radiation therapy.

CO observations toward HI-rich Ultra Diffuse Galaxies

We present CO observations toward a sample of six HI-rich Ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) as well as one UDG (VLSB-A) in the Virgo Cluster with the IRAM 30-m telescope. CO 1-0 is marginally detected at 4sigma level in AGC122966, as the first detection of CO emission in UDGs. We estimate upper limits of molecular mass in other galaxies from the non-detection of CO lines. These upper limits and the marginal CO detection in AGC122966 indicate low mass ratios between molecular and atomic gas masses. With the star formation efficiency derived from the molecular gas, we suggest that the inefficiency of star formation in such HI-rich UDGs is likely caused by the low efficiency in converting molecules from atomic gas, instead of low efficiency in forming stars from molecular gas.

LSOTB-TIR:A Large-Scale High-Diversity Thermal Infrared Object Tracking Benchmark

In this paper, we present a Large-Scale and high-diversity general Thermal InfraRed (TIR) Object Tracking Benchmark, called LSOTBTIR, which consists of an evaluation dataset and a training dataset with a total of 1,400 TIR sequences and more than 600K frames. We annotate the bounding box of objects in every frame of all sequences and generate over 730K bounding boxes in total. To the best of our knowledge, LSOTB-TIR is the largest and most diverse TIR object tracking benchmark to date. To evaluate a tracker on different attributes, we define 4 scenario attributes and 12 challenge attributes in the evaluation dataset. By releasing LSOTB-TIR, we encourage the community to develop deep learning based TIR trackers and evaluate them fairly and comprehensively. We evaluate and analyze more than 30 trackers on LSOTB-TIR to provide a series of baselines, and the results show that deep trackers achieve promising performance. Furthermore, we re-train several representative deep trackers on LSOTB-TIR, and their results demonstrate that the proposed training dataset significantly improves the performance of deep TIR trackers. Codes and dataset are available at https://github.com/QiaoLiuHit/LSOTB-TIR.

Behavior of solutions to the 1D focusing stochastic nonlinear Schrödinger equation with spatially correlated noise

We study the focusing stochastic nonlinear Schrödinger equation in one spatial dimension with multiplicative noise, driven by a Wiener process white in time and colored in space, in the $L^2$-critical and supercritical cases. The mass ($L^2$-norm) is conserved due to the multiplicative noise defined via the Stratonovich integral, the energy (Hamiltonian) is not preserved. We first investigate how the energy is affected by various spatially correlated random perturbations. We then study the influence of the noise on the global dynamics measuring the probability of blow-up versus scattering behavior depending on various parameters of correlation kernels. Finally, we study the effect of the spatially correlated noise on the blow-up behavior, and conclude that such random perturbations do not influence the blow-up dynamics, except for shifting of the blow-up center location. This is similar to what we observed in [32] for a space-time white driving noise.

Dynamics of threshold solutions for energy critical NLS with inverse square potential

We consider the focusing energy critical NLS with inverse square potential in dimension $d= 3, 4, 5$ with the details given in $d=3$ and remarks on results in other dimensions. Solutions on the energy surface of the ground state are characterized. We prove that solutions with kinetic energy less than that of the ground state must scatter to zero or belong to the stable/unstable manifolds of the ground state. In the latter case they converge to the ground state exponentially in the energy space as $t\to \infty$ or $t\to -\infty$. (In 3-dim without radial assumption, this holds under the compactness assumption of non-scattering solutions on the energy surface.) When the kinetic energy is greater than that of the ground state, we show that all radial $H^1$ solutions blow up in finite time, with the only two exceptions in the case of 5-dim which belong to the stable/unstable manifold of the ground state. The proof relies on the detailed spectral analysis, local invariant manifold theory, and a global Virial analysis.

Asymptotic stability of solitary waves of the 3D quadratic Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation

We consider the quadratic Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation $$ \partial_t u + \partial_x Δu + \partial_x u^2 =0 $$ on $\mathbb{R}^3$. A solitary wave solution is given by $Q(x-t,y,z)$, where $Q$ is the ground state solution to $-Q + ΔQ + Q^2 =0$. We prove the asymptotic stability of these solitary wave solutions. Specifically, we show that initial data close to $Q$ in the energy space, evolves to a solution that, as $t\to\infty$, converges to a rescaling and shift of $Q(x-t,y,z)$ in $L^2$ in a rightward shifting region $x> δt -\tan θ\sqrt{y^2+z^2} $ for $0 \leq θ\leq \fracπ{3}-δ$.

Behavior of solutions to the 1D focusing stochastic $L^2$-critical and supercritical nonlinear Schrödinger equation with space-time white noise

We study the focusing stochastic nonlinear Schrödinger equation in 1D in the $L^2$-critical and supercritical cases with an additive or multiplicative perturbation driven by space-time white noise. Unlike the deterministic case, the Hamiltonian (or energy) is not conserved in the stochastic setting, nor is the mass (or the $L^2$-norm) conserved in the additive case. Therefore, we investigate the time evolution of these quantities. After that we study the influence of noise on the global behavior of solutions. In particular, we show that the noise may induce blow-up, thus, ceasing the global existence of the solution, which otherwise would be global in the deterministic setting. Furthermore, we study the effect of the noise on the blow-up dynamics in both multiplicative and additive noise settings and obtain profiles and rates of the blow-up solutions. Our findings conclude that the blow-up parameters (rate and profile) are insensitive to the type or strength of the noise: if blow-up happens, it has the same dynamics as in the deterministic setting, however, there is a (random) shift of the blow-up center, which can be described as a random variable normally distributed.

A 4-6 GHz Radio Recombination Line Survey in the Milky Way

We performed a radio recombination line (RRL) survey to construct a high-mass star-forming region (HMSFR) sample in the Milky Way based on the all-sky Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer ($\textit{All-WISE}$) point source catalog. The survey was observed with the Shanghai 65m Tianma radio telescope (TMRT) covering 10 hydrogen RRL transitions ranging from H98$α$ to H113$α$ (corresponding to the rest frequencies of 4.5$-$6.9 GHz) simultaneously. Out of 3348 selected targets, we identified an HMSFR sample consisting of 517 sources traced by RRLs, a large fraction of this sample (486) locate near the Galactic plane ($|$$\textit{b}$$|$ $<$ 2 deg). In addition to the hydrogen RRLs, we also detected helium and carbon RRLs towards 49 and 23 sources respectively. We cross-match the RRL detections with the 6.7 methanol maser sources built up in previous works for the same target sample, as a result, 103 HMSFR sources were found to harbor both emissions. In this paper, we present the HMSFR catalog accompanied by the measured RRL line properties and a correlation with our methanol maser sample, which is believed to tracer massive stars at earlier stages. The construction of an HMSFR sample consisting of sources in various evolutionary stages indicated by different tracers is fundamental for future studies of high-mass star formation in such regions.

Federated Machine Learning for Intelligent IoT via Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface

Intelligent Internet-of-Things (IoT) will be transformative with the advancement of artificial intelligence and high-dimensional data analysis, shifting from "connected things" to "connected intelligence". This shall unleash the full potential of intelligent IoT in a plethora of exciting applications, such as self-driving cars, unmanned aerial vehicles, healthcare, robotics, and supply chain finance. These applications drive the need of developing revolutionary computation, communication and artificial intelligence technologies that can make low-latency decisions with massive real-time data. To this end, federated machine learning, as a disruptive technology, is emerged to distill intelligence from the data at network edge, while guaranteeing device privacy and data security. However, the limited communication bandwidth is a key bottleneck of model aggregation for federated machine learning over radio channels. In this article, we shall develop an over-the-air computation based communication-efficient federated machine learning framework for intelligent IoT networks via exploiting the waveform superposition property of a multi-access channel. Reconfigurable intelligent surface is further leveraged to reduce the model aggregation error via enhancing the signal strength by reconfiguring the wireless propagation environments.

Tunable giant magnetoresistance in a single-molecule junction

Controlling electronic transport through a single-molecule junction is crucial for molecular electronics or spintronics. In magnetic molecular devices, the spin degree-of-freedom can be used to this end since the magnetic properties of the magnetic ion centers fundamentally impact the transport through the molecules. Here we demonstrate that the electron pathway in a single-molecule device can be selected between two molecular orbitals by varying a magnetic field, giving rise to a tunable anisotropic magnetoresistance up to 93%. The unique tunability of the electron pathways is due to the magnetic reorientation of the transition metal center, resulting in a re-hybridization of molecular orbitals. We obtain the tunneling electron pathways by Kondo effect, which manifests either as a peak or a dip line shape. The energy changes of these spin-reorientations are remarkably low and less than one millielectronvolt. The large tunable anisotropic magnetoresistance could be used to control electronic transport in molecular spintronics.
