Optimizing the magnon-phonon cooperativity in planar geometries

Optimizing the cooperativity between two distinct particles is an important feature of quantum information processing. Of particular interest is the coupling between spin and phonon, which allows for integrated long range communication between gates operating at GHz frequency. Using local light scattering, we show that, in magnetic planar geometries, this attribute can be tuned by adjusting the orientation and strength of an external magnetic field. The coupling strength is enhanced by about a factor of 2 for the out-of-plane magnetized geometry where the Kittel mode is coupled to circularly polarized phonons, compared to the in-plane one where it couples to linearly polarized phonons. We also show that the overlap between magnon and phonon is maximized by matching the Kittel frequency with an acoustic resonance that satisfies the half-wave plate condition across the magnetic film thickness. Taking the frequency dependence of the damping into account, a maximum cooperativity of about 6 is reached in garnets for the normal configuration near 5.5 GHz.

Chemical Short-Range Ordering in a CrCoNi Medium-Entropy Alloy

The exceptional mechanical strengths of medium and high-entropy alloys have been attributed to hardening in random solid solutions. Here, we evidence non-random chemical mixings in CrCoNi alloys, resulting from short range ordering. A novel data-mining approach of electron nanodiffraction patterns enabled the study, which is assisted by neutron scattering, atom probe tomography, and diffraction simulation using first principles theory models. Results reveal two critical types of short range orders in nanoclusters that minimize the Cr and Cr nearest neighbors (L11) or segregate Cr on alternating close-packed planes (L12). The makeup of ordering-strengthened nanoclusters can be tuned by heat treatments to affect deformation mechanisms. These findings uncover a mixture of bonding preferences and their control at the nanoscopic scale in CrCoNi and provide general opportunities for an atomistic-structure study in concentrated alloys for the design of strong and ductile materials.

Sign reversal of field-angle resolved heat capacity oscillations in a heavy fermion superconductor CeCoIn$_5$ and $d_{x^2-y^2}$ pairing symmetry

To identify the superconducting gap symmetry in CeCoIn5 (Tc=2.3 K), we performed angle-resolved specific heat (C_\phi) measurements in a field rotated around the c-axis down to very low temperatures 0.05Tc and detailed theoretical calculations. In a field of 1 T, a sign reversal of the fourfold angular oscillation in C_\phi has been observed at T ~ 0.1Tc on entering a quasiclassical regime where the maximum of C_\phi corresponds to the antinodal direction, coinciding with the angle-resolved density of states (ADOS) calculation. The C_\phi behavior, which exhibits minima along [110] directions, unambiguously allows us to conclude d_{x^2-y^2} symmetry of this system. The ADOS-quasiclassical region is confined to a narrow T and H domain within T/Tc ~ 0.1 and 1.5 T (0.13Hc2).

Observation of Multiple Thresholds in the Many-Atom Cavity QED Microlaser

We report the observation of multiple laser thresholds in the many-atom cavity QED microlaser. Traveling-wave coupling and a supersonic atom beam are used to create a well-defined atom-cavity interaction. Multiple thresholds are observed as jumps in photon number due to oscillatory gain. Although the number of intra-cavity atoms is large, up to N~1000, the dynamics of the microlaser agree with a single atom theory. This agreement is supported by quantum trajectory simulations of a many-atom microlaser and a semiclassical microlaser theory. We discuss the relation of the microlaser with the micromaser and conventional lasers.
