Curvaton reheating allows TeV Hubble scale in NO inflation

Curvaton reheating is studied in non-oscillatory (NO) models of inflation, with the aim to obtain bounds on the parameters of curvaton models and find out whether low scale inflation can be attained. Using a minimal curvaton model, it is found that the allowed parameter space is considerably larger than in the case of the usual oscillatory inflation models. In particular, inflation with Hubble scale as low as 1 TeV is comfortably allowed.

Trapped Quintessential Inflation in the context of Flux Compactifications

We present a model for quintessential inflation using a string modulus for the inflaton - quintessence field. The scalar potential of our model is based on generic non-perturbative potentials arising in flux compactifications. We assume an enhanced symmetry point (ESP), which fixes the initial conditions for slow-roll inflation. When crossing the ESP the modulus becomes temporarily trapped, which leads to a brief stage of trapped inflation. This is followed by enough slow roll inflation to solve the flatness and horizon problems. After inflation, the field rolls down the potential and eventually freezes to a certain value because of cosmological friction. The latter is due to the thermal bath of the hot big bang, which is produced by the decay of a curvaton field. The modulus remains frozen until the present, when it becomes quintessence.

A-term inflation and the MSSM

The parameter space for A-term inflation is explored with $W=λ_p ϕ^p/(p M_P^{p-3})$. With p=6 and λ_p~1, the observed spectrum and spectral tilt can be obtained with soft mass of order 10^2 GeV but not with a much higher mass. The case p=3 requires λ_p~10^{-9} to 10^{-12}. The ratio m/A requires fine-tuning, which may be justified on environmental grounds. An extension of the MSSM to include non-renormalizable terms and/or Dirac neutrino masses might support either A-term inflation or modular inflation.

Trapped Quintessential Inflation

Quintessential inflation is studied using a string modulus as the inflaton - quintessence field. The modulus begins its evolution at the steep part of its scalar potential, which is due to non-perturbative effects (e.g. gaugino condensation). It is assumed that the modulus crosses an enhanced symmetry point (ESP) in field space. Particle production at the ESP temporarily traps the modulus resulting in a brief period of inflation. More inflation follows, due to the flatness of the potential, since the ESP generates either an extremum (maximum or minimum) or a flat inflection point in the scalar potential. Eventually, the potential becomes steep again and inflation is terminated. After reheating the modulus freezes due to cosmological friction at a large value, such that its scalar potential is dominated by contributions due to fluxes in the extra dimensions or other effects. The modulus remains frozen until the present, when it can become quintessence and account for the dark energy necessary to explain the observed accelerated expansion.

Modular inflation and the orthogonal axion as curvaton

We study a particular supersymmetric realization of the Peccei-Quinn symmetry which provides a suitable candidate for the curvaton field. The class of models considered also solves the mu problem, while generating the Peccei-Quinn scale dynamically. The curvaton candidate is a pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson corresponding to an angular degree of freedom orthogonal to the axion field. Its order parameter increases substantially following a phase transition during inflation. This results in a drastic amplification of the curvaton perturbations. Consequently, the mechanism is able to accommodate low-scale inflation with Hubble parameter at the TeV scale. Hence, we investigate modular inflation using a string axion field as the inflaton with inflation scale determined by gravity mediated soft supersymmetry breaking. We find that modular inflation with the orthogonal axion as curvaton can indeed account for the observations for natural values of the parameters.

Hybrid Inflation without Flat Directions and without Primordial Black Holes

We investigate the possibility that the Universe may inflate due to moduli fields, corresponding to flat directions of supersymmetry, lifted by supergravity corrections. Using a hybrid-type potential we obtain a two-stage inflationary model. Depending on the curvature of the potential the first stage corresponds to a period of fast-roll inflation or a period of `locked' inflation, induced by an oscillating inflaton. This is followed by a second stage of fast-roll inflation. We demonstrate that these two consecutive inflationary phases result in enough total e-foldings to encompass the cosmological scales. Using natural values for the parameters (masses of order TeV and vacuum energy of the intermediate scale corresponding to gravity mediated supersymmetry breaking) we conclude that the $η$-problem of inflation is easily overcome. The greatest obstacle to our scenario is the possibility of copious production of cosmologically disastrous primordial black holes due to the phase transition switching from the first into the second stage of inflation. We study this problem in detail and show analytically that there is ample parameter space where these black holes do not form at all. To generate structure in the Universe we assume the presence of a curvaton field. Finally we also discuss the moduli problem and how it affects our considerations.

The Curvaton as a Pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone Boson

The field responsible for the cosmological curvature perturbations generated during a stage of primordial inflation might be the ``curvaton'', a field different from the inflaton field. To keep the effective mass of the curvaton small enough compared to the Hubble rate during inflation one may not invoke supersymmetry since the latter is broken by the vacuum energy density. In this paper we propose the idea that the curvaton is a pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson (PNGB) so that its potential and mass vanish in the limit of unbroken symmetry. We give a general framework within which PNGB curvaton candidates should be explored. Then we explore various possibilities, including the case where the curvaton can be identified with the extra-component of a gauge field in a compactified five-dimensional theory (a Wilson line), where it comes from a Little-Higgs mechanism, and where it is a string axion so that supersymmetry is essential.

Modeling Quintessential Inflation

We develop general criteria to construct unified frameworks for inflation and quintessence which employ a unique scalar field to drive both. By using such a minimal theoretical framework we avoid having to fine-tune couplings and mass-scales. In particular the initial conditions for quintessence are already fixed at the end of the inflationary epoch. We provide concrete realizations of the method which meet all inflationary and quintessence requirements, such as the COBE normalization and the resulting spectral index n = 0.97, which is in excellent agreement with the latest CMB data.

Natural Magnetogenesis from Inflation

We consider the gravitational generation of the massive Z-boson field of the standard model, due to the natural breaking of its conformal invariance during inflation. The electroweak symmetry restoration at the end of inflation turns the almost scale-invariant superhorizon Z-spectrum into a hypermagnetic field, which transforms into a regular magnetic field at the electroweak phase transition. The mechanism is generic and is shown to generate a superhorizon spectrum of the form B~1/L on a length-scale L regardless of the choice of inflationary model. Scaled to the epoch of galaxy formation such a field suffices to trigger the galactic dynamo and explain the observed galactic magnetic fields in the case of a spatially flat, dark energy dominated Universe with GUT-scale inflation. The possibility of further amplification of the generated field by preheating is also investigated. To this end we study a model of Supersymmetric Hybrid Inflation with a Flipped SU(5) grand unified symmetry group.

Towards a model of Quintessential Inflation

A model of quintessential inflation is presented, which manages to achieve the requirements of both inflation and quintessence with natural values of the mass-scales and parameters.

Cosmological Consequences of Superconducting String Networks

We consider the cosmological consequences of a network of superconducting cosmic strings. For strong enough current the period of friction domination never ends. Instead a plasma scaling solution is reached. We demonstrate that this gives rise to a very different cosmology than the usual horizon scaling solution. In particular the string network gives rise to adistinct imprint on the microwave sky, giving non-Gaussian features on much smaller angular scales. It also gives rise to a filament structure in string wakes. Because of the presence of the string magnetocylinder, the string magnetic field cannot create a primordial magnetic field. Similarly, it evades nucleosynthesis constraints. We also show that strings formed at the supersymmetry breaking scale can create the required baryon asymmetry of the universe.

Primordial Magnetic Fields in False Vacuum Inflation

We show that, during false vacuum inflation, a primordial magnetic field can be created, sufficiently strong to seed the galactic dynamo and generate the observed galactic magnetic fields. Considering the inflaton dominated regime, our field is produced by the Higgs-field gradients, resulting from a grand unified phase transition. The evolution of the field is followed from its creation through to the epoch of structure formation, subject to the relevant constraints. We find that it is possible to create a magnetic field of sufficient magnitude, provided the phase transition occurs during the final 5 e-foldings of the inflationary period.

On the Evolution of Primordial Magnetic Fields

A new mechanism for the evolution of primordial magnetic fields is described and analysed. The field evolution is followed from the time of its creation until the epoch of structure and galaxy formation. The mechanism takes into account the turbulent behaviour of the early universe plasma, whose properties determine strongly the evolution of the field configuration. A number of other related issues such as the case of an electroweak plasma are also considered. Finally, as an example, the mechanism is applied to specific models.
