Monolithic MHz-frame rate digital SiPM-IC with sub-100 ps precision and 70$~\mu$m pixel pitch

This paper presents the design and characterization of a monolithic integrated circuit (IC) including digital silicon photomultipliers (dSiPMs) arranged in a 32$~\times~$32 pixel matrix at 70$~\mu$m pitch. The IC provides per-quadrant time stamping and hit-map readout, and is fabricated in a standard 150-nm CMOS technology. Each dSiPM pixel consists of four single-photon avalanche diodes (SPADs) sharing a quenching and subsequent processing circuitry and has a fill factor of 30$~\%$. A sub-100$~$ps precision, 12-bit time-to-digital converter (TDC) provides timestamps per quadrant with an acquisition rate of 3$~$MHz. Together with the hit map, the total sustained data throughput of the IC amounts to 4$~$Gbps. Measurements obtained in a dark, temperature-stable environment as well as by using a pulsed laser environment show the full dSiPM-IC functionality. The dark-count rate (DCR) as function of the overvoltage and temperature, the TDC resolution, differential and integral nonlinearity (DNL/INL) as well as the propagation-delay variations across the matrix are presented. With aid of additional peripheral test structures, the main building blocks are characterized and key parameters are presented.

Shape fluctuations and radiation from thermally excited electronic states of boron clusters

The effect of thermal shape fluctuations on the recurrent fluorescence of boron cluster cations, B$_N^+$ ($N=9-14$), has been investigated numerically, with a special emphasis on B$_{13}^+$. For this cluster, the electronic structures of the ground state and the four lowest electronically excited states were calculated using time-dependent density functional theory, and sampled on molecular dynamics trajectories of the cluster calculated at an experimentally relevant excitation energy. The sampled optical transition matrix elements for B$_{13}^+$ allowed to construct its emission spectrum from the thermally populated electronically excited states. The spectrum was found to be broad, reaching down to at least 0.85 eV. This contrasts strongly with the static picture, where the lowest electronic transition happens at 2.3 eV. The low-lying electronic excitations produce a strong increase in the rates of recurrent fluorescence, calculated to peak at $4.6 \times 10^{4}$ s$^{-1}$, with a time-average of $8 \times 10^{3}$ s$^{-1}$. The average value is one order of magnitude higher than the static result, approaching the measured radiation rate. Similar results were found for the other cluster sizes. Furthermore, the radiationless crossing between the ground-state and the first electronic excited state surfaces of B$_{13}^+$ was calculated, found to be very fast compared to experimental time scales, justifying the thermal population assumption.

Spontaneous electron emission from hot silver dimer anions: Breakdown of the Born-Oppenheimer approximation

We report the first experimental evidence of spontaneous electron emission from a homonuclear dimer anion through direct measurements of $\rm{Ag}_2^- \rightarrow \rm{Ag}_2 + \rm{e}^-$ decays on milliseconds and seconds time scales. This observation is very surprising as there is no avoided crossing between adiabatic energy curves to mediate such a process. The process is weak but yet dominates the decay signal after 100 ms when ensembles of internally hot Ag$_2^-$ ions are stored in the cryogenic ion-beam storage ring, DESIREE, for 10 seconds. The electron emission process is associated with an instantaneous, very large, reduction of the vibrational energy of the dimer system. This represents a dramatic deviation from a Born-Oppenheimer description of dimer dynamics.

Near-threshold $\pi^-$ photoproduction on the deuteron

The first experimental investigation of the near-threshold cross section for incoherent $\pi^-$ photoproduction on the deuteron $\gamma$ d -> $\pi^-$ pp is presented. The experimental technique involved detection of the ~131 MeV gamma ray resulting from the radiative capture of photoproduced $\pi^-$ in the target. The total cross section has been measured using an unpolarized tagged-photon beam, a liquid-deuterium target, and three very large NaI(Tl) spectrometers. The data are compared to theoretical models that give insight into the elementary reaction $\gamma$ n -> $\pi^-$ p and pion-nucleon and nucleon-nucleon final-state interactions.

Decays of excited silver cluster anions Ag$_{n}$, $n = 4$ to $7$, in DESIREE

Spontaneous decays of small, hot silver cluster anions Ag$_{n}$, $n=4-7$ have been studied using one of the rings of the Double ElectroStatic Ion Ring ExpEriment (DESIREE). Observation of these decays over very long time scales is possible due to the very low residual gas pressure ($\sim10^{-14}$) and cryogenic (13 K) operation of DESIREE. The yield of neutral particles from stored beams of Ag$_{6}$ and Ag$_{7}$ anions were measured for 100 milliseconds and were found to follow single power law behaviour with millisecond time scale exponential cut-offs. The Ag$_{4}$ and Ag$_{5}$ anions were stored for 60 seconds and the observed decays show two-component power law behaviors. We present calculations of the rate constants for electron detachment from, and fragmentation of Ag$_{4}$ and Ag$_{5}$. In these calculations, we assume that the internal energy distribution of the clusters are flat and with this we reproduce the early steep parts of the experimentally measured decay curves for Ag$_{4}$ and Ag$_{5}$, which extends to tens and hundreds of milliseconds, respectively. The fact that the calculations reproduce the early slopes of Ag$_{4}$ and Ag$_{5}$, which differ for the two cases, suggests that it is the changes in fragmentation rates with internal cluster energies of Ag$_{4}$ and Ag$_{5}$ rather than conditions in the ion source that determines this behavior. Comparisons with the measurements strongly suggest that the neutral particles detected in these time domains originate from Ag$_{4} \rightarrow$ Ag$_{3}+$ Ag and Ag$_{5}\rightarrow$ Ag$_{3}+$ Ag$_{2}$ fragmentation processes.

Spontaneous decay of small copper cluster anions Cu$_n^-$, $n=3-6$ on long time scales

We have measured the spontaneous neutral particle emission from copper cluster anions (Cu$_n^-$, $n=3-6$) stored at cryogenic temperatures in one of the electrostatic ion storage rings of the DESIREE (Double ElectroStatic Ion Ring ExpEriment) facility at Stockholm University. The measured rate of emission from the stored Cu$_3^-$ ions follows a single power law decay for about 1 ms but then decreases much more rapidly with time. The latter behavior may be due to a decrease in the density of available final states in Cu$_3$ as the excitation energies of the decaying ions approach the electron detachment threshold. The emissions from Cu$_4^-$, Cu$_5^-$ and Cu$_6^-$ are well-described by sums of two power laws that are quenched by radiative cooling of the stored ions with characteristic times between a few and hundreds of milliseconds. We relate these two-component behaviors to populations of stored ions with higher and lower angular momenta. In a separate experiment, we studied the laser-induced decay of Cu$_6^-$ ions that were excited by 1.13 eV or 1.45 eV photons after 46 milliseconds of storage.

First storage of ion beams in the Double Electrostatic Ion-Ring Experiment - DESIREE

We report on the first storage of ion beams in the Double ElectroStatic Ion Ring ExpEriment; DESIREE, at Stockholm University. We have produced beams of atomic carbon anions and small carbon anion molecules (C$_n^-$, $n=1,2,3,4$) in a sputter ion source. The ion beams were accelerated to 10 keV kinetic energy and stored in an electrostatic ion storage ring enclosed in a vacuum chamber at 13 K. For 10 keV C$_2^-$ molecular anions we measure the residual-gas limited beam storage lifetime to be 448 s $\pm$ 18 s with two independent detector systems. Using the measured storage lifetimes we estimate that the residual gas pressure is in the 10$^{-14}$ mbar range. When high current ion beams are injected, the number of stored particles does not follow a single exponential decay law as would be expected for stored particles lost solely due to electron detachment in collision with the residual-gas. Instead, we observe a faster initial decay rate, which we ascribe to the effect of the space charge of the ion beam on the storage capacity. %The latter effect becomes insignificant after longer storage times of typically 100-150 seconds and we then observe a constant decay rate due to residual-gas collisions.

Compton Scattering from the Deuteron above Pion-Production Threshold

The electromagnetic polarizabilities of the nucleon are fundamental nucleon-structure observables that characterize its response to external electromagnetic fields. The neutron polarizabilities can be accessed from Compton-scattering data on light nuclear targets. Recent measurements of the differential cross section for Compton scattering on the deuteron below the pion-production threshold have decreased the uncertainties in the neutron polarizabilities, yet the proton polarizabilities remain known substantially more accurately. As the sensitivity of the cross section to the polarizabilities increases with incident photon energy, measurements above the pion threshold may offer a way for an improved determination of the neutron polarizabilities. In this article, the first measurement of the cross section for Compton scattering on the deuteron above the pion-production threshold is presented.

Test Beam Performance Measurements for the Phase I Upgrade of the CMS Pixel Detector

A new pixel detector for the CMS experiment was built in order to cope with the instantaneous luminosities anticipated for the Phase~I Upgrade of the LHC. The new CMS pixel detector provides four-hit tracking with a reduced material budget as well as new cooling and powering schemes. A new front-end readout chip mitigates buffering and bandwidth limitations, and allows operation at low comparator thresholds. In this paper, comprehensive test beam studies are presented, which have been conducted to verify the design and to quantify the performance of the new detector assemblies in terms of tracking efficiency and spatial resolution. Under optimal conditions, the tracking efficiency is $99.95\pm0.05\,\%$, while the intrinsic spatial resolutions are $4.80\pm0.25\,\mu \mathrm{m}$ and $7.99\pm0.21\,\mu \mathrm{m}$ along the $100\,\mu \mathrm{m}$ and $150\,\mu \mathrm{m}$ pixel pitch, respectively. The findings are compared to a detailed Monte Carlo simulation of the pixel detector and good agreement is found.

A Helium Gas-Scintillator Active Target for Photoreaction Measurements

A multi-cell He gas-scintillator active target, designed for the measurement of photoreaction cross sections, is described. The target has four main chambers, giving an overall thickness of 0.103 $\mathrm{g/cm^{2}}$ at an operating pressure of 2 MPa. Scintillations are read out by photomultiplier tubes and the addition of small amounts of $\mathrm{N}_{2}$ to the He, to shift the scintillation emission from UV to visible, is discussed. First results of measurements at the MAX IV Laboratory tagged-photon facility show that the target has good timing resolution and can cope well with a high-flux photon beam. The determination of reaction cross sections from target yields relies on a Monte Carlo simulation, which considers scintillation light transport, photodisintegration processes in $^{4}\mathrm{He}$, background photon interactions in target windows and interactions of the reaction-product particles in the gas and target container. The predictions of this simulation are compared to the measured target response.

New Measurement of Compton Scattering from the Deuteron and an Improved Extraction of the Neutron Electromagnetic Polarizabilities

The electromagnetic polarizabilities of the nucleon are fundamental properties that describe its response to external electric and magnetic fields. They can be extracted from Compton-scattering data --- and have been, with good accuracy, in the case of the proton. In contradistinction, information for the neutron requires the use of Compton scattering from nuclear targets. Here we report a new measurement of elastic photon scattering from deuterium using quasimonoenergetic tagged photons at the MAX IV Laboratory in Lund, Sweden. These first new data in more than a decade effectively double the world dataset. Their energy range overlaps with previous experiments and extends it by 20 MeV to higher energies. An analysis using Chiral Effective Field Theory with dynamical Δ(1232) degrees of freedom shows the data are consistent with and within the world dataset. After demonstrating that the fit is consistent with the Baldin sum rule, extracting values for the isoscalar nucleon polarizabilities and combining them with a recent result for the proton, we obtain the neutron polarizabilities as α_n = [11.55 +/- 1.25(stat) +/- 0.2(BSR) +/- 0.8(th)] X 10^{-4} fm^3 and β_n = [3.65 -/+ 1.25(stat) +/- 0.2(BSR) -/+ 0.8(th)] X 10^{-4} fm3, with χ^2 = 45.2 for 44 degrees of freedom.

Compton scattering from 12C using tagged photons in the energy range 65 - 115 MeV

Elastic scattering of photons from 12C has been investigated using quasi-monoenergetic tagged photons with energies in the range 65 - 115 MeV at laboratory angles of 60 deg, 120 deg, and 150 deg at the Tagged-Photon Facility at the MAX IV Laboratory in Lund, Sweden. A phenomenological model was employed to provide an estimate of the sensitivity of the 12C(g,g)12C cross section to the bound-nucleon polarizabilities.

Tests of the Monte Carlo Simulation of the Photon-Tagger Focal-Plane Electronics at the MAX IV Laboratory

Rate-dependent effects in the electronics used to instrument the tagger focal plane at the MAX IV Laboratory were recently investigated using the novel approach of Monte Carlo simulation to allow for normalization of high-rate experimental data acquired with single-hit time-to-digital converters (TDCs). The instrumentation of the tagger focal plane has now been expanded to include multi-hit TDCs. The agreement between results obtained from data taken using single-hit and multi-hit TDCs demonstrate a thorough understanding of the behavior of the detector system.

A measurement of the differential cross section for the two-body photodisintegration of 3He at theta_LAB = 90deg using tagged photons in the energy range 14 -- 31 MeV

The two-body photodisintegration of 3He has been investigated using tagged photons with energies from 14 -- 31 MeV at MAX-lab in Lund, Sweden. The two-body breakup channel was unambiguously identified by the (nonsimultaneous) detection of both protons and deuterons. This approach was made feasible by the over-determined kinematic situation afforded by the tagged-photon technique. Proton- and deuteron-energy spectra were measured using four silicon surface-barrier detector telescopes located at a laboratory angle of 90deg with respect to the incident photon-beam direction. Average statistical and systematic uncertainties of 5.7% and 6.6% in the differential cross section were obtained for 11 photon-energy bins with an average width of 1.2 MeV. The results are compared to previous experimental data measured at comparable photon energies as well as to the results of two recent Faddeev calculations which employ realistic potential models and take into account three-nucleon forces and final-state interactions. Both the accuracy and precision of the present data are improved over the previous measurements. The data are in good agreement with most of the previous results, and favor the inclusion of three-nucleon forces in the calculations.

Pion emission in 2H, 12C, 27Al, gamma pi+ reactions at threshold

The first data from MAX-lab in Lund, Sweden on pion production in photonuclear reactions at threshold energies, is presented. The decrease of the total yield of pi+ in gamma + 12C, 27Al reactions below 200 MeV as well as differential, dsigma/dOmega, cross sections follow essentially predictions from an intranuclear cascade model with an attractive potential for pion-nucleus interaction in its simplest form. Double differential, d2sigma/dOmegadT, cross sections at 176 MeV show, however, deviations from the model, which call for refinements of nuclear and Coulomb potentials and possibly also for coherent pion production mechanisms.

Conductance of single-atom platinum contacts: Voltage-dependence of the conductance histogram

The conductance of a single-atom contact is sensitive to the coupling of this contact atom to the atoms in the leads. Notably for the transition metals this gives rise to a considerable spread in the observed conductance values. The mean conductance value and spread can be obtained from the first peak in conductance histograms recorded from a large set of contact-breaking cycles. In contrast to the monovalent metals, this mean value for Pt depends strongly on the applied voltage bias and other experimental conditions, ranging from about 1 to 2.5 times 2e^2/h. We propose that the different results in part can be explained by the inclusion of hydrogen in the contacts. The bias dependence of the conductance is on the other hand due to the electron current that destabilizes monatomic Pt chains at high bias.

Compton Scattering from the Deuteron and Extracted Neutron Polarizabilities

Differential cross sections for Compton scattering from the deuteron were measured at MAX-lab for incident photon energies of 55 MeV and 66 MeV at nominal laboratory angles of $45^\circ$, $125^\circ$, and $135^\circ$. Tagged photons were scattered from liquid deuterium and detected in three NaI spectrometers. By comparing the data with theoretical calculations in the framework of a one-boson-exchange potential model, the sum and difference of the isospin-averaged nucleon polarizabilities, $\alpha_N + \beta_N = 17.4 \pm 3.7$ and $\alpha_N - \beta_N = 6.4 \pm 2.4$ (in units of $10^{-4}$ fm$^3$), have been determined. By combining the latter with the global-averaged value for $\alpha_p - \beta_p$ and using the predictions of the Baldin sum rule for the sum of the nucleon polarizabilities, we have obtained values for the neutron electric and magnetic polarizabilities of $\alpha_n= 8.8 \pm 2.4$(total) $\pm 3.0$(model) and $\beta_n = 6.5 \mp 2.4$(total) $\mp 3.0$(model), respectively.
