First-principles prediction of chiral-phonon-induced orbital accumulation

Chiral phonons offer a route to transfer angular momentum without relying on magnetic order, but their electronic response in metals remains poorly understood from perspectives beyond spin-based scenarios. Using first-principles calculations, we show that coherent chiral lattice motion generates orbital accumulation and, through spin-orbit coupling, a smaller accompanying spin accumulation. Our approach evaluates orbital and spin expectation values directly from strain perturbed ab initio Hamiltonians in the long-wavelength limit, where the phonon perturbation is represented by symmetry adapted circular lattice distortions. We show that the response is controlled mainly by orbital character, near-degeneracies, and electron-phonon coupling, rather than by spin-orbit coupling alone. These results identify light transition metals as promising platforms for chiral-phonon-driven orbitronics.

A method for reduction of propagation loss of surface plasmons. Experimental demonstration of the loss reduction for Fe/MgO/AlGaAs plasmonic structure integrated with AlGaAs/GaAs optical waveguide

A method for the substantial reduction of propagation loss of surface plasmons was proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The method is based on the fact that the propagation loss of the surface plasmons depends significantly on the optical confinement of the plasmon. A plasmonic structure, which contains a metal and two dielectric layers of different refractive indexes, is proposed in order to optimize optical confinement and to reduce propagation loss of the surface plasmons. A low propagation loss of 0.17 dB/um for a surface plasmon in a Fe/MgO/AlGaAs plasmonic structure was achieved. A good coupling efficiency of 2.2 dB/facet between a surface plasmon in Fe/MgO/AlGaAs and a waveguide mode in AlGaAs/GaAs optical waveguide was demonstrated.

Large spin accumulation voltages in epitaxial Mn5Ge3 contacts on Ge without oxide tunnel barrier

Spin injection in high-quality epitaxial Mn5Ge3 Schottky contacts on n-type Ge has been investigated using a three-terminal Hanle effect measurement. Clear Hanle and inverted Hanle signals with features characteristic of spin accumulation and spin precession are observed up to 200 K. Strikingly, the observed spin voltage is several orders of magnitude larger than predicted by the theory of spin injection and diffusive spin transport. Since the devices have no oxide tunnel barrier, the discrepancy between theory and experiments cannot be explained by the often-invoked spin accumulation in localized states associated with the oxide or oxide/semiconductor interface. The observed spin voltages therefore must originate from the Ge itself, either from spins in the Ge bulk bands or its depletion region.

Spin mixing conductance at a well-controlled platinum/yttrium iron garnet interface

A platinum (Pt)/yttrium iron garnet (YIG) bilayer system with a well-controlled interface has been developed; spin mixing conductance at the Pt/YIG interface has been studied. Crystal perfection at the interface is experimentally demonstrated to contribute to large spin mixing conductance. The spin mixing conductance is obtained to be $1.3\times10^{18} \rm{m^{-2}}$ at the well-controlled Pt/YIG interface, which is close to a theoretical prediction.

Heat-induced damping modification in YIG/Pt hetero-structures

We experimentally demonstrate the manipulation of magnetization relaxation utilizing a temperature difference across the thickness of an yttrium iron garnet/platinum (YIG/Pt) hetero-structure: the damping is either increased or decreased depending on the sign of the temperature gradient. This effect might be explained by a thermally-induced spin torque on the magnetization precession. The heat-induced variation of the damping is detected by microwave techniques as well as by a DC voltage caused by spin pumping into the adjacent Pt layer and the subsequent conversion into a charge current by the inverse spin Hall effect.

Spin Pumping Driven by Bistable Exchange Spin Waves

Spin pumping driven by bistable exchange spin waves is demonstrated in a Pt/Y$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$ film under parametric excitation. In the Pt/Y$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$ film, the spin pumping driven by parametric excitation selectively enhances the relaxation of short-wavelength exchange spin waves, indicating strong coupling between the exchange spin waves and spin currents at the interface through efficient spin transfer. The parametric spin pumping, furthermore, allows direct access to nonlinear spin wave dynamics in combination with the inverse spin Hall effect, revealing unconventional bistability of the exchange spin waves.

Spin Accumulation in Nondegenerate and Heavily Doped p-Type Germanium

Spin accumulation induced in p-type germanium from Fe/MgO tunnel contacts is studied as a function of hole concentration p (10^16 - 10^19 cm-3). For all p, the contacts are free of rectification and Schottky barrier, guaranteeing spin injection into the Ge and preventing spin accumulation enhancement by two-step tunneling via interface states. The observed spin accumulation is smallest for nondegenerate doping (p ~ 10^16 cm-3) and increases for heavily doped Ge. This trend is opposite to what is expected from spin injection and diffusion theory. For heavily doped Ge, the observed spin accumulation is orders of magnitude larger than predicted.

Temperature dependence of microwave voltage emission associated to spin-transfer induced vortex oscillation in magnetic tunnel junction

The temperature dependence of a vortex-based nano-oscillator induced by spin transfer torque (STVO) in magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJ) is considered. We obtain emitted signals with large output power and good signal coherence. Due to the reduced non-linearities compared to the uniform magnetization case, we first observe a linear decrease of linewidth with decreasing temperature. However, this expected behavior no longer applies at lower temperature and a bottom limit of the linewidth is measured.

Enhancement of the transverse non-reciprocal magneto-optical effect

The origin and properties of the transverse non-reciprocal magneto-optical (nMO) effect were studied. The transverse nMO effect occurs in the case when light propagates perpendicularly to the magnetic field. It was demonstrated that light can experience the transverse nMO effect only when it propagates in the vicinity of a boundary between two materials and the optical field at least in one material is evanescent. The transverse nMO effect is pronounced in the cases of surface plasmons and waveguiding modes. The magnitude of the transverse nMO effect is comparable to or greater than the magnitude of the longitudinal nMO effect. In the case of surface plasmons propagating at a boundary between the transition metal and the dielectric it is possible to magnify the transverse nMO effect and the magneto-optical figure-of-merit may increase from a few percents to above 100%. The scalar dispersion relation, which describes the transverse MO effect in cases of waveguide modes and surface plasmons propagating in a multilayer MO slab, was derived.

Phase locking of vortex based spin transfer oscillators to a microwave current

Phase locking experiments on vortex based spin transfer oscillators with an external microwave current are performed. We present clear evidence of phase locking, frequency pulling, as well as fractional synchronization in this system, with a minimum peak linewidth of only 3 kHz in the locked state. We find that locking ranges of the order of 1/3 of the oscillator frequency are easily achievable because of the large tunability $\partial f/\partial I_{dc}$ observed in our vortex based systems. Such large locking ranges allow us to demonstrate the simultaneous phase locking of two independent oscillators connected in series with the external source.

Enhancement of the spin pumping efficiency by spin-wave mode selection

The spin pumping efficiency of lateral standing spin wave modes in a rectangular YIG/Pt sample has been investigated by means of the inverse spin-Hall effect (ISHE). The standing spin waves drive spin pumping, the generation of spin currents from magnetization precession, into the Pt layer which is converted into a detectable voltage due to the ISHE. We discovered that the spin pumping efficiency is significantly higher for lateral standing surface spin waves rather than for volume spin wave modes. The results suggest that the use of higher-mode surface spin waves allows for the fabrication of an efficient spin-current injector.

Large microwave generation from d.c. driven magnetic vortex oscillators in magnetic tunnel junctions

Spin polarized current can excite the magnetization of a ferromagnet through the transfer of spin angular momentum to the local spin system. This pure spin-related transport phenomena leads to alluring possibilities for the achievement of a nanometer scale, CMOS compatible and tunable microwave generator operating at low bias for future wireless communications. Microwave emission generated by the persitent motion of magnetic vortices induced by spin transfer effect seems to be a unique manner to reach appropriate spectral linewidth. However, in metallic systems, where such vortex oscillations have been observed, the resulting microwave power is much too small. Here we present experimental evidences of spin-transfer induced core vortex precessions in MgO-based magnetic tunnel junctions with similar good spectral quality but an emitted power at least one order of magnitude stronger. More importantly, unlike to others spin transfer excitations, the thorough comparison between experimental results and models provide a clear textbook illustration of the mechanisms of vortex precessions induced by spin transfer.

Origin of the spectral linewidth in non linear oscillators based on MgO tunnel junctions

We demonstrate the strong impact of the oscillator agility on the line broadening by studying spin transfer induced microwave emission in MgO-based tunnel junctions with current. The linewidth is almost not affected by decreasing the temperature. At very low currents, a strong enhancement of the linewidth at low temperature is attributed to an increase of the non linearity, probably due to the field-like torque. Finally we evidence that the noise is not dominated by thermal fluctuations but rather by the chaotization of the magnetization system induced by the spin transfer torque.

Frequency converter based on nanoscale MgO magnetic tunnel junctions

We observe both dc voltage rectification and frequency conversion that occur when a reference microwave current is injected to a MgO based magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ). The rectification that is spin-transfer torque dependent is observed when the frequency of the input microwave current coincides with the resonance frequency of the magnetization of the active layer. In addition, we demonstrate that frequency conversion is the result of amplitude modulation between the reference signal and the resistance of the MTJ that is fluctuating at the resonance frequency of the magnetization of the active layer.

Local electronic structure of Cr in the II-VI diluted ferromagnetic semiconductor Zn$_{1-x}$Cr$_x$Te

The electronic structure of the Cr ions in the diluted ferromagnetic semiconductor Zn$_{1-x}$Cr$_x$Te ($x=0.03$ and 0.15) thin films has been investigated using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) and photoemission spectroscopy (PES). Magnetic-field ($H$) and temperature ($T$) dependences of the Cr $2p$ XMCD spectra well correspond to the magnetization measured by a SQUID magnetometer. The line shape of the Cr $2p$ XMCD spectra is independent of $H$, $T$, and $x$, indicating that the ferromagnetism is originated from the same electronic states of the Cr ion. Cluster-model analysis indicates that although there are two or more kinds of Cr ions in the Zn$_{1-x}$Cr$_x$Te samples, the ferromagnetic XMCD signal is originated from Cr ions substituted for the Zn site. The Cr 3d partial density of states extracted using Cr $2p \to 3d$ resonant PES shows a broad feature near the top of the valence band, suggesting strong $s$,$p$-$d$ hybridization. No density of states is detected at the Fermi level, consistent with their insulating behavior. Based on these findings, we conclude that double exchange mechanism cannot explain the ferromagnetism in Zn$_{1-x}$Cr$_{x}$Te.

Origin of the anomalous magnetic circular dichroism spectral shape in ferromagnetic (Ga,Mn)As: Impurity bands inside the band gap

The electronic structure of a prototype dilute magnetic semiconductor (DMS), Ga1-xMnxAs, is studied by magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectroscopy. We prove that the optical transitions originated from impurity bands cause the strong positive MCD background. The MCD signal due to the E0 transition from the valence band to the conduction band is negative indicating that the p-d exchange interactions between the p-carriers and d-spin is antiferromagnetic. The negative E0 MCD signal also indicates that the hole-doping of the valence band is not so large as previously assumed. The impurity bands seem to play important roles for the ferromagnetism of Ga1-xMnxAs.

X-ray magnetic circular dichroism and photoemission study of the diluted ferromagnetic semiconductor Zn$_{1-x}$Cr$_x$Te

We have performed x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) and valence-band photoemission studies of the diluted ferromagnetic semiconductor Zn$_{1-x}$Cr$_x$Te. XMCD signals due to ferromagnetism were observed at the Cr 2p absorption edge. Comparison with atomic multiplet calculations suggests that the magnetically active component of the Cr ion was divalent under the tetrahedral crystal field with tetragonal distortion along the crystalline a-, b-, and c-axes. In the valence-band spectra, spectral weight near the Fermi level was strongly suppressed, suggesting the importance of Jahn-Teller effect and the strong Coulomb interaction between the Cr 3d electrons.
