Quantum Determinant Estimation

A quantum algorithm for computing the determinant of a unitary matrix $U\in U(N)$ is given. The algorithm requires no preparation of eigenstates of $U$ and estimates the phase of the determinant to $t$ binary digits accuracy with $\mathcal{O}(N\log^2 N+t^2)$ operations and $tN$ controlled applications of $U^{2^m}$ with $m=0,\ldots,t-1$. For an orthogonal matrix $O\in O(N)$ the algorithm can determine with certainty the sign of the determinant using $\mathcal{O}(N\log^2 N)$ operations and $N$ controlled applications of $O$. An extension of the algorithm to contractions is discussed.

Quantum Phase Estimation and the Aharonov-Bohm effect

We consider the time evolution of a particle on a ring with a long solenoid through and show that due to the Aharonov-Bohm effect this system naturally makes up a physical implementation of the quantum phase estimation algorithm for a $U(1)$ unitary operator. The implementation of the full quantum phase estimation algorithm with a $U(N)$ unitary operator is realised through the non-abelian Aharonov-Bohm effect. The implementation allows for a more physically intuitive understanding of the algorithm. As an example we use the path integral formulation of the implemented quantum phase estimation algorithm to analyse the classical limit $\hbar\to0$.

New term in effective field theory at fixed topology

A random matrix model for lattice QCD which takes into account the positive definite nature of the Wilson term is introduced. The corresponding effective theory for fixed index of the Wilson Dirac operator is derived to next to leading order. It reveals a new term proportional to the topological index of the Wilson Dirac operator and the lattice spacing. The new term appears naturally in a fixed index spurion analysis. The spurion approach reveals that the term is the first in a new family of such terms and that equivalent terms are relevant for the effective theory of continuum QCD.

Universal distributions from non-Hermitian Perturbation of Zero-Modes

Hermitian operators with exact zero modes subject to non-Hermitian perturbations are considered. Specific focus is on the average distribution of the initial zero modes of the Hermitian operators. The broadening of these zero modes is found to follow an elliptic Gaussian random matrix ensemble of fixed size, where the symmetry class of the perturbation determines the behaviour of the modes. This distribution follows from a central limit theorem of matrices, and is shown to be robust to deformations of the average.

The $\epsilon$-regime of dilaton chiral perturbation theory

The $\epsilon$-regime of dilaton chiral perturbation theory is introduced. We compute the dilaton mass, the chiral condensate and the topological susceptibility in the $\epsilon$-regime, as a function of the fermion mass. The microscopic spectral density of the Dirac operator is obtained from dilaton chiral perturbation theory. Our main result is that the chiral condensate and the spectral density are related to their counterparts from ordinary chiral perturbation theory via a simple scaling relation. This relation originates from the mass dependence of the dilaton potential, and is valid in both the $\epsilon$-regime and the $p$-regime. In the $\epsilon$-regime, moreover, all results agree with the universal predictions to leading order in $\epsilon$.

Universal Broadening of Zero Modes: A General Framework and Identification

We consider the smallest eigenvalues of perturbed Hermitian operators with zero modes, either topological or system specific. To leading order for small generic perturbation we show that the corresponding eigenvalues broaden to a Gaussian random matrix ensemble of size $\nu\times\nu$, where $\nu$ is the number of zero modes. This observation unifies and extends a number of results within chiral random matrix theory and effective field theory and clarifies under which conditions they apply. The scaling of the former zero modes with the volume differs from the eigenvalues in the bulk, which we propose as an indicator to identify them in experiments. These results hold for all ten symmetric spaces in the Altland-Zirnbauer classification and build on two facts. Firstly, the broadened zero modes decouple from the bulk eigenvalues and secondly, the mixing from eigenstates of the perturbation form a Central Limit Theorem argument for matrices.

Universal Distribution of Would-be Topological Zero Modes in Coupled Chiral Systems

We consider two quenched, chiral ensembles which are coupled in such a way that a combined chiral symmetry is preserved. The coupling also links the topology of the two systems such that the number of exact zero modes in the coupled system equals the sum of the number of zero modes in the two uncoupled systems counted with sign. The canceled modes that turn non-topological due to the coupling become near-zero modes at small coupling. We analyze the distribution of these would-be zero modes using effective field theory. The distribution is universal and, in the limit of small coupling, the would-be zero modes are distributed according to a finite size chiral Gaussian ensemble, where the width of the distribution scales as the inverse square root of the volume.

Bosonic Partition Functions

The behavior of quenched Dirac spectra of two-dimensional lattice QCD is consistent with spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking which is forbidden according to the Coleman-Mermin-Wagner theorem. One possible resolution of this paradox is that, because of the bosonic determinant in the partially quenched partition function, the conditions of this theorem are violated allowing for spontaneous symmetry breaking in two dimensions or less. This goes back to work by Niedermaier and Seiler on nonamenable symmetries of the hyperbolic spin chain and earlier work by two of the auhtors on bosonic partition functions at nonzero chemical potential. In this talk we discuss chiral symmetry breaking for the bosonic partition function of QCD at nonzero isospin chemical potential and a bosonic random matrix theory at imaginary chemical potential and compare the results with the fermionic counterpart. In both cases the chiral symmetry group of the bosonic partition function is noncompact.

The microscopic Twisted Mass Dirac spectrum and the spectral determination of the LECs of Wilson $\chi$-PT

We present the comparison of the analytical microscopic spectral density for lattice QCD with $N_{\rm f}=2$ twisted mass fermions with the one obtained on the lattice utilizing configurations produced by the ETM collaboration. We extract estimates for the chiral condensate as well as the low-energy constant $W_8$ of Wilson $\chi$-PT by employing spectral information of the Wilson Dirac operator with fixed index at finite volume.

Phase Diagram of Dynamical Twisted Mass Wilson Fermions at Finite Isospin Chemical Potential

We consider the phase diagram of twisted mass Wilson fermions of two-flavor QCD in the parameter space of the quark mass, the isospin chemical potential, the twist angle and the lattice spacing. This work extends earlier studies in the continuum and those at zero chemical potential. We evaluate the phase diagram as well as the spectrum of the (pseudo-)Goldstone bosons using the chiral Lagrangian for twisted mass Wilson fermions at non-zero isospin chemical potential. The phases are obtained from a mean field analysis. At zero twist angle we find that already an infinitesimal isospin chemical potential destroys the Aoki phase. The reason is that in this phase we have massless Goldstone bosons with a non-zero isospin charge. At finite twist angle only two different phases are present, one phase which is continuously connected to the Bose condensed phase at non-zero chemical potential and another phase which is continuously connected to the normal phase. For either zero or maximal twist the phase diagram is more complicated as the saddle point equations allow for more solutions.

Full simulation of chiral Random Matrix Theory at non-zero chemical potential by Complex Langevin

It is demonstrated that the complex Langevin method can simulate chiral random matrix theory at non-zero chemical potential. The successful match with the analytic prediction for the chiral condensate is established through a shift of matrix integration variables and choosing a polar representation for the new matrix elements before complexification. Furthermore, we test the proposal to work with a Langevin-time dependent quark mass and find that it allows us to control the fluctuations of the phase of the fermion determinant throughout the Langevin trajectory.

The Dirac spectrum in Complex Langevin Simulations of QCD

We show that the spectrum of the Dirac operator in complex Langevin simulations of QCD at non-zero chemical potential must behave in a way which is radically different from the one in simulations with ordinary non-complexified gauge fields: At low temperatures the small eigenvalues of the Dirac operator must be inside the quark mass for chemical potentials as large as a third of the nucleon mass. In particular, in the chiral limit the Dirac eigenvalues of complex Langevin simulations must accumulate at the origin.

Distribution of Canonical Determinants in QCD

The distribution of canonical determinants in QCD is determined by means of chiral perturbation theory. For a non-zero quark charge the canonical determinants take complex values. In the dilute pion gas approximation, we compute all moments of the magnitude of the canonical determinants, as well as the first nonvanishing moments of the real and imaginary parts. The non-trivial cancellation between the real and the imaginary parts of the canonical determinants is derived and the signal to noise ratio is discussed. The analytical distributions are compared to lattice data. The average density of the magnitude of the canonical determinants is determined as well and is shown to be given by a variant of the log-normal distribution.

Phase Diagram of Wilson and Twisted Mass Fermions at finite isospin chemical potential

Wilson Fermions with untwisted and twisted mass are widely used in lattice simulations. Therefore one important question is whether the twist angle and the lattice spacing affect the phase diagram. We briefly report on the study of the phase diagram of QCD in the parameter space of the degenerate quark masses, isospin chemical potential, lattice spacing, and twist angle by employing chiral perturbation theory. Moreover we calculate the pion masses and their dependence on these four parameters.

The gradient flow of the Dirac spectrum

We construct chiral perturbation theory for the gradient flow of the microscopic Dirac eigenvalues and compute the density of and correlations between the microscopic eigenvalues at zero and non-zero flow time. The results show that the repulsion of the microscopic Dirac eigenvalues from the dynamical quark mass decreases with increasing gradient flow time. Furthermore, the flow of the spectral resolvent is compared to the flow of the chiral condensate obtained from a fermionic gradient flow.

The van der Waals interaction in one, two and three dimensions

The van der Waals interaction between two polarizable atoms is considered. In three dimensions the standard form with an attractive $1/|R|^6$ potential is obtained from second-order quantum perturbation theory. When the electron motion is restricted to lower dimensions (but the $1/|R|$ Coulomb potential is retained), new terms in the expansion appear and alter both the sign and the $|R|$ dependence of the interaction.

Investigating corrections to a Gaussian distribution of the complex phase

It has been suggested that the density of states approach to performing lattice simulations in QCD with nonzero chemical potential can be modified to improve the signal to noise ratio by performing a cumulant expansion of the complex phase of the fermion determinant, and then simplified by truncating the expansion after the first non-zero cumulant. This truncation corresponds to approximating the distribution of the complex phase of the fermion determinant by a Gaussian form. The crucial question is: how large are the other cumulants? We calculate the distribution of the complex phase from the hadron resonance gas model and from a combined lattice strong coupling and hopping expansion. In the case of the hadron resonance gas model the distribution takes a Gaussian form, but from the strong coupling and hopping expansion there are corrections. We discuss the implications to lattice simulations.

Discretization Effects in the $ε$ Domain of QCD

At nonzero lattice spacing the QCD partition function with Wilson quarks undergoes either a second order phase transition to the Aoki phase for decreasing quark mass or shows a first order jump when the quark mass changes sign. We discuss these phase transitions in terms of Wilson Dirac spectra and show that the first order scenario can only occur in the presence of dynamical quarks while in the quenched case we can only have a transition to the Aoki phase. The exact microscopic spectral density of the non-Hermitian Wilson Dirac operator with dynamical quarks is discussed as well. We conclude with some remarks on discretization effects for the overlap Dirac operator.
