Development of a Neural Network-Based Background Suppression Technique for $\Sigma N$ Cusp Spectroscopy at J-PARC

A clear spectral enhancement, known as the ``$\Sigma N$ cusp'', has been observed near the $\Sigma N$ threshold in the $d(K^-, \pi^-)$ reaction. To understand the dynamical origin of this enhancement, the J-PARC E90 experiment aims to investigate the missing-mass spectrum with an unprecedented resolution of 0.4 MeV ($\sigma$). In this experiment, a Hyperon Time Projection Chamber (HypTPC) is utilized to detect charged decay products and suppress severe contamination from quasi-free (QF) background processes. While a conventional track multiplicity condition of three (Mt=3) effectively suppresses these QF events, it restricts the signal statistics to approximately 17\% and introduces a mass-dependent acceptance bias that distorts the spectrum. In contrast, events with a track multiplicity of two (Mt=2) offer roughly double the statistical power ($\sim$39\%) with minimal mass dependence, but they suffer from heavy background contamination. To fully exploit the Mt=2 events, we developed an innovative background suppression technique based on a neural network. By constructing a binary classification model using the HypTPC track topology and energy loss ($dE/dx$) as input features, we successfully discriminated the signal from QF backgrounds. This machine learning approach achieves a signal-to-noise ratio comparable to the strict Mt=3 condition while preserving the integrity of the spectral shape. By combining this independent ML-selected Mt=2 sample with the conventional Mt=3 sample, the total usable statistics are effectively doubled compared to traditional methods, significantly enhancing the sensitivity for determining the $\Sigma N$ cusp parameters.

Measurement of $^{3,4}$He($K^-, \pi^0$)$^{3,4}_\Lambda$H reaction cross section and evaluation of hypertriton $\Lambda$ binding energy

Light $s$-shell hypernuclei ($^{3,4}_{\Lambda}\text{H}$) and their ground-state properties are crucial benchmarks in hypernuclear physics. In particular, comparing the production cross sections of $^{3}_{\Lambda}\text{H}$ and $^{4}_{\Lambda}\text{H}$ provides insights into the $\Lambda N$ interaction in different isospin configurations, which can help address recent discrepancies in the reported $\Lambda$ binding energy of hypertriton. We present the first measurement of the production cross sections for $^{3}_{\Lambda}\text{H}$ and $^{4}_{\Lambda}\text{H}$ using the in-flight $(K^-, \pi^0)$ reaction at a beam momentum of 1.0 GeV/$c$ with an identical experimental setup. The production cross sections in the laboratory frame, for the angular range from 0$^{\circ}$ to 20$^{\circ}$, are measured to be $15.0~\pm~2.6~(\text{stat.})~^{+2.4}_{-2.8}~(\text{syst.})~\mu \text{b} $ and $49.9~\pm~2.1~(\text{stat.})~^{+7.8}_{-8.0}~(\text{syst.})~\mu \text{b}$ for the ground-state of $^{3}_{\Lambda}\text{H}$ and $^{4}_{\Lambda}\text{H}$, respectively. Using the ratio of these cross sections and comparing it with theoretical calculations, we evaluate the $\Lambda$ binding energy of hypertriton, yielding a value consistent with the picture of a loosely bound system.

Measurement of $\Lambda$ Polarization in the $\pi^{-}p \to K^{0} \Lambda$ Reaction at $p_{\pi^{-}}=1.33$ GeV/$c$ toward a New $\Lambda p$ Scattering Experiment

This paper presents high-precision experimental data of the polarization of the $\Lambda$ hyperon in the $\pi^{-}p \to K^{0} \Lambda$ reaction, measured in the angular range $0.6<\cos \theta ^{CM}_{K0}<1.0$ with a fine bin width of $d\cos \theta ^{CM}_{K0}=0.05$. The data were obtained from the J-PARC E40 experiment at the K1.8 beamline in the J-PARC Hadron Experimental Facility. The observed average polarization of $\Lambda$ in the range $0.60<\cos \theta ^{CM}_{K0}<0.85$ was $0.932 \pm 0.058 \,(\text{stat}) \pm 0.028 \,(\text{syst})$, demonstrating the successful extraction of precise polarization observables. This result provides essential experimental input for partial wave analysis (PWA) of dynamical coupled-channel (DCC) models, which aim to uncover the underlying mechanisms of $N^{*}$ resonances that emerge in intermediate states of $\pi N$ and $\gamma N$ interactions. Besides, it indicates the feasibility of a strongly polarized $\Lambda$ beam suitable for future $\Lambda p$ scattering experiments (e.g., J-PARC E86).

Measurement of the mesonic decay branch of the $\bar{K}\!N\!N$ quasi-bound state

We conducted measurements of $K^- + {^3{\rm He}} \to \pi \!Y \!N + N'$ reactions using a $1~{\rm GeV}/c$ $K^-$-beam, with the objective of understanding the broad decay width of $\bar{K} \!N \!N$ (approximately twice as broad as that of $\Lambda(1405)$ considered to be the $\bar{K} \!N$ quasi-bound state). We successfully reproduced distributions of the $\pi \! Y \! N$ invariant mass and momentum transfer for $\pi \! Y \! N$ using model fitting functions for $\bar{K} \!N \!N$ formation and quasi-free $\bar{K}$ absorption (${\rm QF}_{\bar{K}-{\rm abs}}$) processes. The model can describe the experimental data quite well, and four $\bar{K} \! N \! N \to \pi \! Y \! N $ cross-sections were obtained. The results indicate that mesonic decay is the dominant decay branch of $\bar{K} \! N \! N$. The results also suggest that $\Gamma_{\pi \Lambda N} \sim \Gamma_{\pi \Sigma N}$, which indicates that the $I_{\bar{K} \! N}=1$ absorption channel, in addition to the $I_{\bar{K} \! N}=0$ absorption channel, substantially contribute to the $\bar{K} \! N \! N$ decay, making the $\bar{K} \! N \! N$ state approximately twice as unstable as $\Lambda$(1405).

Anti-deuteron beam study at J-PARC HEF K1.8 beam line

We performed a $\overline{d}$ beam study at the K1.8 beam line of J-PARC Hadron Experimental Facility. 1.8 GeV/$c$ $\overline{d}$ beam yield was measured to be 0.30 $\pm$ 0.04 counts/spill for 30 GeV 70 $\times 10^{12}$ protons/spill irradiated on a 66 mm thick of gold target with the vertical slit opening widths of 2.2 mm, 5 mm and 5 mm for intermediate focus (IFV), mass slit 1 (MS1) and 2 (MS2), respectively. Corresponding $\overline{p}$ beam yield is roughly estimated to be $\sim$ 0.3 Mcounts/spill for the same slit condition. Then, the $\overline{d}/\overline{p}$ production ratio at extraction angle of 6 degrees is estimated to be $\sim 10^{-6}$. This is the first time measurement of the $\overline{d}$ beam yield and $\overline{d}/\overline{p}$ production ratio at J-PARC. Further beam line tuning may increase the $\overline{d}$ beam yield.

Measurement of the transverse single-spin asymmetry for forward neutron production in a wide $p_T$ range in polarized $p+p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 510$ GeV

Transverse single-spin asymmetries $A_{\textrm{N}}$ of forward neutrons at pseudorapidities larger than 6 had only been studied in the transverse momentum range of $p_{\textrm{T}} < 0.4$ GeV/$c$. The RHICf Collaboration has extended the previous measurements up to 1.0 GeV/$c$ in polarized $p+p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}~=~510$GeV, using an electromagnetic calorimeter installed in the zero-degree area of the STAR detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The resulting $A_{\textrm{N}}$s increase in magnitude with $p_{\textrm{T}}$ in the high longitudinal momentum fraction $x_{\textrm{F}}$ range, but reach a plateau at lower $p_{\textrm{T}}$ for lower $x_{\textrm{F}}$. For low transverse momenta the $A_{\textrm{N}}$s show little $x_{\textrm{F}}$ dependence and level off from intermediate values. For higher transverse momenta the $A_{\textrm{N}}$s show also an indication to reach a plateau at increased magnitudes. The results are consistent with previous measurements at lower collision energies, suggesting no $\sqrt{s}$ dependence of the neutron asymmetries. A theoretical model based on the interference of $\pi$ and $a_1$ exchange between two protons could partially reproduce the current results, however an additional mechanism is necessary to describe the neutron $A_{\textrm{N}}$s over the whole kinematic region measured.

Precise lifetime measurement of $^4_\Lambda$H hypernucleus using in-flight $^4$He$(K^-, \pi^0)^4_\Lambda$H reaction

We present a new measurement of the $^4_\Lambda$H hypernuclear lifetime using in-flight $K^-$ + $^4$He $\rightarrow$ $^4_\Lambda$H + $\pi^0$ reaction at the J-PARC hadron facility. We demonstrate, for the first time, the effective selection of the hypernuclear bound state using only the $\gamma$-ray energy decayed from $\pi^0$. This opens the possibility for a systematic study of isospin partner hypernuclei through comparison with data from ($K^-$, $\pi^-$) reaction. As the first application of this method, our result for the $^4_\Lambda$H lifetime, $\tau(^4_\Lambda \mathrm{H}) = 206 \pm 8 (\mathrm{stat.}) \pm 12 (\mathrm{syst.})\ \mathrm{ps}$, is one of the most precise measurements to date. We are also preparing to measure the lifetime of the hypertriton ($^3_\Lambda$H) using the same setup in the near future.

Study of the lineshape of $X(3872)$ using $B$ decays to $D^0\overline{D}{}^{*0}K$

We present a study of the $X(3872)$ lineshape in the decay $B \to X(3872)K\to D^0\overline{D}{}^{*0}K$ using a data sample of $772\times 10^6$ $B\overline{B}$ pairs collected at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. The peak near the threshold in the $D^0\overline{D}{}^{*0}$ invariant mass spectrum is fitted using a relativistic Breit-Wigner lineshape. We determine the mass and width parameters to be $m = 3873.71 ^{+0.56}_{-0.50} ({\rm stat}) \pm0.13 ({\rm syst}) ~{\rm MeV}/c^2$ and $\Gamma_0 = 5.2 ^{+2.2}_{-1.5} ({\rm stat}) \pm 0.4 ({\rm syst})~{\rm MeV}$, respectively. The branching fraction is found to be ${\cal B} (B^+\to X(3872)K^+) \times {\cal{B}}(X(3872) \to D^0\overline{D}{}^{*0}) = (0.97 ^{+0.21}_{-0.18} ({\rm stat}) \pm 0.10 ({\rm syst})) \times 10^{-4}$. The signal from $B^0$ decays is observed for the first time with $5.2\sigma$ significance, and the ratio of branching fractions between charged and neutral $B$ decays is measured to be ${\cal B}(B^0\to X(3872)K^0)/{\cal B}(B^+ \to X(3872)K^+) = 1.34^{+0.47}_{-0.40} ({\rm stat}) ^{+0.10}_{-0.12} ({\rm syst})$. The peak is also studied using a Flatt\'{e} lineshape. We determine the lower limit on the $D\overline{D}{}^{*}$ coupling constant $g$ to be $0.075$ at 95% credibility in the parameter region where the ratio of $g$ to the mass difference from the $D^0\overline{D}{}^{*0}$ threshold is equal to $-15.11~{\rm GeV}^{-1}$, as measured by LHCb.

First Observation of $\Lambda\pi^+$ and $\Lambda\pi^-$ Signals near the $\bar{K}N (I=1)$ Mass Threshold in $\Lambda_c^+\rightarrow\Lambda\pi^+\pi^+\pi^-$ Decay

Using the data sample of 980 fb$^{-1}$ collected with the Belle detector operating at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider, we present the results of an investigation of the $\Lambda\pi^+$ and $\Lambda\pi^-$ invariant mass distributions looking for substructure in the decay $\Lambda_c^+\rightarrow\Lambda\pi^+\pi^+\pi^-$. We find a significant signal in each mass dis\ tribution. When interpreted as resonances, we find for the $\Lambda\pi^+$ ($\Lambda\pi^-$) combination a mass of $1434.3 \pm 0.6 (\mathrm{stat}) \pm 0.9(\mathrm{syst})$ MeV/$c^2$ [$1438.5 \pm 0.9 (\mathrm{stat}) \pm 2.5(\mathrm{syst})$ MeV/$c^2$], an intrinsic width of $11.5 \pm 2.8 (\mathrm{stat}) \pm 5.3(\mathrm{syst})$ MeV/$c^2$ [$33.0 \pm 7.5 (\mathrm{stat}) \pm 23.6(\mathrm{syst})$ MeV/$c^2$] with a significance of 7.5$\sigma$ (6.2$\sigma$). As these two signals are very close to the $\bar{K}N$ threshold, we also investigate the possibility of a $\bar{K}N$ cusp, and find that \ we cannot discriminate between these two interpretations due to the limited size of the data sample.

Pole position of $\Lambda(1405)$ measured in $d(K^-,n)\pi\Sigma$ reactions

We measured a set of $\pi^\pm\Sigma^\mp$, $\pi^0\Sigma^0$, and $\pi^-\Sigma^0$ invariant mass spectra below and above the $\bar{K}N$ mass threshold in $K^-$-induced reactions on deuteron. We deduced the $S$-wave $\bar{K}N\rightarrow\pi\Sigma$ and $\bar{K}N\rightarrow\bar{K}N$ scattering amplitudes in the isospin 0 channel in the framework of a $\bar{K}N$ and $\pi\Sigma$ coupled channel. We find that a resonance pole corresponding to $\Lambda(1405)$ is located at 1417.7$^{+6.0}_{-7.4}$(fitting errors)$^{+1.1}_{-1.0}$(systematic errors) + $[-26.1^{+6.0}_{-7.9}$(fitting errors)$^{+1.7}_{-2.0}$(systematic errors)]$i$ MeV/$c^2$, closer to the $\bar{K}N$ mass threshold than the value determined by the Particle Data Group.

Measurement of forward photon production cross-section in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 510 GeV with RHICf detector

This study reported the inclusive differential production cross-section of photons in six pseudorapidity regions: 6.1 < $\eta$ < 6.5, 6.5 < $\eta$ < 7.0, 7.0 < $\eta$ <7.5, 7.5 < $\eta$ <8.0, 8.0 < $\eta$ < 8.5, and $\eta$ > 8.5, measured through the RHICf experiment with pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 510 GeV conducted in June 2017. In addition, the cross-sections in the three regions of the $x_F$-$p_T$ phase space coverage that are same as those of the LHCf results at $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 and 13 TeV were obtained and compared. Considering the uncertainties, the results were observed to be consistent with both the Feynman scaling law and the model predictions of EPOS-LHC, QGSJET-II-04, Sibyll 2.3d, and DPMjet-III 2019.1, although certain models exhibited weak collision energy dependencies.

Measurement of differential cross sections for $\Sigma^+p$ elastic scattering in the momentum range 0.44-0.80 GeV/c

We performed a novel $\Sigma^+ p$ scattering experiment at the J-PARC Hadron Experimental Facility. Approximately 2400 $\Sigma^+ p$ elastic scattering events were identified from $4.9 \times 10^7$ tagged $\Sigma^+$ particles in the $\Sigma^+$ momentum range 0.44 -- 0.80 GeV/$c$. The differential cross sections of the $\Sigma^+ p$ elastic scattering were derived with much better precision than in previous experiments. The obtained differential cross sections were approximately 2 mb/sr or less, which were not as large as those predicted by the fss2 and FSS models based on the quark cluster model in the short-range region. By performing phase-shift analyses for the obtained differential cross sections, we experimentally derived the phase shifts of the $^3 S_1$ and $^1 P_1$ channels for the first time. The phase shift of the $^3 S_1$ channel, where a large repulsive core was predicted owing to the Pauli effect between quarks, was evaluated as $20^\circ<|\delta_{^3S_1}|<35^\circ$. If the sign of $\delta_{^3S_1}$ is assumed to be negative, the interaction in this channel is moderately repulsive, as the Nijmegen extended-sort-core models predicted.

Precise measurement of differential cross sections of the {\Sigma}-p --> {\Lambda} n reaction in momentum range 470-650 MeV/c

The differential cross sections of the {\Sigma}-p --> {\Lambda} n reaction were measured accurately for the {\Sigma}- momentum (p_{{\Sigma}}) ranging from 470 to 650 MeV/c at the J-PARC Hadron Experimental Facility. Precise angular information about the {\Sigma}-p --> {\Lambda} n reaction was obtained for the first time by detecting approximately 100 reaction events at each angular step of {\Delta}cos{\theta} = 0.1. The obtained differential cross sections show slightly forward-peaking structure in the measured momentum regions. The cross sections integrated for -0.7 < cos{\theta} < 1.0 were obtained as 22.5 +- 0.68 (stat.) +- 0.65 (syst.) mb and 15.8 +-0.83(stat.) +- 0.52 (syst.) mb for 470<p_{{\Sigma}}(MeV/c)<550 and 550<p_{{\Sigma}}(MeV/c)<650, respectively. These results show a drastic improvement compared to past measurements of the hyperon-proton scattering experiments. They will play essential roles in updating the theoretical models of the baryon-baryon interactions.

Recent results and future prospects of kaonic nuclei at J-PARC

$\bar K$-nuclear bound systems, kaonic nuclei, have been widely discussed as products of the strongly attractive $\bar K N$ interaction in $I = 0$ channels. Recently, we demonstrated that kaonic nuclei can be produced via in-flight $(K^-,N)$ reactions using the low-momentum DC kaon beam at the J-PARC E15 experiment. We observed the simplest kaonic nuclei, $K^-pp$, having a much deeper binding energy than normal nuclei. For further studies, we have proposed a series of experimental programs for the systematic investigation of light kaonic nuclei, from $\bar K N$ ($\Lambda(1405)$) to $\bar K NNNN$. In the new experiment approved as J-PARC E80, we will measure the $\bar K NNN$ ($A=3$) system as a first step toward a comprehensive study.

Performance of RHICf detector during operation in 2017

In the RHIC forward (RHICf) experiment, an operation with pp collisions was performed at $\sqrt{s}\,=\,$510 GeV from 24-27 June 2017. The performances, energy and position resolutions, trigger efficiency, stability, and background during the operation, have been studied using data and simulations, which revealed that the requirements for production cross-section and transverse single-spin asymmetry measurements of very forward photons, $\pi^0$s, and neutrons were satisfied. In this paper, we describe the details of these studies.

Measurement of the differential cross sections of the Sigma-p elastic scattering in momentum range of 470 to 850 MeV/c

A high statistics $\Sigma p$ scattering experiment has been performed at the J-PARC Hadron Experimental Facility. Data for momentum-tagged $\Sigma^{-}$ running in a liquid hydrogen target were accumulated by detecting the $\pi^{-}p \to K^{+}\Sigma^{-}$ reaction with a high intensity $\pi^{-}$ beam of 20 M/spill. Differential cross sections of the $\Sigma^{-}p$ elastic scattering were derived with a drastically improved accuracy by identifying the largest statistics of about 4,500 events from 1.72 $\times$ $10^{7}$ $\Sigma^{-}$. The derived differential cross section shows a clear forward-peaking angular distribution for a $\Sigma^{-}$ momentum range from 470 to 850 MeV/$c$. The accurate data will impose a strong constraint on the theoretical models of the baryon-baryon interactions.

First observation of a nuclear $s$-state of $\Xi$ hypernucleus, $^{15}_{\Xi}{\rm C}$

Bound-systems of $\Xi^-$--$^{14}_{}{\rm N}$ are studied via $\Xi^-$ capture at rest followed by emission of a twin single-$\Lambda$ hypernucleus in the emulsion detectors. Two events forming extremely deep $\Xi^-$ bound states were obtained by analysis of a hybrid method in the E07 experiment at J-PARC and reanalysis of the E373 experiment at KEK-PS. The decay mode of one event was assigned as $\Xi^-+^{14}_{}{\rm N}\to^{5}_{\Lambda}{\rm He}$+$^{5}_{\Lambda}{\rm He}$+$^{4}_{}{\rm He}$+n. Since there are no excited states for daughter particles, the binding energy of the $\Xi^-$ hyperon, $B_{\Xi^-}$, in $^{14}_{}{\rm N}$ nucleus was uniquely determined to be 6.27 $\pm$ 0.27 MeV. Another $\Xi^-$--$^{14}_{}{\rm N}$ system via the decay $^{9}_{\Lambda}{\rm Be}$ + $^{5}_{\Lambda}{\rm He}$ + n brings a $B_{\Xi^-}$ value, 8.00 $\pm$ 0.77 MeV or 4.96 $\pm$ 0.77 MeV, where the two possible values of $B_{\Xi^-}$ correspond to the ground and the excited states of the daughter $^{9}_{\Lambda}{\rm Be}$ nucleus, respectively. Because the $B_{\Xi^-}$ values are larger than those of the previously reported events (KISO and IBUKI), which are both interpreted as the nuclear $1p$ state of the $\Xi^-$--$^{14}_{}{\rm N}$ system, these new events give the first indication of the nuclear $1s$ state of the $\Xi$ hypernucleus, $^{15}_{\Xi}{\rm C}$.

Observation of Coulomb-assisted nuclear bound state of $\Xi^-$-$^{14}$N system

In an emulsion-counter hybrid experiment performed at J-PARC, a $\Xi^-$ absorption event was observed which decayed into twin single-$\Lambda$ hypernuclei. Kinematic calculations enabled a unique identification of the reaction process as $\Xi^{-} + ^{14}$N$\ \rightarrow\ ^{10}_\Lambda$Be + $^5_\Lambda$He. For the binding energy of the $\Xi^{-}$ hyperon in the $\Xi^-$-$^{14}$N system a value of $1.27 \pm 0.21$ MeV was deduced. The energy level of $\Xi^-$ is likely a nuclear $1p$ state which indicates a weak ${\Xi}N$-$\Lambda\Lambda$ coupling.
