Spectroscopic signature of trimer Mott insulator and charge disproportionation in BaIrO$_3$

We have measured the reflectivity spectra of the barium iridate $9R$ BaIrO$_3$, the crystal structure of which consists of characteristic Ir$_3$O$_{12}$ trimers. In the high-temperature phase above the transition temperature $T_c\simeq180$ K, we find that the optical conductivity involves two temperature-dependent optical transitions with an ill-defined Drude response. These features are reminiscent of the optical spectra in the organic dimer Mott insulators, implying a possible emergence of an unusual electronic state named trimer Mott insulator in BaIrO$_3$, where the carrier is localized on the trimer owing to the strong Coulomb repulsion. Along with a pronounced splitting of the phonon peak observed below $T_c$, which is a hallmark of charge disproportionation, we discuss a possible phase transition from the trimer Mott insulator to a charge-ordered insulating phase in BaIrO$_3$.

Missing-mass spectroscopy with the ${}^{6}$Li($\pi^{-}, K^{+}$)X reaction to search for ${}^{6}_{\Lambda}$H

We searched for the bound state of the neutron-rich $\Lambda$-hypernucleus ${}^{6}_{\Lambda}$H, using the ${}^{6}$Li($\pi^{-}, K^{+}$)X double charge-exchange reaction at a $\pi^{-}$ beam momentum of 1.2 GeV/c at J-PARC. A total of $1.4 \times 10^{12}$ $\pi^{-}$ was driven onto a ${}^{6}$Li target of 3.5-g/$\rm cm^2$ thickness. No event was observed below the bound threshold, i.e., the mass of ${}^{4}_{\Lambda}$H + 2n, in the missing-mass spectrum of the ${}^{6}$Li($\pi^{-}, K^{+}$)X reaction in the $2^{\circ}$ < $\theta_{\pi K}$ < $20^{\circ}$ angular range. Furthermore, no event was found up to 2.8 MeV/$c^2$ above the bound threshold. We obtained the the double-differential cross section spectra of the ${}^{6}$Li($\pi^{-}, K^{+}$)X reaction in the angular range of $2^{\circ}$ < $\theta_{\pi K}$ < $14^{\circ}$. An upper limit of 0.56 nb/sr (90% C.L.) was obtained for the production cross section of the ${}^{6}_{\Lambda}$H hypernucleus bound state. In addition, not only the bound state region, but also the $\Lambda$ continuum region and part of the $\Sigma^{-}$ quasi-free production region of the ${}^{6}$Li($\pi^{-}, K^{+}$)X reaction, were obtained with high statistics. The present missing-mass spectrum will facilitate the investigation of the $\Sigma^{-}$-nucleus optical potential for $\Sigma^{-}$-${}^{5}$He through spectrum shape analysis.

Observation of Spin-Dependent Charge Symmetry Breaking in $ΛN$ Interaction: Gamma-Ray Spectroscopy of $^4_{Λ}$He

The energy spacing between the ground-state spin doublet of $^4_Λ$He(1$^+$,0$^+$) was determined to be $1406 \pm 2 \pm 2$ keV, by measuring $γ$ rays for the $1^+ \to 0^+$ transition with a high efficiency germanium detector array in coincidence with the $^4$He$(K^-,π^-)$ $^4_Λ$He reaction at J-PARC. In comparison to the corresponding energy spacing in the mirror hypernucleus $^4_Λ$H, the present result clearly indicates the existence of charge symmetry breaking (CSB) in $ΛN$ interaction. It is also found that the CSB effect is large in the $0^+$ ground state but is by one order of magnitude smaller in the $1^+$ excited state, demonstrating that the $ΛN$ CSB interaction has spin dependence.

Search for $^6_Λ$H hypernucleus by the $^6$Li$(π^-,K^+)$ reaction at $p_{π^-}$ = 1.2 GeV/$c$

We have carried out an experiment to search for a neutron-rich hypernucleus, $^6_Λ$H, by the $^6$Li($π^-,K^+$) reaction at $p_{π^-}$ =1.2 GeV/$c$. The obtained missing mass spectrum with an estimated energy resolution of 3.2 MeV (FWHM) showed no peak structure corresponding to the $^6_Λ$H hypernucleus neither below nor above the $^4_Λ$H$+2n$ particle decay threshold. An upper limit of the production cross section for the bound $^6_Λ$H hypernucleus was estimated to be 1.2 nb/sr at 90% confidence level.

Flavor Mixing in the Gauge-Higgs Unification

Gauge-Higgs unification is the fascinating scenario solving the hierarchy problem without supersymmetry. In this scenario, the Standard Model (SM) Higgs doublet is identified with extra component of the gauge field in higher dimensions and its mass becomes finite and stable under quantum corrections due to the higher dimensional gauge symmetry. On the other hand, Yukawa coupling is provided by the gauge coupling, which seems to mean that the flavor mixing and CP violation do not arise at it stands. In this talk, we discuss that the flavor mixing is originated from simultaneously non-diagonalizable bulk and brane mass matrices. Then, this mechanism is applied to various flavor changing neutral current (FCNC) processes via Kaluza-Klein (KK) gauge boson exchange at tree level and constraints for compactification scale are obtained.

Comparative study of macroscopic quantum tunneling in Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_y intrinsic Josephson junctions with different device structures

We investigated macroscopic quantum tunneling (MQT) of Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_y$ intrinsic Josephson junctions (IJJs) with two device structures. One is a nanometer-thick small mesa structure with only two or three IJJs and the other is a stack of a few hundreds of IJJs on a narrow bridge structure. Experimental results of switching current distribution for the first switching events from zero-voltage state showed a good agreement with the conventional theory for a single Josephson junction, indicating that a crossover temperature from thermal activation to MQT regime for the former device structure was as high as that for the latter device structure. Together with the observation of multiphoton transitions between quantized energy levels in MQT regime, these results strongly suggest that the observed MQT behavior is intrinsic to a single IJJ in high-$T_c$ cuprates, independent of device structures. The switching current distribution for the second switching events from the first resistive state, which were carefully distinguished from the first switchings, was also compared between two device structures. In spite of the difference in the heat transfer environment, the second switching events for both devices were found to show a similar temperature-independent behavior up to a much higher temperature than the crossover temperature for the first switching. We argue that it cannot be explained in terms of the self-heating owing to dissipative currents after the first switching. As possible candidates, the MQT process for the second switching and the effective increase of electronic temperature due to quasiparticle injection are discussed.

New Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer-type theory at finite temperature with particle-number conservation

We formulate a new Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS)-type theory at finite temperature, by deriving a set of variational equations of the free energy after the particle-number projection. With its broad applicability, this theory can be a useful tool for investigating the pairing phase transition in finite systems with the particle-number conservation. This theory provides effects of the symmetry-restoring fluctuation (SRF) for the pairing phenomena in finite fermionic systems, distinctively from those of additional quantum fluctuations. It is shown by numerical calculations that the phase transition is compatible with the conservation in this theory, and that the SRF shifts up the critical temperature ($T^\mathrm{cr}$). This shift of $T^\mathrm{cr}$ occurs due to reduction of degrees-of-freedom in canonical ensembles, and decreases only slowly as the particle-number increases (or as the level spacing narrows), in contrast to the conventional BCS theory.

Effects of particle-number conservation on heat capacity of nuclei

By applying the particle-number projection to the finite-temperature BCS theory, the $S$-shaped heat capacity, which has recently been claimed to be a fingerprint of the superfluid-to-normal phase transition in nuclei, is reexamined. It is found that the particle-number (or number-parity) projection gives $S$-shapes in the heat capacity of nuclei which look qualitatively similar to the observed ones. These $S$-shapes are accounted for as effects of the particle-number conservation on the quasiparticle excitations, and occur even when we keep the superfluidity at all temperatures by assuming a constant gap in the BCS theory. The present study illustrates significance of the conservation laws in studying phase transitions of finite systems.

Quantum number projection at finite temperature via thermofield dynamics

Applying the thermo field dynamics, we reformulate exact quantum number projection in the finite-temperature Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory. Explicit formulae are derived for the simultaneous projection of particle number and angular momentum, in parallel to the zero-temperature case. We also propose a practical method for the variation-after-projection calculation, by approximating entropy without conflict with the Peierls inequality. The quantum number projection in the finite-temperature mean-field theory will be useful to study effects of quantum fluctuations associated with the conservation laws on thermal properties of nuclei.

TV Corvi Revisited: Precursor and Superhump Period Derivative Linked to the Disk Instability Model

We report optical photometric observations of four superoutbursts of the short-period dwarf nova TV Crv. This object experiences two types of superoutbursts; one with a precursor and the other without. The superhump period and period excess of TV Crv are accurately determined to be 0.065028 +/- 0.000008 d and 0.0342 +/- 0.0021, respectively. This large excess implies a relatively large mass ratio of the binary components (M_2/M_1), though it has a short orbital period. The two types of superoutbursts can be explained by the thermal-tidal instability model for systems having large mass ratios. Our observations reveal that superhump period derivatives are variable in distinct superoutbursts. The variation is apparently related to the presence or absence of a precursor. We propose that the superhump period derivative depends on the maximum disk radius during outbursts. We investigate the relationship of the type of superoutbursts and the superhump period derivative for known sources. In the case of superoutbursts without a precursor, superhump period derivatives tend to be larger than those in precursor-main type superoutbursts, which is consistent with our scenario.

A New SU UMa-Type Dwarf Nova, QW Serpentis (= TmzV46)

We report on the results of the QW Ser campaign which has been continued from 2000 to 2003 by the VSNET collaboration team. Four long outbursts and many short ones were caught during this period. Our intensive photometric observations revealed superhumps with a period of 0.07700(4) d during all four superoutbursts, proving the SU UMa nature of this star. The recurrence cycles of the normal outbursts and the superoutbursts were measured to be $\sim$50 days and 240(30) days, respectively. The change rate of the superhump period was -5.8x10^{-5}. The distance and the X-ray luminosity in the range of 0.5-2.4 keV are estimated to be 380(60) pc and log L_x = 31.0 \pm 0.1 erg s^{-1}. These properties have typical values for an SU UMa-type dwarf nova with this superhump period.

Outburst and Post-Outburst Active Phase of the Black Hole X-ray Binary V4641 Sgr in 2002

The black hole X-ray binary V4641 Sgr experienced an outburst in 2002 May which was detected at X-ray, optical, and radio wavelengths. The outburst lasted for only 6 days, but the object remained active for the next several months. Here we report on the detailed properties of light curves during the outburst and the post-outburst active phase. We reveal that rapid optical variations of ~100 s became more prominent when a thermal flare weakened and the optical spectrum flattened in the Ic, Rc, and V-band region. In conjunction with the flat spectrum in the radio range, this strongly indicates that the origin of rapid variations is not thermal emission, but synchrotron emission. Just after the outburst, we detected repeated flares at optical and X-ray wavelengths. The optical and X-ray light curves exhibited a strong correlation, with the X-rays, lagging by about 7 min. The X-ray lag can be understood in terms of a hot region propagating into the inner region of the accretion flow. The short X-ray lag, however, requires modifications of this simple scenario to account for the short propagation time. We also detected rapid optical variations with surprisingly high amplitude 50 days after the outburst, which we call optical flashes. During the most prominent optical flash, the object brightened by 1.2 mag only within 30 s. The released energy indicates that the emission source should be at the innermost region of the accretion flow.

Period change of Superhumps in the WZ Sge-Type Dwarf Nova, HV Virginis

After 10 years of quiescence, HV Vir underwent a superoutburst in January 2002. We report time-series observations clearly revealing the period change of ordinary superhumps during the superoutburst. We derived a mean superhump period of 0.058260 d and a positive period derivative of $7 \times 10^{-5}$. These results are in good agreement with the value obtained from the 1992 superoutburst. We also detected early superhumps, which were not clearly recognized in the past outburst, and a possible rebrightening. Both of them are the common characteristics of WZ Sge-type stars.

In-the-Gap SU UMa-Type Dwarf Nova, Var73 Dra with a Supercycle of about 60 Days

An intensive photometric-observation campaign of the recently discovered SU UMa-type dwarf nova, Var73 Dra was conducted from 2002 August to 2003 February. We caught three superoutbursts in 2002 October, December and 2003 February. The recurrence cycle of the superoutburst (supercycle) is indicated to be $\sim$60 d, the shortest among the values known so far in SU UMa stars and close to those of ER UMa stars. The superhump periods measured during the first two superoutbursts were 0.104885(93) d, and 0.10623(16) d, respectively. A 0.10424(3)-d periodicity was detected in quiescence. The change rate of the superhump period during the second superoutburst was $1.7\times10^{-3}$, which is an order of magnitude larger than the largest value ever known. Outburst activity has changed from a phase of frequent normal outbursts and infrequent superoutbursts in 2001 to a phase of infrequent normal outbursts and frequent superoutbursts in 2002. Our observations are negative to an idea that this star is an related object to ER UMa stars in terms of the duty cycle of the superoutburst and the recurrence cycle of the normal outburst. However, to trace the superhump evolution throughout a superoutburst, and from quiescence more effectively, may give a fruitful result on this matter.

Z_3 symmetry and W_3 algebra in lattice vertex operator algebras

The W_3 algebra of central charge 6/5 is realized as a subalgebra of the vertex operator algebra V_{\sqrt{2}A_2} associated with a lattice of type \sqrt{2}A_2 by using both coset construction and orbifold theory. It is proved that W_3 is rational. Its irreducible modules are classified and constructed explicitly. The characters of those irreducible modules are also computed.

Grazing Eclipsing Dwarf Nova CW Monocerotis: Dwarf Nova-Type Outburst in a Possible Intermediate Polar?

We observed the 2002 October-November outburst of the dwarf nova CW Mon. The outburst showed a clear signature of a premaximum halt, and a more rapid decline after reaching the outburst maximum. On two separate occasions, during the premaximum stage and near the outburst maximum, shallow eclipses were recorded. This finding confirms the previously suggested possibility of the grazing eclipsing nature of this system. The separate occurrence of the eclipses and the premaximum halt can be understood as a result of a combination of two-step ignition of an outburst and the inside-out propagation of the heating wave. We detected a coherent short-period (0.02549 d) signal on two subsequent nights around the optical maximum. This signal was likely present during the maximum phase of the 2000 January outburst. We interpret this signal as a signature of the intermediate polar (IP) type pulses. The rather strange outburst properties, strong and hard X-ray emission, and the low luminosity of the outburst maximum might be understood as consequences of the supposed IP nature. The ratio between the suggested spin period and the orbital period, however, is rather unusual for a system having an orbital period of ~0.176 d.

Unique Spin Dynamics and Unconventional Superconductivity in the Layered Heavy Fermion Compound CeIrIn_5:NQR Evidence

We report measurements of the ^{115}In nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate (1/T_1) between T=0.09 K and 100 K in the new heavy fermion (HF) compound CeIrIn_5. At 0.4 K < T < 100 K, 1/T_1 is strongly T-dependent, which indicates that CeIrIn_5 is much more itinerant than known Ce-based HFs. We find that 1/T_1T, subtracting that for LaIrIn_5, follows a 1/(T+θ)^{3/4} variation with θ=8 K. We argue that this novel feature points to anisotropic, due to a layered crystal structure, spin fluctuations near a magnetic ordering. The bulk superconductivity sets in at 0.40 K below which the coherence peak is absent and 1/T_1 follows a T^3 variation, which suggests unconventional superconductivity with line-node gap.
