Kinetic coupling and dark matter on the lattice

We study a $U(1)\otimes U(1)$ system coupled to scalar fields. Initially the model is studied in a novel continuum formulation and study of the appropriate diagonalizations is performed. Three models are examined, in two of which the scalar field couples with both gauge fields while in the third one the scalar field couples only to the dark photon. The model is then treated on a space-time lattice. We determine the phase diagram for various values of the kinetic coupling parameter. Then there follows the determination of masses for the scalar fields and the massive gauge fields, as well as the fine structure constants for the massless gauge fields.

On internal mechanical properties of Electroweak Magnetic Monopoles and their effects on stability

By considering properties of the energy-momentum tensor of the electroweak magnetic monopole and its Born-Infeld extension, we attempt to make comments on the stability of these configurations. Specifically, we perform a study of the behaviour of the so-called internal force and pressure of these extended field-theoretic solitonic objects, which are derived from the energy-momentum tensor. Our method is slightly different from the so-called Laue's criterion for stability of nuclear matter, a local form of which had been proposed and applied in the earlier literature to the `t Hooft-Polyakov (HP) magnetic monopole, and found to be violated.By applying our method first to HP monopole, we also observe that, despite its topological stability, the total (finite) internal force (which has only radial components) is directed inwards, towards the centre of the monopole, which would imply instability. Thus this mechanical criterion for stability is arguably violated in the case of the HP monopole, as is the local version of Laue's criterion. The criterion is satisfied for the short-range part of the energy momentum tensor, in which the long-range part, due to the massless photon of the U(1) subgroup, is subtracted. Par contrast, the total internal force of the Cho-Maison (CM) electroweak monopole has both radial and angular components, which diverge at the origin, leading to rotational instabilities. Finally, by studying finite-energy extensions of the CM, either with non-minimal Higgs couplings with the hypercharge sector or hypercharge Born-Infeld type models, we find that the total force, integrated over space, is finite, but it has also angular components in the Born-Infeld case. The latter feature is interpreted as indicating that the Born-Infeld-CM monopole might be subject to rotations upon the action of perturbations, but it does not necessarily imply instabilities of the configuration.

Effective Abelian Lattice Gauge Field Theories for scalar-matter-monopole interactions

We present a gauge and Lorentz invariant effective field theory model for the interaction of a charged scalar matter field with a magnetic monopole source, described by an external magnetic current. The quantum fluctuations of the monopole field are described effectively by a strongly-coupled ``dual'' $U_{\rm d}(1)$ gauge field, which is independent of the electromagnetic $U_{\rm em}(1)$ gauge field. The effective interactions of the charged matter with the monopole source are described by a gauge invariant mixed Chern-Simons-like (Pontryagin-density) term between the two $U(1)$ gauge fields. The latter interaction coupling is left free, and a Lattice study of the system is performed with the aim of determining the phase structure of this effective theory. Our study shows that, in the spontaneously-broken-symmetry phase, the monopole source triggers, via the mixed Chern-Simons term, which is non-trivial in its presence, the generation of a dynamical singular configuration (magnetic-monopole-like) for the respective gauge fields. The scalar field also behaves in the broken phase in a way similar to that of the scalar sector of the `t Hooft-Polyakov monopole.

Gauge Field Localization in the Linear Dilaton Background

We study dynamical self-localization of gauge theories in higher dimensions. Specifically, we consider a 5D $U(1)$ gauge theory in the linear dilaton (clockwork) background, with anisotropic gauge couplings along the transverse (fifth) direction and the longitudinal (four-dimensional) directions. By using lattice techniques, we calculate the space plaquettes and the helicity moduli and we determine the phase diagram of the model. We find strong evidence that the model exhibits a new phase, a layer phase, where the four-dimensional physics decouples from the five-dimensional dynamics. The layer phase corresponds to a strong force along the fifth direction and a Coulomb phase along the four-dimensional longitudinal directions. This is in accordance with the clockwork mechanism where light particles with exponentially suppressed interactions are generated in theories with no fundamental small parameters.

Effective potential for Lifshitz type z=3 gauge theories

We consider the one-loop effective potential at zero temperature in field theories with anisotropic space-time scaling, with critical exponent $z=3$, including scalar, fermion and gauge fields. The fermion determinant generates a symmetry breaking term at one loop in the effective potential and a local minimum appears, for non zero scalar field, for every value of the Yukawa coupling. Depending on the relative strength of the coupling constants for the scalar and the gauge field, we find a second symmetry breaking local minimum in the effective potential for a bigger value of the scalar field.

Symmetry breaking and restoration for interacting scalar and gauge fields in Lifshitz type theories

We consider the one-loop effective potential at zero and finite temperature in field theories with anisotropic space-time scaling, with critical exponent $z=2$, including both scalar and gauge fields. Depending on the relative strength of the coupling constants for the gauge and scalar interactions, we find that there is a symmetry breaking term induced at one-loop at zero temperature and we find symmetry restoration through a first-order phase transition at high temperature.

Symmetry breaking and restoration in Lifshitz type theories

We consider the one-loop effective potential at zero and finite temperature in scalar field theories with anisotropic space-time scaling. For $z=2$, there is a symmetry breaking term induced at one-loop at zero temperature and we find symmetry restoration through a first-order phase transition at high temperature. For $z=3$, we considered at first the case with a positive mass term at tree level and found no symmetry breaking effects induced at one-loop, and then we study the case with a negative mass term at tree level where we cannot conclude about symmetry restoration effects at high temperature because of the imaginary parts that appear in the effective potential for small values of the scalar field.

Exploration of the phase diagram of 5D anisotropic SU(2) gauge theory

In this paper we attempt a non-perturbative study of the five dimensional, anisotropic SU(2) gauge theory on the lattice using Monte-Carlo techniques. Our goal is the exploration of the phase diagram, define the various phases and the critical boundary lines. Three phases appear, two of them are continuations of the Strong and the Weak coupling phases of pure 4d SU(2) to non-zero coupling $\beta^{'}$ in the fifth transverse direction and they are separated by a crossover transition, while the third phase is a 5D Coulombic phase. We provide evidence that the phase transition between the 5D Coulomb phase and the Weak coupling phase is a second order phase transition. Assuming that this result is not altered when increasing the lattice volume we give a first estimate of the associated critical exponents. This opens the possibility for a continuum effective five dimensional field theory.

Non-Linear Sigma Model and asymptotic freedom at the Lifshitz point

We construct the general O(N)-symmetric non-linear sigma model in 2+1 spacetime dimensions at the Lifshitz point with dynamical critical exponent z=2. For a particular choice of the free parameters, the model is asymptotically free with the beta function coinciding to the one for the conventional sigma model in 1+1 dimensions. In this case, the model admits also a simple description in terms of adjoint currents.

Liouville-Lifshitz theory in 3+1 dimensions

We consider a four-dimensional theory in the z=3 Lifshitz context, with an exponential (Liouville) potential. We determine the exact renormalized potential of the theory and derive the non-perturbative relation between the renormalized and bare couplings. In addition, we show that Lorentz symmetry is naturally generated by quantum fluctuations in the infrared regime, and conclude that the model can be relevant to High Energy Physics.

Schwinger-Dyson approach for a Lifshitz-type Yukawa model

We consider a 3+1 dimensional field theory at a Lifshitz point for a dynamical critical exponent z=3, with a scalar and a fermion field coupled via a Yukawa interaction. Using the non-perturbative Schwinger-Dyson approach we calculate quantum corrections to the effective action. We demonstrate that a first order derivative kinetic term as well as a mass term for the fermion arise dynamically. This signals the restoration of Lorentz symmetry in the IR regime of the single fermion model, although for theories with more than one fermionic species such a conclusion will require fine-tuning of couplings. The limitations of the model and our approach are discussed.

Anti de Sitter 5D black hole solutions with a self-interacting bulk scalar field: a potential reconstruction approach

We construct asymptotically AdS black hole solutions, with a self-interacting bulk scalar field, in the context of 5D general relativity. As the observable universe is characterized by spatial flatness, we focus to solutions where the horizon of the black hole, and subsequently all 3D hypersurfaces for fixed radial coordinate, have zero spatial curvature. We examine two cases for the black hole scalar hair: a) an exponential decaying scalar field profile and b) an inverse power scalar field profile. The scalar black hole solutions we present in this paper, are characterized by four functions f(r), a(r), phi(r) and V(phi(r)). Only the functions phi(r) and a(r) are determined analytically, while the functions f(r) and V(phi(r)) are expressed semi-analytically, by integral formulas in terms of a(r). We present our numerical results in figures and we study in detail the characteristic properties of our solutions. We also note that the potential we obtain has a non-convex form in agreement with the corresponding "no hair theorem" for AdS space-times.

Lorentz violation effects in asymmetric two brane models: a nonperturbative analysis

We consider the case of bulk photons in a Lorentz violating brane background, with an asymmetric warping between space and time warp factors. A perturbative analysis, in a previous work, gave an energy dependent phase (or group) velocity of light: $V_{ph}(ω)=V_{ph}(0)-C_G \:ω^2 \quad (C_G>0)$, which was derived up to second order of time independent perturbation theory. In this paper, we go beyond the perturbative result and we study the nonperturbative behavior of the phase velocity for larger energies, by solving numerically an eigenvalue problem for the wave function of the zero mode (4D photon). In particular we see that $V_{ph}(ω)$ is in general a monotonically decreasing function which tends asymptotically to a final value $V_{ph}(\infty)$. We compare with the results of perturbation theory and we obtain a very good agreement in the range of small energies. We also present a wave function analysis and we see that in the nonperturbative sector of the theory (very high energies), the zero mode and the massive KK modes tend to decouple from matter localized on the TeV brane.

Neutrino oscillations in a Robertson-Walker Universe with space time foam

In Phys. Rev. D77 (2008) 105001, we have studied decoherence models for flavour oscillations in four-dimensional stochastically fluctuating space times and discussed briefly the sensitivity of current terrestrial and astrophysical neutrino experiments to such models. In this addendum we extend these results to incorporate the effects due to the expansion of the Universe, so that our analysis can be useful in studies of extragalactic high-energy neutrinos, such as those coming from Gamma Ray Bursts at cosmological distances. Unfortunately for some microscopic models of foam, constructed in the string theory framework, we arrive at pessimistic conclusions about the detectability of the decoherence effects via flavour oscillation meaurements.

Asymmetrically Warped Brane Models, Bulk Photons and Lorentz Invariance

We present a brief review of our recent work [1] on asymmetrically warped brane models, where the background metric is characterized by different time and space warp factors. In particular we examine the case of bulk photons and we show that the standard Lorentz invariant dispersion relation is corrected by nonlinear terms which lead to an Energy-dependent speed of light. Stringent constraints on the parameters of our models can be set by comparing the results with recent data from high-energy Gamma-Ray Astrophysics, for instance the MAGIC Telescope.

Bulk photons in Asymmetrically Warped Space-times and Non-trivial Vacuum Refractive Index

We consider asymmetrically warped brane models, or equivalently brane models where the background metric is characterized by different time and space warp factors. The main feature of these models is that 4D Lorentz symmetry is violated for fields which propagate in the bulk, such as gravitons. In this paper we examine the case of bulk photons in asymmetrically warped brane models. Although our results are general, we examine here two specific but characteristic solutions: 1) AdS-Schwarzschild 5D Black Hole solution and 2) AdS-Reissner Nordstrom 5D Black Hole solution. We show that the standard Lorentz invariant dispersion relation for 4D photons is corrected by nonlinear terms which lead to an Energy-dependent speed of light. Specifically, we obtain a sub-luminous Energy-dependent refractive index of the form n_{eff}(ω)=1+c_{G} ω^2, where ωis the energy of the photon, and the factor c_G is always positive and depends on the free parameters of the model. Finally, comparing the results with recent data from the MAGIC Telescope, claiming a delayed arrival of photons from the Active Galactic Nucleus of Mk501, we impose concrete restrictions to the two sets of models examined in this work. We shall also discuss briefly other possible astrophysical constraints on our models.

Finite temperature and confinement along the extra dimensions studied on a five-dimensional U(1) lattice gauge model

In this paper we study the properties of the phase diagram of a simple extra dimensional model on the lattice at finite temperature. We consider the five-dimensional pure gauge abelian model with anisotropic couplings which at zero temperature exhibits a new interesting phase, the layer phase. This phase is characterized by a massless photon living on the four dimensional subspace and confinement along the extra dimension. We show that, as long as the temperature takes a non zero value the aforementioned layer phase disappears. It would be equivalent to assume that at finite temperature the higher-dimensional lattice model loses any feature of the layered structure due to the deconfinement which opens up the interactions between the three-dimensional subspaces at finite temperature.

Establishment of the Coulomb law in the layer phase of a pure U(1) lattice gauge theory

In this article we examine the Layer phase of the five dimensional, anisotropic, Abelian gauge model. Our results are to be compared with the ones of the 4D U(1) gauge model in an attempt to verify that four dimensional physics governs the four dimensional layers. The main results are: i) From the analysis of Wilson loops we verified the $\frac{1}{R}$ behavior, in the layered phase, for the potential between heavy charges. The renormalized fine structure constant in the layer phase is found to be equal to that of 4D Coulomb phase,$α_{layer}$=$α_{4D}$. ii) Based on the helicity modulus analysis we show that the layers are in the Coulomb phase while the transverse bulk space is in the confining phase. We also calculated the renormalized coupling $β_{R}$ and found results compatible with those obtained from the Coulomb potential. Finally we calculated the potential in the 5D Coulomb phase and found $\frac{1}{R^{2}}$ behavior for the static $q \bar{q}$ potential. From the study of the helicity modulus we have a possible estimate for the five dimensional renormalized fine structure constant in the region of the critical value of the bare gauge coupling.
