Classification of nematic order in 2+1D: Dislocation melting and $O(2)/Z_N$ lattice gauge theory

Nematic phases, breaking spontaneously rotational symmetry, provide for ubiquitously observed states of matter in both classical and quantum systems. These nematic states may be further classified by their $N$--fold rotational invariance described by cyclic groups $C_N$ in 2+1D. Starting from the space groups of underlying $2d$ crystals, we present a general classification scheme incorporating $C_N$ nematic phases that arise from dislocation-mediated melting and discuss the conventional tensor order parameters. By coupling the $O(2)$ matter fields to the $Z_N$ lattice gauge theory, an unified $O(2)/Z_N$ lattice gauge theory is constructed in order to describe all these nematic phases. This lattice gauge theory is shown to reproduce the $C_N$ nematic-isotropic liquid phase transitions and contains an additional deconfined phase. Finally, using our $O(2)/Z_N$ gauge theory framework, we discuss phase transitions between different $C_N$ nematics.

How bilayer excitons can greatly enhance thermoelectric efficiency

Currently, one of the major nanotechnological challenges is to design thermoelectric devices that have a high figure of merit. To that end, we propose to use bilayer excitons. Bilayer exciton systems are shown to have an improved thermopower and an enhanced electric counterflow and thermal conductivity, with respect to regular semiconductor-based thermoelectrics. Here we present a roadmap towards experimental realization of a bilayer exciton thermocouple. A bilayer exciton heterostructures of $p$- and $n$-doped Bi$_2$Te$_3$ can have a figure of merit $zT \sim 60$. Another material suggestion is to make a bilayer out of electron-doped SrTiO$_3$ and hole-doped Ca$_3$Co$_4$O$_9$.

Deconfining the rotational Goldstone mode: the superconducting nematic liquid crystal in 2+1D

The Goldstone theorem states that there should be a massless mode for each spontaneously broken symmetry generator. There is no such rotational mode in crystals, however superconducting quantum nematics should carry rotational Goldstone modes. By generalization of thermal 2D defect mediated melting theory into a 2+1D quantum duality, the emergence of the rotational mode at the quantum phase transition from the solid to the nematic arises as a deconfinement phenomenon, with the unusual property that the stiffness of the rotational mode originates entirely in the dual dislocation condensate.

Dynamics of a single exciton in strongly correlated bilayers

We formulated an effective theory for a single interlayer exciton in a bilayer quantum antiferromagnet, in the limit that the holon and doublon are strongly bound onto one interlayer rung by the Coulomb force. Upon using a rung linear spin wave approximation of the bilayer Heisenberg model, we calculated the spectral function of the exciton for a wide range of the interlayer Heisenberg coupling α=J_{\perp}/Jz. In the disordered phase at large α, a coherent quasiparticle peak appears representing free motion of the exciton in a spin singlet background. In the Néel phase, which applies to more realistic model parameters, a ladder spectrum arises due to Ising confinement of the exciton. The exciton spectrum is visible in measurements of the dielectric function, such as c-axis optical conductivity measurements.

The dynamical frustration of interlayer excitons delocalizing in bilayer quantum antiferromagnets

Using the self-consistent Born approximation we study the delocalization of interlayer excitons in the bilayer Heisenberg quantum antiferromagnet. Under realistic conditions we find that the coupling between the exciton motion and the spin system is strongly enhanced as compared to the case of a single carrier, to a degree that it mimics the confinement physics of carriers in Ising spin systems. We predict that the "ladder spectrum" associated with this confinement physics should be visible in the c-axis exciton spectra of insulating bilayer cuprates such as YBa2Cu3O6. Our discovery indicates that finite density systems of such excitons should show very rich physical behavior.

Statistical fluxes and the Curie-Weiss metal state

We predict a new state of matter in the triangular t-J model in a high doping regime. Due to the altered role of quantum statistics the spins are `localized' in statistical Landau orbits, while the charge carriers form a Bose metal that feels the spins through random gauge fields. In contrast to the Fermi-liquid state, this state naturally exhibits a Curie-Weiss susceptibility, large thermopower, and linear-temperature resistivity, explaining the physics of \textrm{Na}$_{x}$\textrm{CoO}$_{2}$ at $x>0.5.$ A `smoking gun' prediction for neutron scattering is presented.

Creating and modulating electronic states on noble metal surfaces: ultrathin Ag islands on Si(111)-7$\times$7 as a prototype

Various-thickness Ag islands were prepared on Si(111)-7$\times$7 using the one-step deposition at a high substrate temperature. An electronic state centered at -0.40$\sim$-0.15eV versus E$_{Fermi}$, detectable on the surface of the Ag islands thinner than 9 layers, was created by the electronic hybridization between Ag and Si at the Ag-Si interface. Scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy and density functional theory revealed that the thickness of Ag islands determined the strength of the hybridization, leading to a modulation to the energy and intensity of the state on the surface.

Quantum Antiferromagnetism of Fermions in Optical Lattices with Half-filled p-band

We study Fermi gases in a three-dimensional optical lattice with five fermions per site, i.e. the s-band is completely filled and the p-band with three-fold degeneracy is half filled. We show that, for repulsive interaction between fermions, the system will exhibit spin-3/2 antiferromagnetic order at low temperature. This conclusion is obtained in strong interaction regime by strong coupling expansion which yields an isotropic spin-3/2 Heisenberg model, and also in weak interaction regime by Hatree-Fock mean-field theory and analysis of Fermi surface nesting. We show that the critical temperature for this antiferromagnetism of a p-band Mott insulator is about two orders of magnitudes higher than that of an $s$-band Mott insulator, which is close to the lowest temperature attainable nowadays.
