Transmission electron microscopy and ferromagnetic resonance investigations of tunnel magnetic junctions using Co2MnGe Heusler alloy as magnetic electrodes

HRTEM, nano-beam electronic diffraction, energy dispersive X-rays scanning spectroscopy, Vibrating Sample Magnetometry (VSM) and FerroMagnetic Resonance (FMR) techniques are used in view of comparing (static and dynamic) magnetic and structural properties of Co2MnGe (13 nm)/Al2O3 (3 nm)/Co (13 nm) tunnel magnetic junctions (TMJ), deposited on various single crystalline substrates (a-plane sapphire, MgO(100) and Si(111)). They allow for providing a correlation between these magnetic properties and the fine structure investigated at atomic scale. The Al2O3 tunnel barrier is always amorphous and contains a large concentration of Co atoms, which, however, is significantly reduced when using a sapphire substrate. The Co layer is polycrystalline and shows larger grains for films grown on a sapphire substrate. The VSM investigation reveals in-plane anisotropy only for samples grown on a sapphire substrate. The FMR spectra of the TMJs are compared to the obtained ones with a single Co and Co2MnGe films of identical thickness deposited on a sapphire substrate. As expected, two distinct modes are detected in the TMJs while only one mode is observed in each single film. For the TMJ grown on a sapphire substrate the FMR behavior does not significantly differ from the superposition of the individual spectra of the single films, allowing for concluding that the exchange coupling between the two magnetic layers is too small to give rise to observable shifts. For TMJs grown on a Si or on a MgO substrate the resonance spectra reveal one mode which is nearly identical to the obtained one in the single Co film, while the other observed resonance shows a considerably smaller intensity and cannot be described using the magnetic parameters appropriate to the single Co2MnGe film.

Magnetization dynamics in Co2$MnGe/Al2$O3$/Co tunnel junctions grown on different substrates

We study static and dynamic magnetic properties of Co2MnGe (13 nm)/Al2O3 (3 nm)/Co (13 nm) tunnel magnetic junctions (TMJ), deposited on various single crystalline substrates (a-plane sapphire, MgO(100), Si(111)). The results are compared to the magnetic properties of Co and of Co$_{2}$MnGe single films lying on sapphire substrates. X-rays diffraction always shows a (110) orientation of the Co$_{2}$MnGe films. Structural observations obtained by high resolution transmission electron microscopy confirmed the high quality of the TMJ grown on sapphire. Our vibrating sample magnetometry measurements reveal in-plane anisotropy only in samples grown on a sapphire substrate. Depending on the substrate, the ferromagnetic resonance spectra of the TMJs, studied by the microstrip technique, show one or two pseudo-uniform modes. In the case of MgO and of Si substrates only one mode is observed: it is described by magnetic parameters (g-factor, effective magnetization, in-plane magnetic anisotropy) derived in the frame of a simple expression of the magnetic energy density; these parameters are practically identical to those obtained for the Co single film. With a sapphire substrate two modes are present: one of them does not appreciably differ from the observed mode in the Co single film while the other one is similar to the mode appearing in the Co$_{2}$MnGe single film: their magnetic parameters can thus be determined independently, using a classical model for the energy density in the absence of interlayer exchange coupling.

Evidence for triplet superconductivity in Josephson junctions with ferromagnetic Cu$_{2}$MnAl-Heusler barriers

We have studied Josephson junctions with barriers prepared from the Heusler compound Cu$_2$MnAl. In the as-prepared state the Cu$_2$MnAl layers are non ferromagnetic and the critical Josephson current density $j_{c}$ decreases exponentially with the thickness of the Heusler layers $d_{F}$. On annealing the junctions at 240\degree C the Heusler layers develop ferromagnetic order and we observe a dependence $j_{c}(d_{F}$) with $j_{c}$ strongly enhanced and weakly thickness dependent in the thickness range 7.0 nm < $d_{F}$ < 10.6 nm. We attribute this feature to a triplet component in the superconducting pairing function generated by the specific magnetization profile inside thin Cu$_2$MnAl layers.

Josephson tunnel junctions with ferromagnetic $\Fe_{0.75}\Co_{0.25}$ barriers

Josephson tunnel junctions with the strong ferromagnetic alloy $\Fe_{0.75}\Co_{0.25}$ as the barrier material were studied. The junctions were prepared with high quality down to a thickness range of a few monolayers of Fe-Co. An oscillation length of $ξ_{F2}\approx 0.79\:{\rm {nm}}$ between 0 and $π$-Josephson phase coupling and a very short decay length $ξ_{F1}\approx 0.22\:{\rm {nm}}$ for the amplitude of the superconducting pair wave function in the Fe-Co layer were determined. The rapid damping of the pair wave function inside the Fe-Co layer is caused by the strong ferromagnetic exchange field and additional magnetic pair breaking scattering. Josephson junctions with Fe-Co barriers show a significantly increased tendency towards magnetic remanence and flux trapping for larger thicknesses $d_{F}$.

Experimental Observation of the Inverse Proximity Effect in Superconductor/Ferromagnet Layered Structures

We have studied the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) of 51V nuclei in the superconductor/ferromagnet thin film heterostructures Ni/V/Ni and Pd{1-x}Fe{x}/V/Pd{1-x}Fe{x} in the normaland superconducting state. Whereas the position and shape of the NMR line in the normal state for the trilayers is identical to that observed in a single V-layer, in the superconducting state the line shape definitely changes, developing a systematic distortion of the high-field wing of the resonance line. We consider this as the first experimental evidence for the penetration of ferromagnetism into the superconducting layer, a phenomenon which has been theoretically predicted recently and dubbed the inverse proximity effect.

Optical and magneto-optical properties of ferromagnetic full-Heusler films: experiments and first-principles calculations

We report a joint theoretical and experimental study focused on understanding the optical and magneto-optical properties of Co-based full-Heusler compounds. We show that magneto-optical spectra calculated within ab-initio density functional theory are able to uniquely identify the features of the experimental spectra in terms of spin resolved electronic transitions. As expected for 3d-based magnets, we find that the largest Kerr rotation for these alloys is of the order of 0.3o in polar geometry. In addition, we demonstrate that (i) multilayered structures have to be carefully handled in the theoretical calculations in order to improve the agreement with experiments, and (ii) combined theoretical and experimental investigations constitute a powerful approach to designing new materials for magneto-optical and spin-related applications

Magnetism and structure of magnetic multilayers based on the fully spin polarized Heusler alloys Co2MnGe and Co2MnSn

Our Introduction starts with a short general review of the magnetic and structural properties of the Heusler compounds which are under discussion in this book. Then, more specifically, we come to the discussion of our experimental results on multilayers composed of the Heusler alloys Co2MnGe and Co2MnSn with V or Au as interlayers. The experimental methods we apply combine magnetization and magneto-resistivity measurements, x-ray diffraction and reflectivity, soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism and spin polarized neutron reflectivity. We find that below a critical thickness of the Heusler layers at typically dcr = 1.5 nm the ferromagnetic order is lost and spin glass order occurs instead. For very thin ferromagnetic Heusler layers there are peculiarities in the magnetic order which are unusual when compared to conventional ferromagnetic transition metal multilayer systems. In [Co2MnGe/Au] multilayers there is an exchange bias shift at the ferromagnetic hysteresis loops at low temperatures caused by spin glass ordering at the interface. In [Co2MnGe/V] multilayers we observe an antiferromagnetic interlayer long range ordering below a well defined Neel temperature originating from the dipolar stray fields at the magnetically rough Heusler layer interfaces.

Proximity Effects in Ferromagnet/Superconductor Heterostructures

We review the present status of the experimental and theoretical research on the proximity effect in heterostructures composed of superconducting (S) and ferromagnetic (F) thin films. First, we discuss traditional effects originating from the oscillatory behavior of the superconducting pair wave function in the F-layer. Then, we concentrate on recent theoretical predictions for S/F layer systems. These are a) generation of odd triplet superconductivity in the F-layer and b) ferromagnetism induced in the S-layer below the superconducting transition temperature $T_{c}$ (inverse proximity effect). The second part of the review is devoted to discussion of experiments relevant to the theoretical predictions of the first part. In particular, we present results of measurements of the critical temperature $T_{c}$ as a function of the thickness of F-layers and we review experiments indicating existence of odd triplet superconductivity, cryptoferromagnetism and inverse proximity effect.

Magnetic induction and domain walls in magnetic thin films at remanence

Magnetic domain walls in thin films can be well analyzed using polarized neutron reflectometry. Well defined streaks in the off-specular spin-flip scattering maps are explained by neutron refraction at perpendicular Néel walls. The position of the streaks depends only on the magnetic induction within the domains, whereas the intensity of the off-specular magnetic scattering depends on the spin-flip probability at the domain walls and on the average size of the magnetic domains. This effect is fundamentally different and has to be clearly distinguished from diffuse scattering originating from the size distribution of magnetic domains. Polarized neutron reflectivity experiments were carried out using a $^3$He gas spin-filter with a analyzing power as high as 96% and a neutron transmission of approx 35%. Furthermore, the off-specular magnetic scattering was enhanced by using neutron resonance and neutron standing wave techniques.

Positive and Perpendicular Exchange Bias CoO/Co Bilayers

We have carried out detailed experimental studies of the exchange bias effect of a series of CoO/Co(111) textured bilayers with different Co layer thickness, using the magneto-optical Kerr effect, SQUID magnetometry, polarized neutron reflectivity, x-ray diffraction, and atomic force microscopy. All samples exhibit a pronounced asymmetry of the magnetic hysteresis at the first magnetization reversal as compared to the second reversal. Polarized neutron reflectivity measurements show that the first reversal occurs via nucleation and domain wall motion, while the second reversal is characterized by magnetization rotation. Off-specular diffuse spin-flip scattering indicates the existence of interfacial magnetic domains. All samples feature a small positive exchange bias just below the blocking temperature, followed by a dominating negative exchange bias field with decreasing temperature. For very thin Co-films the coexistence of ferromagnetic domains with parallel and perpendicular magnetization directions leads to a peculiar shape of the hysteresis with an extended plateau like region of almost zero magnetization.

Spin-resolved off-specular neutron scattering from magnetic domain walls using the polarized $^3He$ gas spin filter

We report on the use of the polarized $^3$He gas filter and neutron resonant enhancement techniques for the measurement of spin-polarized diffuse neutron scattering due to ferromagnetic domains. A CoO/Co exchange biased bilayer was grown on a Ti/Cu/$Al_2O_3$ neutron resonator template. The system is cooled in an applied magnetic field of $H_a=2000$ Oe through the Néel temperature of the antiferromagnet to 10 K where the applied magnetic field is swept as to measure the magnetic hysteresis loop. After the second magnetization reversal at the coercive field $H_{c2}=+ 230$ Oe, the system is supposed to approach the original magnetic configuration. In order to prove that this is not the case for our exchange biased bilayer, we have measured four off-specular maps I++, I+-, I-+, I-- at $H_a \approx + 370$ Oe, where the Co magnetic spins were mostly reversed. They show a striking behavior in the total reflection region: while the nonspin-flip scattering exhibits no diffuse reflectivity, the spin-flip scattering shows strong diffuse scattering at incident angles which satisfy the resonance conditions. Moreover the spin-flip off-specular part of the reflectivity is asymmetric. The I-+ intensity occurs at higher exit angles than the specularly reflected neutrons, and the I+- intensity is shifted to lower angles. Their intensities are noticeably different and there is a splitting of the resonance positions for the up and down neutron spins ($α_{n} ^{+} \ne α_{n} ^{-}$) . Additionally, a strong influence of the stray fields from magnetic domains to the resonance splitting is observed.

Preparation and structural properties of thin films and multilayers of the Heusler compounds Cu2MnAl, Co2MnSn, Co2MnSi and Co2MnGe

We report on the preparation of thin films and multilayers of the intermetallic Heusler compound CuMnAl, Co2MnSn, Co2MnSi and Co2MnGe by rf-sputtering on MgO and Al2O3 substrates. Cu2MnAl can be grown epitaxially with (100)-orientation on MgO (100) and in (110)-orientation on Al2O3 a-plane. The Co based Heusler alloys need metallic seedlayers to induce high quality textured growth. We also have prepared multilayers with smooth interfaces by combining the Heusler compounds with Au and V. An analysis of the ferromagnetic saturation magnetization of the films indicates that the Cu2MnAl-compound tends to grow in the disordered B2-type structure whereas the Co-based Heusler alloy thin films grow in the ordered L21 structure. All multilayers with thin layers of the Heusler compounds exhibit a definitely reduced ferromagnetic magnetization indicating substantial disorder and intermixing at the interfaces.

Exchange bias in [Co2MnGe/Au],[Co2MnGe/Cr] and [Co2MnGe/Cu2MnAl] multilayers

We report structural and magnetic properties of multilayers composed of thin layers of the half metallic ferromagnetic Heusler compound Co2MnGe and layers of Au, Cr and the Heusler compound Cu2MnAl. The hysteresis loops measured at low temperatures reveal the existence of an exchange bias field HEB in all of these multilayers. For the [Co2MnGe/Au] multilayer system HEB is largest reaching up to 1 kOe at a temperature of 2 K. We characterize the exchange bias phenomenon in detail and show that it originates from a spin glass type of magnetic order for a thin interlayer at the interfaces. We discuss the results in the light of different models proposed for the explanation of the exchange bias effect.
