Quantized electromagnetic response of three-dimensional chiral topological insulators

Protected by the chiral symmetry, three dimensional chiral topological insulators are characterized by an integer-valued topological invariant. How this invariant could emerge in physical observables is an important question. Here we show that the magneto-electric polarization can identify the integer-valued invariant if we gap the system without coating a quantum Hall layer on the surface. The quantized response is demonstrated to be robust against weak perturbations. We also study the topological properties by adiabatically coupling two nontrivial phases, and find that gapless states appear and are localized at the boundary region. Finally, an experimental scheme is proposed to realize the Hamiltonian and measure the quantized response with ultracold atoms in optical lattices.

Influence of Helical Spin Structure on the Magnetoresistance of an Ideal Topological Insulator

In an ideal topological insulator, the helical spin structure of surface electrons suppresses backscattering and thus can enhance surface conductivity. We investigate the effect of perpendicular magnetic field on the spin structure of electrons at the Fermi energy and calculate a magnetic-field dependent topological enhancement factor for different disorder potentials, ranging from short-range disorder to screened Coulomb potential. Within the Boltzmann approximation, the topological enhancement factor reaches its maximum value of 4 for a short-range disorder at zero magnetic field and approaches a value of 1 at high magnetic fields independent of the nature of the disorder potential.

Chern-Simons theory of the magnetization plateaus of the spin-1/2 quantum XXZ Heisenberg model on Kagome Lattice

Frustrated spin systems on Kagome lattices have long been considered to be a promising candidate for realizing exotic spin liquid phases. Recently, there has been a lot of renewed interest in these systems with the discovery of materials such as Volborthite and Herbertsmithite that have Kagome like structures. In the presence of an external magnetic field, these frustrated systems can give rise to magnetization plateaus of which the plateau at $m=\frac{1}{3}$ is considered to be the most prominent. Here we study the problem of the antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 quantum XXZ Heisenberg model on a Kagome lattice by using a Jordan-Wigner transformation that maps the spins onto a problem of fermions coupled to a Chern-Simons gauge field. This mapping relies on being able to define a consistent Chern-Simons term on the lattice. Using a recently developed method to rigorously extend the Chern-Simons term to the frustrated Kagome lattice we can now formalize the Jordan-Wigner transformation on the Kagome lattice. We then discuss the possible phases that can arise at the mean-field level from this mapping and focus specifically on the case of $\frac{1}{3}$-filling ($m=\frac{1}{3}$ plateau) and analyze the effects of fluctuations in our theory. We show that in the regime of $XY$ anisotropy the ground state at the $1/3$ plateau is equivalent to a bosonic fractional quantum Hall Laughlin state with filling fraction $1/2$ and that at the $5/9$ plateau it is equivalent to the first bosonic Jain daughter state at filling fraction $2/3$.

Brownian Motion of Arbitrarily Shaped Particles in Two-Dimensions

Here we implement microfabricated boomerang particles with unequal arm lengths as a model for non-symmetry particles and study their Brownian motion in a quasi-two dimensional geometry by using high precision single particle motion tracking. We show that due to the coupling between translation and rotation, the mean squared displacements of a single asymmetric boomerang particle exhibit a non-linear crossover from short time faster to long time slower diffusion, and the mean displacements for fixed initial orientation are non-zero and saturate out at long time. The measured anisotropic diffusion coefficients versus the tracking point position indicate that there exists one unique point, i.e. the center of hydrodynamic stress (CoH), at which all coupled diffusion coefficients vanish. This implies that in contrast to motion in 3D where the CoH only exists for high symmetry particles, the CoH always exists for Brownian motion in 2D. We develop an analytical model based on Langevin theory to explain the experimental results and show that among the 6 anisotropic diffusion coefficients only 5 are independent because the translation-translation coupling originates from the translation-rotation coupling. Finally we classify the behavior of 2D Brownian motion of arbitrarily shaped particles into four groups based on the particle shape symmetry group.

Optimal PMU Placement for Power System Dynamic State Estimation by Using Empirical Observability Gramian

In this paper the empirical observability Gramian calculated around the operating region of a power system is used to quantify the degree of observability of the system states under specific phasor measurement unit (PMU) placement. An optimal PMU placement method for power system dynamic state estimation is further formulated as an optimization problem which maximizes the determinant of the empirical observability Gramian and is efficiently solved by the NOMAD solver, which implements the Mesh Adaptive Direct Search (MADS) algorithm. The implementation, validation, and also the robustness to load fluctuations and contingencies of the proposed method are carefully discussed. The proposed method is tested on WSCC 3-machine 9-bus system and NPCC 48-machine 140-bus system by performing dynamic state estimation with square-root unscented Kalman filter. The simulation results show that the determined optimal PMU placements by the proposed method can guarantee good observability of the system states, which further leads to smaller estimation errors and larger number of convergent states for dynamic state estimation compared with random PMU placements. Under optimal PMU placements an obvious observability transition can be observed. The proposed method is also validated to be very robust to both load fluctuations and contingencies.

Unveiling the microscopic origin of the electronic smectic-nematic phase transition in La1/3Ca2/3MnO3

Electronic-liquid-crystal phases, in which part of the spatial symmetries are broken spontaneously, are considered to play a vital role in interpreting the structure-property relation in strongly-correlated materials. Although electronic-liquid-crystal phases have been inferred in studies of a wide range of materials, the nature of the transition between such phases has received little experimental attention. Here we report the direct observation of an electronic smectic-nematic phase transition in a doped manganite utilizing transmission electron microscopic techniques. We show that, in this case, the transition from the smectic to the nematic phase is driven by two mechanisms: the proliferation of dislocations and the development of mesoscale charge inhomogeneity. We observe the development of dislocation pairs within the commensurate smectic phase on approaching the transition (at 210 +/- 10 K) from below. Above the transition, the incommensurate nematic phase is accompanied by mesoscopic electronic phase separation.

An experimental proposal to observe non-abelian statistics of Majorana-Shockley fermions in an optical lattice

We propose an experimental scheme to observe non-abelian statistics with cold atoms in a two dimensional optical lattice. We show that the Majorana-Schockley modes associated with line defects obey non-abelian statistics and can be created, braided, and fused, all through adiabatic shift of the local chemical potentials. The detection of the topological qubit is transformed to local measurement of the atom number on a single lattice site. We demonstrate the robustness of the braiding operation by incorporating noise and experiential imperfections in numerical simulations, and show that the requirement fits well with the current experimental technology.

An Interaction Model for Simulation and Mitigation of Cascading Failures

In this paper the interactions between component failures are quantified and the interaction matrix and interaction network are obtained. The quantified interactions can capture the general propagation patterns of the cascades from utilities or simulation, thus helping to better understand how cascading failures propagate and to identify key links and key components that are crucial for cascading failure propagation. By utilizing these interactions a high-level probabilistic model called interaction model is proposed to study the influence of interactions on cascading failure risk and to support online decision-making. It is much more time efficient to first quantify the interactions between component failures with fewer original cascades from a more detailed cascading failure model and then perform the interaction model simulation than it is to directly simulate a large number of cascades with a more detailed model. Interaction-based mitigation measures are suggested to mitigate cascading failure risk by weakening key links, which can be achieved in real systems by wide area protection such as blocking of some specific protective relays. The proposed interaction quantifying method and interaction model are validated with line outage data generated by the AC OPA cascading simulations on the IEEE 118-bus system.

SmB6 Photoemission: Past and Present

Recent renewed interest in the mixed valent insulator SmB6 comes from topological theory predictions and surface transport measurements of possible in-gap surface states whose existence is most directly probed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Early photoemission leading up to a recent flurry of ARPES studies of in-gap states is reviewed. Conflicting interpretations about the nature of the Sm 4f-5d hybridization gap and observed X-point bands between the f-states and the Fermi level are critically assessed using the important tools of photon polarization and spatial dependence which also provide additional insight into the origin of the more ambiguous Γ-point in-gap states.

Low-temperature surface conduction in the Kondo insulator SmB$_6$

We study the transport properties of the Kondo insulator SmB$_6$ with a specialized configuration designed to distinguish bulk-dominated conduction from surface-dominated conduction. We find that as the material is cooled below 4 K, it exhibits a crossover from bulk to surface conduction with a fully insulating bulk. We take the robustness and magnitude of the surface conductivity, as is manifest in the literature of SmB$_6$, to be strong evidence for the topological insulator metallic surface states recently predicted for this material.

Brownian Motion of Boomerang Colloidal Particles

We investigate the Brownian motion of boomerang colloidal particles confined between two glass plates. Our experimental observations show that the mean displacements are biased towards the center of hydrodynamic stress (CoH), and that the mean-square displacements exhibit a crossover from short time faster to long time slower diffusion with the short-time diffusion coefficients dependent on the points used for tracking. A model based on Langevin theory elucidates that these behaviors are ascribed to a superposition of two diffusive modes: the ellipsoidal motion of the CoH and the rotational motion of the tracking point with respect to the CoH.

Topological crystalline Kondo insulators and universal topological surface states of SmB$_6$

We prove theoretically that certain strongly correlated Kondo insulators are topological crystalline insulators with nontrivial topology protected by crystal symmetries. In particular, we find that SmB$_6$ is such a material. In addition to a nontrivial Z$_2$ topological index protected by time reversal symmetry, SmB$_6$ also has nontrival mirror Chern numbers protected by mirror symmetries. On the $(100)$ surface of SmB$_6$, the nontrivial mirror Chern numbers do not generate additional surface states beyond those predicted by the Z$_2$ topological index. However, on the $(110)$ surface, two more surface Dirac points are predicted. Remarkably, we find that for SmB$_6$ both the Z$_2$ topological index and the mirror Chern numbers are independent of microscopic details, which enables us to obtain surface state properties that are universal.

Phase estimation with weak measurement using a white light source

We report results of a high precision phase estimation based on a weak measurements scheme using commercial light-emitting diode. The method is based on a measurement of the imaginary part of the weak value of a polarization operator. The imaginary part of the weak value appeared due to the measurement interaction itself. The sensitivity of our method is equivalent to resolving light pulses of order of attosecond and it is robust against chromatic dispersion.

Topological Zero-Energy Modes in Gapless Commensurate Aubry-André-Harper Models

The Aubry-André or Harper (AAH) model has been the subject of extensive theoretical research in the context of quantum localization. Recently, it was shown that one-dimensional quasicrystals described by the incommensurate AAH model has a nontrivial topology. In this Letter, we show that the commensurate off-diagonal AAH model is topologically nontrivial in the gapless regime and supports zero-energy edge modes. Unlike the incommensurate case, the nontrivial topology in the off-diagonal AAH model is attributed to the topological properties of the one-dimensional Majorana chain. We discuss the feasibility of experimental observability of our predicted topological phase in the commensurate AAH model.

Composite pulses for robust universal control of singlet-triplet qubits

Precise qubit manipulation is fundamental to quantum computing, yet experimental systems generally have stray coupling between the qubit and the environment, which hinders the necessary high-precision control. We report here the first theoretical progress in correcting an important class of errors stemming from fluctuations in the magnetic field gradient, in the context of the singlet-triplet spin qubit in a semiconductor double quantum dot. These errors are not amenable to correction via control techniques developed in other contexts, since here the experimenter has precise control only over the rotation rate about the z-axis of the Bloch sphere, and this rate is furthermore restricted to be positive and bounded. Despite these strong constraints, we construct simple electrical pulse sequences that, for small gradients, carry out z-axis rotations while canceling errors up to the sixth order in gradient fluctuations, and for large gradients, carry out arbitrary rotations while canceling the leading order error.

Quantitative verification of the Kibble-Zurek mechanism in quantum non-equilibrium dynamics

The Kibble-Zurek mechanism (KZM) captures the key physics in the non-equilibrium dynamics of second-order phase transitions, and accurately predict the density of the topological defects formed in this process. However, despite much effort, the veracity of the central prediction of KZM, i.e., the scaling of the density production and the transit rate, is still an open question. Here, we performed an experiment, based on a nine-stage optical interferometer with an overall fidelity up to 0.975$\pm$0.008, that directly supports the central prediction of KZM in quantum non-equilibrium dynamics. In addition, our work has significantly upgraded the number of stages of the optical interferometer to nine with a high fidelity, this technique can also help to push forward the linear optical quantum simulation and computation.

Topological flat band models with arbitrary Chern numbers

We report the theoretical discovery of a systematic scheme to produce topological flat bands (TFBs) with arbitrary Chern numbers. We find that generically a multi-orbital high Chern number TFB model can be constructed by considering multi-layer Chern number C=1 TFB models with enhanced translational symmetry. A series of models are presented as examples, including a two-band model on a triangular lattice with a Chern number C=3 and an $N$-band square lattice model with $C=N$ for an arbitrary integer $N$. In all these models, the flatness ratio for the TFBs is larger than 30 and increases with increasing Chern number. In the presence of appropriate inter-particle interactions, these models are likely to lead to the formation of novel Abelian and Non-Abelian fractional Chern insulators. As a simple example, we test the C=2 model with hardcore bosons at 1/3 filling and an intriguing fractional quantum Hall state is observed.
